Antioxidative potential of a combined therapy of anti TNFα and Zn acetate in experimental colitis

AIM:To evaluate whether combination therapy with antitumour necrosis factor α (TNFα) antibody and Zn acetate is beneficial in dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) ***:Colitis was induced in CD1-Swiss mice with 5% DSS for 7 *** experimental mice were then randomised into the following subgroups:standard diet + DSS treated (induced colitis group);standard diet + DSS + subcutaneous 25 μg anti-TNFα treated group;Zn acetate treated group + DSS + subcutaneous 25 μg anti-TNFα;standard diet + DSS + subcutaneous 6.25 μg anti-TNFα treated group and Zn acetate treated group + DSS + subcutaneous 6.25 μg anti-TNFα.Each group of mice was matched with a similar group of sham control *** and histological features were scored *** of the colonic mucosa were assessed for myeloperoxidase activity as a biochemical marker of inflammation and DNA adducts (8OH-dG) as a measure of oxidative ***:DSS produced submucosal erosions,ulcers,inflammatory cell infiltration and cryptic abscesses which were reduced in both groups of mice receiving either anti-TNFα alone or combined with *** effect was more pronounced in the latter group (vs Zn diet,P < 0.02).Myeloperoxidase activity (vs controls,P < 0.02) and DNA adducts,greatly elevated in the DSS fed colitis group (vs controls,P < 0.05),were significantly reduced in the treated groups,with a more remarkable effect in the group receiving combined therapy (vs standard diet,P < 0.04).CONCLUSION:DSS induces colonic inflammation which is modulated by the administration of anti-TNFα.Combining anti-TNFα with Zn acetate offers marginal benefit in colitis severity.

NOx emissions of turbofan powered unmanned aerial vehicle for complete flight cycle

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs) have been getting more and more popular in both civil and military arena. Similar to manned aircraft, their propulsion systems or engines emit harmful gases such as nitrogen oxides. Since UAVs have different mission profiles and operational parameters than manned aircraft, it is worthy to investigate their NOx emissions. Therefore, in this study, NOx emissions of a turbofan powered UAV for complete flight cycle was calculated and optimized within a range of altitude and speed parameters. NOx emissions were calculated based on ICAO ground test data and corrected to any speed and altitude during flight legs using both Boeing Fuel Flow Method 2 and DLR Fuel Flow Method. Total NOx emissions were calculated for complete flight cycles for different altitude and speed parameters. Numerical results were presented graphically and additionally optimization studies were conducted. Optimization studies include determination and comparison of speed and altitude for minimum NOx emissions by the two fuel flow methods and maximum loiter time achievable by UAV.

New developments in the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis

Leishmaniasis,including the cutaneous form,poses an important public health threat around the world,while no vaccine is currently available against any form of *** drugs used in the first line treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis(CL)are commonly pentavalent antimonials despite their toxicities,long-term treatment duration and increasing resistance *** alternatives are amphotericin B,pentamidine,miltefosine and *** of the population,especially in endemic regions,increases the spread of the parasite and affectes the distribution of causative species,which requires re-evaluation the treatment *** researches are carried out on the treatment of *** immunotherapeutic and targeted therapeutic approaches,formulations of carrier-loaded active drugs,local thermotherapeutic applications,the combination of antileishmanial drugs/compounds,the use of new synthetic and natural products are promising therapeutic options in the ***,the author reviews the potential treatment modalities of CL with a brief overview of current treatments in the light of ongoing studies around the world.

Precipitate Formation and Evolution in the Superalloy IN738LC

IN738LC is a polycrystalline, nickel-based superalloy, which provides a high performance in aggressive environments at temperatures above 650°C. At this high temperature, the expected properties are good corrosion resistance, optimal thermal properties, and creep and fatigue resistance. These required properties are obtained via solid solution hardening and precipitation hardening of a face-centered cubic (fcc) Ni matrix phase. The size, morphology and distribution of precipitates determine the properties of the material. Thus, microstructure control is very important for effective use of IN738LC. In this study, a number of heat treatments were conducted to observe the evolution of precipitates. The formation of bimodal microstructure at 1140°C is explored. The data shows formation of a duplex size precipitate microstructure after 5 min of the aging. Formation mechanism of the duplex structure is discussed. Coarsening and dissolution mechanisms at 1120°C are discussed. Precipitates are found to grow up to a critical size in coherent and cubical morphology, beyond which dissolution sets in.

New parameter in diagnosis of acute appendicitis:Platelet distribution width

AIM:To investigate the diagnostic accuracy of the mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width in acute ***:This retrospective,case-controlled study compared 295 patients with acute appendicitis(Group?Ⅰ),100 patients with other intra-abdominal infections(GroupⅡ),and 100 healthy individuals(GroupⅢ)between January 2012 and January *** age,gender,and white blood cell count,neutrophil percentage,mean platelet volume,and platelet distribution width values from blood samples were compared among the *** analyses were performed using SPSS for Windows 21.0 *** addition,the sensitivity,specificity,positive and negative predictive values and likelihood ratios,and diagnostic accuracy were ***:The mean ages of patients were 29.9±12.0years for Group?Ⅰ,31.5±14.0 years for GroupⅡ,and30.4±13.0 years for GroupⅢ.Demographic features such as age and gender were not significantly different among the *** blood cell count,neutrophil percentage and platelet distribution width were significantly higher in Group?Ⅰ?compared to groupsⅡandⅢ(P<0.05).Diagnostically,the sensitivity,specificity and diagnostic accuracy were 73.1%,94.0%,and 78%for white blood cell count,70.0%,96.0%,and 76.0%for neutrophil percentage,29.5%,49.0%,and 34.0%for mean platelet volume,and 97.1%,93.0%,and 96.0%for platelet distribution width,*** highest diagnostic accuracy detected was for platelet distribution width between Group?Ⅰ?and GroupⅢ(P<0.01).CONCLUSION:Platelet distribution width analysis can be used for diagnosis of acute appendicitis without requiring additional tests,thus reducing the cost and loss of time.

Vulnerability to HIV Infection and Related Health Risk Behaviors of the Out of School Adolescents Migrated with Their Parents to Beijing

Objective To explore the vulnerability to HIV infection and related risk behaviors of the out-of-school adolescents who migrated with their parents from rural areas to cities. Methods From September to October 2005, 260 out-of-school adolescents aged 14-20 years were interviewed through a questionnaire. Results Out-of-school adolescents lacked HIV/AIDS knowledge and related life skills, and their psychosocial competency was relatively low. The interviewed adolescents were open in their sexuality, showing a low rate of condom use. Their attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS and HIV/AIDS prevention competency were positively correlated with family well-being, harmonious relations between their parents, a stable job, knowledge, life skill, and psychosocial competency for emotion control and empathy. Conclusion Out-of-school adolescents are highly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS infection and transmission. Practical and feasible health and life skill education and psychosocial competency are the keys to effective HIV/AIDS prevention among out-of-school adolescent migrants.

Facile biogenic selenium nanoparticle synthesis, characterization and effects on oxidative stress generated by UV in microalgae

Since nanoparticle synthesis via chemical and physical methods is expensive and includes hazardous chemicals,biosynthesis has emerged as an environmentally friendly,clean and viable *** present study reports the synthesis of selenium nanoparticles(SeNPs)using Citricoccus sp..For the production of SeNPs,the influence of some parameters(time,pH,temperature and stirring rate)was *** synthesis conditions were found as pH 8,24 h reaction time,37℃ and 150 *** particles were spherical and were 104.46±50.82 nm with a zeta potential of–20.43±0.41 ***,the effects of the nanoparticles on oxidative stress biomarkers,hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2)),malondialdehyde(MDA),chlorophyll(a+b)and growth rate,subsequent to UV-C irradiation on Chlorella vulgaris were *** culture contains nanoparticle and UV-C exposed,the amount of H_(2)O_(2) and MDA decreased on the 1st,3rd and 7th days following UV exposure compared to UV-applied group,while optical density and cell density increased,the amount of chlorophyll(a+b)changes were statistically ***,it has been shown that the synthesized SeNPs alleviated the adverse effects of UV stress in microalgae.

INTRODUCTION　　Worldwide, great advances have been made in public health protection over the last decades. Perhaps this is most cogently illustrated by the improvements in life expectancy that have been achieved in countries throughout the world. Globally　, the average life expectancy at birth from 1950 to 1955 was 46.1 years.［1］ Forty years later, this statistic increased to 64.3 years. Although this global average masks important differences between less and more developed countries, for all countries at all stages of development, substantial increases in life expectancy at birth have been realised. In Asia, the average life expectancy increased from 56.3 years to 64.5 years in the two decades between 1975 and 1995. While there remains much to be done to further improve public health and well-being of the people, the achievements are undeniable.
