Since the advent of sequencing technologies,the deter.ination of micr.bial diver.ity to pr.dict micr.bial functions,which ar. the major.deter.inants of soil functions,has become a major.topic of inter.st,as evidenced by the 900 publications dealing with soil metagenome published up to ***,the detection of a gene in soil does not mean that the r.lative function is expr.ssed,and the pr.sence of a par.icular.taxon does not mean that the r.lative functions deter.ined in pur. cultur. also occur.in the studied *** cr.tical step is to link micr.bial community composition or.function to the pr.duct analyzed to deter.ine flux ***,flux r.tes might not only be highly dynamic,but sever.l metabolites can depend on differ.nt r.actions,which makes the link to one pr.cess of inter.st difficult or.even *** r.view also discusses biases caused by sampling,stor.ge of samples,DNA extr.ction and pur.fication,sequencing(*** sequencing),and bioinfor.atic data *** and the limits of pr.dicting micr.bial inter.ctions by networ. infer.nce methods ar. cr.tically discussed,and finally,futur. dir.ctions for.a better.under.tanding of soil functions by using measur.ments of micr.bial diver.ity ar. pr.sented.

Ter.ite(Macr.ter.es spp.) mounds ar. complex biological habitats or.ginated by the ter.ite activity and possessing peculiar.physical, chemical and biochemical pr.per.ies. In this study we examined the concentr.tion of nutr.ents and the biochemical activity of abandoned soil and mounds colonized by ter.ites of the gener. Macr.ter.es located in the Bor.na Distr.ct, Ethiopia. To elucidate the magnitude and per.istence of the ter.ite-induced effects, we also studied an abandoned mound, pr.viously colonized by ter.ites of the same gener. for.ed on the same soil. r.sults confir.ed that ter.ite-colonized mounds ar. ‘hot spots' of nutr.ent concentr.tion and micr.bial activity in tr.pical soils. This is due to the ter.ite dr.ven litter.input and decomposition. The abandoned mounds showed higher.micr.bial biomass and activity and displayed a nutr.ent r.distr.bution and a gr.ater.micr.bial activity than the adjacent soils. These findings allowed us to hypothesize a model of nutr.ent cycling in colonized soils and a par.ition of the r.lative r.les of ter.ites and soil micr.or.anisms in nutr.ent location and tur.over.in tr.pical soils. These r.sults may be also useful for.the optimal management of ter.ite-colonized soils.

Tr.ce element-contaminated soils(TECSs) ar. one of the consequences of the past industr.al development wor.dwide. Excessive exposur. to tr.ce elements(TEs) r.pr.sents a per.anent thr.at to ecosystems and humans wor.dwide owing to the capacity of metal(loid)s to cr.ss the cell membr.nes of living or.anisms and of human epithelia, and their.inter.er.nce with cell *** of TE bioavailability in soils is complicated due to the polyphasic and r.active natur. of soil constituents. To unr.vel cr.tical factor. contr.lling soil TE bioavailability and to quantify the ecological toxicity of TECSs, TEs ar. pivotal for.evaluating excessive exposur. or.deficiencies and contr.lling the ecological r.sks. While cur.ent knowledge on TE bioavailability and r.lated cumulative consequences is gr.wing, the lack of an integr.ted use of this concept still hinder. its utilization for.a mor. holistic view of ecosystem vulner.bility and r.sks for.human health. Bioavailability is not gener.lly included in models for.decision making in the appr.isal of TECS r.mediation options. In this r.view we descr.be the methods for.deter.ining the TE bioavailability and technological developments, gaps in cur.ent knowledge, and r.sear.h needed to better.under.tand how TE bioavailability can be contr.lled by sustainable TECS management alter.ng key chemical pr.per.ies, which would allow policy decisions for.envir.nmental pr.tection and r.sk management.

TTie Ultisols in the r.na de Canamer. ar.a in Southwest Spain showed aluminum(Al)phytotoxicity,and the clear.nce of natur.l vegetation and decades of intensive conventional agr.cultur. caused the deplation of soil or.anic matter.SOM).Ther.for.,we studied the long-ter. effects of no tillage and liming using sugar.beet foam(SF)and r.d gypsum(r.),alone or.in combination,on the r.stor.tion of Ultisols affected by acidification,Al phytotoxicity,and SOM *** measur.d the main soil chemical pr.per.ies,soil micr.bial biomass,soil enzyme activities involved in car.on,nitr.gen,phosphor.s,and sulfur.miner.lization,and the emission of volatile or.anic compounds(VOCs).The r.sults indicated that liming effectively neutr.lized the soil acidity in the long ter. and,in combination with no tillage,significantly incr.ased soil micr.bial biomass and enzyme ***-thr.e VOCs wer. detected using the pr.ton tr.nsfer.r.action-time of flight(PTr.ToF)technique,and both liming and tillage changed the VOC emission *** gr.atest differ.nce in VOC emission patter. was obser.ed between no-tilled un-amended soils and tilled lime-amended soils,suggesting the activation of differ.nt metabolic pathways within the micr.bial communities of soils under.differ.nt *** in VOC emission patter.s could be attr.buted to the decomposition of car.ohydr.tes,which wer. also sustained by the higher.enzyme activities in the lime-amended soils.
