The sustainability of rice production continues to be a subject of uncertainty and inquiry attributed to shifts in climatic conditions. In light of the impending climate change crisis and the high labor and water costs accompanying it, direct-seeded rice(DSR) is unquestionably one of the most practical solutions. Despite its resource and climate-friendly advantages, early maturing rice faces weed competitiveness and seedling establishment challenges. Resolving these issues is crucial for promoting its wider adoption among farmers, presenting it as a more effective sustainable rice cultivation method globally. Diverse traditional and contemporary breeding methods are employed to mitigate the limitations of the DSR approach, leveraging advanced techniques such as speed breeding and genome editing. Focusing on key traits like mesocotyl length elongation, early seedling vigor, root system architecture, and weed competitiveness holds promise for transformative improvements in DSR adaptation at a broader scale within farming communities. This review aims to summarize how these features contribute to increased crop production in DSR conditions and explore the research efforts focusing on enhancing DSR adaptation through these traits. Emphasizing the pivotal role of these game-changing traits in DSR adaptation, our analysis sheds light on their potential transformative impact and offers valuable insights for advancing DSR practices.

A comprehensive review of extrusion-based additive manufacturing processes for rapid production of metallic and ceramic parts

The extrusion-based additive manufacturing (EAM) technique is recently being employed for rapid production of metals and ceramic components. This technique involves extruding the metal or ceramic material in solid powder form mixed with a binder (i.e., an expendable viscous fluid), which is removed from the part after 3D printing. These technologies rely on the large design freedom allowed and the cost efficiency advantage over alternative metal additive manufacturing processes that are based on high energy beams, such as laser or electron beams. The EAM of metals and ceramics is not yet widespread, but published scientific and technical literature on it is rapidly growing. However, this literature is still less extensive than that on the fused deposition modeling (FDM) of plastics or the selective laser melting (SLM) of metals. This paper aims at filling this gap. FDM and powder injection molding are identified as preceding or enabling technologies for EAM. This paper systematically reviews all aspects of the feedstock EAM processes used for production of complex-shaped parts. The unique characteristics and advantages of these processes are also discussed with respect to materials and process steps. In addition, the key process parameters are explained to illustrate the suitability of the EAM process for diverse application domains.

Impact of surface roughness,surface charge,and temperature on sandstone wettability alteration by nanoparticles

The wettability of rocks affects the balance between capillary and viscous forces during multiphase flow through porous media,which in turn determines the fluid displacement process governing the recovery of oil from subsurface *** this work,the mechanism of wettability reversal of aged synthetic sandstones by metal oxide nanoparticles(SiO_(2) and Al_(2)O_(3))was investigated with particular focus on the impact of surface roughness,zeta potential,and *** synthetic surfaces were prepared from powders of Berea sandstone with known grain size ranges and their average roughness and roughness ratio were obtained from the 3D surface reconstruction of their microscope *** surface was subsequently aged in Permian crude oil to alter its *** surfaces with larger grain sizes and lower surface roughness ratios,the lower capillary pressure allowed stronger oil/surface interactions,leading to enhanced *** wettability alteration effects of nanoparticles were then examined through real-time top view imaging and dynamic front view contact angle *** negatively charged SiO_(2) nanoparticles rapidly reversed the sandstone wettability,indicating their potential applicability as wettability alteration *** contrast,the positively charged Al_(2)O_(3) counterpart caused no wettability *** mechanism of wettability alteration was further studied by microscale interaction analyses and nanoscale transmission electron *** nanoparticles were only a few nanometers large,the microscale roughness had a negligible effect on the wettability ***,the combined effect of van der Waals dispersion forces and surface-charge-induced electrostatic forces were recognized as the two key factors affecting the wettability of sandstone *** interactions may be curbed at elevated temperatures due to a decrease in the zeta potential and colloidal stability of the particles.

Systematic lossy error protection based on H.264/AVC redundant slices and flexible macroblock ordering

The authors propose a scheme for Systematic Lossy Error Protection (SLEP) of an H.264/AVC compressed video bit stream, using standard compatible features such as redundant slices, and flexible macroblock ordering. The systematic portion consists of a conventional H.264/AVC bit stream. For error resilience, an additional Wyner-Ziv bit stream is also transmitted. The Wyner-Ziv bit stream allows the decoding of a coarsely quantized description of the original video signal, and is efficiently gen- erated by using H.264/AVC redundant slices in conjunction with Reed-Solomon coding. The Wyner-Ziv bit stream is decoded in order to recover the redundant video descriptions, which are used in lieu of portions lost from the original video signal due to channel errors. SLEP allows the video quality to degrade gracefully with worsening channel conditions, and provides a flexible trade-off between the achieved error resilience and the coarseness of the redundant description. The performance can be improved especially for low motion video sequences, by applying SLEP to a region-of-interest in the video frame, using flexible macroblock ordering (FMO). Experimental results provided for two video transmission scenarios, demonstrate the advantages of SLEP over forward error correction (FEC) as an error resilience scheme.

Diagnosis of Crohn's disease in India where tuberculosis is widely prevalent

AIM:To define the parameters that positively predict diagnosis of Crohn's disease (CD) and differentiate it from gastrointestinal tuberculosis (GITB). METHODS:This prospective study over 3 years was carried out in the consecutive Indian patients with definite diagnosis of CD and equal numbers of patients with definite diagnosis of GITB. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, morphological and histological features were noted in all the patients. Serological tests such as p-ANCA, c-ANCA, IgA ASCA and IgG ASCA, were performed. Endoscopic biopsy and/or surgical tissue specimens were subjected to smear and culture for acid-fast bacilli (AFB) and tissue polymerase chain reaction for tuberculosis (TB PCR). Diagnosis of CD and GITB was based on the standard criteria. Data were analyzed using univariate Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression (MLR). RESULTS:The study is comprised of 26 patients with CD (age 36.6 ± 8.6 year, male:female, 16:10) and 26 patients with GITB (age 37.2 ± 9.6 year, male:female, 15:11). The following clinical variables between the two groups (CD vs TB) were significant in univariate analysis:duration of symptoms (58.1 ± 9.8 vs 7.2 ± 3.4 mo), diarrhoea (69.2% vs 34.6%), bleeding per rectum (30.7% vs 3.8%), fever (23.1% vs 69.2%), ascites (7.7% vs 34.6%) and extra-intestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease (61.5% vs 23.1%). Of these, all except ascites and extra-colonic manifestations were found statistically significant by MLR. Accuracy of predicting CD was 84.62% based on the fever, bleeding P/R, diarrhoea and duration of symptoms while it was 63.4% when histology was reported as inflammatory bowel disease and 42.3% when there was recurrence of disease after surgery. Accuracy of predicting GITB was 73.1% when there was co-existing pulmonary lesions and/or abdominal lymphadenopathy;75% when tuberculosis was reported in histology;63.4% when granuloma was found in histology;82.6% when TB PCR was positive;and 61.5% when smear and/ or c

LC and LC–MS/MS studies for the identification and characterization of degradation products of acebutolol

The aim of the present investigation was to demonstrate an approach involving use of liquid chromatography(LC) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(LC–MS) to separate, identify and characterize very small quantities of degradation products(DPs) of acebutolol without their isolation from the reaction mixtures. The drug was subjected to oxidative, hydrolytic, thermal and photolytic stress conditions as per International Conference on Harmonization(ICH) guideline Q1 A(R2). Among all the stress conditions the drug was found to be labile in hydrolytic(acidic & basic) and photolytic stress conditions, while it was stable in water-induced hydrolysis, oxidative and thermal stress conditions. A total of four degradation products were formed. A C18 column was employed for the separation of all the DPs on a gradient mode by using high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). All the DPs were characterized with the help of their fragmentation pattern and the masses obtained upon LC–MS/MS and MSnanalysis. All the hitherto unknown degradation products were identified as 1-(2-(2-hydroxy-3-(isopropylamino)propoxy)-5-(amino)phenyl)ethanone(DP-I), N-(4-(2-hydroxy-3-(isopropylamino)propoxy)-3-acetylphenyl)acrylamide(DP-II), 1-(2-(2-hydroxy-3-(isopropylamino)propoxy)-5-(hydroxymethylamino)phenyl)ethanone(DP-III) and 1-(6-(2-hydroxy-3-(isopropylamino)propoxy)-2,3-dihydro-2-propylbenzo[d]oxazol-5-yl)ethanone(DP-IV). Finally the in-silico carcinogenicity and hepatotoxicity predictions of the drug and all the DPs were performed by using toxicity prediction softwares viz., TOPKAT, LAZAR and Discovery Studio ADMET. The results of in-silico toxicity studies revealed that acebutolol(0.967) and DP-I(0.986) were found to be carcinogenic, while acebutolol(0.490) and DP-IV(0.437) were found to be hepatotoxic.

Oxidative coupling of methane over La-promoted CaO catalysts:Influence of precursors and catalyst preparation method

The oxidative coupling of methane to C2 hydrocarbons has been studied over a series of La-promoted CaO （La/Ca = 0.05） catalysts, prepared using different precursor salts for CaO and La2O3 （viz. acetates, carbonates, nitrates and hydroxides） and catalyst preparation methods （viz. physical mixing of precursors, co-precipitation using ammonium carbonate/sodium carbonate as a precipitating agent）, under different reaction conditions （temperature： 700-850 ℃, CH4/O2 ratio： 4.0 and 8.0, and GHSV： 51360 cm^3·g^-1·h^- 1）. The surface area and surface basicity/base strength distribution of the catalysts have also been investigated. The surface properties and catalytic activity/selectivity of the La-promoted CaO catalysts vary from catalyst to catalyst depending on the catalyst precursors used and catalyst preparation method. The basicity/base strength distribution is strongly influenced by the precursors （for CaO and La2O3） and catalyst preparation method. Basicity （total and strong basic sites measured in terms of CO2 chemisorbed at 50℃ and 500 ℃, respectively） observed for the catalyst prepared by co-precipitation method is higher than that of the catalysts prepared by physical mixing method. The catalysts prepared by the nitrates of La- and Ca- and co- precipitated by the solution of sodium carbonate and ammonium carbonate exhibit different catalytic performance in OCM. The finding that no direct relationship between the surface basicity and catalytic activity/selectivity in OCM exists indicates that basicity is not solely responsible for obtaining high selectivity to C2 hydrocarbons.

Influence of alkali metal doping on surface properties and catalytic activity/selectivity of CaO catalysts in oxidative coupling of methane

Surface properties （viz. surface area, basicity/base strength distribution, and crystal phases） of alkali metal doped CaO （alkali metal/Ca= 0.1 and 0.4） catalysts and their catalytic activity/selectivity in oxidative coupling of methane （OCM） to higher hydrocarbons at different reaction conditions （viz. temperature, 700 and 750 ℃; CH4/O2 ratio, 4.0 and 8.0 and space velocity, 5140-20550 cm^3 ·g^-1·h^-1） have been investigated. The influence of catalyst calcination temperature on the activity/selectivity has also been investigated. The surface properties （viz. surface area, basicity/base strength distribution） and catalytic activity/selectivity of the alkali metal doped CaO catalysts are strongly influenced by the alkali metal promoter and its concentration in the alkali metal doped CaO catalysts. An addition of alkali metal promoter to CaO results in a large decrease in the surface area but a large increase in the surface basicity （strong basic sites） and the C2＋ selectivity and yield of the catalysts in the OCM process. The activity and selectivity are strongly influenced by the catalyst calcination temperature. No direct relationship between surface basicity and catalytic activity/selectivity has been observed. Among the alkali metal doped CaO catalysts, Na-CaO （Na/Ca = 0.1, before calcination） catalyst （calcined at 750 ℃）, showed best performance （C2＋ selectivity of 68.8% with 24.7% methane conversion）, whereas the poorest performance was shown by the Rb-CaO catalyst in the OCM process.

Lentil straw(Lens culinaris): An alternative and nutritious feed resource for kids

The scarcity of feed resources with the continuously increasing cost of usual animal feeds urgently demands searching some alternate feeds for ruminants. In this study, Barberi male kids were divided into4 groups of 5 kids(body weight 17.5 ± 1.8 kg) in each group, and ad libitum fed lentil straw(Lens culinaris;LS), LS based total mixed ration(LSTMR), urea ammoniated LS(ALS) or ALS based total mixed ration(ALSTMR) for a period of 28 days. Results showed LS was a superior feed(CP, 9.2%) for kids, but having quite high crude fibre(CF; 39.6%) and Ca:P ratio(10:1). Urea ammoniation of LS was helpful for increasing the digestible crude protein(DCP)(P < 0.01), nitrogen-free extract(NFE) and total digestible nutrients(TDN) with reduction of CF content. Urea mmoniation also improved the digestibility of neutral and acid detergent fibre(P < 0.01), but its effect on CP digestibility was negative(P < 0.05). Dry matter(DM), DCP and TDN intakes(per kg W0.75) were also improved(P < 0.01) in the kids fed ALS. Negative growth rate and nitrogen(N) balance(-33.8 and -1.4 g/day, respectively) in kids fed LS became positive(46.9 and 2.0 g/day, respectively) when ALS was used in the diets of kids. Feeding of ALS also increased(P < 0.01) the total N and ammonia N content of strained rumen liquor(SRL). Use of straw(LS or ALS) in TMR increased the digestibility of DM, organic matter and NFE(P < 0.01), intake of energy, as well as total volatile fatty acids concentration(P < 0.01) in the SRL. The present study suggested that optimum performance of kids may be achieved using either ALS alone or TMR with LS or ALS.
