Determining the levels of heavy metals in honey is a measure to control its quality. The objective of this study was to determine the contents of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in honey of stingless bee. The differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) was used to determine the trace elements in honey samples. Pb was detected in 100% of the samples, Cu and Zn in 98.15%, and Cd only in 33.33%. The trace elements analyzed detected in the samples remained within tolerable levels in foods for human consumption.

Context: Bronchial fibroepithelial polyp is a very rare benign endobronchial tumor. Typically, it is a slow growing lesion, and the differential diagnosis includes other benign and malignant endobronchial tumors. Case Report: We report a case of a 75-year-old female who complained of intermittent productive cough. Computed tomography of the thorax showed a solid nodule with lobulated contours in the right main bronchus and subtotal atelectasis of the right lower lobe. Bronchoscopy with biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of a bronchial fibroepithelial polyp. Conclusion: This case is illustrative and demonstrates the importance of imaging methods and of histopathological correlation for the accurate diagnosis of this benign treatable lesion.

The paricá [Schizolobium amazonicum Huber ex Ducke] is a native species of the Amazon region, belonging to the Fabaceae family and is a legume that has great social and economic importance, raw material for the manufacture of wood panels. Heliophilous, with wood of light density and good workability. Amazonian soils are highly weathered and characterized by high acidity, so Al harms the growth and development of sensitive plants, as well as the presence of resistant and/or tolerant plants. Thus, in this work, we sought to study the biochemical metabolism alterations generated in young plants of Schizolobium amazonicum Huber ex Ducke affected at different dosages of AlCl3. The research was conducted in a greenhouse of the Federal Rural University of Amazonia, using pre-scarified paricá seeds, which were seeded in plastic containers of 3.5 L capacity, with black soil fertilized with NPK 15-15-20. On the 8th day after sowing (DAS), thinning of 5 seedlings was performed for 2, and on day 12 of 2 for 1 seedling. The treatments started after 1 month and 22 days of sowing and the plants were collected 24 days later. A completely randomized experimental design (RED) was used, with 6 treatments (Control, Al 15 mg/L-1, Al 30 mg/L-1, Al 45 mg/L-1, Al 60 mg/L-1 and Al 75 mg/L-1) with 5 replicates each (one plant/pot) totaling 30 experimental units. The AlCl3 dosages resulted in considerable changes in the biochemical variables evaluated, especially when the 75 mg·L-1 dosage was applied. The considerable reduction in some variables such as nitrate reductase, glycine betaine and total soluble carbohydrates of these compounds to the applied AlCl3·6H2O dosages, is a way to create resistance mechanisms to try to overcome stress or as a way of showing limitations in the applied dosages. Digestive enzymes inhibition, antioxidant and antiglycation activities of phenolic compounds from jabuticaba (Plinia cauliflora) peel

In this study, jabuticaba peel purified phenolic extracts were studied regarding their potential inhibitory effects on digestive enzymes linked to diabetes mellitus (DM) and obesity, inhibitory activities towards glycation of bovine serum albumin (BSA), and antioxidant activities. The impact of in vitro gastrointestinal digestion (GID) on the stability of anthocyanins and bioactivities was also evaluated. The analyzed extracts exhibited significant inhibitory activities of α-glucosidase (IC50: 0.47–5.20 mg/mL), α-amylase (IC50: 0.45–1.88 mg/mL), and lipase (IC50: 13.52–111.51 mg/mL). The extracts also inhibited the glycation of BSA (IC50: 0.23–7.07 mg/mL) and showed relevant antioxidant activities. The correlation analysis indicated anthocyanins as one of the main contributing compounds to the bioactivities studied. Cyanidin-3-glucoside was the major anthocyanin identified in the extracts by HPLC analysis. After GID, there was a decrease in the total anthocyanin content (72.77% ± 1.67%) and, consequently, a reduction in the inhibitory activities of carbohydrate digestive enzymes and BSA glycation. This research provided scientific data about the functional properties of jabuticaba peel extracts, which may be a source of dietary compounds with hypoglycaemic, antiglycation, and antioxidant effects.

Gender Differences in Comorbidities and Sleep Patterns of Obese Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the comorbidities and sleep patterns most commonly associated with each gender in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of obese individuals with OSA.?The polysomnographies were carried out in a sleep laboratory environment, using a 15-channel polysomnography setup. Airflow was measured using a nasal pressure cannula/thermistor combination. A standard handbook was used for interpretation of PSG findings. Results: A total of 284 subjects were included in the study, (147 females). The mean age, body mass index and neck circumference were similar between females and males (p?= 0.9579,?p??p?< 0.0001, respectively). On polysomnography, females exhibited longer latency to REM sleep (146.50 ± 85.93 vs. 122.3 ± 68.28,?p?= 0.0210) and a higher percentage of?delta sleep (10.09 ± 7.48 vs. 7.55 ± 6.57,?p?= 0.0037);males had more frequent microarousals (38.37?± 27.44 vs. 28.07 ± 21.23,?p?= 0.0017) and a higher AHI score (30.56 ± 27.52 vs. 17.31 ± 21.23,?p?< 0.0001). The comorbidities most commonly associated with female gender were diabetes (29% vs. 9.49%,?p?= 0.0132), hypothyroidism (20% vs. 2.19%,?p?< 0.0001), and depression (81.63% vs. 51.22%,?p?< 0.0001). Male gender was associated with myocardial infarction (6.57% vs. 1.38%,?p?= 0.0245) and alcohol intake (33.88% vs. 11.34%,?p?< 0.0001). Obese males with OSA have a larger?neck circumference and higher AHI and arousal indices than females. Conclusions: There are genderdifferences both in the sleep patterns and in the comorbidities of patients with OSA. Men had a larger neck circumference, higher apnea and sleep fragmentation scores, were more likely to consume alcohol, and were more likely to have a history of myocardial infarction than women.

Role of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Fibromyalgia: A Systematic Review

A literature search of articles from 2002-2019 was performed using Medline, Embase, Cochrane, LILACS, IBECS, CRD, and Epistemonikos databases, to analyze the effects of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in the treatment of fibromyalgia. Twenty-seven articles were selected in which CBT was performed exclusively by specialist physicians, associated or not with conventional pharmacological treatment and/or physical exercise. In most articles, CBT worked with self-knowledge and cognitive restructuring, attempting to reduce pain perception, and it showed a general improvement in daily activities by decreasing patient’s limitations, such as morning stiffness. The literature showed significant correlations of CBT in pain processing over time. When CBT was compared to conventional pharmacological therapy, a certain superiority of CBT could be observed concerning the quality of life, catastrophizing, and acceptance of pain. However, when they were simultaneously applied, this improvement in quality of life was not observed.

Elemental Composition of PM<sub>2.5</sub>in araraquara City (Southeast Brazil) during Seasons with and without Sugar Cane Burning

Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter below 2.5 μm (PM2.5), present in polluted air, has been associated with a large spectrum of health impairments, mainly because of its deep deposition into the lungs. araraquara City (Southeast Brazil) is surrounded by sugar-cane plantations, which are burned to facilitate the harvesting;this process causes environmental pollution due to the large amounts of soot that are released into the atmosphere. In this work, the elemental composition of PM2.5 was studied in two scenarios, namely in sugar-cane harvesting (HV) and in non-harvesting (NHV) seasons. The sampling strategy included one campaign in each season. PM2.5 was collected using a dichotomous sampler (10 L·min-1, 24 h) with PTFE filters. Information concerning the bulk elemental concentration was provided by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence. Enrichment factor analysis indicated that S, Cl, K, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb were highly enriched relative to their crustal ratios (to Al). Principal component analysis was used to get some insight about the sources of the elements. Principal component 1 (PC1) explained 30.5% of data variance. The elements that had high loading (>0.7) were: S, Cr, As, and Pb;these are associated with combustion of fossil fuels. In principal component 2 (PC2), Cl, Cu, Zn, and Cd showed high loadings;these elements are associated with biomass burning. The Ni concentration found is three times larger than the threshold of risk for lung cancer, as recommended by the World Health Organization.
