Response of alfalfa under Salt Stress to the Application of Potassium Sulfate Nanoparticles

A greenhouse study was conducted to explore the effect of various rates of potassium sulfate (K2SO4) nanoparticles on alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) growth and physiological response under salt stress. One salt-tolerant genotype (Mesa-Sirsa) and one salt-sensitive genotype (Bulldog 505) were selected based on germination under salt and were planted in pots containing 2 kg of sand. The two genotypes were subjected to 0 and 6 dS·m-1 salt levels using CaCl2·2H2O: NaCl (2:1) mixed with Hoagland solution. Three K2SO4 nanoparticle treatments consisting of, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/10 of the potassium (K) level in full strength Hoagland solution (235 mg·L-1) were applied. Adding K2SO4 nanoparticles at the 1/8 level resulted in the highest shoot dry weight, relative yield, root length and root dry weight in both genotypes. The different rates of K2SO4 nanoparticles affected significantly Na/K ratio and the concentrations of Calcium (Ca), Phosphorus (P), Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn), and Zinc (Zn) in plant tissue. The application of K2SO4 nanoparticles at the 1/8 rate enhanced the plant’s physiological response to salt stress by reducing electrolyte leakage, increasing catalase and proline content, and increasing antioxidant enzymes, activity. These results suggest that the application of K nanoparticles may have better efficiency than conventional K fertilizers in providing adequate plant nutrition and overcoming the negative effects of salt stress in alfalfa.

Resistance to acid degradation,sorptivity,and setting time of geopolymer mortars

Application of an Artificial Neural Network Method for the Prediction of the Tube-Side Fouling Resistance in a Shell-And-Tube Heat Exchanger

The accumulation of undesirable deposits on the heat exchange surface represents a critical issue in industrial heat *** experimental measurements of the fouling is relatively difficult and,often,this method does not lead to precise *** overcome these problems,in the present study,a new approach based on an Artificial Neural Network(ANN)is used to predict the fouling resistance as a function of specific measurable variables in the phosphoric acid concentration *** include:the phosphoric acid inlet and outlet temperatures,the steam temperature,the phosphoric acid density,the phosphoric acid volume flow rate circulating in the *** statistical accuracy indices are employed simultaneously to justify the interrelation between these independent variables and the fouling resistance and to select the best training algorithm allowing the determination of the optimal number of hidden *** particular,the BFGS quasi-Newton back-propagation approach is found to be the most performing of the considered training ***,the best topology ANN for the shell and tube heat exchanger is obtained with a network consisting of one hidden layer with 13 neurons using a tangent sigmoid transfer function for the hidden and output *** model predicts the experimental values of the fouling resistance with AARD%=0.065,MSE=2.168×10^(−11),RMSE=4.656×10^(−6)and r^(2)=0.994.

Safety and efficacy of photodynamic therapy using BCECF-AM compared to mitomycin C in controlling post-operative fibrosis in a rabbit model of subscleral trabeculectomy

AIM： To evaluate the safety and efficacy of cellular photoablation using BCECF-AM [2, T-bis-（2-carboxyethyl） -5-（and-6）-carboxyfluorescein, acetoxymethyl ester mixed isomersl as a method to control postoperative fibrosis in subscleral trabeculectomy （SST） compared to mitomycin C （MMC） in a rabbit model. METHODS： A comparative prospective case-control animal study was conducted. Fourteen rabbits were subjected to SST with intraoperaUve use of wound modulating agents （MMC or BCECF-AM） of the right eye （study groups I and II respectively） and SST without use of intraoperative wound modulating agents for the left eye （control group II）. Two rabbits 4 eyes were considered as control group I with no surgical intervention. BCECF-AM was injected subconjunctivally 30min before surgery followed by intraoperative illumination with diffuse blue light for 10min. Antifibrotic efficacy was established by clinical response and histological examination. Clinical response was assessed by measuring intraocular pressure （lOP） at day 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21 postoperatively, Success was defined by 〉20.0% reduction in lOP from the preoperative values without anti-glaucoma medications. RESULTS： The mean percentage of reduction was 35.0% in the study group I with only one eye （14.3%） had 12.5% reduction. The mean percentage of reduction was 28.0% in the study group U with two eyes （28.6%） in study group II had 14.2% reduction each. Regarding the control group II, the mean percentage of reduction was 14.3% with 64.3% eyes had 〈20.0% reduction. There was a highly statistically significant difference between each of the study groups （right eyes） and the corresponding control group II （left eyes） as regards the mean postoperative lOP values started from day 5 in both study groups and this highly significant difference remained so till the end of the follow up period. Effect of Plant Growth Stimulants on alfalfa Response to Salt Stress

Salinity is a major impediment to crop production. This study was undertaken to compare the effect of seaweed extract, humic acid, and potassium sulfate nanoparticles in alleviating salt stress in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Seeds of ten alfalfa genotypes were germinated in a growth chamber at five salt concentrations (0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.00%). Salt concentrations above 1% reduced seed germination by more than 70% in most genotypes. One salt tolerant genotype (Mesa-Sirsa) and one salt sensitive (Bulldog 505) were selected and planted in greenhouse pots containing 2 kg of sand and subjected to two salt levels (10 and 15 dS· m-1). Four treatments consisting of 1) control (Hoagland solution, no-salt), 2) seaweed extract at 4 Kg·ha-1, 3) humic acid at 28 L· ha-1, and 4) potassium sulfate at 300 Kg· ha-1. Plant biomass was reduced under both salt concentrations in both genotypes, with a greater magnitude in the salt sensitive genotype. Application of seaweed extract resulted in higher relative water content and proline under both salt concentrations (10 and 15 dS·m-1) in the salt sensitive genotype, and lower electrolyte leakage in both salt tolerant and salt sensitive genotypes, under both salt concentrations. Seaweed extract also resulted in higher catalase and SOD activities in both genotypes under 10 dS·m-1. Catalase and SOD activities were associated with significantly (p all, seaweed extract seemed to have a positive effect in alleviating salt stress in alfalfa.

Biocomposite films prepared with melt compounding and film blowing have become a new trend in plastic research to deliver more eco-friendly *** acid(PLA)was melt compounded with minimally processed date palm leaf fiber(DPLF)and converted into films by blown film *** compounding was done in order to enhance the film mechanical properties in one hand,and to decrease the film production cost in the other *** this present study,a reference PLA film and films with 1%,2%,and 5%of DPLF(weight%)were produced with different process *** spatial variations in films thickness and lay flat width indicate that the addition of DPLF up to 2%enhances the bubble stability for the tested process ***,the composite with 5%DPLF shows nearly the same processability window as the neat *** structural and mechanical characterizations of films suggest a reinforcing effect of the PLA matrix up to 2%of fiber(with an optimum at 1%).Larger DPLF loading leads to depressed and more anisotropic mechanical properties,related to an increased density of defects at the fiber-PLA fragile interface and to a DPLF-induced enhanced PLA thermal degradation and amorphous phase orientation.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs)provide a reliable and energyefficient solution for data collection from the Narrowband Internet of Things(NB-IoT)***,the UAV’s deployment optimization,including locations of the UAV’s stop points,is a necessity to minimize the energy consumption of the UAV and the NB-IoT devices and also to conduct the data collection *** this regard,this paper proposes GainingSharing Knowledge(GSK)algorithm for optimizing the UAV’s *** GSK,the number of UAV’s stop points in the three-dimensional space is encapsulated into a single individual with a fixed length representing an entire *** superiority of using GSK in the tackled problem is verified by simulation in seven *** provides significant results in all seven scenarios compared with other four optimization algorithms used before with the same ***,the NB-IoT is proposed as the wireless communication technology between the UAV and IoT devices.

Introduction of longstanding complicated sulcus intraocular lens into the intact capsular bag

AIM:To propose a surgical technique that successfully reopened the empty and intact capsular bag after long periods of closure,with repositioning of the intraocular lens(IOL)from the ciliary sulcus into its preferred habitat inside the capsular ***:This is a case series,prospective,and interventional *** technique was first performed on an aphakic high myope with a closed posterior capsule for 18 ***,five patients with recurrently displaced sulcus IOLs for a range of 1 mo to 7 y were performed for the same *** surgery,identifying a"telltale white line"was an important landmark for detecting the site of major adhesions between the edge of the capsulorhexis and the posterior *** adhesions were freed using combined manual and viscoelastic dissection,followed by an easier freeing of adhesions along the whole capsular *** IOL was safely implanted,exchanged,or introduced from the sulcus into the fibrotic and closed capsular *** were followed up for a period ranging from 6 to 17 mo ***:all the patients experienced a remarkable improvement in their subjective *** lamp examination showed a postoperative centralized IOL in the *** follow up visits confirmed visual and IOL ***:This newly-introduced surgical technique facilitates the reopening of the empty yet intact capsular bag that has been closed by fibrotic proliferations,with secured implantation of the IOL inside the capsular *** with inadvertent implantation of IOLs into the ciliary sulcus,yet having an intact capsular bag,can benefit from this technique.
