Safety and efficacy of photodynamic therapy using BCECF-AM compared to mitomycin C in controlling post-operative fibrosis in a rabbit model of subscleral trabeculectomy

AIM： To evaluate the safety and efficacy of cellular photoablation using BCECF-AM [2, T-bis-（2-carboxyethyl） -5-（and-6）-carboxyfluorescein, acetoxymethyl ester mixed isomersl as a method to control postoperative fibrosis in subscleral trabeculectomy （SST） compared to mitomycin C （MMC） in a rabbit model. METHODS： A comparative prospective case-control animal study was conducted. Fourteen rabbits were subjected to SST with intraoperaUve use of wound modulating agents （MMC or BCECF-AM） of the right eye （study groups I and II respectively） and SST without use of intraoperative wound modulating agents for the left eye （control group II）. Two rabbits 4 eyes were considered as control group I with no surgical intervention. BCECF-AM was injected subconjunctivally 30min before surgery followed by intraoperative illumination with diffuse blue light for 10min. Antifibrotic efficacy was established by clinical response and histological examination. Clinical response was assessed by measuring intraocular pressure （lOP） at day 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21 postoperatively, Success was defined by 〉20.0% reduction in lOP from the preoperative values without anti-glaucoma medications. RESULTS： The mean percentage of reduction was 35.0% in the study group I with only one eye （14.3%） had 12.5% reduction. The mean percentage of reduction was 28.0% in the study group U with two eyes （28.6%） in study group II had 14.2% reduction each. Regarding the control group II, the mean percentage of reduction was 14.3% with 64.3% eyes had 〈20.0% reduction. There was a highly statistically significant difference between each of the study groups （right eyes） and the corresponding control group II （left eyes） as regards the mean postoperative lOP values started from day 5 in both study groups and this highly significant difference remained so till the end of the follow up period. Lipocalin: A Novel Diagnostic Marker for Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Chronic Liver Disease Patients in Egypt

Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most prevalent life-threatening human cancers with etiological factors chronic viral hepatitis B and C infections. Tumor cell dispersion relies on the loss of homotypic cell-cell adhesion. Invasion through basement membrane and interstitial extracellular matrix is another key event for metastatic progression, which requires the action of a series of proteolytic enzymes named matrix metalloproteinases, secreted by tumor cells that enhance tumor invasiveness and metastasis. TIMPs are dominant inhibitors of MMPs and able to control MMP-mediated ECM breakdown by binding active forms of MMPs. Lipocalin-2 is known as neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin promotematrix degradation and tumor progression. Aim: To evaluate the importance of lipocalin for diagnosis HCC in Egyptian chronic liver disease patients. Subjects and Methods: 50 patients and 25 controls. (G-1) 25 HCC on top of hepatitis C. (G-2) 25 hepatitis C. The following done: schistosoma antibodies, ASAM, LKM-1, ANA AKA and CBC. Hepatitis B surface antigen, Hepatitis C antibodies AFP, Cupper and zinc, Matrix metaloprotinase-9, TIMP-1 and Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin. Results: Median value of MMP-9 level in G-I (206 μg/L) is significantly higher than G-2 (100 μg/L) and G 3 (49 μg/L) p Conclusion: We elucidated predictive value for MMPs, TIMPs, and progression metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma. Liver cell impairment alters metabolism of trace metals as zinc and copper, with possible relationship of these changes to pathogenesis of chronic liver disease. Lipocalin-2 can be used as a future diagnostic marker with better sensitivity and specificity than MMP-9 for the progression of hepatocelluar carcinoma.

Biocomposite films prepared with melt compounding and film blowing have become a new trend in plastic research to deliver more eco-friendly *** acid(PLA)was melt compounded with minimally processed date palm leaf fiber(DPLF)and converted into films by blown film *** compounding was done in order to enhance the film mechanical properties in one hand,and to decrease the film production cost in the other *** this present study,a reference PLA film and films with 1%,2%,and 5%of DPLF(weight%)were produced with different process *** spatial variations in films thickness and lay flat width indicate that the addition of DPLF up to 2%enhances the bubble stability for the tested process ***,the composite with 5%DPLF shows nearly the same processability window as the neat *** structural and mechanical characterizations of films suggest a reinforcing effect of the PLA matrix up to 2%of fiber(with an optimum at 1%).Larger DPLF loading leads to depressed and more anisotropic mechanical properties,related to an increased density of defects at the fiber-PLA fragile interface and to a DPLF-induced enhanced PLA thermal degradation and amorphous phase orientation.

Efficient Fast Multiplication Free Integer Transformation for the 1-D DCT of the H.265 Standard

In this paper, efficient one-dimensional (1-D) fast integer transform algorithms of the DCT matrix for the H.265 stan-dard is proposed. Based on the symmetric property of the integer transform matrix and the matrix operations, which denote the row/column permutations and the matrix decompositions, along with using the dyadic symmetry modification on the standard matrix, the efficient fast 1-D integer transform algorithms are developed. Therefore, the computational complexities of the proposed fast integer transform are smaller than those of the direct method. In addition to computational complexity reduction one of the proposed algorithms provides transformation quality improvement, while the other provides more computational complexity reduction while maintaining almost the same transformation quality. With lower complexity and better transformation quality, the first proposed fast algorithm is suitable to accelerate the quality-demanding video coding computations. On the other hand, with the significant lower complexity, the second proposed fast algorithm is suitable to accelerate the video coding computations.

Response of Alfalfa under Salt Stress to the Application of Potassium Sulfate Nanoparticles

A greenhouse study was conducted to explore the effect of various rates of potassium sulfate (K2SO4) nanoparticles on alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) growth and physiological response under salt stress. One salt-tolerant genotype (Mesa-Sirsa) and one salt-sensitive genotype (Bulldog 505) were selected based on germination under salt and were planted in pots containing 2 kg of sand. The two genotypes were subjected to 0 and 6 dS·m-1 salt levels using CaCl2·2H2O: NaCl (2:1) mixed with Hoagland solution. Three K2SO4 nanoparticle treatments consisting of, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/10 of the potassium (K) level in full strength Hoagland solution (235 mg·L-1) were applied. Adding K2SO4 nanoparticles at the 1/8 level resulted in the highest shoot dry weight, relative yield, root length and root dry weight in both genotypes. The different rates of K2SO4 nanoparticles affected significantly Na/K ratio and the concentrations of Calcium (Ca), Phosphorus (P), Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn), and Zinc (Zn) in plant tissue. The application of K2SO4 nanoparticles at the 1/8 rate enhanced the plant’s physiological response to salt stress by reducing electrolyte leakage, increasing catalase and proline content, and increasing antioxidant enzymes, activity. These results suggest that the application of K nanoparticles may have better efficiency than conventional K fertilizers in providing adequate plant nutrition and overcoming the negative effects of salt stress in alfalfa.

SAT, a New Approach in Understanding and Treatment of Subclinical Endometritis in Dairy Cows

The aim of this work was to compare the use of local intrauterine moist heat infusion to intrauterine antibiotics infusion, for treatment of subclinical endometritis which affects reproduction and milk production. 42 repeat breeder cows were divided into 4 groups, group 1 was the untreated control (=10 cows). Group 2 (=10 cows) was treated by 50 ml of Oxytetracycline 5% intrauterine for three successive weeks. Group 3 (=10 cows) intrauterine infusion with 30 ml saline adding to them 10 ml Gentamycin 10% and 10 ml penicillin and streptomycin for three successive weeks. Group 4 (=12 cows) intrauterine infusion with 50 ml sterile boiling water (≈100°C) was applied directly to the uterus for only one time. Leukogram was done before and after treatment, it showed leukocytosis and neutrophilia in all the study groups. After treatment for 36 hours and one week, there were no significant changes in the leukogram results of groups 1, 2 and 3. While in Group 4 showed decreasing in numbers of leukocytes (11.92 ± 0.75) and neutrophils (0.87 ± 0.16) to its normal limits after 36 hours and one-week post-treatment. Our new method gave the highest cumulative pregnancy rate 83.3% while other groups using antibiotics or antibiotics with saline gave lower pregnancy rate 40% and 50% respectively (P > 0.001). We named this new treatment method “Samia-treat;SAT”. SAT is a whole new and effective treatment for cases of repeat breeder which are caused by SCE in dairy cows;it caused increase in reproductive performance and cumulative pregnancy rate without over use of antibiotics.

The Reaction of 2-Amino-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzo[<i>b</i>]thiophenes with Benzoyl-Isothiocyanate: Synthesis of Annulated Thiophene Derivatives and Their Antitumor Evaluations

The reaction of the tetrahydrobenzo[b]thiophene derivatives 1a,b with benzoylisothiocyanate (2) afforded the thiourea derivatives 3a,b. Cyclization of the latter products gave the annulated products 4a,b. Compounds 3a,b reacted with either hydrazine hydrate (5a) or phenyl hydrazine (5b) afforded compounds 7a-d which underwent cyclization for compounds 7a,c afforded compound 9. On the other hand compounds 4a,b reacted with either hydrazine hydrate (5a) or phenyl hydrazine (5b) afforded compounds 6a-d a second pathway was applied to synthesize compound 6c which underwent cyclization afforded compound 9. Also compounds 4a,b reacted with either phenacyl bromide (10) afforded compounds 11a,b or ethylchloroacetae (12) compounds 13a,b were produced. The latter products reacted with each hydrazine hydrate (5a) and phenyl hydrazine (5b) afforded compounds 14a-d. Their antitumor activities were tested using three different cell lines.

VLSI Implementation for Low Noise Power Efficiency Cellular Communication Systems

A low power model for Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) based cellular communication system is developed. The dynamic power is minimized by reducing the frequency of the Phase Lock Loop (PLL) after lock is established. The paper addresses the feasibility of lowering the clock frequency of the processing unit that models the PLL is addressed and modulator/demodulator functions of the system while maintaining synchronization with the memory unit and other peripherals. The system is simulated with Matlab considering various Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNR). For a given SNR, the minimum frequency required for the PLL to maintain lock is determined. The Matlab file is translated to VHDL code, simulated and synthesized with Mentor tools, and the layout then generated. Mach-Pa 5-V software system from Mentor tools is utilized to estimate the power consumed by the simulated device. A Xilinx file is also generated and downloaded for Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) implementation. A 50 MHz clock frequency of the processing unit was first considered and then lowered to 20 MHz for the low power study. Lowering the base and clock frequency resulted in near 30% reduction in power.

Fast Implementation of VC-1 with Modified Motion Estimation and Adaptive Block Transform

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) Standard 421M, commonly known as VC-1, is a state-of-the-art video compression format that provides highly competitive video quality, from very low through very high bit rates, at a reasonable computational complexity. First, this paper presents fast motion compensation methods. The four motion estimation methods examined are fast, three step search, varying diamond, and 2D logarithmic. These methods use less search points than the full spiral scan used in the VC-1 reference software, which allows for faster motion estimation. Second, this paper presents a residual texture based choice of the block size for the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). To determine the block size, data is examined after the residual texture has been calculated. This is in contrast to the VC-1 reference software, which uses calculations at the block level to determine the block size. The residual texture of each block is small and uniform, allowing for simplified block choices.
