Landscaping and performance of some aesthetic plant species in hot, arid conditions of India

Establishment of ornamental and aesthetic plants in hot, arid conditions of India is difficult due to the prevailing climatic, edaphic and biotic factors. Effect of turfgrass on the growth of ornamental plants in hot arid conditions has not been studied so far anywhere in the world. A study was conducted on the campus of Arid Forest Research Institute, Jodhpur, India to assess the performance of a few ornamental plant spe- cies in combination with turfgrass and without turfgrass with respect to different soil tilling intervals. Growth of plants was better with turfgrass than without turfgrass. We suggest adopting a soil tilling interval of 30 days to achieve optimum growth of ornamental plant species in terms of height and crown diameter. Our results can help reduce labor costs and achieving better landscapes in fewer days in hot urban conditions of Indian sub continent.

Objective:To evaluate the diagnostic pharmacognostical characters of Costus speciosus(aerial parts)along with their physico-chemical parameters and fluorosence ***:The pharmacognostical characters were determined in terms of macroscopy,microscopy,powder microscopy,leaf constant,fluorescence analysis and preliminary phytochemical ***:The findings of macroscopy revealed that leaves elliptic to oblong or oblong-lancoelate,thick,spirally arranged,with stem clasping sheaths up to 4 cm,flowers large,white,conelike terminal spikes,with bright red *** section of leaflet showed the presence of cuticularised epidermis with polygonal cells on adaxial surface and bluntly angled cells on abaxial surface of lamina,mesophyll cells differentiated in to single layered palisade cells on each surface and 2-3 layered spongy parenchyma,unicellular and uniseriate multicellular covering trichomes,paracytic stomata and vascular bundles surrounded by sclerenchymatous multicellular *** phytochemical screening exhibited the presence of various phytochemical groups like alkaloids,glycosides,steroids,phenolic ***,the leaf constants,powder microscopy and fluorescence characteristics indicated outstanding results from this investigation Conclusions:Various pharmacognostical and physico-chemical parameters have pivotal roles in identification,authentication and establishment of quality parameters of the species.

Effect of Foundation and Non-Homogeneity on the Vibrations of Polar Orthotropic Parabolically Tapered Circular Plates

The effect of Pasternak foundation and non-homogenity on the axisymmetric vibrations of polar orthotropic parabolically varying tapered circular plates has been analyzed on the basis of classical plate theory. Ritz method has been used to find the numerical solution of the specified problem. The efficiency of the Ritz method depends on the choice of basis function based upon deflection of polar orthotropic plates. The effects of different plate parameters viz. elastic foundation, non-homogeneity, taper parameter and that of orthotropy on fundamental, second and third mode of vibration have been studied for clamped and simply-supported boundary conditions. Mode shapes for specified plates have been drawn for both the boundary conditions. Convergence and comparison studies have been carried out for specified plates.

Nepeta cataria L., commonly known as catmint or catnip, belongs to the family “Lamiaceae” and is indigenous to Europe and Asia. The essential oil of this species is known for the richness and diversity of nepetalactones (NPL) which are used as mosquito/insect repellents in perfumery and cosmetic industries. Reports on Indian catmint germplasm are very meager and warrants exploration of its commercial potential as a natural, non-toxic source of insect repellents. With this objective, commercial open-pollinated seeds of catmint collected from its native, temperate habitat in Himalayas were introduced in the tropical plains. Subsequent to adaptation to a new zone we were able to isolate nineteen individual plants based on plant growth. Hydrodistillation of the fresh herb yielded essential oil in the range of 0.01% to 0.2%. Gas Chromatography (GC) and GC-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses of the oil revealed the dominance of monoterpene hydrocarbon, namely, 4aα,7α,7aα NPL (1) isomer (84%). The other two isomers of nepetalactone, 4aα,7α,7aβ NPL (2) and 4aα,7β,7aα NPL (3) were also present, although in very less amounts (1.0% and 1.6%, respectively). 目的:观察白内障合并翼状胬肉患者行联合手术后的疗效。方法:对22例(平均年龄:59.05±8.70岁)并发白内障和翼状胬肉(长度2-5mm)患者进行前瞻性单中心研究,随访时间为3mo~1a。测定术前和术后3mo的平均角膜曲率(Kmean)、平均散光和最佳矫正视力(LogMAR)。观察术前角膜曲率和翼状胬肉大小与预测误差的关系。结果:共18例(81.8%)患者PE1.00D的患者。手术前后眼轴长度无差异(P=0.77)。Kmean从术前42.994±1.536增加到术后43.324±1.479(P=0.105)。术后角膜散光由术前2.09±0.789D降至术后0.523±0.277D(P<0.05)。BCVA(LogMAR)从术前1.007±0.402显著提高到术后0.024±0.062(P<0.05)。角膜曲率变化与预测误差无相关性(r=-0.29,P=0.19)。翼状胬肉大小与预测误差无相关性(r=0.2997,P=0.17)。结论:超声乳化与折叠式人工晶状体植入联合自体结膜移植术的应用是一种安全有效的手术方法。
