AIM:To investigate the association of macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF)promoter polymorphisms with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)***:One thousand and six New Zealand Caucasian cases and 540 Caucasian controls were genotyped for the MIF SNP-173G>C(rs755622)and the repeat polymorphism CATT5-8(rs5844572)using a predesigned TaqMan SNP assay and capillary electrophoresis,*** were analysed for single site and haplotype association with IBD risk and ***-analysis was employed,to assess cumulative evidence of association of MIF-173G>C with *** published genotype data for MIF-173G>C in IBD were identified using PubMed and subsequently searching the references of all PubMed-identified *** genotypes for MIF-173G>C were generated from the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium(and National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases).Separate meta-analyses were performed on Caucasian Crohn’s disease(CD)(3863 patients,6031controls),Caucasian ulcerative colitis(UC)(1260 patients,1987 controls),and East Asian UC(416 patients and 789 controls)datasets using the Mantel-Haenszel *** New Zealand dataset had 93%power,and the meta-analyses had 100%power to detect an effect size of OR=1.40 atα=0.05,***:In our New Zealand dataset,single-site analysis found no evidence of association of MIF polymorphisms with overall risk of CD,UC,and IBD or disease phenotype(all P values>0.05).Haplotype analysis found the CATT5/-173C haplotype occurred at a higher frequency in New Zealand controls compared to IBD patients(0.6 vs 0.01;P=0.03,OR=0.22;95%CI:0.05-0.99),but this association did not survive bonferroni ***-analysis of our New Zealand MIF-173G>C data with data from seven additional Caucasian datasets using a random effects model found no association of MIF polymorphisms with CD,UC,or overall ***,meta-analysis of all published MIF-173G>C data from East Asian datasets(416UC patients

AIM： TO assess whether polymorphisms in NOD2 and ATG16l1 affect cytokine responses and mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis （MAP） survival in monocytes from Crohn＇s disease （CD） patients METHODS： Monocytes were isolated from peripheral blood of CD patients of known genotype for common single nucleotide polymorphisms of NOD2 and ATG16l1, Monocytes were challenged with MAP and bacterial per- sistence assessed at subsequent time-points. Cytokine responses were assayed using a Milliplex multi-analyte profiling assay for 13 cytokines. RESUlTS： Monooltes heterozygous for a NOD2 polymorphism （R702W, P268S, or 1007fs） were more permissive for growth of MAP （P = 0.045） than those without. There was no effect of NOD2 genotype on subsequent cytokine expression. The T300A polymorphism of ATG16l1 did not affect growth of MAP in our model （P = 0.175）, but did increase expression of cytokines interleukin （Il）-10 （P = 0.047） and Il-6 （P = 0.019）. CONClUSION： CD-associated polymorphisms affected the eliminaUon of MAP from ex v/vo monooltes （NOD2）, or expression of certain oltokines （ATG16lI）, implying independent but contributory roles in the pathogenesis of CD.

Selection against hybridization can cause mating traits to diverge between species in sympatry via reproductive character displacement （RCD）. Additionally, selection against interspecific fighting can cause aggressive traits to diverge between sympatric species via agonistic character displacement （ACD）. By directly affecting conspecific recognition traits, RCD and ACD between species can also incidentally cause divergence in mating and fighting traits among populations within a species [termed cascade RCD （CRCD） and cascade ACD]. Here, we demonstrate patterns consistent with male-driven RCD and ACD in 2 groups of darters （orangethroat darter clade Ceasia and rainbow darter Etheostoma caeruleum）. In both groups, males that occur in sympatry （between Ceasia and E. caeruleum） have higher levels of preference for mating and fighting with conspecifics over heterospecifics than do males from allopatry. This is consistent with RCD and ACD. We also found patterns consistent with CRCD and cascade ACD among species of Ceasia. Ceasia males that are sympatric to E. caeruleum （but allopatric to one another） also have heightened preferences for mat- ing and fighting with conspecific versus heterospecific Ceasia. In contrast, Ceasia males that are allopatric to E. caeruleum readily mate and fight with heterospecific Ceasia. We suggest that RCD and ACD between Ceasia and E. caeruleum has incidentally led to divergence in mating and fighting traits among Ceasia species. This study is unique in that male preferences evolve via both RCD （male preference for conspecific females） and ACD （male preference to fight conspecific males） which leads to subsequent divergence among allopatric lineages.

Background:lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United *** rules regarding permitted contact differ by sex and *** are no known studies using a nationally representative data set to analyze lacrosse injury patterns over several years by sex and age in the youth ***:A retrospective analysis was performed using data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System for youth aged 11-18 years who were treated for lacrosse-related injuries in *** departments from 2000 to *** on our review of the case narratives,we created and coded a new injury-mechanism *** generated national estimates from 6406 ***:An estimated 206,274 lacrosse-related injuries to youths aged 11-18 years were treated in *** departments from 2000 to *** rate of injuries per 10,000 significantly increased from 1.9 in 2000 to a peak of 5.3 in 2012(pllowed by a significant decrease to 3.4 in 2016(p=0.020).Injury mechanism,body part injured,and diagnosis differed by *** were 1.62 times(95%confidence interval(95%CI):1.25-2.09)more likely than girls to be injured by player-to-player *** were 2.21 times(95%CI:1.96-2.49)more likely than boys to have non-contact ***,as age increased,the percentage of injuries from lacrosse sticks decreased and player-toplayer contact ***:Despite additional protective regulations in the sport,lacrosse is an important source of injury where we continue to see differences by sex and *** study supports the continuation,modification,and addition of rules aimed at reducing lacrosse injury risk.

Introduction:As challenges to biodiversity mount,land-use policies have been implemented to balance human needs and the integrity of ecological *** such program,Payments for Ecosystem Services(PES),incentivizes resource users to protect ecosystem services and has been implemented around the world to reduce soil erosion,create or improve wildlife habitats,and improve water quality and other environmental *** PES policy,at its core,is a concept that aims to capture the reciprocal relationships between human systems and ecological function and *** such,PES epistemologically embodies a coupled human and natural systems ***:Yet,despite this conceptual alignment,the on-the-ground implementation or evaluation of PES typically does not adopt this coupled approach and PES programs have little integration between socioeconomic,sociocultural,human demographic,and ecological *** advance the evolution of PES,we consider what and how socioeconomic and ecological factors have been incorporated into PES program implementation and *** also present a conceptual model to articulate how PES research can capture the reciprocal relationships among socioeconomics,demography,and ecology and discuss the quantitative modeling approaches that can support this conceptual development,i.e.,structural equation and agent-based modeling,and latent trajectory ***:By strengthening the conceptual framework for PES within a coupled human and natural systems approach and identifyinganalytical approaches that can be used to quantify and characterize these complex cross-disciplinary relationships,we aim to support the evolution and advancement of PES,in service of more meaningful and positive outcomes for human well-being and ecological sustainability.

Trichomoniasis is the most common, sexually transmitted infection. It is caused by the flagellated protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Symptoms include vaginitis and infections have been associated with preterm delivery, low birth weight and increased infant mortality, as well as predisposing to HIV/AIDS and cervical cancer. Trichomoniasis has the highest prevalence and incidence of any sexually transmitted infection. The 5-nitroimidazole drugs, of which metronidazole is the most prescribed, are the only approved, effective drugs to treat trichomoniasis. Resistance against metronidazole is frequently reported and cross resistance among the family of 5-nitroimidazole drugs is common, leaving no alternative for treatment, with some cases remaining unresolved. The mechanism of metronidazole resistance in T. vaginalis from treatment failures is not well understood, unlike resistance which is developed in the laboratory under increasing metronidazole pressure. Anal intraepithelial neoplasia(AIN) is a premalignant lesion of the anal mucosa that is a precursor to anal cancer. Although anal cancer is relatively uncommon, rates of this malignancy are steadily rising in the United States, and among certain high risk populations the incidence of anal cancer may exceed that of colon cancer. Risk factors for AIN and anal cancer consist of clinical factors and behaviors that are associated with the acquisition and persistence of human papilloma virus(HPV) infection. The strongest HPV-associated risk factors are HIV infection, receptive anal intercourse, and high risk sexual behavior. A history of HPVmediated genital cancer, which suggests infection with an oncogenic HPV strain, is another risk factor for AIN/anal cancer. Because progression of AIN to anal cancer is known to occur in some individuals over several years, screening for AIN and early anal cancer, as well as treatment of advanced AIN lesions, is reasonable in certain high-risk populations. Although randomized controlled trials evaluating screening and treatment outcomes are lacking, experts support routine screening for AIN in high risk populations. Screening is performed using anal cytological exams, similar to those performed in cervical cancer screening programs, along with direct tissue evaluation and biopsy via high resolution anoscopy. AIN can be treated using topical therapies such as imiquimod, 5-flurouracil, and trichloroacetic acid, as well as ablative therapies such as electrocautery and laser therapy. Reductions in AIN and anal cancer rates have been shown in studies where high-risk populations were vaccinated against the oncogenic strains of HPV. Currently, the CDC recommends both high-risk and average-risk populations be vaccinated against HPV infection using the quadrivalent or nonavalent vaccines. It is important for clinicians to be familiar with AIN and the role of HPV vaccination, particularly in high risk populations.

Increased Benthic Algal Primary Production in Response to the Invasive Zebra Mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) in a Productive Ecosystem,Oneida lake,New York

Increased water clarity associated with zebra mussel （Dreissena polymorpha） populations may favor benthic algal primary production in freshwater systems previously dominated by pelagic phytoplankton production. While zebra mussel-mediated water clarity effects on benthic primary production have been implicated in published reports, few production estimates are available. This study estimates benthic primary production in Oneida lake, NY before and after zebra mussel invasion （1992）, using measured photosynthetic parameters （P^Bmax, α^β and β） from sampled benthic algal communities. In the summers of 2003 and 2004, primary production was measured as O2 evolution from algal communities on hard （cobble） and soft （sediment） substrate from several depths. We also backcast estimates of benthic primary production from measurements of light penetration since 1975. Estimates of whole-lake epipelic and epilithic algal primary production showed a significant （4%） increase and exhibited significantly less interannual variability subsequent to the establishment of zebra mussels. We applied our model to two lakes of differing trophic status; the model significantly overestimated benthic primary production in a hypereutrophic lake, but there was no significant difference between the actual and predicted primary production values in the oligotrophic lake. The hypereutrophic lake had higher zebra mussel densities than Oneida （224 vs. 41 per sample respectively）. Though total community respiration （measured in total darkness） was factored into our model predictions of production, our model may need modification when heterotrophic respiration is a large portion of total community metabolism.
