Changes with Age and the Effect of Recombinant Human BMP-2 on Proteoglycan and Collagen Gene Expression in Rabbit Anulus Fibrosus Cells

In order to compare the difference between young and old intervertebral disc cells and theirresponsiveness to recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2),disc cells were isolatedfrom the anulus fibrosus (AF) and transition zones of lumbar discs from eight old and eight young NewZealand white *** with the ceils from the young rabbits,cells from old rabbits respond less torhBMP-2 treatment with respect to sulfated-glycosaminoglycan (sGAG) synthesis and aggrecan *** in collagen Ⅰ and collagen Ⅱ gene expressions,there are no significant differences betweenthe old and the *** comparing sGAG content,aggrecan,and collagen Ⅱ gene expression of the oldAF cells after rhBMP-2 treatment with that of the young AF cells without rhBMP-2 treatment,the old AFcells with rhBMP-2 treatment have a greater capacity to synthesize sGAG bound in the cells and to releasesGAG in the media,as well as to express aggrecan and collagen Ⅱ *** can be concluded that old AF cellsafter rhBMP-2 treatment have a greater capacity to synthesize sGAG and express aggrecan and collagen Ⅱ ascompared to young AF cells without rhBMP-2 *** rhBMP-2 can reverse the decline in theanabolic capacity of the disc cells with *** it seems that rhBMP-2 has potential for use as an agent toretard a key component of disc degeneration and loss of disc matrix.

Noise Characteristics of Centrifugal Blower with Low Solidity Cascade Diffuser(Noise Reduction by means of Small Groove Located at LSD Blade Leading Tip)

This paper deals with the effect of the blade tip-groove of the low solidity cascade diffuser (LSD) on the blowercharacteristic and the noise generated by the LSD. The small grooves were set up at the root and/or tip near theleading edge of the LSD blade. In order to clarify the mechanism of noise increase due to LSD and also to reducethe noise, the relationships between the noise increase based on the LSD, the LSD performance and the secondaryflow formed additionally by the tip-groove were investigated experimentally as well as numerically, especiallyanalyzing flow behaviors in the LSD in view points of flow separation on the suction surface of the LSD bladeand the secondary flow on the side walls. By reducing the stagnation region smaller near the root and/or tip of theLSD blade leading edge, the secondary flow behavior changes remarkably around the LSD blade, as a result, thenoise level and the blower characteristics vary. It can be concluded that, by means of a small tip-groove locatedonly at the shroud side near the LSD blade leading edge, the noise generated by the LSD can be reduced withoutdeteriorations of the LSD performance and the blower characteristics as well.

Heavy metal removal from aqueous solution using carbonaceous K_2S-impregnated adsorbent

A novel carbonaceous adsorbent for heavy metal removal was prepared from raw coal by one-step simple sulfur impregnation using K2S. Raw coal was mixed with K2S powder and then heated at 800℃ for 30 min in nitrogen to produce K2S char. The sulfur content and form in K2S char were determined, and the ability of K2S char to adsorb Zn^2＋, Cd^2＋ and Pb^2＋ was examined. The K2S impregnation was effective at impregnating sulfur into coal, especially in the form of elemental, thiophenic and sulfatic sulfur. The sulfur content of K2S char was higher than those of raw coal and pyrolysis char. The Zn^2＋ removal in 2.4 mmol/L of Zn^2＋ solution by K2S char was higher than raw coal with the removal rate of 100%. K2S char adsorbed Pb^2＋ and Cd^2＋ in 24 mmol/L of Pb^2＋ and Cd^2＋ solution with the removal rate of 97% and 35%, respectively. The elution extents of adsorbed Pb^2＋ and Cd^2＋ were zero in distilled water and 27% in 0.1 mol/L HCl solution. These results indicated that an effective adsorbent for heavy metal ions was prepared from coal using K2S sulfur impregnation, and that the adsorbed metals were strongly retained in K2S char.

Endoscopic diagnosis of sessile serrated adenoma/polyp with and without dysplasia/carcinoma

Sessile serrated adenoma/polyps(SSA/Ps) are early precursor lesions in the serrated neoplasia pathway, which results in colorectal carcinomas with BRAF mutations, methylation for DNA repair genes, a Cp G island methylator phenotype, and high levels of microsatellite instability. Some of these lesions can rapidly become dysplastic or invasive carcinomas that exhibit high lymphatic invasion and lymph node metastasis potentials. Detecting serrated lesions, including SSA/Ps with and without dysplasia/carcinoma, is critical, but SSA/Ps can be difficult to detect, are inconsistently identified by endoscopists and pathologists, and are often incompletely resected. Therefore, SSA/Ps are considered to be major contributors to "interval cancers". If colonoscopists can identify the specific endoscopic characteristics of SSA/Ps, their detection and the effectiveness of colonoscopy may improve. Here, the endoscopic features of SSA/Ps with and without dysplasia/carcinoma, including the characteristics determined using magnifying endoscopy, are reviewed in the context of previous reports. Endoscopically, these subtle polyps are like hyperplastic polyps, because they are slightly elevated and pale. Unlike hyperplastic polyps, SSA/Ps are usually larger than 5 mm, frequently covered by a thin layer called the ‘‘mucus cap'', and are more commonly located in the proximal colon. Magnifying narrow-band imaging findings, which include dark spots inside the crypts and varicose microvascular vessels, in addition to the type II-open pit patterns detected using magnifying chromoendoscopy, effectively differentiate SSA/Ps from hyperplastic polyps. The lesions' endoscopic characteristics, which include their(semi)pedunculated morphologies, double elevations, central depressions, and reddishness, and the use of magnifying endoscopy, might help to detect dysplasia/carcinoma within SSA/Ps. Efficient gasification of wet biomass residue to produce middle caloric gas

Various process residues represent a kind of biomass resource already concentrated but containing water as much as 60 wt.%. These materials are generally treated as waste or simply combusted directly to generate heat. Recently, we attempted to convert them into middle caloric gas to substitute for natural gas, as a chemical or a high-rank gaseous fuel for advanced combustion utilities. Such conversion is implemented through dual fluidized bed gasification （DFBG）. Concerning the high water content of the fuels, DFBG was suggested to accomplish either with high-efficiency fuel drying in advance or direct decoupling of fuel drying/pyrolysis from char gasification and tar/hydrocarbon reforming. Along with fuel drying, calcium-based catalyst can be impregnated into the fuel, without much additional cost, to increase the fuel＇s gasification reactivity and to reduce tar formation. This article reports the Ca impregnation method and its resulting effects on gasification reactivity and tar suppression ability. Meanwhile, the principle of directly gasifying wet fuel with decoupled dual fluidized bed gasification （D-DFBG） is also highlighted.

More efficient induction of genotoxicity by high-LET Fe-particle radiation than low-LET X-ray radiation at low doses

Objective:To understand differential effects on induction of genotoxicity and genomic instability(GI)by high-LET particle radiation and low-LET photon radiation,based on ground-based experiments using total body irradiation(TBI)of mice with Fe-particle radiation and X-ray ***:TBI was delivered to C57BL/6J Jms strain female mice of 8 weeks old at a dose ranging from 0.1 to 3.0 Gy of Fe-particle radiation or at a dose ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 Gy of X-ray *** of genotoxicity and GI by TBI was determined respectively at 1 and 2 months after exposure using frequency of micronuclei in bone marrow erythrocytes as the *** of bone marrow cell proliferation by TBI was measured as reduced *** conditions were also ***:TBI,regardless of the type of radiation,caused statistically significant increase in genotoxicity at 1 month after exposure,but did not induce GI at 2 months after exposure even at higher doses(>1.0 Gy).The doseresponse curve for the frequency of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes induced by Fe-particle radiation and X-ray radiation was y=0.7798 t 1.7889x–0.5978x^(2)(R^(2)=0.8109)and y=0.7421 t 1.3792x–0.2588 x^(2)(R^(2)=0.8081),*** dose-response curve for the frequency of micronucleated normochromatic erythrocytes induced by Fe-particle radiation and X-ray radiation was y=0.7191 t 1.4545x–0.4978x^(2)(R^(2)=0.7047)and y=0.658 t 1.344x–0.2531x^(2)(R^(2)=0.7853),*** general,high-LET Fe-particle radiation was more efficient in inducing genotoxicity than low-LET X-ray radiation at lower doses(<0.5 Gy).Conclusions:These results further confirm that exposure to TBI,even at higher doses and regardless the type of radiation,does not induce GI in C57BL/6J strain mice measured as increased micronuclei in bone marrow *** findings indicate that radiation-induced GI is mouse strain dependent and suggest that more comprehensive studies should be

SNOM Observations of Surface Plasmon Polaritons on Metal Heterostructures

We observe surface plasmon polariton （SPP） refraction on a metal heterostructured sample with a scattered-type scanning near-field optical microscope （SNOM）. The sample consists of AI and Au in-plane whose boundary is smooth enough with proper etching time. SPPs excited on the AI film travel to the boundary and a portion of SPPs propagates into the Au film. In addition, interference fringes appear in the SNOM image bent at the boundary. The result is analysed with effective index method and the refracted angle is explained by Shell＇s law.

Influences of Casting Pressure Conditions on the Quality and Properties of a Magnesium Cylinder Head Cover Die Casting

Casting pressure conditions have great influences on the casting defects, such as gas porosity, shrinkage porosity and gas holes. A Mg cylinder head cover die casting was used to experimentally study the influences of casting pressure, the loading time and the piston position of pressure intensification on the variation of pressure and the quality of casting. The results show that casting pressure, the loading time and the piston position of pressure intensification have great influences on the pressure variations in the mold, the quality and performance of casting. The external quality, the density and the tensile strength of casting were improved with the increase of casting pressure and the piston position of pressure intensification and the decrease of the loading time of pressure intensification.
