Ontogenetic niche specialization of the spider crab Libinia ferreirae associated with the medusa Lychnorhiza lucerna

Symbiotic relationships in marine environments are not fixed and can change throughout the animal’s life.This study investigated the ontogeny of symbiosis of the spider crab Libinia ferreirae with the host medusa Lychnorhiza lucerna.We described the type of relationship,the temporal correlation among species,and food habits.More than 50%of the sampled crabs were symbionts,most in early life stages.The highest number of crabs found in a single medusa was 11.Symbiosis was observed throughout most of the year but was more evident in warm periods.The crab has many benefits in this relationship with a medusa.One is the use of food resources captured by the medusa,primarily copepods.Because the crab steals the medusa’s food,it is a kleptoparasitic relationship.There is a niche partition between symbiont and the free-living crabs as they occupy different habitats and use nonoverlapping food resources.Previous research reported that symbiosis first developed during the crab’s last larval phase(megalopa)when crab and medusa are in the same habitat.Observation of the crab’s behavior shows that symbiosis occurs when the crab can grab to the medusa when the host touches the sea bottom.The crab also took advantage of water currents,releasing itself from the substrate and then drifting toward the medusa.The symbiotic relationship that crabs have with the medusa provides then with a nursery,food resources,shelter,dispersion,and decreased competition with free-living adult crabs,all essential for the crab’s survival.

Curvature Sensor Based on a Long-Period Grating in a Fiber Ring Resonator Interrogated by an OTdR

The proposed technique demonstrates a fiber ring resonator interrogated by an optical time domain reflectometer(OTdR),for intensity sensing.By using this methodology,a cavity round trip time of 2.85ms was obtained.For a proof of concept,a long-period grating was inserted in the resonant cavity operating as a curvature sensing device.A novel signal processing approach was outlined,regarding to the logarithmic behavior of the OTdR.Through analyzing the experimental results,an increase in the measured sensitivities was obtained by increasing applied bending.With curvatures performed from 1.8 m^(-1) to 4.5 m^(-1),the sensitivity values ranged from 2.94 dB·km^(-1) to 5.15 dB·km^(-1).In its turn,the sensitivities obtained presented a linear behavior when studied as a function of the applied curvature,following a slope of 0.86×10-3 dB.The advantages of applying this technique were also discussed,demonstrating two similar fiber rings multiplexed in a series of configurations.

Comparative study of polyhydroxyalkanoates production from acidified and anaerobically treated brewery wastewater using enriched mixed microbial culture

The production of polyhydroxyalkanoates(PHA) from wastewaters using microbial mixed cultures(MMC) has been attracting increased interest because of PHA's biodegradability characteristics. Production of PHA by an MMC enriched with PHA-accumulating bacteria was compared using anaerobically treated and acidified brewery wastewaters under various feeding strategies, namely pulse and batch feed addition. To obtain an enriched MMC, a sequencing batch reactor was inoculated with activated sludge fed with acetate and subjected to aerobic dynamic feeding. The enriched MMC was able to accumulate PHA up to 72.6% of cell dry weight(CdW) with pulse addition of acetate controlled by the dissolved oxygen(dO) concentration in the reactor. In a batch accumulation experiment with acetate,the PHA content achieved(28.5% CdW) was less than that of the pulse feeding strategy with the same amount of acetate(～2000 mg C/L). Using anaerobically treated and acidified brewery wastewater fed in pulses, the maximum PHA accumulated by the enriched MMC was similar for both wastewaters(45% CdW), in spite of the higher volatile fatty acid concentration in acidified brewery wastewater. The pulse feed addition controlled by the dO concentration was difficult to implement for wastewater as compared to acetate because the difference in dO concentration between substrate availability and depletion was low. For the batch addition of acidified wastewater, a slightly lower PHA content(39%CdW) was obtained. These results show that both brewery wastewaters can be utilized for PHA production with a similar maximum PHA storage capacity.

FeedEfficiencyService: An architecture for the comparison of data from multiple studies related to dairy cattle feed efficiency indices

The increased demand for food worldwide,the reduced land availability for livestock pro-duction,the increasing cost of animal feed and the need for mitigating livestock-related greenhouse gas emissions have driven the search for animal feeding systems that proves more efficient.To tackle this problem,we propose the use of computational support to help researchers compare data on feed efficiency,therefore improving economic and environ-mental gains.As a solution,we present an integrative architecture capable of combining heterogeneous data from multiple experiments related to dairy cattle feed efficiency indices.The proposed architecture,called FeedEfficiencyService,classifies animals according to feed efficiency indices and allows visualizations through ontologies and inference engines.The results obtained from a case study with researchers from the Brazilian Agri-cultural Research Corporation–dairy Cattle(EMBRAPA)demonstrate that this architecture is a supporting tool in their daily work routine.The researchers highlighted the importance of the proposed architecture as it allows analyzing animal data,comparing experiments,having reliable data analyses,and standardizing and organizing data from experiments.The novelty of our approach is the use of ontologies and inference engines to enable the discovery of new knowledge and new relationships between data from feed efficiency-related experiments.We store such data,relationships,and analyses of results in an inte-grated repository.This solution ensures unified access to the processing history and data from diverse experiments,including those conducted at external research centers.

Hepatocellular Tumors:Immunohistochemical Analyses for Classification and Prognostication

Following the classification of hepatocellular nodules by the International Working Party in 1995 and further elaboration by the International Consensus Group for Hepatocellular Neoplasia in 2009, entities under the spectrum of hepatocellular nodules have been better characterized. Research work hence has been done to answer questions such as distinguishing high-grade dysplastic nodules from early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), delineating the tumor cell origin of HCC, identifying its prognostic markers, and subtyping hepatocellular adenomas. As a result, a copious amount of data at immunohistochemical and molecular levels has emerged. A panel of immunohistochemical markers including glypican-3, heat shock protein 70 and glutamine synthetase has been found to be of use in the diagnosis of small, well differentiated hepatocellular tumors and particularly of HCC. The use of liver fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP), β-catenin, glutamine synthetase, serum amyloid protein and C-reactive protein is found to be helpful in the subtyping of hepatocellular adenomas. The role of tissue biomarkers for prognostication in HCC and the use of biomarkers in subclassifying HCC based on tumor cell origin are also discussed.

An Investigation of the Factors Influencing Community Participation in Forest Management: A Case of Balaka district, Malawi

Forests are vital for the environment through the support which they provide to biodiversity. They also provide cultural, social and economic support to human welfare. Forest degradation is attributed to multiple land uses which include agriculture, human settlement, the use of trees as the main source of energy and other infrastructure development. The main objective of the study was to assess factors that influence community participation in forest management in Kangankundi village forest area in Balaka district, Southern Malawi. Simple random sampling was used to select 100 community members who were interviewed in the study. data were analyzed in SPSS version 22. The results showed positive significant relationship between community awareness and community participation (p = 0.015), and also between economic benefits and community involvement (p = 0.003). Involvement was not affected by income-generating activity which showed that (p = 0.781) and level of education (p = 0.535). Community awareness and economic benefits appear to be the main factors influencing community participation. Firewood and bamboos were noted to be the most resource obtained from the forest and beekeeping was also the income-generating activity in the study which is being promoted. It is concluded that community participation is influenced by many factors. The study recommends that youth must be deliberately involved in forest management as opposed to the current participation which is dominated by elderly people.

Human Rights as Placeholders

Two prevailing “traditional” notions of human rights also cause the current skeptical mood concerning human rights. Either human rights are seen in a morally exaggerated way as “trump cards” in political negotiations, or they are pruned back to a purely juridical level, absorbed into legal instances that accord them at most the rank of constitutional rights. In contrast to this, the author defends a political conception of human rights that overcomes the problems besetting both conceptions, but without having to sacrifice their critical, normative content or a realistic role for human rights in international politics. A political conception of human rights assumes, the author argues firstly, that human rights grow out of concrete experiences of injustice and are the product of political struggles. Human rights are, secondly, placeholders for the public thematization of oppression, humiliation, marginalization, and despotism. A third characteristic feature of a political conception of human rights is that human rights raise claims to a rule system that permits access to the freedoms and resources formulated by human rights. And finally, the obligations imposed by human rights are not duties of assistance but institutional duties to realize the conditions for exercising human rights. Human rights, the author concludes, can be “used” by any person to criticize existing ordering structures and can be activated for political purposes directed to the common good.

We derive averaging formulas for the Lefschetz coincidence numbers,the Nielsen coincidence numbers and the Reidemeister coincidence numbers of maps on infra-solvmanifolds modeled on a connected and simply connected solvable Lie group of type(R).As an application,we compare our formula for the Nielsen coincidence numbers with a result of Jezierski(1992)for pairs of maps on some infra-solvmanifolds of Sol.For all the pairs of self-maps of a nonorientable infra-solvmanifold of Sol,we determine the sets of all the possible values of the Nielsen coincidence numbers and the Reidemeister coincidence numbers.

Mechanical properties of a clay soil reinforced with rice husk under drained and undrained conditions

Fiber-reinforced soils have been increasingly used in geotechnical engineering.Over the years,research has sought to understand and investigate the influences of fibers as reinforcement in soilefiber mixtures.This study assessed the behavior of clayey soil in the city of Curitiba(Paraná,Brazil),adding rice husk fiber(RHF),an industrial waste from Cooperativa Agroindustrial in Alegrete(Rio Grande do Sul,Brazil).To evaluate the effect of the presence of natural RHF on the mechanical behavior of compacted soil,aspects such as the influence of fiber content and the drained and undrained behaviors of the soil were evaluated through unconfined triaxial compression tests.The following tests were realized:soil granulometry,specific mass of solids and Atterberg limits.Specimens were produced in quadruplicate for the soil and mixtures using the RHF contents of 0.5%,0.75%,1%and 1.5%to determine the unconfined compressive strength(UCS).Triaxial tests were realized on a pure soil specimen and the specimens with 1%RHF under confining pressures of 50 kPa,100 kPa,200 kPa and 400 kPa.The interactions at the interface between husk surface and soil were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy(SEM).In UCS tests,specimens with RHF percentages of 1%and 1.5%presented the highest results,with an increment of 36%compared to the soil without RHF.The results of the consolidated drained triaxial compression tests show that in terms of effective stress,there was a small difference in the strength of the compacted pure soil and soil with the addition of RHF.For the undrained tests,the strength increased with the inclusion of husk,with a reduction of 50%in cohesion and an increment of 22%in friction angle for specimens containing RHF compared to the soil without RHF additions.

Osmoporation is a novel encapsulation approach for bioactive compounds based on the osmoresistance mechanisms of microbial cells.To the best of our knowledge,this is the first study investigating the production of fisetin-enriched yoghurt using Lactobacillus acidophilus-based bio-capsules via osmoporation as the starter culture.Results showed that the milk acidification with fisetin-loaded L.acidophilus progressed at a slower pace due to complex mechanisms induced by osmopo-ration and internalized fisetin.Milk fermentation using fisetin bio-capsules reached a maximum acidification rate of 0.18 pH units/h after 23 h and pH 4.6 was achieved after 32 h.Besides,the antioxidant activity of yoghurts produced with fisetin bio-capsules did not change during cold storage,while the antioxidant activity of yoghurt produced with non-encapsulated fisetin was reduced by 2.5-fold after 28 days.Overall,this study shows that fisetin osmoporation using L.acidophilus is a versatile encapsulation bioprocess that enables the delivery of preserved phytoactives into fermented foods like yoghurt.This strategy has the potential to be extended to other applications in the dairy industry using lactic acid bacteria as both the encapsulation matrix and fermentation agent.
