Detection of Mycoplasmas in Patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive degenerative disease of the motor neurons and the cause is unknown. Diverse factors such as genetic defects, nutritional deficiencies, head trauma, environmental toxin, autoimmune responses and viral and bacterial infections are involved. Mycoplasmas have been implicated as causal agents of different illnesses in human. The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of mycoplasmas in the bloodstream of patients with ALS. Patients with ALS and healthy individuals were included in the study. A blood sample was taken in tubes with or without anticoagulant. Mycoplasmas were detected by culture or direct PCR, and the presence of antibodies IgM and IgG against LAMPs of these microorganisms by Western blot. Cultures for aerobic facultative bacteria were also done. Blood samples from 13 patients and 44 healthy individuals were screened. All blood cultures for non-fermentative mycoplasmas and aerobic facultative bacteria were negative. Cultures for fermentative mycoplasmas were considered positive after identification of mycoplasmal DnA by PCR. Mycoplasma sp. was detected by culture or direct PCR in 6/13 (46%) patients and in 4/44 (9%) of healthy individuals. M. fermentans was detected by PCR using specific primers in six patients and in two healthy individuals. IgM against LAMPs of M. fermentans were detected in 6/13 (46%) blood samples from patients and in 13/44 (30%) from healthy individuals, while. IgG was detected in 4/13 (31%) patients and in 3/44 (7%) healthy individuals. The results of this study show that mycoplasmas cause a systemic infection and could play a role in the origin or progression of the ALS.

Breast Lesions Detection and Classification via YOLO-Based Fusion Models

With recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence,the use of deep learning models achieved remarkable advances in computer vision,ecommerce,cybersecurity,and ***,numerous applications provided efficient solutions to assist radiologists for medical imaging *** instance,automatic lesion detection and classification in mammograms is still considered a crucial task that requires more accurate diagnosis and precise analysis of abnormal *** this paper,we propose an end-to-end system,which is based on You-Only-Look-Once(YOLO)model,to simultaneously localize and classify suspicious breast lesions from entire *** proposed system first preprocesses the raw images,then recognizes abnormal regions as breast lesions and determines their pathology classification as either mass or *** evaluated the model on two publicly available datasets,with 2907 mammograms from the Curated Breast Imaging Subset of Digital Database for Screening Mammography(CBIS-DDSM)and 235 mammograms from Inbreast *** also used a privately collected dataset with 487 ***,we suggested a fusion models approach to report more precise detection and accurate *** best results reached a detection accuracy rate of 95.7%,98.1%and 98%for mass lesions and 74.4%,71.8%and 73.2%for calcification lesions,respectively on CBIS-DDSM,Inbreast and the private dataset.

Plasma-Induced γ-Fe Phase on S3A Alloy Ribbons

Amorphous alloy 2605S3A ribbons were exposed to cold plasmas of n2 and Ar-n2 at temperatures lower than Tx = 808 K. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the plasma treated ribbons, consist of a broad signal centered at 2θ = 45° characteristic of the amorphous state. The corresponding conversion X-ray M?ssbauer spectra of these ribbons consist of a superimposed singlet and a broadened magnetic sextet. The singlet with isomer shift δ = -0.11 mm/s can be assigned to γ-Fe austenite phase. Minor bulk magnetic changes in the alloy were measured as a consequence of these treatments, as analyzed from the resulting transmission M?ssbauer spectra. X-ray diffraction and M?ssbauer data of the crystallized samples are also reported. A qualitative assessment on the mechanical properties of the alloy associated with the presence of the γ-Fe phase is given. This γ-Fe phase can also be produced by simply heating the ribbons at temperatures as low as 423 K, an unexpected result.

Extraction and Separation Factor for Lanthanum(III) and Cerium(III) Complexes from Aqueous Medium Using Ionic Liquid and Kerosene

In this work, an experimental study was carried out to find the best-operating conditions for the study of the extraction percentage (%E) and the separation factor (SF) of La(III) and Ce(III) complexes. To carry out this study, a variation of β-diketone concentrations was used, keeping the concentration of tri-octyl phosphine oxide (TOPO) continuous at 0.05 M. The ratio of organic phase to the aqueous phase (O/A) was also studied. The %E and SF were analyzed and compared in the 1,1,1-trifluoro-2, 4-pentanedione (TFA) with TOPO, and 1,1,1,5,5,5-Hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione (HFAc) with TOPO in Ionic Liquid (IL) and Kerosene. The one-stage extraction efficiency in IL of La(III) and Ce(III) complexes was 42.13% and 77.48% for the TFA-TOPO system and La(III) and Ce(III) complexes were 94.33% and 97.67% for the HFAc-TOPO system. While the SF between Ce(III) and La(III) complexes was 4.91 for TFA-TOPO and 2.64 for HFAc-TOPO. On the other hand, the one-stage extraction efficiency in Kerosene of La(III) and Ce(III) complexes was 27.57% and 63.70% in the TFA-TOPO system. The one-stage extraction efficiency of La(III) and Ce(III) complexes were 99.87% and 99.73% for the HFAc-TOPO system in Kerosene while the SF between Ce(III) and La(III) complexes was 4.62 for TFA-TOPO and 0.49 for HFAc-TOPO. The main conclusion was that using two extractants (β-diketone and TOPO) produced a synergistic effect improving the extraction capacity and SF of La(III) and Ce(III) complexes for both systems in IL and Kerosene.

non-Painful Peripheral Inflammation Blocks Conditioned Place-Preference to Morphine and nicotine through an Ibuprofen-Sensitive and an Ibuprofen Insensitive Pathway

The field of neuroimmunology has expanded in recent years providing new insights and therapies into pathologies like stroke, autism, and depression. However, few works explore the relationship between inflammatory stimuli and motivation. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine how non-painful inflammatory stimuli affect reward. To test reward-response, we used the morphine and the nicotine induced conditioned place-preference and place-aversion model in rats with non-painful inflammation. The following inflammatory models were used: non-painful infectious inflammation: 24 hrs prior to conditioning sessions, an injection with Calmette-Guerin bacillus (CGB) 1 × 107 cfu, ip, was administered. non-painful non-infectious inflammation: 24 hrs prior to conditioning sessions, rats’ sciatic nerve was blocked and cut, followed by the injection of carrageenan (750 μl) in the paw. We then measured the cytokine concentration to determine the inflammatory profile of each of our models. Finally, we administered ibuprofen to determine if it could prevent the effect of inflammation over conditioned place-preference. We show that carrageenan significantly reduced the morphine-induced reward. non-painful inflammatory stimulus, CGB and denervation + carrageenan, inhibit the conditioned place-preference to morphine and nicotine, CGB also block conditioned place-aversion to nicotine;carrageenan has no effect on CPA. The administration of ibuprofen reinstates conditioned place-preference to morphine and nicotine in the carrageenan model, but has no effect in the CGB model;finally ibuprofen has no effect on CPA. Our data suggest that non-painful-inflammatory stimuli inhibit the reward system, independent of cytokine concentration. Furthermore, the administration of a PGE 2 inhibitor can importantly modulate this phenomenon.

Objective: To know the natural history of the first wave of pandemic influenza A(H1n1)pdm09 in the Southern hemisphere, through the detection of antibodies against influenza A(H1n1)pdm09 in a selected community, to estimate the population attack rate and its variations, the consultation rates, hospitallization and mortality rates. Methodology: A representative random sample of the population of a commune in Chile (San Felipe) was interviewed and taken blood samples between January and March 2010. A study against the antibodies of the influenza A(H1n1) pdm09 virus was conducted, by the technique of the Hemaglutination Inhibition (HAI) according to standardized methodology. Subjects with antibody titers ≥1:40 were considered positive. Results: 13.5% of the population of San Felipe had antibodies against influenza A(H1n1)pdm09;this percentage reached 30% of the population between 0 and 18 years and 6.1% among those over 19 years. The age variable was the only factor that evidenced significant differences in the prevalence of antibodies. There were no significant differences related to gender, vaccination history against seasonal inluenza, or comorbidity. 51% of people with positive serology showed In-FLUEnZA-LIKE SYMPTOMS. Conclusions: A relevant percentage of subclinical disease was detected in the first pandemic wave in Chile and the proportion of people with SARI and deaths was small. Data from epidemiological surveillance were useful to estimate the trend of TSI but not its magnitude.

In this paper,we have interest in the CdSe(cadmium selenide)semiconductor due to their physical and optical properties that depend on their morphology and size,as well as their possible applications in electronic and optoelectronic fields,for example,in the fabrication of solar cells or *** this reason,we synthetized nanoparticles of CdSe using the colloidal method,and varied the pH value:8 to 12,to know the effect of pH on the *** nanoparticles were characterized using the SEM(scanning electron microscope)and STM(scanning tunneling microscope)to know the morphology and electronic cloud on the surface of the *** each case,we found different sizes(from 6 to 11.5 nm)and shapes as filaments(fibbers),bars and spheres of CdSe nanoparticles and the 3D-FFT was obtained too.
