The objective of this study was to analyze the profitability of production Parica reforestation in the municipality of Paragominas-PA. The study was conducted in the municipality of Paragominas Messoregiao located in the northeast of Para. The basic data used in the economic evaluation of production of planting parica （costs and revenues） were derived from primary source through raising production cost of parica with farmers from the municipality, analyzing the period of production horizon of seven years. The discount rate chosen for economic evaluation was 10% per year. NPV （net present value） calculation IRR （internal rate of return）, BCR （benefit-cost ratio） and EP （break-even point）. To check the economic feasibility of producing parica the following criteria were used for economic analysis. The results for NPV, IRR and BC ratio were respectively of $495,970, 28.83% and 2.43. For EP （break-even point） the value of 41.08% was found, which demonstrates the minimum amount of production, so that revenue equals costs. Based on the results obtained, it was found that the reforestation model with parica proposed in this paper presents economically viable for deployment.

For knowing the effect that causes the extract from the leaves of the cedar (Cedrela odorata L.) in termites (Reticulitermes sp.) that affecting rooms, libraries, racks, fence posts and all articles wood source, considering the hypothesis that the extract from the leaves of the cedar is a substance that it makes termites die at a certain time, which makes it possible to use the extract as a biological insecticide that does not harm the environment and influencing the sustainable management of the rooms and many articles wood source. Termites were reared in a greenhouse in susceptible consumption and suitable for reproduction wood, of where the termites were collected and placed in petri dishes toguether with the remains of wood that contained. The application of the extract was done with a manual atomizer, sprinkling it on termites and wood waste, using 20 mL per petri dish and then counted the seconds until termites immovilized or dead in a 100%. Cedar extract acted as insecticide on termites but of all doses tested 5.0 g of leaves per 500 mL of water was the that caused the termites died in a few seconds after application under laboratory conditions.

UV radiation and ozonation were investigated as disinfection alternatives for the wastewater treatment plant. The inactivation of total and fecal coliforms using ozone and ultraviolet radiation as separate treatments was evaluated. Different ozone concentrations (3 to 40 mg O3/L) were applied and UV fluencies ranging from 8.5 to 12 mJ/cm2 at different pH values (from 5 to 9) were tested. Best results were obtained for ozone doses near 20 mg/min with removals of 72% and 78% of fecal and total coliforms, respectively. The ozone also was capable of oxidizing organic matter in the effluent measured as COD (the highest removal obtained was 36% for 20 mg O3/min). Maximum bacterial resistance was observed at pH 7 in both cases. The UV light offered a high bacterial inactivation (over 80%) and the lowest bacterial inactivation was observed at pH 7. Finally, we obtained the electric energy per order (EEO, kWh/m3/order), defined as the electric energy (kW-h) required to degrade a contaminant by one order of magnitude in a unit volume of contaminated water, being noteworthy that EEO values for the UV process resulted were lower than those determined for the process with ozone in all the water flow tested.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is sensitive to loading and mechanical stress that provokes morphological changes produced by the impact in the occlusal plane. Here, this impact is evaluated in TMJ articular disc and articular cartilage using an in vivo model of unilateral occlusal plane impact and by analysis of serial tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin (H-E) or with Masson trichrome technique. Thus, six groups of 5 Wistar rats (200 - 250 g) are subjected to biomechanical dental stimulation by placing unilateral resin occlusal interference, or unilateral tooth wear made by upper left molars artificial mechanical devastation (1 control and 2 experimental groups for each treatment). Each treatment is evaluated two times at 1 and 15 days post-treatment. By H-E staining, control groups show chondrocytes arrangement as several cord cell groups in comparison with the experimental groups, which show an arrangement in one cord cell along of articular disc. However, this yields no significant difference (p s. In contrast, in articular cartilage chondrocytes are random distributed along the superficial zone in control groups, while in experimental groups cell-free regions are observed in superficial zone. A degenerative process biomechanically induced by unilateral occlusal plane modification, causes cell and tissue changes on the TMJ structures that remain the degenerative changes observed in early osteoarthritis.

Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) is an asthma phenotype characterized by nasal polyps, chronic hypertrophic eosinophilic sinusitis, asthma, and sensitivity to aspirin. Unawareness of this disease by patients and their physicians may have serious consequences because of the risk of near-fatal asthma. Its confirmative diagnosis can be established only by provocative aspirin challenge, which represents a potential risk for patient health. Purpose: Because CCL4 plays an important role in several pulmonary conditions, we tested its immunoreactivity in nasal lavages and sera from control subjects, and from aspirin-sensitive and non-aspirin-sensitive patients. Method: Immunoreactivity of CCL4 was measured in serum and nasal lavages from 30 healthy controls (HC), 23 patients with AERD, and 20 patients with aspirin-tolerant asthma (ATA). Additionally, a serum biobank contained sera from 90 HC, 83 patients with AERD, and 69 patients with ATA was employed. Results: The serum immunoreactivity of CCL4 could distinguish both types of asthma phenotypes. Conclusion: CCL4 may play an unexpected role in thephysiopathology of AERD.

Reproductive biotechnologies offer us greater possibilities to improve animal genetics. However, the success of these depends on different factors such as the proper selection of the donor female. For this reason, endocrine markers have been used to evaluate the ovarian reserve, which allow a successful selection of donors. Recent research has shown, among other things, that concentrations greater than 0.130 ng/mL of anti-Mullerian hormone (also known as Muller-inhibiting substance, which is a member of the transforming growth factor beta superfamily of growth and differentiation factors) are related to donors of more than fifteen transferable embryos. Therefore, this review describes studies showing that the measurement of anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations, before superovulation programs, reduces the costs per embryo produced.

Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus is an increasingly important cause of nosocomial bacterial infections worldwide. s. aureus is responsible for several pathologies, including skin infections, endocarditis, meningitis, deep-tissue ulcers, and sepsis. s. aureus biofilm formation on catheters and other medical devices is a major post-operative concern, because biofilms are often the source of persistent and difficult to treat bacterial infections. While catheter-related s. aureus infections have been reported, the strains responsible for these infections have not been genetically characterized. We genetically characterized s. aureus strains isolated from hemodialysis catheters in Mexican patients. The frequency of 35 genes coding for adhesins, toxins, and other virulence-associated products in the 55 isolated s. aureus strains was determined using PCR, while real-time PCR was used to examine the level of gene expression. Of the 55 s. aureus strains isolated from 109 patients, 45 (81.8%) were determined to be methicillin-resistant. The icaA, rbf, sarA, and agr genes are involved in biofilm formation and bacterial dispersion and were detected in 96.3%, 40.0%, 74.5%, and 100% of s. aureus strains, respectively, and 70.9% of the strains formed a detectable biofilm. Interestingly, 67.2% of the strains contained the icaA, agr, spa, clfA, sdrC, sdrD, sdrE, seg, seh, and sei genes, suggesting that this gene combination is important for successful catheter colonization. The results of this study provide significant insight into the virulence gene make-up of catheter-colonizing s. aureus strains, and will assist in developing a more targeted treatment approach for persistent s. aureus biofilm contamination of medical devices.

Heavy Metals Monitoring in sediments from Lerma River in West-Central Mexico

The aim of this work was to carry out monitoring of some elements considered toxic in sediments from Lerma River. An analytical method was optimized in our laboratory for quantification of nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb) by using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission spectrometry (ICP-OEs). Ten sediments were collected along the Lerma River at variable distances and at 20 cm depth. samples were heated to 60°C to dryness, followed by separation of particle size using a 74-μ No. 200 mesh for homogeneity purposes. 0.2 g of sample underwent microwave-assisted acid digestion, followed by plate evaporation. The samples were dissolved in 10 mL with HNO3 at 5% v/v for ICP-OEs analysis. A certified reference material (CRM 8704) was used to evaluate the method’s accuracy and precision. The method showed linearity, precision, accuracy, and limits of quantification and detection acceptable for protocol validation of analytical method. The average results obtained in recovery of CRM 8704 were ~90% and precision was below 7% for all elements. Levels concentration of As, Cr, Pb show high pollution in A1, A7 and A8 sites. Therefore, Co, Mn and Ni can be considered in this study as normal values. In conclusion, concentration levels of As, Cr, Pb in sediments were high according to Us-EPA and NOM-147-sEMARNAT/ssA1-2004. The presence of these heavy metals in Lerma River could be due mainly for the emitted from industries, such as pharmaceutical, automotive, metal mechanics and tannery, and urban residual water. Finally, the method developed using ICP-OEs has enabled monitoring of these elements in sediments from Lerma River, with possible applications in a routine analytical laboratory.

Background: starr-Edwards prosthetic valves were used for valve replacement, but due to their high thrombogenic risk, they were withdrawn from market. Nevertheless, there are some cases of starr-Edwards prosthetic valve carriers that have shown long-term survival reaching up to 50 years. The objective of this study was to determine survival in 12 patients with mechanical starr-Edwards?prosthetic valve and risk factors for predicting valve dysfunction. Methods: Cross-sectional study of patients who had valve replacement with a starr-Edwards prosthetic valve in a single center from 1968 to 1990. socio-demographic data, valvular dysfunction variables and mortality were recorded. Logistic regression models to determine valvular dysfunction were constructed. survival was analyzed with Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier survival curves. Results: A total of 12 patients were analyzed. The median age was 59 years (48.5 - 64). Eleven patients had normal right and left ventricular function. The most common cause of valve replacement was rheumatic valve disease (75%) and it was more frequently in mitral position (50%). Valvular dysfunction was detected in 3 patients (25%). Atrial fibrillation had the highest association with valvular dysfunction (P = 0.005). stroke was seen in 25% of the population and the overall mortality was 33.3%. Conclusions: The survival of patients with starr-Edwards prosthetic valve was 66.66% in the 50-year follow-up. Atrial fibrillation had the highest association with prosthetic valvular dysfunction.
