Evaluation of the mechanical degradation of carbonate aggregate by rock strength tests

Aggregate degradation(AD) is one of the major reasons accounting for failure of aggregate materials, and the mechanical degradation of aggregate materials can be determined by different test methods. This process basically requires many aggregate samples and special instruments, and thus is *** main purpose of this research is to evaluate the possibility of estimating the AD characteristics using rock strength tests and to investigate the relationships between AD properties and rock strength *** understanding the relationships, two common rock strength tests are employed, i.e. unconfined compressive strength(UCS) and point load index(PLI) tests. In the tests, the AD properties of 40 kinds of carbonate aggregates sampled from Iran were studied. The AD properties were determined by Los Angeles abrasion value(LAAV), aggregate impact value(AIV) and aggregate crushing value(ACV). Also,the samples are classified according to the strength and rock types, and the effect of this classification is investigated based on the relationship between rock strengths and AD properties. The results indicate that the PLI is better than UCS for evaluation of AD properties. Among rock strength tests, PLI has a closer relationship with AIV(R^2 = 0.832). Also, UCS has relative larger effects on the ACV(R^2 = 0.812) under the same loading condition. The weakest correlation occurs between LAAV and UCS(R^2 = 0.679). In view of the rational AD properties in the predictive procedure, it is possible to predict AD properties based on the strength tests and rock types. The results also show that the prediction of AD properties using rock strength test based on rock types yields better correlations than that using unclassified samples. The classification based on rock types can extrapolate the different relationships of AD prediction from rock strength tests. The results in this context could be used for preliminarily selecting proper rock aggregates with a limit of allowable AD

Mixed-effects modeling for tree height prediction models of Oriental beech in the Hyrcanian forests

Height–diameter relationships are essential elements of forest assessment and modeling *** this work,two linear and eighteen nonlinear height–diameter equations were evaluated to find a local model for Oriental beech（Fagus orientalis Lipsky） in the Hyrcanian Forest in *** predictive performance of these models was first assessed by different evaluation criteria： adjusted R^2（R^2_（adj））,root mean square error（RMSE）,relative RMSE（%RMSE）,bias,and relative bias（%bias） *** best model was selected for use as the base mixed-effects *** parameters for test plots were estimated with different tree selection *** show that the Chapman–Richards model had better predictive ability in terms of adj R^2（0.81）,RMSE（3.7 m）,%RMSE（12.9）,bias（0.8）,%Bias（2.79） than the other ***,the calibration response,based on a selection of four trees from the sample plots,resulted in a reduction percentage for bias and RMSE of about 1.6–2.7%.our results indicate that the calibrated model produced the most accurate results.

Comparison of Correlation Dimension and Fractal Dimension in Estimating BIS index

This paper compares the correlation dimension (D2) and Higuchi fractal dimension (HFD) approaches in estimating BIS index based on of electroencephalogram (EEG). The single-channel EEG data was captured in both ICU and operating room and different anesthetic drugs, including propofol and isoflurane were used. For better analysis, application of adaptive segmentation on EEG signal for estimating BIS index is evaluated and compared to fixed segmentation. Prediction probability (PK) is used as a measure of correlation between the predictors and BIS index to evaluate the proposed methods. The results show the ability of these algorithms (specifically HFD algorithm) in predicting BIS index. Also, evolving fixed and adaptive windowing methods for segmentation of EEG reveals no meaningful difference in estimating BIS index.

Evaluation of Drought Hazard Area of GharehAghaj Basin in Iran, Using GIS

In GharehAghaj basin drought has the most profound effect on the way of living and regional economy. Drought Hazard by nature is a result of interrelated parameters concerned. The objective of this paper presents a model to assess hazard of drought using the Geographical Information System (GIS). The data analyzed have been gathered from the records, reports and maps published by the governmental offices of Iran. Various drought hazard indicators have different severity classification in different models. The drought hazard indicator maps take into account the meteorological, hydrological, physical and socioeconomic characteristics that related to drought hazard. Each of the hazard indicator maps and also final hazard map are classified into 4 hazard classes of drought: mild, moderate, severe and very severe. The final hazard classes were defined on the basis of hazard scores arrived at by assigning the appropriate attributes to the indicators and the final hazard map was prepared by overlaying different hazard indicator maps in the GIS, deploying the new model. The final Hazard Map shows that moderate hazard areas (89.87% of the basin) are much widespread than areas under severe hazard (10.13% of the basin) which are observed in the Southeast of the region.

Point Selection for Triangular 2-D Mesh Design Using Adaptive Forward Tracking Algorithm

Two-dimensional mesh-based motion tracking preserves neighboring relations (through connectivity of the mesh) and also allows warping transformations between pairs of frames;thus, it effectively eliminates blocking artifacts that are common in motion compensation by block matching. However, available uniform 2-D mesh model enforces connec-tivity everywhere within a frame, which is clearly not suitable across occlusion boundaries. To overcome this limitation, BTBC (background to be covered) detection and MF (model failure) detection algorithms are being used. In this algorithm, connectivity of the mesh elements (patches) across covered and uncovered region boundaries are broken. This is achieved by allowing no node points within the background to be covered and refining the mesh structure within the model failure region at each frame. We modify the occlusion-adaptive, content-based mesh design and forward tracking algorithm used by Yucel Altunbasak for selection of points for triangular 2-D mesh design. Then, we propose a new triangulation procedure for mesh structure and also a new algorithm to justify connectivity of mesh structure after motion vector estimation of the mesh points. The modified content-based mesh is adaptive which eliminates the necessity of transmission of all node locations at each frame.

Assessment of depth of anesthesia using principal component analysis

A new approach to estimating level of uncon-sciousness based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is proposed. The Electroen-cephalogram (EEG) data was captured in both Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and operating room, using different anesthetic drugs. Assuming the central nervous system as a 20-tuple source, window length of 20 seconds is applied to EEG. The mentioned window is considered as 20 nonoverlapping mixed-signals (epoch). PCA algorithm is applied to these epochs, and larg-est remaining eigenvalue (LRE) and smallest remaining eigenvalue (SRE) were extracted. Correlation between extracted parameters (LRE and SRE) and depth of anesthesia (DOA) was measured using Prediction probability (PK). The results show the superiority of SRE than LRE in predicting DOA in the case of ICU and isoflurane, and the slight superiority of LRE than SRE in propofol induction. Finally, a mixture model containing both LRE and SRE could predict DOA as well as Relative Beta Ratio (RBR), which expresses the high capability of the proposed PCA based method in estimating DOA.

Thrombolysis in Pulmonary Embolia at the Cardiology Department of Aristide le Dantec Cardiology Department

Introduction: Venous thromboembolic disease is the 3rd most common cardiovascular pathology. Acute pulmonary embolism constitutes its most serious presentation and a major cause of mortality, morbidity and hospitalization in Africa and Senegal. The objectives of this work were to study the epidemiological profile of pulmonary embolisms and to evaluate the practice of thrombolysis in patients in a cardiological setting. Methodology: A retrospective, descriptive study was carried out in the Cardiology department of the Aristide le Dantec Hospital (HALD) over the period from August 2011 to December 2019 in patients hospitalized in the cardiology department for pulmonary embolism confirmed by CT angiography and/or with thrombi on cardiac ultrasound and who had also benefited from thrombolysis. Results: Thirty-one patients with pulmonary embolism were thrombolyzed. There was a predominance of the female gender with an average age of 45.97 years. Risk factors were dominated by age (61.29%) followed by obesity (32.26%) and prolonged immobilization (22.5%). The functional signs were dominated by dyspnea (77.42%) followed by chest pain (51.62%) and cough (35.48%). The physical signs were dominated by right heart failure in 22.5% of cases, pulmonary condensation syndrome in 19.35%, and inflammatory large leg in 12.9% of cases. Echocardiography and chest CT angiography were the means of diagnosis. Nine of our patients presented with an intracardiac mass. Thrombotic treatment was administered in all patients. The average length of hospitalization was 12.32 days and in-hospital mortality was 32.26%. Conclusion: Pulmonary embolism does exist in our regions and is responsible for heavy mortality. Rapid and efficient support is essential. Prevention remains the corner-stone in the fight against this pathology.

Compressive Pericardial Teratoma about a Case at Regional Hospital of Saint Louis/Senegal

Introduction: Cardiac tumors in children are rare. Most are discovered in children under one year of age. Echocardiography is the basic examination for the screening, it allows their detection from the fetal stage. Observation: She was a 14-year-old patient with no known history of pathology. She was admitted to our department for the exploration of dyspnea and chest pain. At her admission, she had stable hemodynamics. At cardiac auscultation, heart sounds were muffled. The EKG recorded a sinus rhythm, and negative T-waves from V1 to V4. The chest X-ray showed cardiomegaly and a dense, rounded, heterogeneous left hilar opacity, well limited. Echocardiography objected to a great intrapericardial mass in front of the left cardiac cavities compressing part of the left atrium and left ventricle associated with an important pericardial effusion. The CT scan found a heterogeneous pericardial suspected myxoma mass. The pathological examination confirmed pericardial teratoma. The patient had an excision of the pericardial mass. The evolution after surgery was favorable. Conclusion: Intra-pericardial teratomas are benign tumor. Complete removal of the tumor is curative and without recurrence.

St-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction with Multiple Complications: A Case Report

Introduction: ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) usually involves complete thrombotic occlusion of a coronary artery and require urgent reperfusion;it is one of the leading cause of global mortality and morbidity worldwide. A variety of mechanical, rhythmic, conductive, embolic or hemodynamic complications can occur following STEMI, especially when the treatment is delayed or inadequate. Clinical presentation: A 58-year-old patient with hypertension was admitted to our department for a circumferential STEMI complicated by an ischemic stroke;received 24 hours after the onset of pain. His blood pressure was 100/60 mmHg, heart rate was 55 beats/min. The examination revealed right central facial paralysis and a slight motor deficit of the right upper limb (muscle strength 4/5). The first electrocardiogram (ECG) showed a significant circumferential ST-segment elevation with Q waves in the same territory, as well as a Luchiani Wenckebach atrio-ven- tricular block. The first echocardiography performed showed apical akinesia along with the presence of an apical thrombus. Coronarography was not performed because it was not available and the patient was given curative low molecular weight heparin combined with dual antiplatelet therapy, an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor and high dose statins. Seventy-two hours later, the ECG showed a complete atrioventricular block with narrow QRS and the average ventricular rate was 51 beats/min. The patient was asymptomatic. Another echocardiography was performed to assess new complications and showed a rupture of the left ventricular wall and a moderate amount of circumferential pericardial effusion, without any sign of cavity compression. No particular therapeutic attitude was adopted apart from close monitoring with daily ECG and echocardiography. Ten days later, spontaneous regression of the AV Bloc was noted. Epidemiological Aspect of ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) in Saint-Louis of Senegal

Background: Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) has become the largest and most common cause of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) related deaths worldwide, accounting for more than 50%. In Senegal, a few studies done on the topic showed a low prevalence of acute coronary syndrome in hospital settings. In the city of Saint-Louis in Northern Senegal, there is little epidemiological data on Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) and no study specifically concerned with ST-segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) has been carried out to date. With this in mind, we conducted a study that focused on the analysis of STEMI patients hospitalized in the Cardiology Department of the Regional Hospital of Saint-Louis. The aim of our study was to collect and analyze the epidemiological aspect of STEMI. Results: There were 39 cases of STEMI, (i.e. 82.29% of ACS), giving a hospital prevalence of 8.21%. There was a slight male predominance with a male to female ratio of 1.05. The average age of our patients was 62.93 years ranging from 38 to 90 years. The average time between the onset of pain and arrival at the hospital was 50 hours, ranging from 1 hour to 720 hours. Patients received within the first 12 hours made up 66% (n = 26) of our population, among them, 80.76% (n = 21) (i.e. 53.84% of STEMIs) were able to benefit from thrombolysis. All thrombolysis was performed with Streptokinase. The mean time to thrombolysis was 6 hours ranging from 1 hour and 45 minutes to 11 hours. Arterial hypertension was the most frequent cardiovascular risk factor in our popular with a 43.6% prevalence, followed by diabetes (33.33%), then active smoking (23%). Chest pain was the most frequent symptom, reported in 34 patients (87.17%). The lesions on the Electrocardiogram (EKG) were located in the anterior territory in 64% of the cases (n = 25), in the inferior territory in 28% of the cases (n = 11), in the circumferential territory in 5% of the cases (n = 2), and lateral territory in 5% of the cases (n = 2).
