Variation of a floral polymorphism at different spatial scales in the Mediterranean geophyte Narcissus assoanus

Aims Habitat fragmentation impacts the spatial extent and isolation of local populations and communities.Although the biological consequences of these impacts have been well studied at the site level,effects directly related to changes in the spatial configuration of populations in the landscape remain less clear.The objective of this study is to examine how changes in the spatial-scale configuration of populations are associated with variability in morph rations in the floral polymorphic Mediterranean geophyte Narcissus assoanus.Methods We performed a nested analysis of morph ratio variation at three spatial scales:a 50×50 km regional scale in SE France,in fourteen 1×1 km landscapes located in the same region,and within 12 spatially extensive population patches.We also quantified variation in the behaviour of pollinators in population patches of contrasting spatial configuration.Important FindingsAt a regional scale,morph ratios show a geographic pattern of increasing isoplethy(1:1 morph ratio)away from centres of human population development and in upland pastures.At the landscape scale,isoplethy of local population patches is more correlated with decreased isolation among patches than with patch size.Finally,within local isoplethic populations,small patches can show significantly biased morph ratios.In small isolated patches,pollinators perform shorter flight distances among consecutive flower visits than in spatially extensive patches.This study of variation in a genetic polymorphism at multiple spatial scales provides new insights into the scale-dependent effects of habitat fragmentation and the potential occurrence of metapopulation dynamics in natural plant populations.

Background: The use of modern contraceptive methods contributes to the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality. The initiation of a contraceptive method in the immediate postpartum period is one of the strategies to avoid missing out on contraceptive opportunities. This strategy will reduce the unmet need for contraception which is still high in the country. Objective: To describe the knowledge and attitudes of pregnant women and the practices of women who have given birth about immediate postpartum contraception. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional and descriptive study conducted at the main clinic of ATBEF from 20th March to 20th October 2020. Our study included pregnant women whose gestational age was greater than or equal to 37 weeks of amenorrhea who came for prenatal consultation or for any other consultation and then gave birth in the center. Data collection was based on a survey form. Data analysis and entry was done with the Epi info 2000 version 6.04 software. The parameters studied were: socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge and attitudes of pregnant women about contraception in the immediate postpartum period, and contraceptive practices of the women who gave birth. Resultsdana;">: during the study period, 201 women were selected for the survey. The average age of the respondents was 26.2 years. They were nulliparous in 41.3% of cases. dear Editor,The incidence of rectal cancer has increased in patients younger than 50 years old during the last decade.It is well established that young age at cancer onset is a hallmark of hereditary cancer.The prevalence of germline variants among early-onset rectal cancer(EORC)patients is largely unexplored.Here,we aimed to determine the spectrum of germline variants and their clinical impact in EORC patients diagnosed at age 40 or younger.We investigated 71 EORC patients(Supplementary Table S1),one of the largest cohorts to date,using a customized panel with 93 genes(Supplementary Table S2).

Sinus venosus defects include two varieties,superior and inferior sinus venosus defects.The superior sinus venosus defect is characterized by abnormal communication between two closely related venoatrial structures:1)the normally positioned superior vena cava-right atrium complex and 2)the right pulmonary vein-left atrium complex that is displaced leftward,forward and upward.Inferior sinus venosus defects primarily involve the inferior vena cava-right atrial junction while the right pulmonary vein-left atrial junction can also be affected.Because of the rarity and wide variation of the defects,the morphological characterization of sinus venosus defects is inconsistent among investigators and often inaccurate.Modern imaging technologies with high spatial and temporal resolutions have allowed accurate and detailed assessment of the pathological anatomy in larger numbers of cases.In this pictorial essay,we revisit the established and controversial features of the sinus venous defects using twodimensional(2d)and three-dimensional(3d)images obtained by magnetic resonance(MR)or computed tomography(CT)with brief discussion on imaging and treatment strategies.

市政污水倒虹管道在实际运行过程中极易产生淤积堵塞等问题,现有的冲洗方式已越来越无法满足城市对倒虹系统冲洗的需要,开发实用及更符合时代要求的倒虹冲洗系统己成为管网运营工作的当务之急。依托“十二五”中德水专项示范工程,通过搜集GIS等基础数据,在研究区安装新型微型拦蓄盾设备,布控水位、流速、泥深等传感器,采用正交实验设计方案,共进行了12轮冲洗实验。实验中采集了较为完整的数据,并通过分析得到了最佳倒虹自动冲洗设置参数。通过本次研究为解决倒虹管淤积问题以及管网的科学化、智能化运行管理积累了技术经验。

A novel and rapid microbiological assay for ciprofoxacin hydrochloride

The present work reports a simple, fast and sensitive microbiological assay applying the turbidimetric method for the determination of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride （CIPRO HC1） in ophthalmic solutions. The validation method yielded good results and included excellent linearity, precision, accuracy and specificity. The bioassay is based on the inhibitory effect of CIPRO HC1 upon the strain of Staphylococcus epMermidis ATCC 12228 used as the test microorganism. The results were ar, ated statistically by analysis of variance （ANOVA） and were found to be linear （r=0.9994, in the range of 14.0-56.0 lag/mL）, precise （intraday RSd %=2.06; interday RSd%=2.30） and accurate （recovery = 99.7%）. The turbidimeaic assay was compared to the UV spectrophotometric and I-IPIX2 methods for the same drug. The tuIbidimetric bioassay described on this paper for determination of ciprofioxacin hydrochloride in ophthalmic solution is an alternative to the physicochemical methods disclosed in the literature and can be used in quality control routine.

The Impact of COVId-19 on the Mental-Emotional Wellbeing of Primary Healthcare Professionals: A descriptive Correlational Study

The present study aimed to examine work environment related factors and frontline primary healthcare profes-sionals’mental-emotional wellbeing during the COVId-19 pandemic in school communities of Hong Kong.A total of 61(20%)school health nurses(frontline primary healthcare professionals)participated in a cross-sec-tional online survey from March to June 2020.Outcomes of mental-emotional health were measured using the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form(14-item scale with three subscales related to emotional,social and psychological wellbeing);the Perceived Stress Scale(10-item scale with two subscales related to perceived help-lessness and lack of self-efficacy);and the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory(Brief COPE),a 28-item inventory with two subscales related to adaptive and maladaptive strategies.Almost half(42.6%)of par-ticipants experienced mental health problems.Those employed in government subsidized schools had signifi-cantly lower scores in mental health wellbeing than those who worked in private schools.Factors relating to increased mental health problems included lack of emotional support,inadequate training relating to infection prevention and control measures,disengagement and self-blame.A variety of factors inﬂuencing school health nurses’social,emotional and psychological wellbeing in their work environment during the COVId-19 pandemic were also reported.The mental-emotional wellbeing of school nurses may relate to their subjective feeling of lone-liness as participants were the sole frontline primary healthcare professional working in the school community during the COVId-19 pandemic.Studyfindings provide relevant evidence for management teams to build a cul-ture of psychological and social support into workplace policies and procedures.Continuous staff development and adequate social support are important to promote the mental-emotional wellbeing of primary healthcare pro-fessionals in school communities as they play a significant role in safeguarding resources during pandemics

Introduction: Medical termination of pregnancy is a therapy that considerably reduces the number of obstetrical complications that can lead to maternal death and the number of births of children with diseases or malformations that are incompatible with life. Objective: To study the practice of medical termination of pregnancy at the Principal Clinic of the Togolese Association of Family Well-Being Planning Center (ATBEF). Methodology: This was a retrospective and descriptive study conducted at the Principal Clinic of the Togolese Association of Family Well-Being Planning Center (ATBEF) covering the period from May 1st, 2012 to April 30th, 2021, i.e. a period of 9 years. Physicochemical and microbiological effects of biosurfactant on the remediation of HOC-contaminated soil

Remediation of soil contaminated by hydrophobia organic compounds using biosurfactants as additives involves interactions between soil matrix, hydrophobic organic compound contaminants, biosurfactants and microorganisms. In this paper, the mechanism for biosurfactants to enhance the contaminant degradation is basically revealed. Biosurfactants can enhance solubilization of the contaminants in the soil matrix, change their mass transfer properties into the aqueous phase, as well as affect their sorption properties. Furthermore, biosurfactants can act on microorganisms and change their surface properties, accordingly cause new growth and uptake behavior of the bacteria in the soil matrix. Both the physicochemical and the microbiological effects can basically increase the bioavailability of the contaminants and enhance their degradation.
