This study investigates the biofilm formation, presence and distribution of virulence genes and the capacity to induce an inflammatory response in strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from milk samples in Bahia, Brazil. A total of 132 samples of raw milk were collected from four dairy farms (designated A to D) located in southwestern Bahia, in the municipality of Vitória da Conquista, from October/2009 to September/2010. After processing of the samples, 94 (71.2%) S. aureus isolates were obtained. These strains were subjected to the antibiogram method MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration). As for the pathogenicity, tests were performedin vitrobiofilm formation induced by glucose. Moreover, we performed PCR for their virulence genes: sea (enterotoxin A), seb (B), sec (C), pvl (Panton-Valentine Leukocidin), clfA (Clumping Factor A) and spa (protein A) and analysis of cytokine induction in the inflammatory response of J774 macrophages by exocellular lipoteichoic acid. No isolates were resistant to oxacillin and vancomycin. In biofilm production, 5.31% (5/94) isolates did not produce biofilm, 5.31% (5/94) of the samples were poor producers, 15.96% (15/94) strains were moderate producers, 18.09% (17/94) were producers and 55.32% (55/94) of isolates were strong biofilm producers. One (1.06%) isolate expressed the seb gene, one (1.06%) sec, 18 (19.2%) cflA and 44 (46.8%) had spa. There was no expression of sea and pvl between isolates analyzed. The analysis of cytokine induction in the inflammatory response did not show statistical difference in the levels of IL-6, TNF-α and IL-10 induction. However, there was statistical difference in IL-1 induction between isolates from different farms. A theoretical study of hydride bonds formed between beryllium hydride and alkaline earth metal cations is presented. B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) calculations were used for determining the optimized geometries of the BeH2...K+, BeH2...Ca+2, BeH2...K+...BeH2, and BeH2...Ca+2...BeH2 hydride-bonded complexes, where among them the first are binaries, whereas the last ones are ternaries with the calcium (Ca+2) and potassium (K+) ions mediating the interactions with the beryllium hydride (BeH2). A detailed structural analysis were performed, by which the yielded profiles are in good agreement with results of the infrared vibrational spectrum, mainly in regards to the existence of red-shifted modes followed by enlarged absorption intensity ratios of the B-H bonds of the binary complexes. The capability of either donating or accepting of protons among BeH2, K+, and Ca+2, is currently treated in conformity with Lewis’s acid/base theory, but is also interpreted through the application of the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM), whose formalism consents in the molecular modeling of concentrations and depletions of charge density ruled by the Laplacian shapes, charge transference fluxes, as well as by the local virial theorem of the electronic density with quantification of the kinetic and potential energies along the bonds and interactions.

Sea ice is an important and complex component of the Earth’s system, acting as both an indicator and an amplifier of climate change. Here, we investigated the ability of the Brazilian Earth System Model (BESM-OA2.5) and four state-of-the-art climate models participating in the fifth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, Version 5 (CMIP5) to represent the Antarctic Sea Ice Concentration (SIC) seasonal cycle. We validated the sea ice model’s performance using satellite data from 1980 to 2005 and calculated the skill and RMSE of each model. BESM-OA2.5 results for melt-freeze transitions in the Southern Ocean are consistent with CMIP5 models and satellite data. In February, when the sea ice reaches its annual minimum, the BESM-OA2.5 has the best fit among the models. However, in September, when the Antarctic sea ice reaches its annual maximum, the SIC simulated by BESM-OA2.5 indicated the largest area covered by ice compared to satellite, particularly on the Polar Front. Similar results were found in the CMIP5 models evaluated here. We suggest that the large bias simulated in the Polar Front is related to the inability of the sea ice model to represent the complex ocean-atmosphere-sea ice interactions. The subject is considered a hot topic in climate change studies and lacks conclusive answers.

Understanding layer interplay is the key to utilizing layered heterostructures formed by the stacking of different two-dimensional materials for device applications. Boron nitride has been demonstrated to be an ideal substrate on which to build graphene devices with improved mobilities. Here we present studies on the morphology and optical response of annealed few-layer hexagonal boron nitride flakes deposited on a silicon substrate that reveal the formation of linear wrinkles along well-defined crystallographic directions. The wrinkles formed a network of primarily threefold and occasionally fourfold origami-type junctions throughout the sample, and all threefold junctions and wrinkles formed along the armchair crystallographic direction. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations yielded, through spontaneous symmetry breaking, wrinkle junction morphologies that are consistent with both the experimental results and the proposed origami-folding model. Our findings indicate that this morphology may be a general feature of several two-dimensional materials under proper stress-strain conditions, resulting in direct consequences in device strain engineering.

The production of mushrooms enriched with essential elements, e.g. selenium, for human health is an interesting strategy to improve the functional foods supply. The selenium is an essential mineral and makes part of structure of enzymes involved in the oxidative metabolism. However, the selenium effect on the activity of respiratory and lignocellulolytic enzymes has not been considered. The understanding of this effect is important to determine the selenium concentration that increases the mushroom productivity and the degradation rate of the substrate. In this study, it was observed reduction of the respiratory activity of Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler, the shiitake mushroom, in function of the increasing of the sodium selenite concentration in the substrate (p < 0.05). Selenium did not inhibit the activity of the hydrolytic enzymes (cellulase and xylanase), but it increased the activity of the oxidative enzyme (laccase). Respiratory activity of L. edodes has a negative correlation with sodium selenite concentration added in substrate. Thus is important to define the ideal dose of selenium to be added to the substrate for increasing lignocellulosic residues degradation and, consequently, guarantee a higher production of Se-enriched mushrooms.

Both Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) and Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) have a wide range of strategies that include different economic instruments for nature conservation. Although the generation and maintenance of payment for hydrologic ecosystem services (Water-PES) is expanding in Brazil, there are difficulties in the implementation of projects. Due to the complexity and non-linearity of the hydrological processes, also affecting both EbA and Water-PES goals, monitoring quali-quantitative aspects of streams have been here addressed as a useful management tool. This study presents the Hydrological Monitoring Plan (HMP) of the Water Producer/PCJ project, operating between 2009-2014, in order to: 1) evaluate the impact of project actions under water quali-quantitative aspects;and 2) promote the incorporation of HMP’s elements in water resources management. HMP of the Water Producer/PCJ project has been implemented following the conditions for efficiency (baseline, long-term scale compatible with the actions of the project, in the experimental and reference watersheds). In addition, HMP is being implemented from upstream to downstream in catchments with areas ranging from 17 to 130 km2. This proposal favors the quantification and valuation of hydrologic services that could be assessed by ecohydrologic monitoring and modeling. Thus, we look forward to the consolidation of the Brazilian information system of water resources, the reduction of modeling uncertainties and integrated assessment of the consequences of land-use/land-cover change that strongly impact goals of EbA and Water-PES initiatives.

玉米赤霉烯酮(ZEN)和脱氧雪腐烯醇(DON)是饲料中尤其是以玉米和甜菜渣(beet pulp)为原料的饲料中最常见的两种真菌毒素。众所周知,高ZEN或DON毒素含量水平的日粮最终会使毒素进入到母猪的乳汁中,对母猪和新生仔猪均造成不利的影响。ZEN及衍生物是一类主要由镰刀菌属的真菌产生的非甾体雌激素类真菌毒素,广泛存在于玉米、大麦、小麦和高粱等谷物饲料及其副产品中,能引起猪等家畜和家禽早熟,生殖周期紊乱。DON(又名呕吐毒素)是一种单端孢霉烯族毒素,主要是由禾谷镰刀菌和粉红镰刀菌产生的一种剧毒次级代谢产物。谷类作物粮食发生霉变后产生DON,猪对DON最为敏感,且危害也最大,主要毒性效应为拒食、呕吐、抵抗力下降和繁殖性能下降,结果不仅影响猪的生长性能,同时还严重危害猪的免疫功能和繁殖能力,给养殖业造成巨大的经济损失。全球主要饲料生产大国和地区都制定了关于真菌毒素的限量标准。如果日粮中毒素的含量水平不是那么高(低于欧盟标准),对母猪和新生仔猪是否就没有影响或者影响可以忽略呢?荷兰斯科特霍斯特饲料研究中心真菌毒素研究员雷吉安·圣徒博士(Dr regiane Santos)在最新一期《All About Feed》(2021,29(1):14-16)介绍了这方面最新的研究情况。试验中研究了母猪妊娠期和哺乳期ZEN、DON毒素及其衍生物传递给仔猪的情况,测定了母猪初乳和常乳中以及母猪和仔猪血清中真菌毒素的含量水平,并评估了真菌毒素(ZEN和DON)对母猪及所产猪的影响,最终得出以下结论。1)即使繁殖母猪的日粮中毒素含量水平较低(不超过欧盟标准),毒素仍旧可以从日粮中传入到母乳中(初乳和常乳),进而再由母乳传递给仔猪。2)虽然饲喂真菌毒素含量水平低的日粮并不影响母猪的生产性能以及仔猪的生长性能,但是确实会给母猪及其所产仔猪产生一定的影响。3)进食ZEN毒素含量水平较低日粮的母猪背膘厚度减少、血清中瘦素含量水平降低。4)真菌毒素使得雌性仔猪的繁殖性能受到影响使其不能被列入繁殖计划。

The thyroid hormones(THs), triiodothyronine(T3) and thyroxine(T4), are essential for survival; they are involved in the processes of development, growth, and metabolism. In addition to hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, THs are involved in other diseases. The role of THs in the development and differentiation of mammary epithelium is well established; however, their specific role in the pathogenesis of breast cancer(BC) is controversial. Steroid hormones affect many human cancers and the abnormal responsiveness of the mammary epithelial cells to estradiol(E2) in particular is known to be an important cause for the development and progression of BC. The proliferative effect of T3 has been demonstrated in various types of cancer. In BC cell lines, T3 may foster the conditions for tumor proliferation and increase the effect of cell proliferation by E2; thus, T3 may play a role in the developmentand progression of BC. Studies show that T3 has effects similar to E2 in BC cell lines. Despite controversy regarding the relationship between thyroid disturbances and the incidence of BC, studies show that thyroid status may influence the development of tumor, proliferation and metastasis.
