Introduction: Pulmona.y symptoms of COVID-19 infection ra.ge from a.ymptoma.ic infection to severe pneumonia. Pa.hogenesis a.d severity of symptoms were found to be rela.ed to the body’s immune response. Objectives: Ferritin a.d D-Dimer in COVID-19 confirmed ca.es ca. predict lung injury a.d possible poor pa.ient prognosis. Ma.eria.s a.d Methods: Pa.ients who ha. been a.mitted to Dr. Sula.ma. a.ha.ib-a.rya. Hospita. with positive COVID-19 polymera.e cha.n rea.tion (PCR) tests between Ma.ch 2020 a.d December 2021 were studied for blood ferritin a.d D-Dimer levels in rela.ion to pulmona.y ra.iologica. findings. Results: a.tota. of 494 ca.es a.e included in this study. Ma.e pa.ients represent 74.1% of the ca.es, a.d the mea. a.e is 51.68 ± 13.37 yea.s. Increa.ed a.e, ferritin, D-Dimer levels, a.d respira.ory symptoms a.e fa.tors tha. showed a.sta.istica.ly significa.t a.socia.ion with positive computed tomogra.hy (CT) findings. Receiver opera.or cha.a.teristic curve (ROC) showed tha. ferritin ha. a.higher ca.a.ility tha. D-Dimer to detect CT findings a.d tha. both a.e equa. in predicting possible pa.ient morta.ity. Suggested cutoff va.ues for Ferritin > 336 ng/mL, with 78.21% sensitivity a.d 86.42% specificity a.d for D-Dimer > 0.55 mg/L FEU, with sensitivity of 74.82% a.d specificity of 75.31%. For morta.ity, the suggested cutoff point for ferritin is >864.6 ng/mL, which gives a.sensitivity of 80.26 a.d a.specificity of 64.83%. The suggested cutoff point for D-Dimer is >1.46 mg/L FEU, which gives a.sensitivity of 65.79% a.d a.specificity of 78.23%. Conclusion: La.ora.ory ma.kers such a. Ferritin a.d D-Dimer ca. be a. a.cura.e predictor of lung injury in COVID-19 pa.ients a.d their increa.ed va.ues ca. predict the poor pa.ient prognosis a.d possible morta.ity if a.gressive hospita. ca.e is not provided.

Next Genera.ion Sequencing in Oncologica. Dia.nostics: Hype or Hope?

The understa.ding of how genetic a.d epigenetic fa.tors influence tumorigenesis, progression a.d inva.ion, is va.tly growing since new technologies a.low the a.a.ysis of the functiona. genome na.ely the exome, the tra.scriptome a.d the epigenome, besides ena.ling genome-wide a.sessment of genetic va.ia.ions. With the a.vent of new drugs tha. a.e indica.ed tissue a.nostic, depending on certa.n muta.ions, there is a.growing dema.d for fa.t a.d cost-effective genetic dia.nosis. The method in focus tha. a.rea.y beca.e a. indispensa.le tool in vira. dia.nosis is next-genera.ion sequencing (NGS). This a.proa.h a.lows sequencing of litera.ly every DNa.molecule in the sa.ple a.d ca. either be used to a.sess numerous genetic ma.kers of one pa.ient a. a.time, or to a.sess fewer ma.kers of ma.y pa.ients in pa.a.lel, which reduces costs. We submitted 23 sa.ples of different tumor entities to four dia.nostic compa.ies with different a.a.ysis profiles. The results a. disclosed a.d discussed in this report indica.e tha. so fa., the ma.n a.plica.ion of NGS is ra.her in ca.cer resea.ch tha. in dia.nosis, a. none of the reports ha. a.rea. impa.t on the thera.eutic scheme. We a.e perfectly a.a.e tha. such a.sma.l cohort ca.not be genera.ized, but considering the costs vs. benefits, NGS should be enga.ed upon a.very stringent eva.ua.ion only. However, in ca.es where obta.ning a.tissue biopsy is impossible or unfa.ora.le, a.a.ysis of liquid biopsy by NGS provides a.vita. a.terna.ive.
