Purpose:To evaluate the anatomic-functional results and complications associated with the use of photodynamic therapy(PDT) with verteporfin in the treatment of choroidal neovascularization(CNV) secondary to angioid streaks(AS) .Methods:The authors retrospectively evaluated 10 consecutive patients(10 eyes) with CNV secondary to *** patients were treated with standard PDT with verteporfin *** primary out-come to evaluate was the proportion of cases that lost< 3 lines of visual acuity(VA) measured on ETDRS *** outcomes were changes in the greatest linear dimension(GLD) and in the area of the *** previously examined patients were used as a control ***:The mean duration of follow-up was 18 months(SD 9.2,range 6-36 months) .In nine cases CNV was subfoveal and in one case,*** VA was 20/126 at baseline(range 20/40-20/320) and 20/500 at the final examination(range 20/64-20/800) .Three patients(30%) lost< 3 lines of *** patients(40%) lost ≥ 6 lines of *** mean line change was 4.9 *** mean GLD went from 2861 μ m at baseline(SD 1086.6,range 1350-4300 μ m) to 4452 μ m at last visit(SD 2564.2,range 1260-9450 μ m) .The mean area of the lesion was 3.78 mm2 at baseline(SD 1.9,range 1.0-5.7 mm2) and 12.1 mm2 at the final examination(SD 15.1,range 0.8-50.6 mm2) .One patient developed a subfoveal rip of the retinal pigment *** the control group,the mean duration of follow-up was 15 months(SD 2.4,range 12-18 months) .At baseline,the mean VA was 20/160(range 20/100-20/320) and the mean GLD was 2685 μ m(SD 676.8,range 1800-3500 μ m) .At the last examination,mean VA was 20/640(range:20/400-20/800) and mean GLD was 5528 μ m(SD 2106.90,range 3500-8000 μ m) .Conclusion:PDT with verteporfin does not seem to be a good treatment for stabilization of VA and lesion size in CNV secondary to AS,although the overall results seem to be slightly better in the group of patients treated with PDT than in the control group.

Vapor Phase Decarbonylation of Furfural to Furan over Nickel Supported on SBA-15 Silica Catalysts

Vapor-phase transformations of furfural over SBA-15 silica supported Ni catalysts under H2 in a continuous-flow reactor at atmospheric pressure and 170°C and 230°C were investigated. Two different samples having Ni loadings of 5 and 20 wt% (denoted here by SBA-5Ni and SBA-20Ni, respectively) were prepared by impregnation and characterized by atomic absorption spectroscopy, N2 sorption analysis, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Furan and furfuryl alcohol were two primary products resulting, respectively, from decarbonylation and hydrogenation of furfural. Under the conditions of the study, both reactions exhibited structure sensitivity evidenced by changes in product selectivities with variable Ni loadings. Compared with SBA-20Ni, the 5 wt% Ni catalyst showed better catalytic activity, reaching a furfural conversion of 100 mol% and a selectivity to furan of 98 mol%, after 5 h of time-on-stream at 230°C.

Study and Characterization of Organically Modified Silica-Zirconia Anti-Graffiti Coatings Obtained by Sol-Gel

In this work, it is presented the synthesis and characterization of transparent and colorless organic-inorganic hybrid anti-graffiti protective materials obtained by sol-gel method. This type of materials is based on MTES (methyltriethoxysilane), TPOZ (tetrapropoxide of zirconium) and PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane). The synthesis has been carried out at 25, 35 and 45 oC in order to evaluate the role of temperature in the structure, microstructure and anti-graffiti behavior as well. The incorporation of zirconium within the organic modified silica network, of sols after being gelled and dried, is evident by a shoulder which increased with temperature situated at 950 cm-1 (Si-O-Zr bonds), and it is homogenously dispersed inside the matrix avoiding the formation of large ZrO2 precipitates. As the temperature increases, the hydrolysis and condensation reactions occur in more extension and thus, the obtained sols are more cross-linked and present more Si-O-Zr linkages. The promising anti-graffiti behavior of the protective hybrids was qualitatively determined being the spot removal higher than 90%.

Reverse or inverted apical ballooning in a case of refeeding syndrome

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is characterized by the development of transient left ventricular regional wall motion abnormalities,in the absence of significant coronary artery obstruction. This syndrome usually occurs in women and is frequently associated with an intense emotional or physical stress. It usually involves apical segments,but in the recent years atypical forms have been described. Inverted or reverse Takotsubo is a variant in which the basal and midventricular segments are hypokinetic,sparing contractile function of the apex. In this report we describe the case of a 54-year-old woman,with chronic malnutrition,initially admitted because of hypoglycemia and severe electrolyte disturbance due to a refeeding syndrome. Within the next hours she experienced acute cardiac symptoms and developed heart failure with low cardiac output. Electrocardiogram(ECG),elevation of troponin and echocardiographic findings were consistent with inverted Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. To the best of our knowledge,this is the first incidence reported of inverted Takotsubo triggered by refeeding syndrome.

Diabetic nephropathy and inflammation

Diabetic nephropathy(DN) is the leading cause of end-stage renal failure worldwide. Besides, diabetic nephropathy is associated with cardiovascular disease, and increases mortality of diabetic patients. Several factors are involved in the pathophysiology of DN, including metabolic and hemodynamic alterations, oxidative stress, and activation of the renin-angiotensin system. In recent years, new pathways involved in the development and progression of diabetic kidney disease have been elucidated; accumulated data have emphasized the critical role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. Expression of cell adhesion molecules, growth factors, chemokines and pro-inflammatory cytokines are increased in the renal tissues of diabetic patients, and serum and urinary levels of cytokines and cell adhesion molecules, correlated with albuminuria. In this paper we review the role of inflammation in the development of diabetic nephropathy, discussing some of the major inflammatory cytokines involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy, including the role of adipokines, and take part in other mediators of inflammation, as adhesion molecules.

Development of a Water Quality Index (WQI) of an Artificial Aquatic Ecosystem in Mexico

A Water Quality Index (WQI) is a simple numeric expression reflecting the quality of water in any ecosystem at a given time. The objective of this study was to develop a WQI for the man-made dam Francisco I. Madero located in Chihuahua, Mexico. Eight points were randomly selected in the dam area and at each point water samples were collected monthly from March 2011 to February 2012 at three depths;0.30 m, 5 m and 10 m. The following physical-chemical variables were measured: potential hydrogen (pH), electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature (T), turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), total hardness (TH) and chlorides (Cl-). In a first step for data analysis, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed for each variable considering a factorial treatment design 12 × 3 in which factor A was the month with 12 levels (sampling months) and factor B was the depth with three levels (0.30 m, 5 m and 10 m). In a second statistical step, the WQI was calculated for each month only for the surface sampling (0.30 m) and the resulting value was classified under three categories;2.5 as excellent water. The results showed the following ranges for single variables: pH of 7.63 - 10.65, EC of 190 - 320 μS·cm-1, DO of 1.30 - 12.1 mg·L-1, T of 11.30°C - 30°C, Turbidity of 0-1, 120 NTU, TDS of 170 - 220 mg·L-1, TH of 240 - 900 mg·L-1 and Cl- of 7.28 - 7034 mg·L-1. The calculated WQI demonstrated that water quality varies seasonally and was classified as poor in the rainy season to good in winter season. We conclude that in general the water from the dam is acceptable and suitable for ecological and a broad spectrum of other purposes.

Nitric oxide production is associated to increased lipoperoxidation and active caspase-3 in demyelinated brain regions of the taiep rat

We previously showed that the increase in nitric oxide (NO) levels and NO synthase (NOS) expression correlate with the progression of reactive astrocytosis and demyelination in the brains of 6-month-old taiep rats. Increased levels of NO can result in high concentration of peroxynitrite and thus cause tissue damage, which consists of lipoperoxidation of the cytoplasmic membrane, such as the myelin, and of apoptotic and necrotic cell-death. On this basis, we studied whether the increased NO production is associated with lipoperoxidation and cell death in the cerebellum and brainstem over the age (1, 3, 6, and 8 months) of taiep rats. The results were compared with those obtained in matched Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. We measured the levels of nitrites (NO production), malonyldialdehyde, and 4-hydroxyalkenal (lipoperoxidation) in brain tissue homogenates. The three NOS isoforms and cleaved caspase-3 were evaluated by using ELISA and immunostaining techniques. Our results showed that NO production and lipoperoxidation increased in the cerebellum and brainstem as the age of the taiep rats increased compared to SD rats. The overexpression of nNOS and iNOS were in the Purkinje cells, magnocellular neurons, and in oligodendrocytes, whereas the glial cells showed strong cleaved-caspase-3 immunoreactivity. In summary our results suggest that NO plays a role in the demyelination and cell death in the taiep rat.
