This study presents a viable green synthesis approach to produce Ag and Cu nanoparticles (MNPs) by using carbohydrates such as glucose, fructose, sucrose, and starch as reducing agents and describes theirantimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli DH5a. Optical and diffused light scattering analyses showed the Ag NPs ranged from 20 to 75 nm and the Cu NPs varied from 20 to 160 nm, which supports the differences in their absorption bands (400-434 nm for Ag and 458-641 nm for Cu). The reducing sugars interacted differently with Ag^+ and Cu^2+ based on their size and hydrolysis by NaOH resulting in effective stabilization of Ag^0 and Cu^0 and variation in the bactericidal activities of the MNPs. The antibacterial effects of the MNPs were evaluated by measuring the inhibition zones using E. coli DH5a as a test organism. No growth was observed by restreaking different parts of the clearly inhibited zones into new culture plates indicating the bactericidal efficacy of the Ag and Cu MNPs. The Ag NPs were found to be more effective in terms of the size of their in hibition zones (1.21-1.82 cm) compared with those of the Cu NPs (0.0-1.2 cm). This study provides a promising basis for the formulation of a new gen eration of bactericidal agents.

The direct determination of toxic metal ions, in environmental samples, is difficult because of the latter＇s presence in trace concentration in association with complex matrices, thereby leading to insufficient sensitivity and selectivity of the methods used. The simultaneous removal of the matrix and preconcentration of the metal ions, through solid phase extraction,serves as the promising solution. The mechanism involved in solid phase extraction（SPE）depends on the nature of the sorbent and analyte. Thus, SPE is carried out by means of adsorption, ion exchange, chelation, ion pair formation, and so forth. As polymeric supports, the commercially available Amberlite resins have been found very promising for designing chelating matrices due to its good physical and chemical properties such as porosity, high surface area,durability and purity. This review presents an overview of the various works done on the modification of Amberlite XAD resins with the objective of making it an efficient sorbent. The methods of modifications which are generally based on simple impregnation, sorption as chelates and chemical bonding have been discussed. The reported results, including the preconcentration limit, the detection limit, sorption capacity, preconcentration factors etc., have been reproduced.

Silver ions substituted samarium strontium manganite(Sm0.55Sr0.30Ag0.15MnO3) pervoskite was synthesized by using respective oxides in stoichiometric ratio through solid state reaction. The as-prepared sample was characterized by various analytical techniques to confirm its formation and understand the effect of monovalent silver ions in pervoskite lattice. X-ray diffraction pattern confirms the single phase formation while grain morphology in SEM image indicates good connectivity among the grains. The enhancement in metal to insulator transition temperature shows quenched disorder and magnetoresistance phenomena. The magnetoresistance（MR） and temperature coefficient of resistance（TCR） emerge from grain growth factor and homogeneity induced by Ag+ions in the lattice. The reduction in hysteresis loss resulted from antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic（TN） and ferromagnetic- paramagnetic（Tc） transitions reveals the removal of disorder in perovskite lattice by Ag+ions substitution. This increases the magnetic moment across distinct ions on the applying magnetic field. The rise in MR%（99%） with silver doping emerging from smooth spin tunneling of the grains across the boundary and suppression of the disordered magnetic fluctuations with increase in magnetic field has been reported. The present compound exhibits the first order nature of magnetism and observed first time the highest value of TCR ~ 95%.

Pancreaticoduodenectomy: a comparison of superior approach with classical Whipple's technique

BACKGROUND: Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is the standard procedure for resecting tumors arising from the periampullary area and the pancreatic head. Nevertheless this procedure is inherently difficult and associated with high morbidity and mortality. Besides, the technique applied for exposing the portal and superior mesenteric veins is time-consuming, difficult and associated with the risk of major venous injury. Recently we have introduced a modified approach for making this part of the procedure quick, safe and bloodless, which constitutes the subject of this study. METHODS: Patients who underwent pylorus preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PPPD) either by superior approach technique (group 1) or by classical Whipple’s technique (group 2) were retrospectively identified. Age-sex composition, body mass index (BMI), total operative time, operative blood loss, intraoperative blood transfusion requirement, morbidity, mortality and length of hospital stay were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Between January 1997 and December 2011, 72 patients underwent PPPD by the superior approach technique (group 1) and 38 underwent PPPD by the classical Whipple’s technique (group 2) at our institution. Statistically significant differences were observed in operative time (208.1±46.3 minutes in group 1 vs 322.0±33.8 minutes in group 2), operative blood loss (601.0±250.3 mL in group 1 vs 1371.5±471.8 mL in group 2), and intraoperative blood transfusion requirement [10 (13.9%) patients in group 1 and 24 (63.2%) in group 2]. Among 18 (16.4%) obese patients, significant differences in operativetime, operative blood loss and intraoperative blood transfusion requirement were observed between groups 1 and 2. There was no significant inter-group difference in complication rate among obese patients, but comparing obese patients with normal weight patients revealed higher rates of complications like pancreatic fistula (27.8% vs 6.5%), delayed gastric emptying (16.7% vs 5.4%), and in

Background:sex identification by morphological assessment of various bones of the skeleton had been one of the oldest approaches in forensic anthropology and medico-legal *** and Objective:The aim of this study was to make the morphometric measurements of the foramen magnum in determining the feasibility of sex determination using computed tomography(CT).Materials and Methods:The data for our study was obtained from 100 patients having CT scan of the head and neck region(Siemens Somatom 256 slice CT scanner)with 1mm contiguous axial scans using bone window settings(2000 HU with 400 HU in centre),scan time of one second and exposure parameters 140 kVp and *** different measurements taken include the antero-posterior(AP)diameter,transverse diameter and area of the foramen ***:There were 50 males and 50 females with the age range of 18 to 75 *** have a higher average value than females in all of the parameters measured on foramen *** using Studenfs T-test,all the measured parameters showed significant difference between the sexes(p<0.01).Conclusion:The expression of sexual dimorphism in the foramen magnum region shows significant difference between the sexes,therefore this area of the skull should be considered a useful area in the identification of sex.

Synchronous Adenocarcinomas of the Jejunum and Sigmoid Colon—A Rare Case

Primary adenocarcinomas of the small bowel are rare. Because of their rarity, non-specific symptoms and diagnostic difficulty, small bowel tumors are often diagnosed and treated late in their course. The diagnostic difficulty is increased when these tumors arise in association with primary synchronous tumors of the colon. We present a case of a 17-year-old female who was evaluated for anemia and bleeding per rectum. Colonoscopy revealed multiple colonic polyps. Intraoperatively, she was surprisingly found to be having a synchronous jejunal growth apart from multiple colonic polyoid lesions. Total colectomy was performed along with resection of jejunal growth. Histopathology of colonic specimen revealed multiple polypoid projections with one polyp showing adenocarcinoma and rest severe dysplasia. Histopathology of jejunal growth revealed poorly-differentiated adenocarcinoma. Very rarely, cases have been reported in literature, where the primary adenocarcinoma of the jejunum developed synchronously with colonic adenocarcinoma, and both treated surgically on the same occasion.

Importance of medicinal plants to health care has been great and herbal preparations are being produced at industrial scale particularly in developing countries. The plant products obtained have a long history of use in therapeutics, aromatherapy and food depending on the chemical constituents and their bioactivity. In the recent past, marigolds have received a great attention in scientific research, because of their multiple use and also the information available about their phytochemistry and bioactivity. Tagetes species commonly known as marigold is native to Mexico, being used for medicinal and ornamental purposes. The plant is useful due to its unique phytoconstituents for a range of diseases and disorders and is reportedly effective against piles, kidney troubles, muscular pain, ulcers and wound healing and the flowers are helpful in fever, stomach and liver complaints and also in eye diseases. In India, marigold is also extensively used on religious and social occasions such as in the beautification of mandaps and pooja places;offerings at temples;marriage decorations and landscape planning due to variable size and colour of its flower. Present review is an effort to bring together the different strategies developed for the growth and cultivation of marigold, its ecophysiological and remediation relevance under a variety of environmental conditions and possible allelopathic potential. It includes reports on pharmacological aspects like antibacterial, antifungal, larvicidal, hepatoprotective, insecticidal, mosquitocidal, nematicidal, wound healing, antioxidant, anticancer and antidiabetic properties/activity of Tagetes.

Psoas muscle is a rare location for hydatid disease. Here we present a case of infected hydatid cyst left psoas muscle presenting as left flank pain, fever, local flank tenderness, and raised blood counts. Preoperative diagnoses was made by Ultrasonography (USG) and Computed Tomography (CT) abdomen, although serology for hydatid disease was negative.
