Fiber-reinforced soils have been increasingly used in geotechnical *** the years,research has sought to understand and investigate the influences of fibers as reinforcement in soilefiber *** study assessed the behavior of clayey soil in the city of Curitiba(paraná,Brazil),adding rice husk fiber(RHF),an industrial waste from Cooperativa Agroindustrial in Alegrete(Rio Grande do Sul,Brazil).To evaluate the effect of the presence of natural RHF on the mechanical behavior of compacted soil,aspects such as the influence of fiber content and the drained and undrained behaviors of the soil were evaluated through unconfined triaxial compression *** following tests were realized:soil granulometry,specific mass of solids and Atterberg *** were produced in quadruplicate for the soil and mixtures using the RHF contents of 0.5%,0.75%,1%and 1.5%to determine the unconfined compressive strength(UCS).Triaxial tests were realized on a pure soil specimen and the specimens with 1%RHF under confining pressures of 50 kpa,100 kpa,200 kpa and 400 *** interactions at the interface between husk surface and soil were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy(SEM).In UCS tests,specimens with RHF percentages of 1%and 1.5%presented the highest results,with an increment of 36%compared to the soil without *** results of the consolidated drained triaxial compression tests show that in terms of effective stress,there was a small difference in the strength of the compacted pure soil and soil with the addition of *** the undrained tests,the strength increased with the inclusion of husk,with a reduction of 50%in cohesion and an increment of 22%in friction angle for specimens containing RHF compared to the soil without RHF additions.

The research conducted in public schools in Sao paulo city, Brazil, studied the awareness and use of emergency contraception (EC) and its possible implications on the condoms use. Among the 4929 students, 55.6% had already had sex, 19.5% had got pregnant and 7.3% had had abortions. Condoms were used by 88.6% and were options for those who did not have a steady relationship. The EC was used by 30.3% after a faulty condom usage, and by the older ones, with a steady partner. It is needed to be given contraceptive alternatives to reduce the risk and provide access to other contraceptives.

AIM:To assess the impact of bacterial infections on cancer-specific survival in patients with colorectal cancer. METHODS:This was a retrospective cohort study of colorectal cancer patients treated at the A.C. Camargo Cancer Center between January 2006 and April 2010. The presence of bacterial infection during cancer treatment,or up to one year after,was confirmed by laboratory tests or by the physician. Infections of the urinary,respiratory or digestive tracts,bloodstream,skin or surgical site were defined by testing within a single laboratory. Criteria for exclusion from the study were:chronically immunosuppressed patients;transplant patients(due to chronic immunosuppression);human immunodeficiency virus carriers;chronic use of corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive drugs;patients with autoimmune disease or primary immunodeficiency;known viral or parasitic infections. patients with infections that did not require hospitalization were not included in the study because of the difficulty of collecting and tracking data related to infectious processes. In addition,patients hospitalized for pulmonary thromboembolism,stroke,acute myocardial infarction,uncontrolled diabetes,malignant hypercalcemia or other serious non-infectious complications not directly related to infection were also excluded. Survival curves were plotted using the Kaplan-Meier method,and logrank tests(univariate analysis) and a Cox test assuming a proportional hazards model(multivariate analysis) were performed to examine associations between clinical history and characteristics of infection with cancer-specific survival. RESULTS:One-hundred and six patients with colorectal cancer were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of bacterial infection. patient ages ranged from 23 to 91 years,with a median of 55 years. Moving bed biofilm reactors(MBBR)are equipment used to remove organic compounds and are frequently tested for aquaculture operations aimed at treating and reusing ***,a limitation of MBBR is the long maturation period necessary for nitrification to occur *** evaluated biofilm maturation in MBBR with biomass adhered to support material using enriched medium-NH_(4)Cl and a treatment without *** independent recirculating aquaculture systems were established based on a freshwater fish farm that produced a daily total ammonia nitrogen concentration of 1.0 mg/*** treatment was composed of a reservoir and two experimental bioreactors that received support materials for the colonization of the adhered *** results indicated that the enriched bioreactors performed slower,taking 29 days to reach maturity,while the control treatment matured at 27 *** species Candidatus Nitrospira defluvii,responsible for acting in the nitrification process became more abundant in the control treatment where it represented 23%of the biofilm composition,while the enriched treatment presented only 3%.The results suggest that the nitrification process in the control treatment performed better than in the enriched ***,the use of synthetic media such as NH_(4)Cl and sodium acetate as sources of C:N associated with the pimelodus maculatus effluent during the start-up process had an important benefit to the maturation time of both bioreactors.

Effect of Na Fe EDTA-Fortified Soy Sauce on Anemia prevalence in China: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Objective To assess the effect of sodium iron ethylenediaminetetraacetate （NaFeEDTA）-fortified soy sauce on anemia prevalence in the Chinese population. Methods A systematic review was performed to identify potential studies by searching the electronic databases of pubMed, Cochrane Library, WHO Library, HighWire, CNKI, and other sources. The selection criteria included randomized controlled trials that compared the efficacy of NaFeEDTA-fortified soy sauce with that of non-fortified soy sauce. Anemia rates and hemoglobin levels were the outcomes of interest. Inclusion decisions, quality assessment, and data extraction were performed by two reviewers independently. A total of 16 studies met the inclusion criteria for anemia rate analysis, of which 12 studies met the inclusion criteria for hemoglobin analysis. All included studies assessed the effect of NaFeEDTA-fortified soy sauce on anemia rates and hemoglobin concentrations. Results After the intervention, the hemoglobin concentration increased and anemia rates decreased significantly as compared with the non-fortified soy sauce groups. For anemia rates, data from 16 studies could be pooled, and the pooled estimate odds ratio was 0.25 （95% CI 0.19-0.35）. For hemoglobin concentrations, data from 12 studies could be pooled, and the pooled weighted mean difference was 8.81 g/L （95% CI 5.96-11.67）. Conclusion NaFeEDTA-fortified soy sauce has a positive effect on anemia control and prevention in the at-risk population.

Malnutrition has been reported as a major factor contributing to the poor outcome of effective ART in HIV infection. This study aimed to describe the relationship between the nutritional status and virological outcome of the children attending the antiretroviral clinic at University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, Nigeria. Among the 159 (55.3% males and 44.7% females) children studied, almost half (42.8%) were orphans and the majority 56.6% were aged 120 - 180 months old. More than half (74.2%) had achieved viral suppression and significant associations were observed between viral load and stunting as well as between CD4 count and the age of the children (P 0.05). The prevalence of stunting, wasting, and underweight was 27.7%, 9.4%, and 13.6% respectively. These indices reinforce the need for nutrition education and the provision of food supplements to improve the nutritional status of children infected with HIV.

AIM:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of cetuxim-ab plus irinotecan in irinotecan-refractory metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients from South-East Asia and Australia. METHODS:In this open-label,phase Ⅱ study,the main eligibility criteria were epidermal growth factor receptor-positive mCRC with progressive disease within 3 mo of an irinotecan-based regimen as the most recent chemotherapy. patients received cetuximab 400 mg/m2 initially,then 250 mg/m2 every week,with the same regimen of irinotecan on which the patients had progressed (4 pre-defined regim-ens allowed). The prim-ary objective was evaluation of progression-free survival (pFS) at 12 wk. Secondary objectives included a further investigation of pFS,and an assessment of the overall response rate (ORR),duration of response,time to treatment failure (TTF),overall survival and the safety profile. RESULTS:One hundred and twenty nine patients were enrolled from-25 centers in the Asia-pacific region and of these 123 received cetuximab plus irinotecan. The most common recent irinotecan regimen used was 180 mg/m2 every 2 wk which had been used in 93 patients (75.6%). The pFS rate at 12 wk was 50% (95% confidence interval (CI,41-59) and m-edian pFS tim-e was 12.1 wk (95% CI:9.7-17.7). The ORR was 13.8% (95% CI:8.3-21.2) and disease control rate was 49.6% (95% CI:40.5-58.8). Median duration of response was 31.1 wk (95% CI:18.0-42.6) and median overall survival was 9.5 mo (95% CI,7.5-11.7). The median TTF was 11.7 wk (95% CI:9.1-17.4). Treatment was generally well tolerated. The most common grade 3/4 adverse events were diarrhea (13.8%),neutropenia (8.9%),rash (5.7%) and vomiting (5.7%).CONCLUSION:In patients from Asia and Australia,this study confirm-s the activity and safety of cetuxim-ab plus irinotecan observed in previous studies in Europe and South America.
