Participants in mixed-species bird flocks(MSFs)have been shown to associate with species that are similar in body size,diet,and evolutionary history,suggesting that facilitation structures these assemblages.In addition,several studies have suggested that species in MsFs resemble each other in their plumage,but this question has not been systematically investigated for any MsF system.During the nonbreeding season of 2020 and 2021,we sampled 585 MSFs on 14 transects in 2 habitats of Tongbiguang Nature Reserve in western Yunnan Province,China.We performed social network analysis and the Multiple Regression Quadratic Assignment Procedure to evaluate the effect of 4 species traits(body size,overall plumage color,distinctive plumage patterns,and diet)and evolutionary history on species association strength at the whole-MSF and within-MSF levels.All 41 significant relationships showed that species with stronger associations were more similar in their various traits.Body size had the strongest effect on association strength,followed by phylogeny,plumage patterns,and plumage color;diet had the weakest effect.Our results are consistent with the hypotheses that the benefits of associating with phenotypically similar species outweigh the potential costs of interspecific competition,and that trait matching can occur in plumage characteristics,albeit more weakly than in other traits.Several explanations exist as to why similarities in plumage may occur in MSFs,including that they could reduce predators'ability to target phenotypically"odd"individuals.Whether trait matching in plumage occurs through assortative processes in ecological time or is influenced by co-evolution requires furtherstudy.

Web-Based Spatial Decision Support System andWatershed Management with a Case Study

In order to maintain a proper balance between development pressure and water resources protection, and also to improve public participation, efficient tools and techniques for soil and water conservation projects are needed. This paper describes the development and application of a web-based watershed management spatial decision support system, WebWMPI. The WebWMPI uses the Watershed Management Priority Indices (WMPI) approach which is a prioritizing method for watershed management planning and it integrates land use/cover, hydrological data, soils, slope, roads, and other spatial data. The land is divided into three categories: Conservation Priority Index (CPI) land, Restoration Priority Index (RPI) land, and Stormwater Management Priority Index (SMPI) land. Within each category, spatial factors are rated based on their influence on water resources and critical areas can be identified for soil conservation, water quality protection and improvement. The WebWMPI has user-friendly client side graphical interfaces which enable the public to interactively run the server side Geographic Information System to evaluate different scenarios for watershed planning and management. The system was applied for Dry Run Creek watershed (Cedar Falls, Iowa, US) as a demonstration and it can be easily used in other watersheds to prioritize crucial areas and to increase public participation for soil and water conservation projects.

Impaired cellulose decomposition in a headwater stream receiving subsurface agricultural drainage

Background:Agricultural development of former wetlands has resulted in many headwater streams being sourced by subsurface agricultural drainage systems.Subsurface drainage inputs can significantly influence stream environmental conditions,such as temperature,hydrology,and water chemistry,that drive ecological function.However,ecological assessments of subsurface drainage impacts are rare.We assessed the impact of an agricultural drainage system on cellulose decomposition and benthic respiration using a paired stream study in a headwater branch of Nissouri Creek,in Ontario,Canada.Adjacent first order segments sourced by a spring-fed marsh and a cropped field with subsurface drainage,as well as the adjoining trunk segment,were sampled over a year using the cotton strip assay to measure cellulose decomposition and benthic respiration.Results:Assessments of cellulose decomposition revealed a one-third reduction in the drainage-sourced segment compared to marsh-sourced segment.Between segment differences in cellulose decomposition were associated with reduced summer temperatures in the drainage-sourced segment.Impacts of stream cooling from the drainage-sourced segment were transmitted downstream as cellulose decomposition was slower than expected throughout the drainage-sourced segment and for several hundred meters down the adjoining trunk segment.Benthic respiration only differed between the drainage-and marsh-sourced segments in spring,when stream temperatures were similar.Conclusions:Our findings suggest there may be a widespread reduction in cellulose decomposition in streams across similar agricultural regions where subsurface drainage is prevalent.However,cooling of streams receiving significant amounts of water inputs from subsurface drainage systems may impart increased resiliency to future climate warming.

Change Point Detection for Process Data Analytics Applied to a Multiphase Flow Facility

Change point detection becomes increasingly important because it can support data analysis by providing labels to the data in an unsupervised manner.In the context of process data analytics,change points in the time series of process variables may have an important indication about the process operation.For example,in a batch process,the change points can correspond to the operations and phases defined by the batch recipe.Hence identifying change points can assist labelling the time series data.Various unsupervised algorithms have been developed for change point detection,including the optimisation approachwhich minimises a cost functionwith certain penalties to search for the change points.The Bayesian approach is another,which uses Bayesian statistics to calculate the posterior probability of a specific sample being a change point.The paper investigates how the two approaches for change point detection can be applied to process data analytics.In addition,a new type of cost function using Tikhonov regularisation is proposed for the optimisation approach to reduce irrelevant change points caused by randomness in the data.The novelty lies in using regularisation-based cost functions to handle ill-posed problems of noisy data.The results demonstrate that change point detection is useful for process data analytics because change points can produce data segments corresponding to different operating modes or varying conditions,which will be useful for other machine learning tasks.

CONSPECTUS:Nanocomposite materials can achieve desirable characteristics otherwise unavailable to single component systems,making them attractive platforms to precisely modulate a material’s mechanical,electromagnetic,thermal,and optical properties.Because these properties are often dependent on the organization of constituent materials just as much as their relative composition,intentionally programming composite properties requires hierarchical structural control across many length scales.However,the fundamental forces governing the atomic,molecular,nanoscale,microscale,and macroscale composition and structure of a material are all interlinked,and thus must be manipulated simultaneously to properly create ideal designer materials.

Growth trends and environmental drivers of major tree species of the northern hardwood forest of eastern North America

The future health and productivity of tree species in the northern hardwood forest of eastern North America are uncertain considering changes in climate and pollution loading there.To better understand the trajectory of the northern hardwood forest,we studied the growth of three tree species emblematic of it:sugar maple(Acer saccharum Marsh),American beech(Fagus grandifolia Ehrh.),and yellow birch(Betula alleghaniensis Britton),plus a fourth species,red maple(Acer rubrum l.),whose abundance has increased in the region.We also analyzed the link between growth and several factors for690 trees in 45 plots throughout Vermont,USA:tree age and size,site elevation,and climate and acid deposition variables.Throughout their chronologies(1945-2014),all four species exhibited increasing growth followed by plateaued growth indicative of a maturing forest.For all species,summer moisture was positively correlated with growth,summer temperature was negatively associated with growth,and winter moisture or snow were positively correlated with growth.This last association was expected for sugar maple.However,our data suggest that winter snowpack may be more broadly relevant in sustaining tree growth in a region where snow has historically insulated the soil from freezing that can damage roots and lead to reduced aboveground growth.Measures of pollution deposition were also correlated with growth for all species except American beech—a species with documented tolerance to pollutant inputs.Of the four species studied,red maple had the fewest associations with environmental variables,which suggests that it may be less susceptible to growth reductions as the climate changes.

Male-driven reproductive and agonistic character displacement in darters and its implications for speciation in allopatry

Selection against hybridization can cause mating traits to diverge between species in sympatry via reproductive character displacement (RCD). Additionally, selection against interspecific fighting can cause aggressive traits to diverge between sympatric species via agonistic character displacement (ACD). By directly affecting conspecific recognition traits, RCD and ACD between species can also incidentally cause divergence in mating and fighting traits among populations within a species [termed cascade RCD (CRCD) and cascade ACD]. Here, we demonstrate patterns consistent with male-driven RCD and ACD in 2 groups of darters (orangethroat darter clade and rainbow darter ). In both groups, males that occur in sympatry (between and ) have higher levels of preference for mating and fighting with conspecifics over heterospecifics than do males from allopatry. This is consistent with RCD and ACD. We also found patterns consistent with CRCD and cascade ACD among species of . males that are sympatric to (but allopatric to one another) also have heightened preferences for mating and fighting with conspecific versus heterospecific In contrast, males that are allopatric to readily mate and fight with heterospecific We suggest that RCD and ACD between and has incidentally led to divergence in mating and fighting traits among species. This study is unique in that male preferences evolve via both RCD (male preference for conspecific females) and ACD (male preference to fight conspecific males) which leads to subsequent divergence among allopatric lineages.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) contribute to cancer disparities among young latina women (long the US-Mexico border. These SDOH are particularly burdensome to young latina mothers diagnosed with cancer while they are raising school-age children. Conexiones, a culturally adapted program designed to improve mother and child adjustment to maternal cancer, was piloted with diagnosed latina mothers residing in border counties in New Mexico and Texas. The purpose of this case analysis was to highlight the SDOH affecting a young latina mother’s cancer survivorship in the U.S.-Mexico border region. The participant’s Conexiones education sessions were recorded, transcribed, translated to English, back translated to Spanish to establish accuracy, and inductively coded. The participant’s baseline survey indicated she was a young (latina mother diagnosed with breast cancer while raising a teenage daughter. Seventeen SDOH themes affecting the participant’s cancer experience were identified in the cancer-related emotional triggers she reported across five Conexiones sessions. These themes were organized using Yanez’s conceptual model of determinants of cancer outcomes in Hispanics (i.e., socioeconomic, healthcare, cultural context, and psychosocial). Findings provide direction for cultural adaptations of evidence-based programs.

In the last two decades, it has become clear that yo T cells recognize a diverse array of antigens including self and foreign, large and small, and peptidic and non-peptidic molecules. In this respect, 78 antigens as a whole resemble more the antigens recognized by antibodies than those recognized by T cells. Because of this antigenic diversity, no single mechanism--such as the major histocompatibility complex （MHC） restriction of ap T cells--is likely to provide a basis for all observed T-cell antigen receptor （TCR）-dependent 78 T-cell responses. Furthermore, available evidence suggests that many individual 78 T cells are poly-specific, probably using different modes of ligand recognition in their responses to unrelated antigens. While posing a unique challenge in the maintenance of self-tolerance, this broad reactivity pattern might enable multiple overlapping uses of 78 T-cell populations, and thus generate a more efficient immune response.

The idea of using ultrashort X-ray pulses to obtain images of single proteins frozen in time has fascinated and inspired many.It was one of the arguments for building X-ray free-electron lasers.According to theory,the extremely intense pulses provide sufficient signal to dispense with using crystals as an amplifier,and the ultrashort pulse duration permits capturing the diffraction data before the sample inevitably explodes.This was first demonstrated on biological samples a decade ago on the giant mimivirus.Since then,a large collaboration has been pushing the limit of the smallest sample that can be imaged.The ability to capture snapshots on the timescale of atomic vibrations,while keeping the sample at room temperature,may allow probing the entire conformational phase space of macromolecules.Here we show the first observation of an X-ray diffraction pattern from a single protein,that of Escherichia coli GroEl which at 14 nm in diameter is the smallest biological sample ever imaged by X-rays,and demonstrate that the concept of diffraction before destruction extends to single proteins.From the pattern,it is possible to determine the approximate orientation of the protein.Our experiment demonstrates the feasibility of ultrafast imaging of single proteins,opening the way to single-molecule time-resolved studies on the femtosecond timescale.
