Antiseptic Efficacy of A Soap Made from Biosurfactants Isolated from Bacillus and Lactobacillus against Pathogenic Bacteria

The aim of our study was to use a biosurfactant produced by Bacillus and Lactobacillus isolates as an antiseptic in the formulation of local soap. A total of 60 isolates were characterized by microbiological techniques (30 Bacillus and 30 Lactobacillus) and the ability to produce biosurfactants was demonstrated by a hydrocarbon emulsification index (E24). The emulsification indexes (E24) varied from 9% to 100% for Bacillus and from 33% to 100% for Lactobacillus as well. The antagonistic assay showed that biosurfactants were able to inhibit the formation of biofilms and growth of pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhirium, Shigella boydii and Proteus mirabilis. The biosurfactant consortium (BioC) from Bacillus consortium and from Lactobacillus was able to inhibit biofilm formation and the pathogens growth. The BioC was stable to alkaline pH and the temperatures stability of Biosurfactant was ranging from 50°C to 90°C. The soap was made by the cold saponification process using one biosurfactant consortium formulated. This soap has a pH of 10 and showed good cleaning power and good foam stability. Similarly, the soap showed good antiseptic power and disinfection power against all pathogens tested. Handwashing is critical to preventing disease transmission. The persistence of pathogens in waste water was evaluated. The BioS produced showed good disinfection power against all pathogens tested. The valor of reduction on the hands and in the waste water was significantly more than compared to the control soaps used. This soap could be used in the prevention, fighting, and treatment of bacterial and viral infections.

Droplet digital PCR for quantification of ITGA6 in a stool mRNA assay for the detection of colorectal cancers

AIM To investigate the use of droplet digital polymerase chain reaction(dd PCR) for detecting host m RNA markers in stools as a non-invasive test for colorectal cancer *** dd PCR and quantitative PCR were compared side by side for their performance in the detection of ITGA6 and ITGA6 A transcripts in stool samples obtained from patients with various types of colorectal lesions(advanced adenomas and stage Ⅱ-Ⅳ colorectal cancers) and control(patients displaying no pathological findings) using duplex Taq Man reactions for both methods. ITGA6 and ITGA6 A were chosen for this proof-of-concept study based on their relative medium and low abundance in stool samples, respectively, as established in a previous *** We found that the dd PCR and q PCR methods per-formed equally well in this Taq Man duplex assay for the detection of ITGA6 and ITGA6 A transcripts in stools of patients with colorectal lesions. For ITGA6, receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis showed comparable areas under the curve of 0.91(P < 0.0001) and 0.89-0.90(P < 0.0001) for the prediction of advanced adenomas and colorectal cancers, respectively. ITGA6 A, which was detected at very low levels in control patients, was found to be significantly elevated(over 40 times) in stage Ⅱ and Ⅲ colorectal cancers(P < 0.0002). Comparison of the two sets of data revealed a strong correlation of the copy numbers obtained by dd PCR and q PCR for both ITGA6 and ITGA6 *** We found that ITGA6 and ITGA6 A detection in stools of patients with colorectal cancers with dd PCR is comparable to that of q PCR using Taq Man assays.

Global progress against cancer—challenges and opportunities

The last ten years have seen remarkable progress in cancer research. However, despite significant breakthroughs in the understanding, prevention, and treatment of cancer, the disease continues to affect millions of people worldwide. Cancer＇s complexity compounded with financial, policy and regulatory roadblocks has slowed the rate of progress being made against cancer. In this paper, we review a few of the most recent breakthroughs that are fueling medical advances and bringing new hope for patients affected by this devastating disease. We also address the challenges facing us and the opportunities to accelerate future progress against cancer. The efforts of the American Association for Cancer Research （AACK） to address the cancer burden already extend beyond the borders of the United States of America. The AACR is committed to increasing its efforts to stem the tide of cancer worldwide by promoting innovative programs, strategies, and initiatives for cancer researchers and all those engaged in cancer-related biomedical sciences around the world.

Exact Efficient Handling of Interrupted Illumination in Helical Cone-Beam Computed Tomography with Arbitrary Pitch

We present a theoretically-exact and stable computed tomography （CT） reconstruction algorithm that is capable of handling interrupted illumination and therefore of using all measured data at arbitrary pitch This algorithm is based on a differentiated backprojection （DBP） on M-lines. First, we discuss the problem of interrupted illumination and how it affects the DBP. Then we show that it is possible to take advantage of some properties of the DBP to compensate for the effects of interrupted illumination in a mathematically exact way. From there, we have developed an efficient algorithm which we have successfully implemented. We show encouraging preliminary results using both computer-simulated data and real data. Our results show that our method is capable of achieving a substantial reduction of image noise when decreasing the helix pitch compared with the maximum pitch case. We conclude that the proposed algorithm defines for the first time a theoretically-exact and stable reconstruction method that is capable of beneficially using all measured data at arbitrary pitch.

PM_(2.5)characterization of primary and secondary organic aerosols in two urban-industrial areas in the East Mediterranean

Primary and secondary organic aerosols in PM_(2.5)were investigated over a one-year campaign at Zouk Mikael and Fiaa,*** n-alkanes concentrations were quite similar at both sites(26-29 ng/m^(3))and mainly explained by anthropogenic emissions rather than natural *** concentrations of total Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons(PAHs)were nearly three times higher at Zouk Mikael(2.56 ng/m^(3))compared to Fiaa(0.95 ng/m^(3)),especially for indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene linked to the presence of the power plant.A characteristic indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene/(indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene+benzo[g,h,i]perylene)ratio in the range0.8-1.0 was determined for heavy fuel oil combustion from the power *** acids and hopanes were also investigated and were assigned to cooking activities and vehicular emissions *** were identified for the first time in Lebanon with high concentrations at Zouk and Fiaa(106.88 and 97.68 ng/m^(3) respectively).Moreover,the biogenic secondary aerosols revealed higher concentrations in *** total terpene concentration varied between 131 ng/m^(3) at Zouk Mikael in winter to 469 ng/m3 at Fiaa in ***,the concentrations of the dicarboxylic acids especially for adipic and phthalic acids were more influenced by anthropogenic *** analysis of molecular markers and diagnostic ratios indicated that the sites were strongly affected by anthropogenic sources such as waste open burning,diesel private generators,cooking activities,road transport,power plant,and industrial ***,results showed different pattern during winter and summer ***,higher concentrations of biogenic markers were clearly encountered during the summer period.

Assessing the determinants of reproductive success is critical but often complicated because of complex interactions between parental traits and environmental conditions occurring during several stages of a reproductive ***,we used a simplified ecological situation-an amphibian species lacking post-oviposition parental care-and a laboratory approach to investigate the relationships between parental(both maternal and paternal)phenotypes(body size and condition)and reproductive success(fecundity,egg size,embryonic and larval duration,larval and metamorphic morphology).We found significant effects of maternal phenotype on fecundity,hatching success,and tadpole size,as well as on the duration of larval ***,and more surprisingly,we also found a potential contribution of the paternal phenotype occurring during early(embryonic development duration)offspring *** our study focused on life-history traits such as body size and development duration,additional mechanisms involving physiological costs of development may well mediate the relationships between parental phenotypes and offspring *** studies are required to decipher the mechanisms underlying our findings in order to clarify the mechanistic basis of the links between parental phenotypes and offspring development.

Dental stem cell-conditioned medium for tissue regeneration: Optimization of production and storage

BACKGROUND Mesenchymal stem cells(MSC)effects on tissue regeneration are mainly mediated by their secreted substances(secretome),inducing their paracrine *** Conditioned medium(CM),including soluble factors(proteins,nucleic acids,lipids)and extracellular vesicles is emerging as a potential alternative to cell ***,the manufacturing of CM suffers from variable procedures and protocols leading to varying results between ***,there is no welldefined optimized procedure targeting specific applications in regenerative *** To focus on conditioned medium produced from dental MSC(DMSC-CM),we reviewed the current parameters and manufacturing protocols,in order to propose a standardization and optimization of these manufacturing *** We have selected all publications investigating the effects of dental MSC secretome in in vitro and in vivo models of tissue regeneration,in accordance with the PRISMA *** A total of 351 results were *** based on the inclusion criteria described above,118 unique articles were included in the systematic ***-CM production was considered at three stages:before CM recovery(cell sources for CM),during CM production(culture conditions)and after production(CM treatment).CONCLUSION No clear consensus could be recovered as evidence-based methods,but we were able to describe the most commonly used protocols:donors under 30 years of age,dental pulp stem cells and exfoliated deciduous tooth stem cells with cell passage between 1 and 5,at a confluence of 70%to 80%.CM were often collected during 48 h,and stored at-80°*** is important to point out that the preconditioning environment had a significant impact on DMSCCM content and efficiency.

Water quality in forest and village ponds in Burkina Faso(western Africa)

Forest ecosystems help conserve the quality of water resources in aquatic habitats. The conservation of biological diversity in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems remains a communal concern. Aquatic ecosystems and resources are vulnerable but can be preserved and protected by forests. In sub-Saharan regions of Africa, water from ecosystems such as ponds still play important role in the livelihood of local populations. Water from temporary ponds is used by local populations for multiple needs; however, in this part of the world, the population is increasing, thus increasing human needs and activities and land use in the region. Land-use changes lead to deforestation, land degradation and the decline in freshwater, affecting human health and well-being. Forest degradation leads to the decline in ecosystem goods and services, particularly those related to watersheds. This study conducted in eastern Burkina Faso aimed to assess water quality of temporary ponds in protected forest areas (reserves) and surrounding villages. It was conducted in 61 temporary ponds where physical, chemical and biological variables were measured, such as water surface area, depth, transparency, macrophyte cover, pH, dissolved O2, conductivity, nutrient concentrations and algae biomass. The results showed that at p < 5%, water surface area (p = 0.02), depth (p = 0.00), nutrient content (p = 0.00), and algae biomass (p = 0.04) were significantly higher outside reserves than inside reserves. In contrast, macrophyte cover (mean cover percentages 53 vs. 44.5%) and water transparency (p = 0.02) were higher inside reserves. The variations in conductivity and pH were not significant. All trends showed the influences of human activities on water characteristics and the role forests and land cover had in preventing negative human impacts and disturbance of temporary ponds. Implications of safety requirements for the treatment of THMC processes in geological disposal systems for radioactive waste

The mission of nuclear safety authorities in national radioactive waste disposal programmes is to ensure that people and the environment are protected against the hazards of ionising radiations emitted by the *** implies the establishment of safety requirements and the oversight of the activities of the waste management organisation in charge of implementing the *** Belgium,the safety requirements for geological disposal rest on the following principles:defence-in-depth,demonstrability and the radiation protection principles elaborated by the International Commission on Radiological Protection(ICRP).Applying these principles requires notably an appropriate identification and characterisation of the processes upon which the safety functions fulfilled by the disposal system rely and of the processes that may affect the system ***,research and development(R&D)on safety-relevant thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical(THMC)issues is important to build confidence in the safety *** paper points out the key THMC processes that might influence radionuclide transport in a disposal system and its surrounding environment,considering the dynamic nature of these *** nature and significance are expected to change according to prevailing internal and external conditions,which evolve from the repository construction phase to the whole heatingecooling cycle of decaying waste after *** these processes have a potential impact on safety,it is essential to identify and to understand them properly when developing a disposal concept to ensure compliance with relevant safety *** particular,the investigation of THMC processes is needed to manage *** includes the identification and characterisation of uncertainties as well as for the understanding of their safety-relevance.R&D may also be necessary to reduce uncertainties of which the magnitude does not allow demonstrating the safety of the disposal system.
