AIM: To identify patients with or without liver steatosis and its severity in treatment-na?ve patients affected by hepatitis C virus(HCV) ***: We included 56 HCV infected patients, and assessed the amount of liver fat by histomorphometry, and its relationships with fat and lean mass at different parts of the body(by densitometry), hormones [insulin, homeostatic model assessment(HOMA)], adipokines(resistin, adiponectin, leptin), and cytokines(tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin-6).RESULTS: Although the intensity of liver steatosis is related to trunk fat mass and HOMA, 33% of patients showed no liver steatosis, and this finding was not related to body mass index or genotype. Besides trunkfat mass, no other factor was related to the presence or not of liver steatosis, or to the intensity of it, by multivariate analysis. Lean mass was not related to liver steatosis. Adiponectin levels were lower among patients. No differences were observed in leptin and ***: Steatosis in HCV infection is common(67.2%), and closely related to trunk fat, and insulin resistance, but not with leg fat mass or adipokines.

Aims In the Oregon of USA,the control of western juniper(Juniperus occidentalis)is an accepted rangeland management practice to restore sagebrush steppe habitats of importance to wildlife and *** effects of juniper cutting on ecosystem nitrogen,however,have not been well addressed although woody plant control has important implications for local watershed management and regional nitrogen *** We quantified ecosystem nitrogen stocks in two adjacent watersheds,comprised of a treated watershed(most juniper removed)and an untreated watershed(juniper not removed).Thirteen years after juniper removal,we measured aboveground nitrogen stocks for juniper trees,shrubs,grasses and litter in both *** also measured belowground nitrogen stocks(roots and soil)in both watersheds at two soil depths(0–25 and 25–50 cm).Important Findings Aboveground nitrogen stocks were 6.9 times greater in the untreated than in the treated watershed considering the much larger aboveground ***,root nitrogen stocks were 3.1 times greater in the treated one due to the gain of understory root biomass associated with juniper *** nitrogen stocks at both 0–25 and 25–50 cm depths were not affected by juniper ***,total ecosystem nitrogen stocks did not differ between the treated(9536 kg N ha−1)and untreated(9456 kg N ha−1)*** greatest ecosystem nitrogen accumulation(at least 95%total ecosystem nitrogen)resided belowground(soil 0–50 cm and roots)in both *** study provides evidence that the benefits of juniper removal can be attained without significantly affecting the capacity of ecosystem nitrogen storage.

Aims Although increases in precipitation variability in arid ecosystems are projected due to climate change,the response of desert shrub communities to precipitation change has not been fully *** knowledge is important since drought-adapted plants exhibit varied mechanisms of survival that may contribute to species *** We tested the responses of eight drought-adapted plants,a mix of graminoids,shrubs and forbs to three summer precipitation scenarios(1.3,2.6 and 3.9 cm per month)in a common garden experiment in the Great Basin(Owens Valley,California).Changes in mineral nutrient uptake(carbon,nitrogen,phosphorus,potassium,calcium,magnesium,manganese,copper,boron,zinc,iron and sodium)and gas exchange parameters(photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance)were investigated in the studied *** Findings Two graminoids(Sporobolus airoides and Leymus triticoides)and one salt tolerant shrub species(Atriplex confertifolia)responded to increased water availability with increases in photosynthetic rate and/or stomatal *** was a significant correlation between water availability and uptake of nutrients for five out of eight *** tridentata,with higher rates of photosynthesis,contained greater amounts of potassium,copper and boron,while Juncus arcticus,with higher rates of photosynthesis,contained greater amounts of magnesium and iron,and less *** arcticus and three salt-adapted species(***,Distichlis spicata and ***)exhibited correlations with stomatal conductance and concentrations of *** indicate that differential physiological response mechanisms to increased moisture and associated nutrient uptake strategies in drought-adapted species may mediate coexistence under increased summer precipitation.

Phenolic compounds are related to high biological activity,avoiding oxidation in food and human *** are by-products derived from the pecan nut processing that contain important amounts of phenols which biological activity must be *** research aimed to evaluate the antioxidant(DPPH,ABTS,FRAP and hemolysis)and anti-inflammatory activities of shell extracts from pecan nuts harvested during the crop production cycle 2018 and 2019,as well as the in vitro digestibility of their phenolic compounds,including *** showed that extracts from the crop production cycle 2018 obtained the highest yield,while those from 2019 contained the highest concentration of phenolic compounds,flavonoids and antioxidant capacity determined by DPPH(22.96 mmol ET),ABTS(91.55 mmol ET)and inhibition of hemolysis(92.12%).The anti-inflammatory activity exhibited an inhibition of the elastase enzyme up to 50 min and the bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds reached up to 32%.These results showed that pecan nutshell extracts are an important source of biologically active compounds,thus,they are suitable to be used as commodities in different fields such as agricultural,food and pharmaceutical *** studies must be carried out in order to elucidate the activity of nutshell extracts within in vivo systems.

Orchiectomy is the recommended treatment for many testicular ***,testicular prosthesis placement is not always performed for different *** this study,we aimed to evaluate patients'opinions and the impact on sexual function and quality of *** retrospective observational single-center study included patients who underwent orchiectomy between January 2014 and December 2020 at the Department of Urology,Braga's Hospital(Braga,Portugal),where testicular implants were always available and the decision to undergo the procedure was made fully independent of *** completed four questionnaires that assessed demographic data,satisfaction,self-esteem,and sexual *** the 96 patients who underwent orchidectomy,59 replied to the questionnaires,and of these patients,86.4%decided to undergo silicone-based testicular prostheses *** remaining 13.6%refused the implant based on concerns about complications(37.5%),because they felt that it was unnecessary(37.5%),or because it was not offered by the doctor(25.0%).Overall,96.1%of these patients were satisfied with the implant;however,25.5%classified it as"too firm".No statistically significant differences were found in sexual function(all P>0.05).However,it can be observed that there are more patients with prostheses presenting normal sexual activity compared to patients without prostheses(74.0%vs 50.0%),and none of them reported severe erectile dysfunction(0 vs 16.7%).Regarding self-esteem,both patients with and without prostheses present very similar average scores with no statistically significant *** present study highlights the highest level of satisfaction among patients who received testicular *** prostheses implantation is a safe procedure that does not hamper sexual function after orchiectomy.
