Mechanical Energy and Kinematics of Double Poling Technique Performed at Different Inclines by World-Level Cross-Country Skiers During World Cup Races

Purpose To analyze the inter-limb coordination patterns and energy recovery of elite cross-country skiers performing double poling(DP).Methods Thirty-three elite athletes in three track sections of FIS-WC races,with different slopes(2°,0°and−1.5°).Stereo vision capture system(50 Hz cameras)and 3D analysis were used to extract:kinematic parameters(center of gravity,veloc-ity);joint angles and angular velocities;energy(potential and kinetic)and energy recovery indices R% and R(t)during the entire DP cycle and within poling(R_(pol))and swing phase(R_(swi)).Results Average race velocity of the centre of gravity(V_(ave))significantly varied according to slopes(5.4,7.3 and 8.3 m/s).This correlated with differences in the angular velocities of the most relevant *** flexion angular velocity in the early portion of poling phase was higher according to the slope variations(−137,−171 and−202 deg/s,for the slopes 2°,0°and−1.5°,respectively),indicating the possible modulation of muscular stretch shortening cycle(SSC).A similar trend was observed for shoulder angular velocity which increased during poling phase,and for knee extension velocity during swing phase,and for knee extension velocity during swing phase.R%decreased significantly for the−1.5°slope(32%and 24%vs.15%);R(t)was higher for the *** differences were observed in trunk-elbow,trunk-shoulder,trunk-knee and elbow-shoulder patterns for the−1.5°slope with respect to the *** Despite the modest variation of the track’s slope,the effects on propulsion and recovery strategies were different.

Remote Sensing Multitemporal Data for Geomorphological Analysis of the Murghab Alluvial Fan in Turkmenistan

Archaeological studies are ever more landscape-oriented, in order to study archaeological evidences in relation with their territorial contexts. In such a framework, reconstruction and understanding of ancient landscapes assume a crucial role for archaeological research. This study proposes a first morphological analysis of the whole Murghab alluvial fan in Turkmenistan, by means of the SRTM-DEM datum, and then the reconstruction of the ancient hydrography in the northeastern fringe of the fan, based on medium-high geometric resolution satellite data, and in continuity with previous studies. The importance to know historical fluvial network is due to the strict relationship between fresh water availability and human settlement distribution. SRTM-DEM, Corona, Soyouz KFA, Landsat, and Aster data were used, overlaying them in a GIS, and digitizing palaeochannels through photo-interpretation were done. Today, this is an almost desert area of the fan, and that is why it is easier to recognize buried forms by means of photo-interpretation, even though sometimes in a doubtful way. Despite the uncertainties, this model provided a useful tool for next and focused archaeological field surveys and excavations, aimed to find out human settlement evidences in correlation with ancient waterways.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of scanning laser polarimetry (SLP) parameters provided by commercially available GDx with variable corneal compensator (VCC) to discriminate between healthy and glaucomatous eyes. Methods: Sixty-five healthy and 59 glaucomatous age-matched patients underwent a complete ophthalmological evaluation, an achromatic automated perimetry (AAP), and SLP with GDx-VCC. One randomly selected eye from each subject was considered. All glaucomatous eyes had reproducible visual field defects. Mean values (± SD) of all SLP-VCC parameters measured in the two groups were compared. Area under receiver operating characteristics (AUROC) curve and sensitivities at predetermined specificities of ≥ 80% and ≥ 95% for each single parameter were calculated. Moreover, the nerve fiber indicator (NFI) diagnostic accuracy was evaluated calculating positive, negative, and interval likelihood ratios (LRs) at different cutoff values. Results: All SLP parameters were significantly different between the two groups (p 40 were associated with large effects on posttest probability. Conclusions: SLP-VCC allows good discrimination between healthy and glaucomatous eyes. New software-provided parameters NFI, TSNIT average, and normalized superior and inferior areas appear to be reliable in the evaluation of glaucomatous disease.
