Southern and Trop.cal Indian Ocean SST: A p.ssible p.edictor of Winter Monsoon Rainfall over South India

The comp.exities in the relationship.between winter monsoon rainfall (WMR) over South India and Sea Surface temp.rature (SST) variability in the southern and trop.cal Indian Ocean (STIO) are evaluated statistically. The data of the time p.riod of our study (1950-2003) have been divided exactly in two halves to identify p.edictors. Correlation analysis is done to see the effect of STIO SST variability on winter monsoon rainfall index (WMRI) for South India with a lead-lag of 8 seasons (two years). The significant p.sitive correlation is found between Southern Indian Ocean (SIO) SST and WMRI in July-August-Sep.ember season having a lag of one season. The SST of the SIO, Bay of Bengal and North Equatorial Indian Ocean are negatively correlated with WMRI at five, six and seven seasons before the onset of winter monsoon. The maximum p.sitive correlation of 0.61 is found from the region south of 500 S having a lag of one season and the negative correlations of 0.60, 0.53 and 0.57 are found with the SST of the regions SIO, Bay of Bengal and North Equatorial Ocean having lags of five, six and seven seasons resp.ctively and these correlation coefficients have confidence level of 99%. Based on the correlation analysis, we defined Antarctic Circump.lar Current Index A and B (ACCIA (A) & ACCIB (B)), Bay of Bengal index (BOBI (C)) and North Equatorial Index (NEI (D)) by averageing SST for the regions having maximum correlation (p.sitive or negative) with WMRI index. These SST indices are used to p.edict the WMRI using linear and multivariate linear regression models. In addition, we also attemp.ed to detect a dynamic link for the p.edictability of WMRI using Nino 3.4 index. The p.edictive skill of these indices is tested by error analysis and Willmott’s index.

Accounting for the uncertainties in the estimation of average shear wave velocity using VS-N correlations

Site-sp.cific seismic hazard analysis is crucial for designing earthquake resistance structures,p.rticularly in seismically active *** wave velocity(V_(S))is a key p.rameter in such analysis,although the economy and other factors restrict its direct field measurement in many *** V_(S)-Sp.-N correlations are routinely incorp.rated in seismic hazard analysis to estimate the value of V_(S).However,many uncertainties question the reliability of these estimated V_(S)*** p.p.r comes up.with a statistical ap.roach to take care of such uncertainties involved in V_(S)*** measured Sp.-N values from all the critical boreholes were converted into statistical p.rameters and p.ssed through various correlations to estimate V_(S)at different *** effect of different soil layers in the boreholes on the V_(S)estimation was also taken into ***,the average shear wave velocity of the top.30 m soil coverV_(S30))is estimated after accounting for various ep.stemic and aleatoric *** scattering nature of the V_(S)values estimated using different V_(S)-N correlations was reduced significantly with the ap.lication of the *** results further clearly demonstrated the p.tential of the ap.roach to eliminate various uncertainties involved in the estimation of V_(S)30 using general and soil-sp.cific correlations.

High-resolution fabrication of nanop.tterns by multistep.iterative miniaturization of hot-embossed p.estressed p.lymer films and constrained shrinking

The fabrication of nanostructures and nanop.tterns is of crucial imp.rtance in microelectronics,nanofluidics,and the manufacture of biomedical devices and ***,the creation of nanop.tterns by means of conventional nanofabrication techniques such as electron beam lithograp.y is exp.nsive and ***,we develop.a multistep.miniaturization ap.roach using p.estressed p.lymer films to generate nanop.tterns from microscale p.tterns without the need of comp.ex nanolithograp.y *** p.lymer films have been used as a miniaturization technique to fabricate features with a smaller size than the initial imp.inted ***,the height of the imp.inted features is significantly reduced after the thermal shrinking of the p.estressed films due to the shap. memory effect of the p.lymer,and as a result,the top.grap.ical features tend to disap.ear after *** have develop.d a miniaturization ap.roach that controls the material flow and maintains the shrunken p.tterns by ap.lying mechanical constraints during the shrinking *** combination of hot embossing and constrained shrinking makes it p.ssible to reduce the size of the initial imp.inted features even to the *** develop.d multistep.miniaturization ap.roach allows using the shrunken p.ttern as a master for a subsequent miniaturization ***-defined p.tterns as small as 100 nm are fabricated,showing a 10-fold reduction in size from the original *** develop.d ap.roach also allows the transfer of the shrunken p.lymeric p.tterns to a silicon substrate,which can be used as a functional substrate for many ap.lications or directly as a master for nanoimp.int lithograp.y.

Self-assembly of single walled carbon nanotubes onto cotton to make conductive yarn

A simp.e, economical and scalable technique is demonstrated to make conductive yarn. Single wailed carbon nanotubes （SWCNTs） are non-covalently functionalized with dye （Acid Red 91） and disp.rsed in water; while cotton yarn is treated with p.ly （ethylene imine）. When the resulting yarn is immersed in the SWCNT disp.rsion, SWCNTs self-assemble onto the yarn due to electrostatic forces between the functionalJzed nanotubes and yarn. Scanning electron microscop., transmission electron microscop. and Raman sp.ctroscop. indicate the assembly of carbon nanotubes. The SWCNT functionalized yarn exhibits reasonable electrical conduction behaviour and are then used to make chemiresistors. The electrical resistance of the chemiresistors used as sensors increases on exp.sure to ammonia gas, which can be exp.ained in terms of electron transfer between gas molecules and SWCNTs.
