Community cancer screening at primary care level in Northern India:determinants and policy implications for cancer prevention

The use of complementary and alternative medicines(CAMs)for treatment of acute and chronic diseases is on the rise world over,especially in Asian countries,and mostly in China and ***-induced liver injury(DILI)due to CAM is increasingly reported in the literature from multiple centers all around the world and with large-number patient series published from the West,mostly based on nation-wide DILI networks and multicenter *** DILI networks are lacking among major Asian countries with high incidence of CAM *** medical societies dealing with drug toxicity,CAM practice and hepatobiliary disease have adopted an integrated approach to establishing identification,diagnosis and treatment of CAM-related DILI,representing a systematic approach that could be iterated by other countries for improving patient *** this exhaustive review,we provide published data on CAM-related DILI in Asia,with detail on incidences along with analysis of patient population and their clinical *** and clear discussion on commonly implicated CAM agents in major Asian countries and associated chemical and toxicology analyses as well as descriptions of liver biopsy findings are discussed with future directions.

Reductions in productivity due to land degradation in the drylands of the southwestern United States

Dryland degradation has long been recognized at regional,national,and global scales,yet there are no objective assessments of its location and *** assessment of reductions in net primary production(NPP)due to dry land degradation in the southwestern United States is *** local NPP scaling(LNS)approach was applied to map the extent and magnitude of degrada *** seeks to identifty reference sites in which there is no degradation that can be used as a standard for comparison with other sites that share the same environment,except for *** years were analyzed(2000--2011),using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)data(250 m)from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS)satellite-borne multispectral *** results indicated that the total NPP reductions in the study area were about35.9±4.7Tg C/yr,which equates to 0.31±0.04 Mg C·ha^(-1)· yr^(-1).The NPP reductions in grassland-savanna and livestock grazing areas were large and mostly consistent between years in spite of large variations in overall NPP caused by differences in land-use,interannual variations in rainfall,and other aspects of *** comparison with other cover types,forested land generally had higher NPP reduction per unit *** maps also enable attribution of degradation from the finest management units to entire agencies,such as the Bureau of Land Management,which had 50%less production per unit area than the *** *** degradation within Native American land was low with total NPP reduction of about 2.41±0.24 Tg C/yr and unit area reduction of productivity of just 0.21±0.02 Mg C·ha^(-1)·yr^(-1),yet the percent reduction from potential was in equivalence with other land management agencies.

Variation in Polyphenolics and Antioxidant Activity of Traditional Apple Cultivars from West Himalaya,Uttarakhand

Apple(Malus × domestica) is largely known for polyphenolic and antioxidant properties; however, systematic investigation in the apple growing in the Indian Himalayan region is not carried out. The present study therefore, attempts to quantify polyphenolics and antioxidant activities in three traditional apple cultivars namely 'Benoni', 'Fanny' and 'Rymer' growing at different locations of Uttarakhand(west Himalaya), *** revealed that phenolic(0.94–7.00 mg GAE·g^(-1)FW), flavonoid(1.02–9.86 mg QE·g^(-1)FW), flavonol(0.77–6.92 mg CE·g^(-1) FW), tannin(15.49–37.99 mg TAE·g^(-1) FW) and antioxidant activity(ABTS, 3.10–67.36; DPPH, 4.99–14.06; FRAP, 4.70–39.21 mmol AAE·kg^(-1)FW) varied significantly among the cultivars and maximum content was recorded in Rymer fruits of Mukhwa location. Altitude showed significant(P < 0.05) positive relationship with total phenolic(r = 0.895), flavonoid(r = 0.843), flavonol(r = 0.812), ABTS(r = 0.856) and FRAP activity(r = 0.830). Based on the results, it is concluded that among three cultivars, Rymer is one of the most promising sources of polyphenolic content and antioxidant activity and therefore, recommended for mass plantation at suitable locations in Uttarakhand for harnessing maximum potential.

IBIS-FM radar as a tool for monitoring hill slopes during excavations in hydropower projects:A case study from Bhutan Himalayas

Excavation is common in the construction of hydropower *** for both stable and unstable slopes is a pressing requirement during progressive excavations with or without cut-slope support *** present study is about an excavation carried out in a proposed concrete gravity dam site on the right bank slope of the Punatsangchhu River in western *** the excavation,the right bank abutment witnessed multiple events of slope failures of various *** major landslide occurred on 23 July 2013 in the toe of the right abutment,where foliation/multiple sheared/fractured zones/seams in quartz-feldspathic biotite gneiss dip towards the *** further excavations/piling works,a subsequent landslide on the downstream,within the body of the July 2013 landslide,occurred on 12 August *** a result,a real-time monitoring of the slope became necessary to facilitate further excavations for achieving the dam ***,the advanced slope monitoring instrument like Image By Interferometric Survey e Frequency Modulated(IBIS-FM)radar was deployed for monitoring the right bank slope during the excavation for the construction of~129 m high *** displacement of the hill slope is assessed based on this system by monitoring point locations as well as areas by assigning different threshold values for providing timely *** real-time monitoring was effective in identifying the reactivation of August 2016 landslide that occurred on 22 January ***,this study showcases the efficiency of IBIS-FM radar in monitoring slope instability with sub-millimeter accuracy on a near real-time basis.

Performance of Non-invasive Blood Parameters for Ruling Out Significant Liver Fibrosis in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis B

Background and Aims:Evaluation of significant liver fibro-sis is important for treatment decision and treatment re-sponse evaluation in patients with chronic hepatitis B. Since liver biopsy is invasive and transient elastography (TE) has limited availability, various non-invasive blood parameters need evaluation for their capabilities for detection of signifi-cant fibrosis. Methods:In this retrospective study, records of patients who had undergone liver biopsy for treatment-na?ve chronic hepatitis B were evaluated to obtain various non-in-vasive blood parameters (aspartate aminotransferase-to-pla-telet ratio index [referred to as APRI], Fibrosis-4 score [referred to as FIB-4], gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase-to-platelet ratio [referred to as GPR], and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase-to-albumin ratio [referred to as GAR]), in ad-dition to TE, to assess significant liver fibrosis and compare these to fibrosis stage in liver biopsy. Results:A total of 113 patients were included in the study (median age 33 [inter-quartile range: 11-82 years], 74% males). Most (75%) pa-tients were HBeAg-negative. The liver biopsy revealed significant fibrosis (Ishak ≥3) in 13% of the patients and nil or mild fibrosis (Ishak<3) in 87%of the patients. TE findings were available for 85 patients, APRI and FIB-4 for 95 patients, GPR for 79 patients, and GAR for 78 patients. The median values of all the parameters were significantly higher in pa-tients with significant fibrosis, as compared to patients with non-significant fibrosis, and all the blood parameters as well as TE were able to identify patients with significant fibrosis significantly well (p<0.05). All non-invasive parameters had low positive predictive value but negative predictive value above 92%. Compared to TE, all the non-invasive blood pa-rameters had similar area under the curve for detecting sig-nificant fibrosis, with excellent negative predictive value (≥93%). Background:Diurnal changes can be defined as the time of the day over an individual's performance level for different activities that involve physical and mental ***:The current study aimed to evaluate the effect of diurnal changes in scores obtained for the Dichotic Consonant-Vowel paradigm by young adults with normal hearing ***:Based on the‘Morningness-Eveningness questionnaire’given by Horne&Ostberg,the subjects were divided into moderately-morning,intermediate and moderately-evening *** Dichotic Consonant-Vowel tests were performed during morning and evening,and the right ear,left ear and double correct scores were compared between morning and evening for each ***:There was significant diurnal changes noted for moderately morning and evening categories,where morning-type individuals performed better during morning and evening-type individuals performed better during the *** scores of intermediate individuals remained unchanged between morning and evening test ***:Diurnal change is a phenomenon associated with an individual's biological clock ***,attention and inhibitory controls aid them in carrying out tasks that require sufficient physical and mental *** current study suggests that clinicians and researchers consider diurnal changes as an extraneous variable that could affect the reliability of the Dichotic Consonant-Vowel test results.
