The increasing demand for safe food without preservatives or pesticides residues has encouraged several studies on natural products with antifungal activity and low *** this study,ethanolic extracts from leaves and fruit residues(peel and seeds)of three Brazilian savanna species(Acrocomia aculeata,campomanesia adamantium and caryocar brasiliense)were evaluated against phytopathogenic ***,the most active extract was chemically characterized by ESI-MS and its oral acute toxicity was *** from ***(pequi)peel and leaves were active against Alternaria alternata,Alternaria solani and Venturia pirina with minimal inhibitory concentrations between 350 and 1000 lg/*** incorporated in solid media,these extracts extended the lag phase of *** and *** and reduced the growth rate of *** peel extract showed better antifungal activity and their ESI-MS analysis revealed the presence of substances widely reported as antifungal such as gallic acid,quinic acid,ellagic acid,glucogalin and *** oral acute toxicity was relatively low,being considered safe for use as a potential natural fungicide.

cachexia is a multifactorial syndrome related to unintentional weight loss and to loss of muscle and fat mass. In head and neck cancer (HNc) its incidence is important and not only related to a deficient intake of food due to the impact of the disease in the vital functions. A complex disturbance in the normal metabolism of the patient promotes a persistent inflammatory state and a shifting in the metabolism balance toward a catabolic predominance affecting primarily the skeletal muscle. This leads to severe impairment of the functional, emotional and social status and quality of life of the patients that will compromise response to treatment and the disease prognosis. Understanding this deleterious syndrome and mainly identifying it in early stages of the disease is of a major importance in achieving better outcomes to head and neck cancer patients. This study pretends to identify clinical aspects related to cachexia in HNc in a clinical perspective for application on the routine clinical practice. In our study, 30 HNc patients were enrolled and evaluated in terms of nutritional values (actual and loss of weight in the past 6 months, body mass index (BMI), nutritional risk index (NRI), malnutrition universal screening tool), serum biochemical markers (albumin, total proteins, cholesterol, triglycerides, urea, c-reactive protein (cRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and myostatin) and health related quality of life (HRQoL) evaluation (using European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of cancer (EORTc) quality of life questionnaires (QLQ): EORTc QLQ-c30 and EORTc QLQ-HN43). A minimum follow-up of 48 months was considered for all patients. Our results showed that NRI is a good and sensitive index to identify cachexia. This index uses two parameters, one constitutional (loss of weight) and one biochemical (level of serum albumin). Malnutrition in Head and neck cancer (HNc) patients can be present at the moment of diagnosis. The nutritional status is determinant for the treatment success and quality of life of the patients. The nutritional status gradually declines during treatment and the majority of patients undergoing treatment will need nutritional therapy. On the other hand, HNc, like other cancers, can induce a paraneoplastic syndrome that leads to cachexia. This cachexia status is most of the times the cause of death or the cause of treatment failure. So, early identification of malnutrition high risk patients is crucial to start an adequate nutrition support intervention in HNc patients. This study aims to identify HNc patients who present malnutrition or higher risk of malnutrition;to signalize variables that support early identification of high-risk patients of becoming malnourished and to establish a dynamic relationship between malnutrition risk in these patients and Quality of Life (QoL) impacts. For six months consecutive outpatients with HNc admitted at the Head & Neck Unity of Oncology Portuguese Institute—Porto were asked to participate in the research (n = 114). The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of cancer (EORTc) cancer-specific HRQoL questionnaire-QLQ-c30 and Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, MUST were used. At the moment of first presentation, 32 patients (28.1%) presented high-risk of malnutrition. HNc patients with oral cavity and oropharynx tumour locations, older, with low literacy or with BMI under 18.5 at the moment of diagnosis, represent a high-risk group. When HNc is considered, a dynamic and bi-directional connection between malnutrition and QoL is observed. Mixtures of cereals and legumes result in products with higher content of high biological value proteins. The thermoplastic extrusion promotes the transformation of chemical, physical and nutritional characteristics of the food such as starch gelatinization and promotes the inactivation of anti-nutritional compounds and enzymes. This study aimed to develop products extruded using broken rice and lupine and to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of those products. The expansion index (EI), water solubility (WSI), water absorption (WAI), texture and color were determined for the extruded rice, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) of the extruded rice was also performed. As the rice concentration in the mixture increased, the EI, WSI and WAI values as well as the a* color parameter were increased too, and the brightness was reduced. An increase in the levels of essential amino acids with the addition of lupine grain to the extrudates was observed. SEM analysis identified intact loose starch granules or pellets in the raw materials, and the extruded samples showed a compact and amorphous shape without apparent starch granules. Due to the structural changes and reduced expansion rate of the extruded mixture prepared with lupine and rice grits, use of the extruded mixtures as snacks would not be suitable. However, these mixtures could be used in pre-gelatinized flour to formulate various products to increase the protein level.

cathepsin D (cD), a lysosomal protease, and S100A4 protein, a calcium binding motif, are considered to be involved in metastasis in various human cancers. No data regarding such proteins are available for canine mammary carcinomas (cMcs). Accordingly, their expression in association with known factors of prognosis was investigated in this study. For that, 66 surgically resected cMcs were submitted to an immunohistochemical evaluation using anti cD, S100A4 protein, HER2, estrogen receptor α, cytokeratin 5, and p63 antibodies, further characterizing the tumors' molecular subtype. An increase in S100A4 immunoexpression by neoplastic luminal mammary cells was associated with an infiltrative tumor mode of growth, consequently leading us to conclude that S100A4 protein could be related to progression in cMcs. Additionally, the occurrence of the luminal A molecular subtype was associated with the complex histotype in cMcs. Although we have demonstrated that changes in S100A4 protein immunoexpression occurs in cMcs, further studies are needed to determine whether this represents important independent biomarkers for cMcs.

Purpose: To investigate the prognostic impacts of a combined clopidogrel-metabolizing genotypes cYP 2c19 (+ or -)*2/(+ or -)*17 on patients with acute coronary syndrome (AcS). Population and methods: Prospective, longitudinal study of 95 patients admitted for AcS to a single coronary care unit. Patients less than 75 years of age, who survived hospitalization and to whom clopidogrel was prescribed, were included. cYP2c19 genotyping was performed at dis- charge. For analysis, the patients were grouped as follows: Group A ([+]*2/[+]*17) n = 8;Group B ([+]*2/[-]*17) n = 18;Group c ([-]*2/[+]*17) n = 27;and Group D ([-]*2/[-]*17) n = 42. Platelet function was assessed by an ADP platelet aggregation test using a commercially available kit. The primary end-point was a composite of mortality or readmission for AcS. The median time of follow-up was 136.0 (79.0 - 188.0) days. Results: The mean age of the study patients was 59.9 ± 10.7 years, and 83.2% were male. The allele frequencies of cYP2c19*2 and cYP2c19 *17 were 14.2% and 20%, respectively. Both allele frequencies were in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium. The patient groups were homogenous for demographic data, cardiovascular risk factors, GRAcE and cRUSADE bleeding scores, left ventricular ejection fraction, and coronary anatomy. ADP platelet aggre-gation was similar for all groups (respective rates for groups A, B, c, D were 17.5 U (10.3 – 18.7) vs 20.0 U (17.3 – 26.8) vs 16 U (12 – 19) vs 12 U (8 – 22), p = 0.4). Event-free survival was significantly lower for group B (respective rates for Groups A, B, c, D were 87.5% vs 68.8% vs 96.3% vs 92.5%;p = 0.02). The leaf essential oils of three Myrtaceae species: Melaleuca leucadendra, Lophostemon confertus and Ugni molinae, non-native to Brazil and growing in the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden, were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by Gc and Gc-MS. Oil yields from fresh leaves were 0.76%, 0.08%, and 0.04%, respectively. Sixty-seven percent of M. leucadendra oil was made up of monoterpenes, wherein 1,8-cineole was largely predominant (49%), followed by α-terpineol (7.6%) and terpinen-4-ol (4.3%). The sesquiterpene profile was characterized by a significant amount of viridiflorol (29%). Oil from L. confertus was 42% monoterpenes;the most predominant constituents being α-pinene (20.8%) and α-thujene (7.1%). Total sesquiterpenes (55.4%) comprised spathulenol (28%), globulol (14%), and aromadendrene derivatives (8.5%) as the main species. U. Molinae oil was exclusively composed of sesquiterpenes, with a predominance of β-elemene (44%) followed by β-caryophyllene (7.1%), and bicyclogermacrene (6.7%);guaiol-type alcohols made up 30% of its profile. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time U. Molinae leaf oil composition has been described. The composition of M. leucadendra oil corresponded to a chemotype described for a species growing in cuba, but was different from that produced by M. leucadendra growing in Egypt, Tunisia, and elsewhere in Brazil. The profile of the L. confertus leaf oil showed high similarity with those described for Australian native specimens, in particular in relation to the relevant presence of α-pinene, aromadendrenes, and the guaiol-type alcohols.

This work studies the saponification which directs the wet biomass of algae chlamydomonas sp. like a previous stage to production of biodiesel. This stage allows the obtainment of fatty acids to produce biodiesel, instead of the gross lipid fraction. In addition of the fatty acids, utilizing the same process one can also obtain the fraction unsaponifiable, these are soluble in apolar solvents and contain mainly carotenoids that can take action as antioxidants and photoprotectors, as they reduce the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. The saponification direct and extraction of fatty acids from biomass is faster and reduces the time and cost of operation. The separation of unsaponifiable matter from the biomass humid of microalgae chlamydomonas sp., was held according to the method AOcS (ca 6a-40), using extraction Liquid-liquid with hexane as solvent. Subsequently, phase hydroalcoholic or from soap, containing fatty acids, was acidified by addition of H2SO4 and the fatty acids were recovered by the addition of hexane. After acidulation of the soap, necessary for obtaining of the fatty acids was performed the stage of esterification for obtaining of biodiesel. The operating conditions were: molar ratio fatty acid:methanol (1:10), as catalyst 8% H2SO4 calculated in relation to the mass of fatty acid, 200℃ and reaction time of 90 minutes. The content of methyl esters was 96.8% determined by gas chromatography according to standard EN14103. The quality of biodiesel produced from wet biomass of chlamydomonas sp. is according to the specification established by standard EN 14214 and RANP No. 14. For the identification of the composition the unsaponifiable fraction was used the method of High Performance Liquid chromatography (HPLc). The composition of the material unsaponifiable found was of: carotenoids total (0.76%);Lutein (0.45%);Zeaxanthin (0.07%);α-carotene (0.05%);β-carotene (0.11%);13 cisβ-carotene (0.05%) and 9-cisβ-carotene (0.03%).

Objective: To evaluate the profile of the Brazilianvaginal ring user, reasons for choosing it, satisfaction, menstrual pattern, tolerability, efficacy, side effects and reasons for discontinuation. Methods: We reviewed the files of 148 users who attended the Hospital de Jacarepaguáand private clinics, between 2005 and 2011, in a total of 3107 cycles. Kaplan-Meier survival curves and regression models were used in statistical analysis. Results: The profile was: single, nulligravida, 30 years (mean) and with university education. The previous contraception used was mostly the oral hormonal contraception (75.7%). Women chose the ring for: practicality (32.4%), forgetting the pill (32.4%) and irregular vaginal bleeding (13.5%). The satisfaction degree was 80.5% (119). There were good cycle control and no pregnancies. Thirty-eight patients discontinued the use (25.7%). The main reasons were wish for pregnancy (6%), spotting (3.4%) and increased vaginal discharge (2.7%). At the end of the first year, use of the greatest reduction of continuity probability was observed (19.3%). Women with side effects were 68% less likely to be satisfied with the method than those without (p-value conclusion: Nuvaring®is an excellent contraceptiveoption due to its sefficacy, cycle control, tolerability, practicality and safety.
