Does Zika Really Have the Capacity to Affect the Nervous System and Cause Microcephaly or Intracranial Calcifications?

Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that brain abnormalities in infants with laboratory-confirmed Zika infection include microcephaly, disrupted brain growth, intracranial calcifications, and abnormal eye findings—it is not known presently if the Zika virus itself causes any of these. In a recent 2016 review of Zika dealing with possible brain abnormalities appearing with Zika, Melo et al. mention that among the Flaviviruses, which Zika is, such brain insults and pathologic findings are practically unheard of. Melo et al. conclude that until more cases are diagnosed and more histopathological proofs are obtained, the possibility of other causes besides Zika cannot be ruled out. This paper considers just such other possible causes that have, to this point, escaped general notice. The Aedes aegypti and other Aedes species can transmit tiny viral-like, cell-wall-deficient mycobacterial forms, independent of viruses, yet prevalent in the very same Rhesus Monkey used in the original 1952 Zika communication—which spoke of “A filterable transmissible agent”. In addition, the universal fetal prenatal vaccination of Brazilian neonates is considered, strongly discouraged by The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, which forbids BCG vaccination of pregnant women and those immunosuppressed or already having tuberculosis (TB) or AIDS. And finally thought is focused on the prime candidate itself, towards explaining what an alternative cause for “Zika” might look like—an infectious agent with transmissible, filterable, viral-like forms. One which can be transmitted by the very same Aedes mosquitoes that carry Zika—one that is neurotrophic, and extremely prevalent in Brazil—and that can disrupt brain growth, cause microcephalus, cause a fever, is sexually transmissible, instigates Guillain-Barré syndrome and causes cranial calcifications—the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, which includes the Mycobacterium africanum prevalent, yet completely

Fibonacci and Lucas Congruences and Their Applications

In this paper we obtain some new identities containing Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. These identities allow us to give some congruences concerning Fibonacci and Lucas numbers such as L2mn＋k ≡（-1）（m＋1）nLk（modLm）, F2mn＋k ≡（-1）（m＋1）nFk （modLm）, L2mn＋k ≡ （-1）mn Lk（mod Fm） and F2mn＋k≡ （-1）mn Fk （mod Fm）. By the achieved identities, divisibility properties of Fibonacci and Lueas numbers are given. Then it is proved that there is no Lucas number Ln such that Ln = L2ktLmx2 for m 〉 1 and k≥1. Moreover it is proved that Ln = LmLr is impossible if m and r are positive integers greater than 1. Also, a conjecture concerning with the subject is given.

Estimation of peak runoff and frequency in an ungauged stream of a forested watershed for flood hazard mapping

Kaynasli District in the western Black Sea region of Turkey has long been vulnerable to frequent flood damage due to the establishment of settlements within and around stream channels without regard to fluctuating peakstreamflow frequencies. The aim of this research was to determine the measures needed to protect the towns and villages from this type of damage. Daily total precipitation data for 1975–2010 were analysed, and rainfall-runoff models developed to estimate the potential yearly maximum discharge from each stream of sub-watersheds dominated by forests and/or agriculture. This was then calculated for different frequencies of the yearly maximum discharge. Flood analysis and mapping was modified via the one-dimensional Hydrologic Engineering CentersRiver Analysis System software to produce potential maximum discharge and geometric data for Kaynasli Creek. As the main creek of the sub-watershed, its crosssection was shown to be insufficient and incapable of containing the maximum discharge at the 100-year frequency presumed for the watershed, and subsequently was seen as having a high level of casualty risk. It was concluded that the one dimensional model could be useful, but 2D models were more suitable for these types of watersheds.

Temperature and Thickness Effects on Electrical Properties of InP Films Deposited by Spray Pyrolysis

InP film samples are prepared by spray pyrolysis technique using aqueous solutions of InCl3 and Na2HPO4, which are atomized with compressed air as carrier gas onto glass substrates at 500° C with different thicknesses of the films. The structural properties of the samples are determined by x-ray diffraction （XRD）. It is found that the crystal structure of the InP films is polycrystalline hexagonal. The orientations of all the obtained films are along the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate. The electrical measurements of the samples are obtained by dc four-probe technique on rectangular-shape samples. The effects of temperature on the electrical properties of the InP films are studied in detail.

Internal Validity Index for Fuzzy Clustering Based on Relative Uncertainty

Unsupervised clustering and clustering validity are used as essential instruments of data *** clustering being realized under uncertainty,validity indices do not deliver any quantitative evaluation of the uncertainties in the suggested ***,validity measures may be biased towards the underlying clustering ***,neglecting a confidence requirement may result in *** the absence of an error estimate or a confidence parameter,probable clustering errors are forwarded to the later stages of the ***,having an uncertainty margin of the projected labeling can be very fruitful for many applications such as machine ***,the validity issue was approached through estimation of the uncertainty and a novel low complexity index proposed for fuzzy *** involves only uni-dimensional membership weights,regardless of the data dimension,stipulates no specific distribution,and is independent of the underlying similarity *** tests and comparisons returned that it can reliably estimate the optimum number of partitions under different data distributions,besides behaving more robust to over ***,in the comparative correlation analysis between true clustering error rates and some known internal validity indices,the suggested index exhibited the highest strong *** relationship has been also proven stable through additional statistical acceptance *** the provided relative uncertainty measure can be used as a probable error estimate in the clustering as ***,it is the only method known that can exclusively identify data points in dubiety and is adjustable according to the required confidence level.

Surface Modification of Nanoclays with Styrene-Maleic Anhydride Copolymers

This study presents the modification of surfaces of nanoclays, halloysite nanotubes (HNT) and sepiolite (SEP), with styrene-maleic anhydride copolymers (SMA) via esterification reaction between hydroxyl groups of the nanoclays and anhydride groups of SMA. The structural, thermal, and morphological analyses of the modified nanoclays were performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). All of these results suggested that the expected modification of HNT and SEP surfaces were performed. Although XRD patterns of HNT containing samples showed that the basal spacing shifted to higher distances, it was found that those of the crystalline structure of SEP remained unchanged. Thermal gravimetric analysis exhibited that SMA copolymers were grafted onto the surfaces of nanoclays varying amounts between 15 and 43 wt. % depending on the types of nanoclays and SMA copolymers. This modification indicates that these nanoclays can be added to the polystyrene matrix without any compatibilizers.

Ultrastructural changes in hepatocytes after taurinetreatment in CCl_4 induced liver injury

AIM: To search the organelle based changes in hepatocytes after taurine treatment in experimental liver fi brosis induced by CCl_4 administration. METHODS: Thirty rats were divided into two groups. Group 1 (n = 15) was injected with CCl_4 plus taurine and Group 2 (n = 15) with CCl_4 plus saline for 12 wk. At the end of 12th wk, mitochondria, rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, and nuclei of hepatocytes were evaluated using a scoring system. The results were compared with histopathological f indings, as well. RESULTS: Taurine treatment reduced fi brosis scores signifi cantly as compared to placebo. Organelle injury scores decreased signifi cantly with taurine treatment. Ultrastructural and histopathological scores in both groups were in strong correlation (r = 0.931 for CCl_4 plus taurine and r = 0.899 for CCl_4 plus saline group). CONCLUSION: Organelle based transmission electron microscopy fi ndings can reflect successfully histological results as well as tissue healing in hepatocytes from hepatotoxin-induced liver fi brosis.

Ursodeoxycholic acid treatment improves hepatocyte ultrastructure in rat liver fibrosis

AIM: To examine the ultrastructural changes after ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) treatment in hepatocytes from experimentally induced fibrotic ***: Liver fibrosis was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats with CCl4 for 12 wk, and the rats were divided into two groups. Group I was treated with saline and group Ⅱ with UDCA (25 mg/kg per day) for 4 wk. All the rats were killed at wk 16. Mitochondria, nuclei, rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) of hepatocytes were evaluated according to a scoring ***: Mitochondria, nuclei, RER and SER injury scores in group Ⅱ were significantly lower than those in groupⅠ(P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: UDCA alleviates hepatocyte organelle injury in CCl4-induced liver fibrosis.
