Genetic Association of Interferon Gamma Induced Protein-10 (IP-10), <i>CXCL-</i>10 Gene Polymorphisms with TB Pleurisy Susceptibility in South Indian Population

CXCL-10 known as Interferon gamma-induced protein 10 (IP-10) or small-inducible cytokine 10 is a 8.7 kDa protein, which is secreted in response to IFN-γ by monocytes, endothelial cells and fi-broblasts. It has chemo-attraction for monocytes/macrophages, T cells, NK cells and dendritic cells in promotion of T cell adhesion to endothelial cells. In the present study, we investigated whether polymorphisms in CXCL-10 gene have any role in the manifestation of Tuberculous (TB) pleurisy. Two SNPs in CXCL-10 promoter region (﹣1447A > G and ﹣135G > A) were genotyped in patients with TB Pleurisy (n = 186), Pulmonary TB patients (n = 159) and healthy controls (n = 205) by PCR-RFLP. Disease associations were statistically analyzed by Fisher exact test. At the ﹣135G > A position, the frequencies of genotype GA and allele G were significantly high in TB pleurisy patients compared to healthy controls. While the frequencies of genotype AA and allele A were significantly low in TB pleurisy patients compared to healthy controls. The frequency of haplotype A-G with the combination of 1447A > G and ﹣135G > A was significantly high in TB pleurisy. Our results reveal that genotype GA and allele G at ﹣135G > A position were strongly associated with susceptibility to tuberculous pleurisy. The GA genotype may be a useful genetic marker for early detection of the disease in high risk individuals.

Speed–density functional relationship for heterogeneous traffic data: a statistical and theoretical investigation

This study is an attempt to establish a suitable speed–density functional relationship for heterogeneous traffic on urban arterials. The model must reproduce the traffic behaviour on traffic stream and satisfy all static and dynamic properties of speed–flow–density relationships. As a first attempt for Indian traffic condition, two behavioural parameters, namely the kinematic wave speed at jam(Cj) and a proposed saturation flow(k), are estimated using empirical observations. The parameter Cjis estimated by developing a relationship between driver reaction time and vehicle position in the queue at the signalised intersection. Functional parameters are estimated using Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm implemented in the R statistical *** measures such as root mean squared error, average relative error and cumulative residual plots are used for assessing models fitness. We set out several static and dynamic properties of the flow–speed–density relationships to evaluate the models, and these properties equally hold good for both homogenous and heterogeneous traffic *** the numerical analysis, it is found that very few models replicate empirical speed–density data traffic ***, none of the existing functional forms satisfy all the properties. To overcome the shortcomings, we proposed two new speed–density functional forms. The uniqueness of these models is that they satisfy both numerical accuracy and the properties of fundamental diagram. These new forms would certainly improve the modelling accuracy, especially in dynamic traffic studies when coupling with dynamic speed equations.

Comparative evaluation of roundabout capacities under heterogeneous traffic conditions

In heterogeneous traffic conditions, roundabout capacity is described by vehicle and driver characteristics which are different from traffic conditions in homogeneous conditions. In the present study, the capacity of the roundabout is determined using various capacity formulas such as gap acceptance models given by Highway Capacity Manual 2010 （US）, German model （2001）; empirical regression models given by TRRL （UK） and weaving models given by IRC： 65-1976 （India）. In addition, microscopic simulation model like VISSIM （PTV Ger- many） is also used to derive capacity values. Unlike the other capacity estimation models, VISSIM is helpful in estimating capacity values using geometric and driver characteristics and it can also simulate heterogeneous traffic condition accurately. Capacity is estimated after calibrating the simulation model （VISSIM） developed for the roundabout. This is achieved by incorporating different vehicle classes to represent the heterogeneous traffic environment, driver gap acceptance, and lane changeparameters. All the required inputs were extracted from the video using semi-automatic data collection methods. Data are used for the estimation of capacity values from dif- ferent methods mentioned above and for the calibration and validation of simulation model. The capacity values esti- mated form various formulas except German model are distinctly different from the field values and they are either overestimating or underestimating. Analysis of these observations reveals that the capacity values from VISSIM and German models are nearly matching with the field capacity.

The magnesium/lithium hybrid batteries(MLHBs)featuring dendrite-less deposition with Mg anode and Li-storage cathode are a promising alternative to Li-ion batteries for large-scale energy ***,their limited energy density limits their practical *** improve this,beyond the commonly proposed intercalation compounds,high-capacity conversion-type cathodes based on heterostructures of tin sulphide-molybdenum disulphide(SnS_(2)-MoS_(2))are proposed in this *** SnS_(2) is already a promising high-capacity electrode material for multivalent batteries and undergoes conversion reactions during the ion storage *** introduction of S-deficient MoS_(2) enhances the reversibility of SnS_(2) in the conversion reaction via strong polysulfide anchoring and catalytic *** results show that the SnS_(2)-MoS_(2) electrode achieves a high charge capacity of~600 mAhg^(-1) at 50mAg^(-1) and an excellent rate capability of 240mAhg^(-1) at 1000mAhg^(-1) with a negligible capacity fading rate of 0.063%per cycle across 1000 *** results highlight a new direction toward designing 2D heterostructures as high-capacity cathodes beyond intercalation-type cathodes for multivalent-ion batteries.

Double-sided friction stir welding of Nitronic-40 stainless steel for application in tokamak devices

Nitrogen containing austenitic stainless steels(N-ASS)are widely utilized to fabricate various structural components in tokamak type fusion reactors owing to their suitable mechanical and functional *** components are exposed to a range of temperatures(4-500 K)and interact closely with the magnetic fields that are used to control and contain the plasma within the tokamak ***-40(N40)or XM-11 stainless steel is one such N-ASS used for fabricating structural components in the mag-netic and vacuum vessel systems in tokamak *** of most of the larger components in the magnetic and vacuum vessel systems typically involves some type of fusion-based welding *** study presents a double-sided friction stir welding(FSW)approach as an alternative to fusion welding processes to join 12 mm thick N40 plates to obtain joints with a low fraction ofδferrite(a detrimen-tal ferromagnetic phase),high joint efficiency,no sensitization and loss of hardness in the heat affected zone,and minimal nitrogen desorption from the weld *** double-sided FSW approach yielded superior weldments when compared to similar joints accomplished by fusion welding for application in tokamak devices.

Influence of Nanocrystalline Structure on Wear and Corrosion Behavior of Al-SiC<sub>P</sub>Composite

Functionally graded (FG) Al-SiCP composites fabricated via centrifugal casting are widely used in automobile components particularly a brake rotor disc be-cause of its high SiC fraction at the outer periphery. However, when operated in corrosive environment like road deicing salts the disc is highly sensitive to the corrosion due to high SiC fraction. But, the nanocrystalline (NC) structured surfaces synthesized by severe plastic deformation (SPD) method have excel-lent wear and corrosion resistance at the surface. Therefore, shot peening (SP) as a SPD method conducted on one side of the stir casted FG Al composite having 10 wt% SiCP constant reinforcement in order to create NC structured surface. The SP treatment continued for 70 s and 140 s durations. Thereafter, the surface characteristics of the composite before and after SP were estimated by XRD and then the composites were tested by wear and corrosion tests. The results revealed that the SP for 140 s duration favors the induction of hardened layer, higher grain refinement (NC structure) and dislocation density which promotes the occurrence of high surface hardness, thus significantly improving its wear properties. However, higher dislocation density resulted from longer duration shown deterioration to the corrosion resistance. Whereas, the attained degree of NC structure is more pronounced over dislocation density resulted after 70 s SP duration, thereby composite showed excellent corrosion re-sistance. Thus, the composite with 70 s duration possessed excellent corrosion and relatively good wear properties too.

Biodegradable polymer stents vs second generation drug eluting stents:A meta-analysis and systematic review of randomized controlled trials

AIM: To evaluate the premise, that biodegradable polymer drug eluting stents(BD-DES) could improve clinical outcomes compared to second generation permanent polymer drug eluting stents(PP-DES), we pooled the data from all the available randomized control trials(RCT) comparing the clinical performance of both these ***: A systematic literature search of Pub Med, Cochrane, Google scholar databases, EMBASE, MEDLINE and SCOPUS was performed during time period of January 2001 to April 2015 for RCT and comparing safety and efficacy of BD-DES vs second generation PP-DES. The primary outcomes of interest were definite stent thrombosis, target lesion revascularization, myocardial infarction, cardiac deaths and total deaths during the study period. RESULTS: A total of 11 RCT's with a total of 12644 patients were included in the meta-analysis, with 6598 patients in BD-DES vs 6046 patients in second generation PP-DES. The mean follow up period was 16 mo. Pooled analysis showed non-inferiority of BD-DES, comparing events of stent thrombosis(OR = 1.42, 95%CI: 0.79-2.52, P = 0.24), target lesion revascularization(OR = 0.99, 95%CI: 0.84-1.17, P = 0.92), myocardial infarction(OR = 1.06, 95%CI: 0.86-1.29, P = 0.92), cardiac deaths(OR = 1.07, 95%CI 0.82-1.41, P = 0.94) and total deaths(OR = 0.96, 95%CI: 0.80-1.17, P = 0.71).CONCLUSION: BD-DES, when compared to second generation PP-DES, showed no significant advantage and the outcomes were comparable between both the groups.
