Assessing the Environmental Impact of Extensive Beef Production in Grazing Lands of Argentina

Because of environmental constraints,beef cattle was for more than a century the only viable farming option in the extensive semiarid and subhumid lands of Argentina and the main source of nutrients for humans as ***,a growing concern and criticism have risen today about its possible negative impact on the climate and the *** worries tend to affect current public opinions,national policies,and international *** on 40 beef cattle farms scattered across different semiarid and subhumid regions of Argentina,here we evaluated the impact of extensive cattle production on carbon,water,and nutrient ***-Cycle Assessment(LCA)and Land-Based Assessment(LBA)were the two approaches we used here to compare the environmental impact of beef *** the environmental footprint(EF)resulting from LCA expresses the impact per unit of food,the environmental balance(EB),derived from LBA,aims at quantifying the impact per unit of *** such,the EB considers both negative and positive impacts on the farm as an integrated *** standardized procedures,we evaluated EF and EB up to the farm gate,leaving aside delocalized post-farm impacts such as those of processing,packaging,and transportation that occur beyond the farm *** agreement with previous evidence,our results show that the EF tends to decrease as per-head production *** coefficients and statistical significance were the following for carbon(R=−0.574;pnd n(R=−0.704;pnd Phosphorus(P)pollution(R=−0.802;pntrary,the EB seems to be highly sensitive,and as per-hectare beef production *** were the following for carbon emissions(CE:R=0.955;pnsumption(WC:R=0.822;pnitrogen excretion(nE:R=0.948;pnd phosphorus excretion(PE:R=0.945;pnotion of EF is useful to evaluate the environmental impact in intensive beef

Gastrotomy closure with a new tissue anchoring device:A porcine survival study

AIM: To evaluate the feasibility, reproducibility and efficacy of a new tissue anchoring device in a porcine survival model. METHODS: Gastrotomies were performed using a needle-knife and balloon dilator in 10 female Yorkshire pigs weighing 30-35 kg. Gastric closure was attempted using a new tissue anchoring device. The tightness of the closure was confirmed by means of air insufflation and the ability to maintain gastric distension with stability in peritoneal pressure measured with a Veress needle. All animals were monitored daily for signs of peritonitis and sepsis over 14 d. During necropsy, the peritoneal cavity and the gastric access site were ***: Transgastric access, closure and 14 d survival was achieved in all pigs. The mean closure time was 18.1 ± 19.2 min and a mean of 2.1 ± 1 devices were used. Supplementary clips were necessary in 2 cases. The closure time was progressively reduced (24.8 ± 13.9 min in the first 5 pigs vs 11.4 ± 5.9 min in the last 5, P = nS). At necropsy, the gastric access site was correctly closed in all cases with all brace-bars present. One device was misplaced in the mesocolon. Minimal adhesions were observed in 3 pigs and signs of mild peritonitis and adhesions in one. COnCLUSIOnS: The use of this new tissue anchoring device in porcine stomachs is feasible, reproducible and effective and requires a short learning curve.

Transmission of n-Atoms Produced by n2Flowing Microwave Afterglows through Hollow Tubes

Transmission of n-atoms (T n ) through small diameters tubes (1.5 and 3 mm internal diameter (i.d) and 9, 50 and 80 cm length for silicone tubes, 1.5 mm i.d and 6.5 cm length for stainless steel tubes) has been measured in late n2 and Ar-n2 flowing afterglows of microwave plasmas in continuous and pulsed gas injection at a flow rate of 1 and 3 Standard liter by minute (Slm), a gas pressure from 2 to 4 Torr for n2 and 20 Torr for Ar-1%n2 and a plasma power from 150 to 300 Watt. From the experimental Tn values, it is deduced the γ-destruction probability inside the tube walls as being y = (1-1.6)×10-3 for the silicon tubes and y = (1.6-2)×10-2 for the stainless steel tubes.

Determination of n and O-Atoms, of n2(A) and n2(X, v >13) Metastable Molecules and n2+Ion Densities in the Afterglows of Ar-n2Microwave Discharges

Early afterglows of Ar-n2 flowing microwave discharges are characterized by optical emission spectroscopy. The n and O atoms, the n2(A) and n2(X, v > 13) metastable molecules and n2+ ion densities are determined by optical emission spectroscopy after calibration by nO titration for n and O-atoms and measurements of nO and n2 band intensities. For an Ar-xn2 gas mixture with × increasing from 2 to 100% at 4 Torr, 100 Watt and an afterglow time of 3 × 10- 3 s at the 5 liter reactor inlet, it is found densities in the ranges of (2 - 6) × 1014 cm- 3 for n-atoms, one order of magnitude lower for n2(X, v > 13) and for O-atoms (coming from air impurity), of 1010 - 1011 cm- 3 for n2(A) and of 108 - 109 cm- 3 for n2+.

In 2011 a protocol for medical abortions (MA) up to 49 days of pregnancy was approved by the Ministry of Health of Catalonia’s autonomous government and it was progressively introduced through the public network of the Sexual and Reproductive Health Units (SRHU). In 2014, a new protocol extended to 63 days of pregnancy was set up. Data come from the official abortion registry held by the Ministry of Health, which collects statistical data from all abortions performed in Catalonia. Since 2011, the number and rate of abortions in Catalonia have decreased while the number of health centers providing abortions has increased, especially the SRHU. The proportion of MA abortions went from 0.4% (2010) to 36.9% (2014), while the percentage of early abortions (up to 7 weeks) surged by 14.7%. SRHU reported 73.4% of all MA and hospitals performed 18.7% of the total, while outpatient centers accounted for the remaining 7.9%. Compared to surgical abortions, women having had MA have higher levels of education and lower rates of unemployment. Furthermore, they have more living offspring and fewer previous terminations as well as more frequent attendance to a public family planning center.

Mineralogic Characterization and Petroleum Potential of Clays (Shales) of the n’Kappa Formation (Paléocene-Eocene) in the Douala Sedimentary Sub-basin (South-West Cameroon)

The aim of this research work was to report a facies analysis of the n’Kappa formation, identified the clay minerals present in those facies and evaluate their oil potential. For that to be done, Lithostratigraphic descriptions were performed on three natural outcrops chosen in three different localities of the northern border of Douala sedimentary basin. Ten shaly samples were then collected on those outcrops and submit to X ray diffraction and Rock-Eval pyrolysis. Lithologically, the n’Kappa formation is made up of dark to grey shales and fine to coarse sandtones. The mineralogic content of the shales is made up of Kaolinite, dickite, low quartz and vaterite. Those shaly facies present high amount of immature organic matter (average TOC content around 2%). The petroleum potential is fair to poor (average S2 for all the samples around 3.33 mg HC/g of rock) though some samples (M1 and M2) presenting a good petroleum potential up to 6.62 kg HC/t of rock and 6.44 kg HC/t of rock respectively. They have undergone a low degree of diagenesis (early to burying diagenesis). This is evidenced by the predominance of kaolinite and dickite, low quartz and vaterite which are minerals stable at low temperature.

A standard ultramarine pigment was used to produce phase change material composites, by adsorbing n-hexadecane paraffin around the pigment surface with the aim of obtaining a pigment providing thermal storage capacity apart from color. Vacuum impregnation method was employed optimizing the process variables to maximize the latent heat of the hexadecane/pigment composite. In addition to the process optimization, the stability of the composite having the maximum latent heat was investigated. The hexadecane/pigment composite providing the highest latent heat has a Latent heat of fusion of 44 J/g (around a 20%wt. hexadecane adsorbed in the pigment). Durability of the material was tested by thermo-diffractometric measurements. The results indicate slow reduction of the area intensity up to 6.5% after the 100 cycles.
