A Web-Based Cardiovascular Risk Assessment via Pharmacists: A Feasibility and Validation Study

Background: Involving pharmacists in clinical care could improve the identification of subjects at risk for cardiovascular (CV) disease. Data on web-based approach involving pharmacists for CV disease risk assessment are very limited. Methods: We first developed a web-based CV risk assessment tool to be used by pharmacists that includes demographic, lifestyle, biological and anthropometric information. Biological and anthropometric data were collected in independent laboratories. We then assessed the feasibility and validity of this approach by inviting adults who previously (within 6 months) participated in a Swiss standardized population-based study to fill out the web-based platform. Attrition rates and correlations were used to assess the feasibility and validity, respectively. Proportions were expressed as percentages and continuous variables were expressed as means ± standard deviations (SD). Main Outcomes Measure: Proportions of participants who 1) agreed to participate;2) filled out the questionnaire and had their biological and anthropometric measures taken;3) only filled out the questionnaire;and 4) only had their biological and anthropometric measures taken. Correlations were used to compare continuous variables (body mass index [BMI], waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, total plasma cholesterol, HDL plasma cholesterol, LDL plasma cholesterol, triglycerides) collected via both studies. Results: Overall, 218 (53.2% women) adults of the population-based study were eligible and were contacted to participate, from April to November 2013. Of these, 140 (64.2%) agreed to participate. The majority (67/140, 47.8%) both filled out the questionnaire and had their biological/anthropometric measures taken, whereas only 2.8% and 7.1% only filled out the questionnaire or only had their biological measures taken, respectively. Study of Potassium Silicate Spraying in Coffee Plants to Control <i>Oligonychus ilicis</i>(McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae)

The southern red mite, Oligonychus ilicis (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae) can cause a significant reduction in the photosynthesis potential and the growth of new coffee plants (Coffea spp., Rubiaceae). Studies suggest that the leaf spraying of silicon (Si) leads to increase plants resistance in order to reduce infestations of insect pests such as herbivores, borers, sucking insects and mites. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of leaf spraying of potassium silicate (K2SiO3) to control the southern red mite in coffee plants. Experiments were conducted in coffee plants (Coffea arabica L.), grown in a greenhouse, by means of completely randomized design with six treatments: Dose 0 (control), 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 liters of silicate potassium ha-1 and five replications. Plants treated with potassium silicate, regardless of the applied dose, had a lower O. ilicis infestation compared to the control, not allowing the population increase, thus a smaller damage in coffee leaves. The silicon content in leaves was higher in plants treated with the highest dose of potassium silicate. It was observed that there was induction of defense molecules such as tannins and lignin in plants sprayed with potassium silicate. It was concluded that the potassium silicate applied in leaf spraying had positive effect on reducing O. ilicis attack in coffee plants, even being a dicot. Therefore, the applications of potassium silicate by leaf spraying can be used in programs of integrated management of the southern red mite in coffee, with a view to sustainable management and environmental protection.

Quasi-interpolation has been studied in many papers, e. g., [5]. Here we introduce nonseparable scaling function quasi-interpolation and show that its approximation can provide similar convergence properties as scalar wavelet system. Several equivalent statements of accuracy of nonseparable scaling function are also given. In the numerical experiments, it appears that nonseparable scaling function interpolation has better convergence results than scalar wavelet systems in some cases.

Evaluation of Weather Research and Forecasting Model Parameterizations under Sea-Breeze Conditions in a North Sea Coastal Environment

Three atmospheric boundary layer （ABL） schemes and two land surface models that are used in the Weather Research and Forecasting （WRF） model, version 3.4.1, were evaluated with numerical simulations by using data from the north coast of France （Dunkerque）. The ABL schemes YSU （Yonsei University）, ACM2 （Asymmetric Convective Model version 2）, and MYJ （Mellor-Yamada-Janjic） were combined with two land surface models, Noah and RUC （Rapid Update Cycle）, in order to determine the performances under sea-breeze conditions. Particular attention is given in the determination of the thermal internal boundary layer （TIBL）, which is very important in air pollution scenarios. The other physics parameterizations used in the model were consistent for all simulations. The predictions of the sea-breeze dynamics output from the WRF model were compared with observations taken from sonic detection and ranging, light detection and ranging systems and a meteorological surface station to verify that the model had reasonable accuracy in predicting the behavior of local circulations. The temporal comparisons of the vertical and horizontal wind speeds and wind directions predicted by the WRF model showed that all runs detected the passage of the sea-breeze front. However, except for the combination of MYJ and Noah, all runs had a time delay compared with the frontal passage measured by the instruments. The proposed study shows that the synoptic wind attenuated the intensity and penetration of the sea breeze. This provided changes in the vertical mixing in a short period of time and on soil temperature that could not be detected by the WRF model simulations with the computational grid used. Additionally, among the tested schemes, the combination of the local- closure MYJ scheme with the land surface Noah scheme was able to produce the most accurate ABL height compared with observations, and it was also able to capture the TIBL.

Development of a Tropospheric Lidar for Observations of the Planetary Boundary Layer above Medellin, Colombia

In the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Sede Medellin, the Lasers and Spectroscopy Group （GLEO） has been designed and manufactured a tropospheric lidar station based on a pulsed Nd：YAG laser operating at 532-nm wavelength. The main scientific objective has been to evaluate the vertical structure of the Planetary Boundary Layer （PBL） in urban sites of Medellin-Colombia, South America, （Longitude 75°34′05″ West, Latitude 6°13′55″ North）, using suspended aerosols as tracers of the atmospheric motion. This paper reports the design, manufactures and performance of an elastic lidar system, which was operated under varying air pollution and meteorological conditions and the observations presented here were performed in early 2010, over the metropolitan area of Medellin, city included in the Andean region of Colombia.

Immiscible metallic melts in the deep Earth: clues from moissanite(SiC)in volcanic rocks

The occurrence of moissanite(SiC), as xenocrysts in mantle-derived basaltic and kimberlitic rocks sheds light on the interplay between carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in the lithospheric and sublithospheric mantle. SiC is stable only at fO2< △IW-6, while the lithospheric mantle and related melts commonly are considered to be much more oxidized. SiC grains from both basaltic volcanoclastic rocks and kimberlites contain metallic inclusions whose shapes suggest they were entrapped as melts. The inclusions consist of Si^0+ Fe3Si7± FeSi2 Ti ± CaSi2Al2± FeSi2Al3± CaSi2, and some of the phases show euhedral shapes toward Si^0. Crystallographically-oriented cavities are common in SiC, suggesting the former presence of volatile phase(s), and the volatiles extracted from crushed SiC grains contain H2+ CH4± CO2± *** observations suggest that SiC crystalized from metallic melts(Si-Fe-Ti-C ± Al ± Ca), with dissolved H2+ CH4± CO2± CO derived from the sublithospheric mantle and concentrated around interfaces such as the lithosphere-asthenosphere and crust-mantle boundaries. When mafic/ultramafic magmas are continuously fluxed with H2+ CH4 they can be progressively reduced, to a point where silicide melts become immiscible, and crystallize phases such as SiC. The occurrence of SiC in explosive volcanic rocks from different tectonic settings indicates that the delivery of H2+ CH4 from depth may commonly accompany explosive volcanism and modify the redox condition of some lithospheric mantle volumes. The heterogeneity of redox states further influences geochemical reactions such as melting and geophysical properties such as seismic velocity and the viscosity of mantle rocks.
