Many legume plants form beneficial associations with rhizobial bacteria that are hosted in new plant rootorgans, nodules, in which atmospheric nitrogen is fixed. This association requires the precise coordinationof two separate programs, infection in the epidermis and nodule organogenesis in the cortex. There isextensive literature indicating key roles for plant hormones during nodulation, but a detailed analysis ofthe spatial and temporal roles of plant hormones during the different stages of nodulation is *** review analyses the current literature on hormone regulation of infection and organogenesis to revealthe differential roles and interactions of auxin, cytokinin, brassinosteroids, ethylene, and gibberellins during epidermal infection and cortical nodule initiation, development, and function. With the exception ofauxin, all of these hormones suppress infection events. by contrast, there is evidence that all of these hormones promote nodule organogenesis, except ethylene, which suppresses nodule initiation. This differential role for many of the hormones between the epidermal and cortical programs is striking. Future work isrequired to fully examine hormone interactions and create a robust model that integrates this knowledgeinto our understanding of nodulation pathways.

The role of surfactant protein A(SP-A)in the recognition and clearance of apoptotic cells is well established,but to date,it is still not clear which surface molecules of apoptotic cells are involved in the *** we present evidence that phosphatidylserine(PS)is a relevant binding molecule for human *** binding is Ca^(2+)-dependent and is not inhibited by mannose,suggesting that the sugar-binding site of the carbohydrate recognition domain(CRD)of SP-A is not *** cytometry studies on apoptotic Jurkat cells revealed apparent inhibition of annexin V binding by increasing concentrations of SP-A in late apoptotic but not early apoptotic cells,and this was consistent for Jurkat cells and *** these data,confocal microscopy results show a co-localisation of annexin V and SP-A in late apoptotic but not early apoptotic ***,we cannot conclude that this inhibition is exclusively due to the binding of SP-A to PS on the cell surface,as annexin V is not wholly specific for PS and SP-A also interacts with other phospholipids that might become exposed on the apoptotic cell surface.

Surfactant proteins A(SP-A)and D(SP-D),both members of the collectin family,play a well established role in apoptotic cell recognition and *** in vitro data show that SP-A and SP-D interact with apoptotic neutrophils in a distinct ***-A and SP-D bind in a Ca^(2+)-dependent manner to viable and early apoptotic neutrophils whereas the much greater interaction with late apoptotic neutrophils is Ca^(2+)-*** surface molecules on the apoptotic target cells responsible for these interactions had not been identified and this study was done to find candidate target ***(MPO),a specific intracellular defense molecule of neutrophils that becomes exposed on the outside of the cell upon apoptosis,was identified by affinity purification,mass-spectrometry and western blotting as a novel binding molecule for SP-A and *** confirm its role in recognition,it was shown that purified immob.lised MPO binds SP-A and SP-D,and that MPO is surface-exposed on late apoptotic ***-A and SP-D inhibit binding of an anti-MPO monoclonal Ab to late apoptotic *** microscopy confirmed that anti-MPO mAb and SP-A/SP-D colocalise on late apoptotic *** was identified as a further potential ligand for SP-A,and neutrophil defensin as a target for both proteins.

We address the question that if π_1-surjective maps between closed aspherical 3-manifolds have the same rank on π_1 they must be of non-zero degree. The positive answer is proved for Seifert manifolds, which is used in constructing the first known example of minimal Haken manifold. Another motivation is to study epimorphisms of 3-manifold groups via maps of non-zero degree between 3- manifolds. Many examples are given.

Subsequent to a peripheral nerve injury, there are changes in gene expression within the dorsal root ganglia in response to the damage. This review selects factors which are well-known to be vital for inflammation, cell death and nociception, and highlights how alterations in their gene expression within the dorsal root ganglia can affect functional recovery. The majority of studies used polymerase chain reaction within animal models to analyse the dynamic changes following peripheral nerve injuries. This review aims to highlight the factors at the gene expression level that impede functional recovery and are hence are potential targets for therapeutic approaches. Where possible the experimental model, specific time-points and cellular location of expression levels are reported.

An approximate method for describing the plastic hardening-softening behaviour of circular pipes subjected to pure bending is presented. Theoretical estimation based on the uniform ovalization model and local collapse model proposed in the paper is incorporated to give several simple formulations with reasonable accuracy for determining the relationship between bending moment (M) and curvature (kappa) in the purely bended pipes. Attention is focused on the critical curvature associated with maximum resistant moment and the maximum change in the original diameter before the end of uniform ovalization stage as well as the local collapse behaviour. Some comparisons between analytical results and experimental results are made in order to examine the theory.
