How competitive is the‘pioneer-climax’tree species Nothofagus alpina in pristine temperate forests of Chile?

Aims Nothofagus species are constitutive elements of the temperate forests along the Southern Andes Mountains.The deciduous Nothofagus alpina is a fast-growing,but long-lived opportunistic pioneer spe-cies(‘pioneer-climax species’)and co-occurs with the evergreen N.dombeyi.We tested whether N.alpina is competitively superior to N.dombeyi in mature stands and whether intra-specific competition in N.alpina is stronger than inter-specific competition with N.dombeyi.Methods In a pristine old-growth forest in South-Central Chile,we compared the growth of N.alpina trees in pure stands and in mixture with N.dombeyi to the growth of N.dombeyi and calculated compe-tition indices.We related growth variables to climate data and weather extremes.Important Findings In N.alpina,juvenile basal area increment was signifi-cantly higher in pure than in mixed stands.Contrary to our hypothesis,N.dombeyi exhibited larger radial stem increments than N.alpina in the most recent 40 years.In the most recent two decades,this was caused by high growth rates of large N.dombeyi trees.In both Nothofagus species,stem growth was negatively related to temperature,but N.dombeyi responded more sensitively to weather conditions than N.alpina.In N.alpina,stem increment was negatively related to the intensity of competition,but the size of the competition effects on this species was similar in pure and mixed stands.Thus,compared to N.alpina,the‘pioneer-climax species’concept is even more appropriate for N.dombeyi with its relatively high growth rates even in the early stages of its life.

The mirror’s curse: Weight perceptions mediate the link between physical activity and life satisfaction among 727,865 teens in 44 countries

Purpose:The present study aimed to examine the link between physical activity(PA)and life satisfaction in a large international study of adolescents.We also aimed to test whether overweight and underweight perceptions act as mediators and whether age and sex acted as moderators.Methods:For this purpose,we analyzed data from the Health behavior in School-aged Children study,which comprises 727,865 observations from 44 nations at 4 measurement occasions.Results:Multilevel analyses revealed a positive link between PA and life satisfaction.In addition,underweight and overweight perceptions mediated the effect of PA on life satisfaction.We further found that age and sex acted as moderators.In older adolescents,stronger effects were found in the links between PA and life satisfaction,PA and overweight perception,and both weight perceptions and life satisfaction.In addition,in female adolescents,the link between overweight perception and life satisfaction was stronger.Conversely,the links between PA and both weight perceptions were stronger for boys.Conclusion:The results suggest that weight perception explains part of the relationship between PA and life satisfaction in adolescents and that these effects vary as a function of age and sex.

Disentangling the role of management, vegetation structure, and plant quality for Orthoptera in lowland meadows

Seminatural grasslands provide habitats for various species and are important for biodiversity conservation. The understanding of the diverse responses of species and traits to different grassland managenient methods is therefore urgently needed. We disentangled the role of grassland management (fertilization and irrigation), vegetation structure (biomass, sward height) and plant quality (protein and fiber content) for Orthoptera communities in lowland hay meadows in Germany. We found vegetation structure to be the most important environmental category in explaining community structure of Orthoptera (species richness, total individuals, fiinctional diversity and species composition). Intensively used meadows (fertilized, irrigated, high plant biomass) were characterized by assemblages with few species, low functional diversity, and low conservation value. Thereby, the relatively moderate fertilizer inputs in our study system of up to -75 kg N/ha/year reduced functional diversity of Orthoptera, while this negative effect of fertilization was not detectable when solely considering taxonomic aspects. We found strong support for a prominent role of plant quality in shaping Orthoptera communities and especially the trait composition. Our findings demonstrate the usefulness of considering both taxonomic and functional comp on ents (functio nal diversity) in biodiversity research and we suggest a stronger involvement of plant quality measures in Orthoptera studies.

First experience in laparoscopic surgery in low and middle income countries: A systematic review

bACKGROUND Laparoscopic surgery has reduced morbidity and mortality rates,shorter post-operative recovery periods and lower complication rates than open surgery.It is routine practice in high-income countries and is becoming increasingly common in countries with limited resources.However,introducing laparoscopic surgery in low-and-middle-income countries(LMIC)can be expensive and requires resour-ces,equipment,and trainers.AIM To report the challenges and benefits of introducing laparoscopic surgery in LMIC as well as to identify solutions to these challenges for countries with limited finances and resources.METHODS MEDLINE,EMbASE and Cochrane databases were searched for studies reporting first experience in laparoscopic surgery in LMIC.Included studies were published between 1996 and 2022 with full text available in English.Exclusion criteria were studies considering only open surgery,ear,nose,and throat,endoscopy,arthro-scopy,hysteroscopy,cystoscopy,transplant,or bariatric surgery.RESULTS Ten studies out of 3409 screened papers,from eight LMIC were eligible for inclusion in the final analysis,totaling 2497 patients.Most reported challenges were related to costs of equipment and training programmes,equipment pro-blems such as faulty equipment,and access to surgical kits.Training-related challenges were reliance on foreign trainers and lack of locally trained surgeons and theatre staff.The benefits of introducing laparoscopic surgery were economic and clinical,including a reduction in hospital stay,complications,and morbidi-ty/mortality.The introduction of laparoscopic surgery also provided training opportunities for junior doctors.CONCLUSION Despite financial and technical challenges,many studies emphasise the overall benefit of introducing laparoscopic surgery in LMICs such as reduced hospital stay and the related lower cost for patients.While many of the clinical centres in LMICs have proposed practical solutions to the challenges reported,more support is critically required,in particular regarding training.

草地是欧洲范围内生物物种最为丰富的动植物栖息地之一;为了对大面积的草地开展有效的保护,必须要采取具有针对性和可持续性的管理措施。虽然如今大都已被弃用,但传统上的灌溉却有可能是一种具有可持续性的管理策略。然而,对于一般的湿润性生态区域,人们还不太了解灌溉、土壤特性以及植物物种这3者之间的相互影响。我们旨在将传统的草地灌溉对植物群落的影响从传统的低施肥量效应中分离出来,从而获得植物生态学方面的新知识。我们的考察对象是植物的组成和多样性以及它们与土壤特性(有机态碳、总氮、持水性/保水力、中型土壤动物活力)和土壤养分(无机态氮、磷、钾、镁、硼)指标之间的潜在联系。在田间研究中,我们对过去长期灌溉的13块草地以及未经灌溉的13块草地(其中17块草地经过施肥,9块未经施肥)进行了比较。分析这些草地在一整年时间内的植物多样性和物种组成情况以及土壤养分和土壤特性指标,并且假设不同年份之间的差异不大。研究结果发现,灌溉和施肥使土壤特性和土壤养分发生了改变,但它们对植物物种多样性并无影响,只影响植物的物种组成。淤积土具有更细的粒度,因而拥有更高的保水力和养分储量。因此,需要获取水分和养分资源的禾本科植物在经过灌溉的草地上占据优势。本研究的结果表明,对于中欧地区大量的已开发草地,灌溉不仅能保护其生物多样性,而且还有可能使其植物具有不同的植物功能性状。

Comparison of short- with long-term regeneration results after digital nerve reconstruction with musclein-vein conduits

Muscle-in-vein conduits are used alternatively to nerve grafts for bridging nerve defects. The purpose of this study was to examine short- and long-term regeneration results after digital nerve reconstruction with muscle-in-vein conduits. Static and moving two-point discriminations and Semmes-Weinstein Monofilaments were used to evaluate sensory recovery 6–12 months and 14–35 months after repair of digital nerves with muscle-in-vein in 7 cases. both follow-ups were performed after clinical signs of progressing regeneration disappeared. In 4 of 7 cases, a further recovery of both two-point discriminations and in another case of only the static two-point discrimination of 1–3 mm could be found between the short-term and long-term follow-up examination. Moreover, a late recovery of both two-point discriminations was demonstrated in another case. Four of 7 cases showed a sensory improvement by one Semmes-Weinstein Monofilaments. This pilot study suggests that sensory recovery still takes place even when clinical signs of progressing regeneration disappear.

High prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis in a desert population: results from an exploratory study around the Ounianga lakes in Chad

background Researching a water-borne disease in the middle of the Sahara desert might not seem the most relevant concern.However,nomadic Sahelian pastoralists health concerns regarding their livestock and anecdotal reports about trematode infections of Fasciola spp.and Schistosoma spp.in desert-raised animals justified an exploratory study focusing on the lakes of Ounianga in Northern Chad.The aim was to test whether trematode parasites such as Schistosoma spp.occur in human populations living around the Sahara desert lakes of Ounianga Kebir and Ounianga Serir in northern Chad.Methods The study was carried out in January 2019 and comprised of three components.First,a cross sectional survey based on a random sample drawn from the population to detect infections with S.haematobium and S.mansoni;second,focus group discussions exploring disease priorities,access to health and health seeking behaviour;and third,surveying water contact sites for intermediate host snails.Samples of trematode parasites and snails were confirmed on species level by molecular genetic methods.For parasitological and malacological surveys descriptive statistics were performed.Qualitative data analysis included the full review of all transcripts,followed by a descriptive and explorative thematic analysis.Results Among 258 participants,the overall S.haematobium prevalence using urine filtration was 39.2%[95%confidence interval(CI):33.5–45.1%],with 51.5%of the infected suffering from heavy infection.The intermediate host snail of S.haematobium(bulinus truncatus)occurred at water contact sites near both study villages,revealing the potential for local transmission.Although a positive S.mansoni point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen(POC-CCA)test result was obtained from 8.6%(95%CI 5.7–12.8%)of the samples,no intermediate host snails of S.mansoni were found,and the relevance of S.mansoni remains uncertain.Qualitative findings underline the importance of morbidity caused by urinary schistosomiasis,and the lack of access to diagnostics and treat

background:Complementary and alternative medicine(CAM)is applied both to children and adults widely throughout the world.A previous pan-European survey showed a surprisingly high CAM-use in Turkish children.This review aimed to survey information on the use of CAM in pediatrics in Turkey.Data sources:A narrative,non-systematic review was conducted by melding expert opinions with a thorough and balanced review of available evidence.An unrestricted literature search using the key words,"alternative","complementary","integrative","prevalence"and"pediatric"or"children"and"Turkey"was performed by internet search in March,2012 using PubMed and Google Scholar.Results:CAM use was examined in general pediatrics,pediatric oncology,patients with asthma,and patients with diabetes.A frequency of CAM use was 87%in Turkish pediatric patients,with a mean of 60%.The primary sources of information about CAM are family and friends.Communication with patients/parents and health care professionals showed that most parents do not speak about CAM use with their physicians or nurses.Conclusions:CAM is extensively used in Turkish pediatric patients.This might be due to Turkey's status as a developing country in which a traditional medical system still dominates in comparison to developed countries.Thus,larger studies are required to prove an extensive use of CAM in Turkey,as this review article does not have the capacity for in-depth analysis.Knowledge about CAM and its related topics is essential for physicians and nurses in order to meet the patients'wish for a competent consultation concerning all aspects of a possible therapy.
