Risk of colon cancer in hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer patients as predicted by fuzzy modeling:Influence of smoking

AIm： To investigate whether a fuzzy logic model could predict colorectal cancer （CRC） risk engendered by smoking in hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer （HNPCC） patients. mETHODS： Three hundred and forty HNPCC mismatch repair （mmR） mutation carriers from the Creighton University Hereditary Cancer Institute Registry were selected for modeling. Age-dependent curves were generated to elucidate the joint effects between gene mutation （hmLH1 or hmSH2）, gender, and smoking status on the probability of developing CRC. RESULTS： Smoking significantly increased CRC risk in male hmSH2 mutation carriers （P 〈 0.05）. hmLH1 mutations augmented CRC risk relative to hmSH2 mutation carriers for males （P 〈 0.05）. males had a significantly higher risk of CRC than females for hmLH1 non smokers （P 〈 0.05）, hmLH1 smokers （P 〈 0.1） and hmSH2 smokers （P 〈 0.1）. Smoking promoted CRC in a dose-dependent manner in hmSH2 in males （P 〈 0.05）. Females with hmSH2 mutations and both sexes with the hmLH1 groups only demonstrated a smoking effect after an extensive smoking history （P 〈 0.05）. CONCLUSION： CRC promotion by smoking in HNPCC patients is dependent on gene mutation, gender and age. These data demonstrate that fuzzy modeling may enable formulation of clinical risk scores, thereby allowing individualization of CRC prevention strategies.

Phylogenetic Analysis of RhoGAP Domain-Containing Proteins

Proteins containing an Rho GTPase-activating protein （RhoGAP） domain work as molecular switches involved in the regulation of diverse cellular functions. The ability of these GTPases to regulate a wide number of cellular processes comes from their interactions with multiple effectors and inhibitors, including the RhoGAP family, which stimulates their intrinsic GTPase activity. Here, a phylogenetic approach was applied to study the evolutionary relationship among 59 RhoGAP domain-containing proteins. The sequences were aligned by their RhoGAP domains and the phylogenetic hypotheses were generated using maximum Parsimony and Bayesian analyses. The character tracing of two traits, GTPase activity and presence of other domains, indicated a significant phylogenetic signal for both of them.

Interactive effects of carbon dioxide, low temperature, and ultrav｜olet-B radiation on cotton seedling root and shoot morphology and growth

Interactive effects of multiple environmental stresses are predicted to have a negative effect on cotton growth and development and these effects will be exacerbated in the future climate. The objectives of this study were to test the hypothesis that cotton cultivars differ in their responses to multiple environmental factors of （CO2） [400 and 750 μ*** 1 （＋（CO2）], temperature [28/20 and 20/12℃ （-T）], and UV-B radiation [0 and 10 kJ. m2. d ^-1（＋ UV- B）]. A genetic and molecular standard （Tm-1） and three modern cotton cultivars （DP1522B2XE PHY496W3R, and ST4747GLB2） were grown in eight sunlit, controlled environment chambers with control treatment 400 μ***^-1 [CO2], 28/21℃ temperature, and 0 kJ UV B. The results showed significant differences among the cultivars for most of the shoot and root parameters. Plants grown under low temperature alone or as a combination with ＋ UV B treatment caused more detrimental effects on root and shoot vigor. Although the elevated CO2 treatments weakened the damaging effects of higher UV-B levels on cotton growth on all cultivars, increased CO2 could not mask the negative effects of low temperature. When comparing all cultivars, genetic standard Tm-1 produced the smallest values for the majority of traits under CO2, UV-B, and low temperature either alone or in combination with other treatments. Based on principal component analysis, the four cultivars were classified as tolerant （DP1522B2XF）, intermediate （PHY496W3R and ST4747GLB2） and sensitive （Tm-1） to multiple environmental *** temperature was identified as the most damaging treatment to cotton early seedling vigor while elevated CO2 caused the least. Existing variability of cotton cultivars in response tomultiple environmental stresses could allow for selection of cultivars with the best coping ability and higher lint yield for future climate change environments.

Significant association between ABO blood group and pancreatic cancer

AIm:To evaluate whether the ABO blood group is related to pancreatic cancer risk in the general population of the United ***:Using the University of Pittsburgh's clinicalpancreatic cancer registry,the blood donor database from our local blood bank (Central Blood Bank),and the blood product recipient database from the regional transfusion service (Centralized Transfusion Service) in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania,we identified 274 pancreatic cancer patients with previously determined serological ABO blood group *** ABO blood group frequency was compared between these patients and 708842 individual,community-based blood donors who had made donations to Pittsburgh's Central Blood Bank between 1979 and ***:The frequency of blood group A was statistically significantly higher amongst pancreatic cancer patients compared to its frequency amongst the regional blood donors [47.63% vs 39.10%,odds ratio (OR)=1.43,P=0.004].Conversely,the frequency of blood group O was significantly lower amongst pancreatic cancer patients relative to the community blood donors (32.12% vs 43.99%,OR=0.60,P=0.00007).There were limited blood group B (n=38) and AB (n=17) pancreatic cancer patients;the overall P trend value comparing patient to donor blood groups was ***:The ABO blood group is associated with pancreatic cancer *** studies should examine the mechanism linking pancreatic cancer risk to ABO blood group.

Light Electrospun Polyvinylpyrrolidone Blanket for Low Frequencies Sound Absorption

Light polymeric soundproofing materials （density = 63 kg/m3） of interest for the transportation industry were fabricated through electrospinning. Blankets of electrospun polyvinylpyrrolidone （average fiber diameter = （1.6 ± 0.5） or （2.8 ± 0.5） μm） were obtained by stacking disks of electrospun mats. The sound absorption coefficients were measured using the impedance tube instrument based on ASTm E1050 and ISO 10534-2. For a given set of disks （from a minimum of 6） the sound absorption coefficient changed with the frequency （in the range 200-1600 Hz） following a bell shape curve with a maximum （where the coefficient is greater than 0.9） that shifts to lower frequencies at higher piled disks number and greater fiber diameter. This work showed that electrospinning produced sound absorbers with reduced thickness （2-3 cm） and excellent sound-absorption properties in the low and medium frequency range.

Effects of a general practitioner cooperative co-located with an emergency department on patient throughput

BACKGROUND:In 2013 a General Practitioner Cooperative(GPC) was introduced at the Emergency Department(ED) of our *** of the aims of this co-located GPC was to improve throughput of the remaining patients at the *** determine the change in patient flow,we assessed the number of self-referrals,redirection of self-referrals to the GPC and back to the ED,as well as ward and ICU admission rates and length of stay of the remaining ED ***:We conducted a four months' pre-post comparison before and after the implementation of a co-located GPC with an urban ED in the ***:more than half of our ED patients were *** triage,54.5%of these selfreferrals were redirected to the *** assessment at the GPC,8.5%of them were referred back to the *** number of patients treated at the ED declined with 20.3%after the introduction of the *** the remaining ED population,there was a significant increase of highly urgent patients(Pmissions(Pmissions(Pmber of patients at the ED,the total length of stay of patients treated at the ED increased from 14 682 hours in the two months' control period to 14 962 hours in the two months' intervention period,a total increase of 270 hours in two months(Pmprove throughput of the remaining patients at the ED.

以测量精度为1μm的商用坐标测量机(Cmm)为基础,构建了测量范围为25mm×40mm×25mm、测量不确定度约为0.15μm的PTB微纳米专用坐标测量机.研究了Cmm的运动控制系统、恒温室的空调系统以及Cmm的被动隔振系统等对测量结果的影响.由测量结果可以看出,Cmm的运动控制系统产生的噪声水平约为其他误差源的2倍.通过FFT运算,发现未优化系统的短时最大漂移量发生频率为750Hz,对应为运动控制的工作频率.文中还介绍了测量力为1μN光纤探针的测量原理,并给出了对2.5mm短轴的测量结果.
