Histopathological analysis of infiltrating T cell subsets in acute T cell-mediated rejection in the kidney transplant

AIM To compare the differential immune T cell subset com-position in patients with acute T cell-mediated rejection in the kidney transplant with subset composition in the absence of rejection, and to explore the association of their respective immune profiles with kidney transplant *** A pilot cross-sectional histopathological analysis of the immune infiltrate was performed using immunohistochemistry in a cohort of 14 patients with acute T cellmediated rejection in the kidney transplant and 7 kidney transplant patients with no rejection subjected to biopsy to investigate acute kidney transplant dysfunction. All patients were recruited consecutively from 2012 to 2014 at the Singapore General Hospital. Association of the immune infiltrates with kidney transplant outcomes at up to 54 mo of follow up was also explored *** In a comparison to the absence of rejection, acute T cell-mediated rejection in the kidney transplant was characterised by numerical dominance of cytotoxic T lymphocytes over Foxp3^+ regulatory T cells, but did not reach statistical significance owing to the small sample size in our pilot study. There was no obvious difference in absolute numbers of infiltrating cytotoxic T lymphocytes, Foxp3^+ regulatory T cells and Th17 cells between the two patient groups when quantified separately. Our exploratory analysis on associations of T cell subset quantifications with kidney transplant outcomes revealed that the degree of Th17 cell infiltration was significantly associated with shorter time to doubling of creatinine and shorter time to transplant *** Although this was a small pilot study, results support our suspicion that in kidney transplant patients the immune balance in acute T cell-mediated rejection is tilted towards the pro-rejection forces and prompt larger and more sophisticated studies.

Fabricating Fe3O4-schwertmannite as a Z-scheme photocatalyst with excellent photocatalysis-Fenton reaction and recyclability

Here we reported an effective method to solve the rate-limiting steps, such as the reduction of Fe^(3+) to Fe^(2+) and an invalid decomposition of H2O2 in a conventional Fenton-like reaction. A magnetic heterogeneous photocatalyst, Fe3O4-schwertmannite(Fe3O4-sch) was successfully developed by adding Fe3O4 in the formation process of schwertmannite. Fe3O4-sch shows excellent electrons transfer ability and high utilization efficiency of H2O2(98.5%). The catalytic activity of Fe3O4-sch was studied through the degradation of phenol in the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process. Phenol degradation at a wide pH(3-9) was up to 98% within 6 min under visible light illumination with the Fe3O4-sch as heterogeneous Fenton catalyst, which was higher than that using pure schwertmannite or Fe3O4. The excellent photocatalytic performance of Fe3O4-sch is ascribed to the effective recycling between ≡Fe^(3+) and ≡Fe^(2+) by the photo-generated electron, and also profit from the formation of the "Z-Scheme" system. According to the relevant data, photocatalytic mechanism of Fe3O4-sch for degrading phenol was proposed. This study not only provides an efficient way of enhancing heterogeneous Fenton reaction, but also gives potential application for iron oxyhydroxysulfate mineral.

Destruction of 4-phenolsulfonic acid in water by anodic contact glow discharge electrolysis

Destruction of 4-phenolsulfonic acid （4-PSA） in water was carded out using anodic contact glow discharge electrolysis. Accompanying the decay of 4-PSA, the amount of total organic carbon （TOC） in water correspondingly decreased, while the sulfonate group of 4- PSA was released as sulfate ion. Oxalate and formate were obtained as minor by-products. Additionally, phenol, 1,4-hydroquinone, hydroxyquinol and 1,4-benzoquinone were detected as primary intermediates in the initial stages of decomposition of 4-PSA. A reaction pathway involving successive attacks of hydroxyl and hydrogen radicals was assumed on the basis of the observed products and kinetics. It was revealed that the decay of both 4-PSA and TOC obeyed a first-order rate law. The effects of different Fe ions and initial concentrations of 4-PSA on the degradation rate were investigated. It was found that the presence of Fe ions could increase the degradation rate of 4-PSA, while initial concentrations lower than 80 mmol/L had no significant effect on kinetic behaviour. The disappearance rate of 4-PSA was significantly affected by pH.

Evaluation of soil fabric using elastic waves during load-unload

It is essential to assess the evolution of soil fabric as it has an important role in the mechanical responses of soils during complex loading *** contribution carries out the physical experiments using three granular materials in the *** variations of compression and shear wave velocities(Vp and Vs)are investigated during load-unload cycles under dry and drained *** discrete element method(DEM)simulations are performed to understand the evolution of soil fabric during the equivalent load-unload cycles using spherical *** and Vs are not always reversible even though the stress state regains its isotropic condition after unload,indicating that Vp and Vs are governed by not only the stress state but also the fabric *** variations of Vp/Vs are density-and stress-dependent;a higher level of stress ratio(s01/s03)threshold is observed for denser packings to trigger a significant change in wave velocity ratio(Vp/Vs)for experimental results using spherical glass beads and simulation data using spherical *** the particle shape,a higher s01/s03 threshold is found for more angular particles than rounded *** DEM result reveals that Vp/Vs of spherical particles can be correlated linearly with the evolution of fabric ratio(Fver/Fhor)during loadunload in a pre-peak range under dry and drained conditions.

Enhanced multiple anchoring and catalytic conversion of polysulfides by SnO_(2)-decorated MoS_(2) hollow microspheres for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

lithium-Sulfur(li-S)batteries are very competitive in energy storage equipment due to their high theoretical capacity and low cost of raw ***,the serious polysulfide"shuttle effect",volume expansion effect and slow conversion reaction kinetics of li-S batteries during the charge/discharge cycle process still need to be resolved ***,we prepared a novel sulfur host of SnO_(2)-decorated MoS_(2) hollow microspheres(SnO_(2)-MoS_(2) HMSs).The unique hollow structure provides enough space to accommodate a large amount of sulfur and effectively adapts to its large volume expansion during charge and discharge *** the other hand,the SnO_(2) nanoparticles that attached to the surface of the MoS_(2) nanosheets will accelerate the catalysis of MoS_(2) and enhance the bonding strength with the polysulfide intermediates through the S-Sn-O chemical bond,which further inhibits the shuttle *** newly synthesized SnO_(2)-MoS_(2) HMSs cathode has achieved excellent electrochemical *** initial discharge specific capacity of 1326.4 mAh g^(-1) was obtained at 0.2 C,and after 100 cycles,the specific capacity of the SnO_(2)-MoS_(2) HMSs/S cathode only decreased slightly to 1183.8 mAh g^(-1),its capacity retention rate reaching as high as 89.2%.We expect the newly synthesized hollow structured MoS_(2) with SnO_(2) decoration provides a new strategy for the construction of li-S battery cathode materials.

Numerical Analysis of Perforation during Hydraulic Fracture Initiation Based on Continuous-Discontinuous Element Method

Perforation is a pivotal technique employed to establish main flow channels within the reservoir formation at the outset of hydraulic fracturing *** perforation designs is critical for augmenting the efficacy of hydraulic fracturing and boosting oil or gas *** this study,we employ a hybrid finite-discrete element method,known as the continuous–discontinuous element method(CDEM),to simulate the initiation of post-perforation hydraulic fractures and to derive enhanced design *** model incorporates the four most prevalent perforation geometries,as delineated in an engineering technical ***-world perforations deviate from the ideal cylindrical shape,exhibiting variable cross-sectional profiles that typically manifest as an initial constriction followed by an expansion,a feature consistent across all four perforation *** simulations take into account variations in perforation hole geometries,cross-sectional diameters,and perforation *** findings show that perforations generated by the 39g DP3 HMX perforating bullet yield the lowest breakdown pressure,which inversely correlates with increases in sectional diameter and perforation ***,this study reveals the relationship between breakdown pressure and fracture degree,providing valuable insights for engineers and designers to refine perforation strategies.
