Estrus Synchronization and Artificial Insemination with Fresh and Chilled Semen in Assaf Ewes

This paper aims to study the efficiency of two short-term progestagen (FGA vs. MAP) + eCG treatments in estrus synchronization and artificial insemination (AI) with fresh or chilled semen in Assaf ewes fertility rate. All ewes received a subcutaneous implant of exogenous melatonin 45 days before been treated with short-term progestagens + eCG. By June 1st, ewes were divided in two groups: half was treated with an intravaginal sponge impregnated with 20 mg of FGA and the other half with an intravaginal sponge impregnated with 60 mg of MAP. Progestagen treatments lasted for 6 days. At sponge withdraw, all ewes were injected with 750 IU of eCG. Ovarian activity was assessed by plasmatic progesterone levels before and after progestagens + eCG treatment. Semen was collected by electro ejaculation and extended with Andromed? or OviXcell?. AI was performed 55 hours after eCG administration with fresh or chilled semen. During AI several factors were assessed: vagina mucosa color and lubrication, external cervical Os type, cervical mucous viscosity, semen deposition place and seminal cervix outflow. Semen was deposited as deep as possible without distress or trauma cervix mucosa. All Assaf ewes presented cyclic activity before progestagen + eCG treatments (2nd fortnight of May). Short-term progestagen + eCG treatments were equally efficient (100.0%). About 76.5% of Assaf ewes were pregnant 41 days after AI. Fertility rate was influenced by external Os type, semen deposition place and seminal cervix outflow. However, this rate was not conditioned by vaginal color or lubrication, cervical mucus viscosity, semen preservation technic and semen extender.

Thoracic Unilateral Spinal Cord Syndrome Following Neuraxial Anaesthesia for Periprosthetic Knee Fracture: A Case Report

Neuraxial anaesthesia is widely used in surgical procedures;overall, epidural and intrathecal techniques. Nevertheless, several outcomes should be considered. The incidence of neurologic complications after neuraxial anaesthesia is not perfectly clear (0% - 0.08%), although there are several described cases of spinal cord ischemia. We present a case of thoracic unilateral spinal cord syndrome following lumbar spinal anaesthesia for periprosthetic knee fracture. Our patient suffered monoparesis in her left lower limb as well as decreasing of muscle strength and loss of tendon reflexes. The MNR showed left hyperintense intra-cord images from T7 to T12 attributed to spinal cord oedema and a lineal hypointensity related to minimal haematic component. What made this case surprising was the fact that spinal anaesthesia was performed between L3 and L4 and the patient did not suffer paraesthesia associated with local anaesthetic injection. She was treated with glucocorticoids, gabapentin and amitriptyline. She also was checked by physical rehabilitators, neurologists and Pain Unit physicians. We have found another case reported in the literature about thoracic cord injury after lumbar spinal puncture. In this paper, we report possible aetiologies according to a review and neurological evolution of the patient seven months later.

Cytotoxic Effect of Methanol Extracts and Partitions of Two Mexican Desert Plants against the Murine Lymphoma L5178Y-R

Pachycereus marginatus (DC.) Britton & Rose and Ibervillea sonorae (S. Watson) Greene have been used in the Mexican traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases, including cancer. The present study aims to investigate the cytotoxic activity of these plants against a murine lymphoma. Soxhlet extraction of dried and powdered plant material was performed with methanol. Also, a further partitioning of these methanolic extracts with hexane and ethyl acetate was achieved. The in vitro cytotoxic activity against the murine lymphoma L5178Y-R cell line was assessed via the colorimetric MTT assay. The methanol extract from P. marginatus exhibited high cytotoxic activity (up to 94%) at concentrations ranging from 3.9 to 500 μg/mL;however, hexane and ethyl acetate partitions from this methanolic extract showed lower but significant (p < 0.05) concentration-dependent cytotoxicity (hexane partition up to 94% at 500 μg/mL;ethyl acetate partition up to 94% at 65.5 μg/mL). The methanolic extract and partitions derived from I. sonorae also showed significant (p < 0.05) and concentration-dependent cytotoxicity against L5178Y-R cells at concentrations ranging from 7.81 to 500 μg/mL (methanolic extract up to 63% at 500 μg/mL;hexane partition up to 76% at 250 μg/mL;ethyl acetate partition up to 73% at 500 μg/mL). These results demonstrate that the methanol extracts and partitions from P. marginatus and I. sonorae possess significant cytotoxic activity against the murine lymphoma L5178Y-R and validate the ethnobotanical use of these plants for the treatment of diseases consistent with cancer symptomatology. Previous scientific reports describe the isolation of isoquinoline alkaloids of P. marginatus as well as cucurbitacins from I. sonorae, phytochemicals that could be responsible for their observed cytotoxic activity in this research. Relationship of Polymorphisms of Glutathione S-Transferase GSTT1 and GSTM1 With the Response to Chemotherapy In Mexican Women with Advanced Breast Cancer

Introduction: Breast cancer is a common disease diagnosed in Mexican women and the first leading cause of death [1]. Heterogeneity in patients’ response to treatment is consistently observed across populations. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are involved in the metabolism of environmental carcinogens, reactive oxygen species and chemotherapeutic agents by catalyzing the glutathione with electrophilic compounds. The deletion of GSTT1 and GSTM1 genes result in loss of enzyme activity. A few studies evaluated the response to treatment and the polymorphisms of GSTT1 and GSTM1. The aim of this work is to make the association of the null polymorphisms of GSTT1 and GSTM1 with the response to chemotherapy basically doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide. Methods: The genotyping of thirty patients with breast cancer was made with the Polymerase chain reaction, to identify the polymorphisms of GSTT1 and GSTM1. We determine the status of Her-2 neu, estrogen and progesterone receptors, then the response to treatment was made with an ultrasound and pathological data. We made the association with the χi2 statistics using a p≤0.05. Results: Using the Sigma Stat 3.5 program and the chi-squared analysis, we do not observe a significant association with the GSTT1+/GSTM1+, GSTT1-/GSTM1+ and GSTT1-/GSTM1-polymorphisms and the better or worse response to cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin. With the Her-2 neu, estrogen and progesterone receptors status, we neither found an association with the response to the therapy. Conclusion: This study suggests that GSTT1 and GSTM1 polymorphisms have no statistical significance between the genotype of women with advanced breast cancer and the response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, but we can see a clear tendency toward better response with the null genotype.

Detection of Helicobacter pylori resistance to clarithromycin and fluoroquinolones in Brazil:A national survey

AIM To evaluate bacterial resistance to clarithromycin and fluoroquinolones in Brazil using molecular *** The primary antibiotic resistance rates of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) were determined from November 2012 to March 2015 in the Southern,South-Eastern,Northern,North-Eastern,and Central-Western regions of Brazil. Four hundred ninety H. pylori patients [66% female,mean age 43 years(range: 18-79)] who had never been previously treated for this infection were enrolled. All patients underwent gastroscopy with antrum and corpus biopsies and molecular testing using Geno Type Helico DR(Hain Life Science,Germany). This test was performed to detect the presence of H. pylori and to identify point mutations in the genes responsible for clarithromycin and fluoroquinolone resistance. The molecular procedure was divided into three steps: DNA extraction from the biopsies,multiplex amplification,and reverse hybridization. RESULTS Clarithromycin resistance was found in 83(16.9%) patients,and fluoroquinolone resistance was found in 66(13.5%) patients. There was no statistical difference in resistance to either clarithromycin or fluoroquinolones(P = 0.55 and P = 0.06,respectively) among the different regions of Brazil. Dual resistance to clarithromycin and fluoroquinolones was found in 4.3%(21/490) of patients. The A2147 G mutation was present in 90.4%(75/83),A2146 G in 16.9%(14/83) and A2146 C in 3.6%(3/83) of clarithromycin-resistant patients. In 10.8%(9/83) of clarithromycin-resistant samples,more than 01 mutation in the 23 S r RNA gene was noticed. In fluoroquinolone-resistant samples,37.9%(25/66) showed mutations not specified by the Geno Type Helico DR test. D91 N mutation was observed in 34.8%(23/66),D91 G in 18.1%(12/66),N87 K in 16.6%(11/66) and D91 Y in 13.6%(9/66) of cases. Among fluoroquinolone-resistant samples,37.9%(25/66) showed mutations not specified by the Geno Type Helico DR test. CONCLUSION The H. pylori clarithromycin resistance rate in Brazil is

Objective: To determine associations between standardized prevalence ratios of Metabolic Syndrome (MS), High Blood Pressure (HBP), and Obesity (O) with structural factors in ecuadorian population aged 20 to 59. Methods: An ecological study was conducted through data from the Ecuador’s National Health and Nutrition Survey 2013-2014, and National Census. Standardized prevalence ratio (SPR) variability was analyzed with Poisson multiple regression models (adjusted Relative Risk). Results: The SPR variability for the three diseases was associated with non-affiliation to social security, and inversely related to lower urbanization. HBP and O were associated with functional illiteracy and higher rates of primary care physicians/1000 inhabitants. HBP and MS were related to poor housing. Conclusions: Policies of non-communicable chronic diseases control in ecological transition countries need to take structural variations into account.

The genus Pterostemon Schauer (Iteaceae), is a group of three species restricted in distribution to Mexico. It includes: Pterostemon mexicanus Schauer, P. rotundifolius Ramírez, and P. bravoanus J. Jiménez-Ram. & Martínez Gordillo. On the basis of field observations and herbarium specimens, we review the morphology (vegetative and reproductive), and distribution to give an updated taxonomic treatment for the genus. Additionally the utility of morphological characters is evaluated for taxomic use, and detailed taxonomic descriptions and ecological associations are given for each species.

背景与目的放射治疗的技术进步使兼顾剂量递增和提升膀胱和直肠保留成为可能。然而,对于局限性前列腺癌的最佳辐射剂量分割方案尚不清楚。实验室和临床证据表明,低分割可提高放疗的治疗率。在此报道我们医院采用中度低分割调强放疗(intensity?modulated radiotherapy,IMRT)和直肠内球囊对局限性前列腺癌患者的治疗结局,重点关注患者的长期生化控制和治疗相关不良事件。方法从1997年1月到2004年4月,596例c T1–T3前列腺癌患者使用带直肠内球囊的中度低分割方案(76.70 Gy,2.19 Gy/次)进行IMRT。根据D'Amico分类低风险、中风险或高风险患者分别226(37.9%)例、264(44.3%)例和106(17.8%)例。大多数中、高风险患者接受雄激素剥夺治疗。使用2005年Phoenix标准评估无生化复发生存(biochemical relapse?freeSurvival,bRFS),并使用Kaplan?Meier法进行估算。结果中位随访时间为62个月。总的5年bRFS和10年bRFS率分别为92.7%和87.7%。低风险、中风险和高风险患者的5年bRFS率分别为96.9%、93.3%和82.0%,10年bRFS率分别为91.4%、89.3%和76.2%。前列腺特异性抗原、Gleason评分和T分期是bRFS的重要预测因子(均P<0.01)。重度(≥3级)不良事件的5年发生率非常低:胃肠道不良事件和泌尿生殖系统不良事件的发生率分别为1.2%和1.1%。结论中度低分割IMRT后的长期结局令人鼓舞。中度低分割是治疗局限性前列腺癌的安全、有效的替代方案。

BACKGROUND Ampullary adenocarcinoma(AAC)is a rare neoplasm that accounts for only 0.2%of all gastrointestinal *** incidence rate is lower than 6 cases per million *** prognostic factors have been described for AAC and are associated with a wide range of survival ***,these studies have been exclusively conducted in patients originating from Asian,European,and North American *** To evaluate the histopathologic predictors of overall survival(OS)in South American patients with AAC treated with curative pancreaticoduodenectomy(PD).METHODS We analyzed retrospective data from 83 AAC patients who underwent curative(R0)PD at the National Cancer Institute of Peru between January 2010 and October 2020 to identify histopathologic predictors of *** Sixty-nine percent of patients had developed intestinal-type AAC(69%),23%had pancreatobiliary-type AAC,and 8%had other ***-one percent of patients were classified as Stage I,according to the AJCC 8 th *** occurred primarily in the liver(n=8),peritoneum(n=4),and lung(n=4).Statistical analyses indicated that T3 tumour stage[hazard ratio(HR)of 6.4,95%confidence interval(CI)of 2.5-16.3,P<0.001],lymph node metastasis(HR:4.5,95%CI:1.8-11.3,P=0.001),and pancreatobiliary type(HR:2.7,95%CI:1.2-6.2,P=0.025)were independent predictors of *** Extended tumour stage(T3),pancreatobiliary type,and positive lymph node metastasis represent independent predictors of a lower OS rate in South American AAC patients who underwent curative PD.
