The present work establishes an analytical model for computing the temperature distribution, fin efficiency and optimum design parameters of a constructal T-shaped porous fin operating in fully wet condition. For more practical results, this study considers a cubic polynomial relationship between the humidity ratio of saturated air and the corresponding fin surface temperature. The temperature distribution has been determined by solving the highly non-linear governing equations using a semi-analytical transformation technique called Differential Transform Method. A comparison of the results with that of a numerical model shows that this transformation method is a very efficient and convenient tool for solution of non-linear problems. The effects of various geometric, thermo-physical and psychometric parameters on the temperature distribution, fin efficiency and optimum design condition have been investigated. Also, a comparison has been presented between solid and porous fins and the results point out that by selecting an appropriate value of porosity, the heat transfer rate can be increased than the corresponding solid fin.

Promoting soil carbon sequestration in agricultural land is one of the viable strategies to decelerate the observed climate ***,soil physical disturbances have aggravated the soil degradation process by accelerating ***,reducing the magnitude and intensity of soil physical disturbance through appropriate farming/agricultural systems is essential to management of soil carbon sink capacity of agricultural *** sites of different land use types/tillage practices,i) nc-till(NT) corn(Zea mays L.)(NTC),ii) conventional till(CT) corn(CTC),iii) pastureland(PL),and iv) native forest(NF),were selected at the North Appalachian Experimental Watershed Station,Ohio,USA to assess the impact of NT farming on soil aggregate indices including water-stable aggregation,mean weight diameter(MWD) and geometric mean diameter(GMD),and soil organic carbon and total nitrogen *** NTC plots received cow manure additions(about 15 t ha^(-1)) every other *** CTC plots involved disking and chisel ploughing and liquid fertilizer application(110 L ha^(-1)).The results showed that both water-stable aggregation and MWD were greater in soil for NTC than for *** the 0-10 cm soil layer,the > 4.75-mm size fraction dominated NTC and was 46%more than that for CTC,whereas the < 0.25-mm size fraction was 380%more for CTC than for *** values of both MWD and GMD in soil for NTC(2.17 mm and 1.19 mm,respectively) were higher than those for CTC(1.47 and 0.72 mm,respectively) in the 0-10 cm soil *** contained 6%-42%and 13%-43%higher organic carbon and total nitrogen contents,respectively,than microaggregates in soil for all *** in soil for NTC contained 40%more organic carbon and total nitrogen over microaggregates in soil for ***,a higher proportion of microaggregates with lower organic carbon contents created a carbon-depleted environment for *** contrast,soil for NTC had more aggregation and contained higher organic

An all-optical adder/subtractor （A/S） unit with the （TOAD） is proposed. The all-optical A/S unit with help of terahertz optical asymmetric demultiplexer a set of all-optical full-adders and optical exclusive- ORs （XORs）, can be used to perform a fast central processor unit using optical hardware components. We try to exploit the advantages of TOAD-based optical switch to design an integrated all-optical circuit which can perform binary addition and subtraction. With computer simulation results confirming the described methods, conclusions are given.

AIM:To examine the activation of the Nalp3 inflammasome and its downstream targets following lipopolysaccharide(LPS) -induced stimulation in the liver. METHODS:Six-to-eight-week-old C57BL/6 chow fed mice were injected intraperitoneally with 0.5μg/g bodyweight LPS and sacrificed 2,4,6,18 or 24 h later. LPS-induced liver damage was confirmed by a biochemical assay to detect alanine aminotransferase(ALT) *** determine if LPS stimulation in the liver led to activation of the inflammasome,real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to evaluate the mRNA expression of components of the Nalp3 ***-linked immunosorbent assays were used to determine the protein expression levels of several downstream targets of the Nalp3 inflammasome,including caspase-1 and two cytokine targets of caspase-1,interleukin(IL) -1βand IL-18. RESULTS:We found that LPS injection resulted in liver damage as indicated by elevated ALT *** was associated with a significant increase in both mRNA and protein levels of the proinflammatory cy-tokine tumor necrosis factor(TNF) -αin the liver,as well as increased levels of TNFs in *** showed that LPS stimulation led to upregulation of mRNA levels in the liver for all the receptor components of the inflammasome,including Nalp3,Nalp1,pannexin-1 and the adaptor molecule apoptosis-associated specklike,caspase recruitment domain-domain containing *** also found increased levels of mRNA and protein for caspase-1,a downstream target of the *** addition,LPS challenge led to increased levels of both mRNA and protein in the liver for two cytokine targets of caspase-1,IL-1βand IL-18. Interestingly,substantial baseline expression of pre-IL1βand pre-IL-18 was found in the *** and caspase-1 activation was indicated by the significant increase in the active forms of IL-1βand IL-18 after LPS stimulation. Culm characteristics of Melocanna baccifera, locally ＇muli＇, culms at five different culm ages of 11 girth classes （5-6 to 15-16 cm） were studied from Cachar Dis- trict of southern Assam, northeast India. We recorded internode length, internode diameter, number of internodes per culm, total culm height, total culm green weight and total culm volume of all five culm age classes. Data were gathered on 165 culms, each culm age class containing 33 culms with 3 culms per girth class. Culm height ranged from 3.2 to 15.3 m with highest mean of 9.15 m （in threeyear old culms） and maximum culm height was recorded in four-year old culms. Highest mean and maximum internode length （27.45 and 54.2 cm, respectively）, internode diameter （3.12 and 4.75 cm, respectively） and total culm green weight （5.42 and 12.87 kg/culm, respectively） were recorded in three-year old culms and lowest in current-year culms. Best fitted regression models for all parameters were developed. Significant linear relationships between culm green weight and culm solid volume were documented for all five culm age classes. Their corresponding best-fit regression models were also developed.

Tumor-necrosis factor-a （TNF-a）-driven nuclear factor-KB （NF-KB） activation and apoptosis are opposing pathways; the growing recognition of these conflicting roles of TNF-a is perplexing. Here, we show that inflammation and apoptosis are time-phased events following TNF-a signaling and that emergence of suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 （SOCS3） expression limits the ongoing NF-KB activation and promotes apoptosis; further, we suggest an altered view of how inflammatory diseases are initiated and sustained. In vitro, TNF-a （50 ng/ml） induced granulocyte SOCS3 protein, inhibited nuclear accumulation of the p65NF-KB subunit and enhanced apoptosis, as shown by DNA laddering, annexin V positivity, and overexpression of caspase-3 and Bax in the late phase, whereas the early phase was marked by NF-KB activation. Conversely, SOCS3 knockdown by small interfering RNA （siRNA） inhibited granulocyte apoptosis and enhanced nuclear accumulation of p65 and 5＇ lipooxygenase expression in the late phase of TNF-a signaling. As apoptosis is associated with SOCS3 abundance, we suggest that these divergent TNF-a-driven events are time-phased, interconnected, opposing control mechanisms and one of the central features through which the immune system resolves pulmonary inflammation. Dysregulation may initiate mucosal inflammation, thus changing the landscape of asthma theraov.

Reflection of stratospheric planetary waves and its impact on tropospheric cold weather over Asia during January 2008 were investigated by applying two dimensional Eliassen-Palm （EP） flux and three-dimensional Plumb wave activity *** planetary wave propagation can clearly be seen in the longitude-height and latitude-height sections of the Plumb wave activity flux and EP flux,respectively,when the stratospheric basic state is partially ***,a wave packet emanating from Baffin Island/coast of Labrador propagated eastward,equatorward and was reflected over Central Eurasia and parts of China,which in turn triggered the advection of cold wind from the northern part of the boreal forest regions and Siberia to the *** wide region of Central Eurasia and China experienced extreme cold weather during the second ten days of January 2008,whereas the extraordinary persistence of the event might have occurred due to an anomalous blocking high in the Urals-Siberia region.

Carcinoma of the gallbladder (CaGB) is the fifth commonest gastrointestinal tract cancer and is endemic in several countries. The interplay of genetic susceptibility, infections, and life style factors has been proposed to be responsible for carcinogenesis of gallbladder. Persistence of infection leading to chronic inflammation, and production of certain toxins and metabolites with carcinogenic potentials, by certain bacteria has been speculated to be involved in the transformation of the gallbladder epithelium. Therefore, any bacteria that have evolved to acquire both of the above carcinogenic mechanisms can cause cancer. Salmonella typhi has been found to be prominently associated with CaGB. Chronic typhoid carriage (persistence) and production of mediators of chronic infl ammation and a genotoxic toxin (cytotoxic distending toxin, CdtB) are also known for this bacterium. Furthermore, the natural concentrating function of the gallbladder might amplify the carcinogenic effect of the mediators of carcinogenesis. In addition to S. typhi, certain species of Helicobacter (H. bilis and H. hepaticus) and Escherichia coli have also been implicated in carcinogenesis. As the isolation rate is verypoor with the presently available culture techniques, the existence of bacteria in a viable but non-cultivable state is quite likely; therefore, sensitive and specif ic molecular techniques might reveal the etiological role of bacterial infection in gallbladder carcinogenesis. If bacteria are found to be causing cancers, then eradication of such infections might help in reducing the incidence of some cancers.
