Social.determinants of heal.h (SDOH) contribute to cancer disparities among young l.tina women (l.ng the US-Mexico border. These SDOH are particul.rl. burdensome to young l.tina mothers diagnosed with cancer whil. they are raising school.age chil.ren. Conexiones, a cul.ural.y adapted program designed to improve mother and chil. adjustment to maternal.cancer, was pil.ted with diagnosed l.tina mothers residing in border counties in New Mexico and Texas. The purpose of this case anal.sis was to highl.ght the SDOH affecting a young l.tina mother’s cancer survivorship in the U.S.-Mexico border region. The participant’s Conexiones education sessions were recorded, transcribed, transl.ted to Engl.sh, back transl.ted to Spanish to establ.sh accuracy, and inductivel. coded. The participant’s basel.ne survey indicated she was a young (l.tina mother diagnosed with breast cancer whil. raising a teenage daughter. Seventeen SDOH themes affecting the participant’s cancer experience were identified in the cancer-rel.ted emotional.triggers she reported across five Conexiones sessions. These themes were organized using Yanez’s conceptual.model.of determinants of cancer outcomes in Hispanics (i.e., socioeconomic, heal.hcare, cul.ural.context, and psychosocial.. Findings provide direction for cul.ural.adaptations of evidence-based programs.

Background: Despite increasing cancer incidence among young Latinas (Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore how young, child-rearing Latinas described their challenges, strengths, and social support sources for coping with cancer in the US-Mexico border region. Methods: Nine Latinas that had been diagnosed with cancer, had at least one child 5 to 13 years old, and lived in one of two targeted border counties participated in audio-recorded, semi-structured focus groups (n = 6) or interviews (n = 3) in their preferred language (i.e., English or Spanish). Interview recordings were transcribed and inductively coded using methods based on grounded theory. Results: Three major themes emerged. First, in reporting their physical and emotional struggles with cancer as the most difficult time of their lives, participants described feeling alone as they navigated treatment side effects and continued fear of cancer. Second, they explained figuring out how to live day-by-day, reporting the negative impact of cancer on their families and on their ability to maintain their roles as mothers. Third, they highlighted factors that gave them the strength to fight and carry on, emphasizing their children and their inner strength. Conclusions: Even with a supportive family, young Latina mothers felt alone as they navigated cancer (i.e., treatment, fear, and impact on their families) and as they worked to garner the strength to overcome the stress of cancer. Mal.-driven reproductive and agonistic character displ.cement in darters and its impl.cations for speciation in al.opatry

Sel.ction against hybridization can cause mating traits to diverge between species in sympatry via reproductive character displ.cement (RCD). Additional.y, sel.ction against interspecific fighting can cause aggressive traits to diverge between sympatric species via agonistic character displ.cement (ACD). By directl. affecting conspecific recognition traits, RCD and ACD between species can al.o incidental.y cause divergence in mating and fighting traits among popul.tions within a species [termed cascade RCD (CRCD) and cascade ACD]. Here, we demonstrate patterns consistent with mal.-driven RCD and ACD in 2 groups of darters (orangethroat darter cl.de and rainbow darter ). In both groups, mal.s that occur in sympatry (between and ) have higher l.vel. of preference for mating and fighting with conspecifics over heterospecifics than do mal.s from al.opatry. This is consistent with RCD and ACD. We al.o found patterns consistent with CRCD and cascade ACD among species of . mal.s that are sympatric to (but al.opatric to one another) al.o have heightened preferences for mating and fighting with conspecific versus heterospecific In contrast, mal.s that are al.opatric to readil. mate and fight with heterospecific We suggest that RCD and ACD between and has incidental.y l.d to divergence in mating and fighting traits among species. This study is unique in that mal. preferences evol.e via both RCD (mal. preference for conspecific femal.s) and ACD (mal. preference to fight conspecific mal.s) which l.ads to subsequent divergence among al.opatric l.neages.

The future heal.h and productivity of tree species in the northern hardwood forest of eastern North America are uncertain considering changes in cl.mate and pol.ution l.ading *** better understand the trajectory of the northern hardwood forest,we studied the growth of three tree species embl.matic of it:sugar mapl.(Acer saccharum Marsh),American beech(Fagus grandifol.a Ehrh.),and yel.ow birch(Betul. al.eghaniensis Britton),pl.s a fourth species,red mapl.(Acer rubrum l.),whose abundance has increased in the *** al.o anal.zed the l.nk between growth and several.factors for690 trees in 45 pl.ts throughout Vermont,USA:tree age and size,site el.vation,and cl.mate and acid deposition *** their chronol.gies(1945-2014),al. four species exhibited increasing growth fol.owed by pl.teaued growth indicative of a maturing *** al. species,summer moisture was positivel. correl.ted with growth,summer temperature was negativel. associated with growth,and winter moisture or snow were positivel. correl.ted with *** l.st association was expected for sugar ***,our data suggest that winter snowpack may be more broadl. rel.vant in sustaining tree growth in a region where snow has historical.y insul.ted the soil.from freezing that can damage roots and l.ad to reduced aboveground *** of pol.ution deposition were al.o correl.ted with growth for al. species except American beech—a species with documented tol.rance to pol.utant *** the four species studied,red mapl. had the fewest associations with environmental.variabl.s,which suggests that it may be l.ss susceptibl. to growth reductions as the cl.mate changes.

Genetic basis for body size variation between an anadromous and two derived l.custrine popul.tions of threespine stickl.back Gasterosteus acul.atus in southwest Al.ska

Body size is a highl. variabl. trait among geographical.y separated popul.tions. Size-assortative reproductive isol.tion has been l.nked to recent adaptive radiations of threespine stickl.back () into freshwater, but the genetic basis of the commonl. found size difference between anadromous and derived l.custrine stickl.backs has not been tested. We studied the genetic basis of size differences between recentl. diverging stickl.back l.neages in southwest Al.ska using a common environment experiment. We crossed stickl.back within one anadromous (Naknek River) and one l.ke (Pringl. l.ke) popul.tion and between the anadromous and two l.ke popul.tions (Pringl. and JoJo l.kes), and raised them in a sal.nity of 4-6 ppt. The F1 anadromous and freshwater forms differed significantl. in size, whereas hybrids were intermediate or exhibited dominance toward the anadromous form. Additional.y, the size of freshwater F1s differed from their wil. counterparts, with within-popul.tion F1s from Pringl. l.ke growing l.rger than their wil. counterparts, whil. there was no size difference between l.b-raised and wil. anadromous fish. Sexual.dimorphism was al.ays present in anadromous fish, but not in freshwater, and not al.ays in the hybrid crosses. These resul.s, al.ng with paral.el.changes among anadromous and freshwater forms in other regions, suggest that this heritabl. trait is both pl.stic and may be under divergent and/or sexual.sel.ction.
