Determination of Capsaicin Induced Increase in Dermal Blood Flow Using Laser Doppler Flowmetry Technique

In the present study, we evaluated laser Doppler flowmetry technique using LDF100C (Biopac systems) by determining blood flow changes following acute application of capsaicin on 12 healthy human subjects. Capsaicin applied locally (topical application) at a dose of 0.075% produced significant increase in mean dermal blood flow from 31.4 ± 3.1 Blood Perfusion Units (BPU) to 115. 7 ± 24.6 Blood Perfusion Units (BPU) after 30 minutes, also there was significant difference in dermal blood flow change between placebo (32.1 ± 2.7 BPU) and capsaicin (115.7 ± 24.6 BPU) applica- tion. Capsaicin application produced significant percentage change in dermal blood flow by 291.0 ± 85.3% from baseline, while the change was insignificant with placebo (13.2 ± 7.4%). Therefore, it is suggested that this technique which is technically sound, non-invasive and inexpensive can be adopted in various fields of research to determine blood flow changes and this technique can also be utilized to determine the antagonists of the mediators involved in capsaicin induced vasodilatation.

Efficacy of Hypertonic Saline and Normal Saline in the Treatment of Chronic Sinusitis

Introduction: Chronic sinusitis affects all age groups and is a cause for significant morbidity. Recent realization that noninfectious inflammatory causes can predispose to infectious sinusitis has evoked renewed interest in developing and documenting efficacious ancillary therapies that could supplement antibiotic use. Hypertonic saline solution has been shown to increase mucociliary clearance and ciliary beat frequency. Objectives: A double blinded randomized comparative study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of hypertonic saline (3.5%) nasal drops and normal saline (0.9%) nasal drops, to assess the tolerance of hypertonic saline nasal drops and to know if hypertonic nasal drops improve the “quality of life” in patients with chronic sinusitis. Methods: Fifty patients diagnosed as chronic sinusitis in the age group of 18-45 years were randomized into two groups;Group A was treated with normal saline and Group B with 3.5% hypertonic saline for a period of 4 weeks. Pre and Post treatment x-rays of the paranasal sinuses (Water’s view) were graded and radiological scores were given accordingly. The symptoms were evaluated before and after treatment using visual analogue score. Patients were queried about tolerance to the nasal solution and scores were given. Conclusion: Hypertonic saline nasal solution is more efficacious than normal saline solution in the treatment of patients with chronic sinusitis. Hypertonic saline nasal solution was well tolerated and it improved quality of life in these patients.

Qualitative and Quantitative Changes in Biochemical Constituents in the Rice Plant Treated with Different Xenobiotics

Experiments were conducted at Entomology division of Directorate of Rice research to study the qualitative and quantitative changes in biochemical constituents in the rice plant treated with different xenobiotics, viz. insecticides like deltamethrin, imidacloprid, herbicide like 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, fungicide like carbendazim, green manure Calotropis gigantea leaves, botanicals like Neem Seed Powder and fertilizer urea along with control plants of TN1, PTB33 and Swama varieties comprising of total 15 treatments. Application of butachlor, carbendazim, deltamethrin and excessive nitrogen fertilization resulted in increased population build up of brown plant hopper （BPH）. Significantly, lower honeydew excretion （13 mme area） in the BPH nymphs was observed on resistant PTB33 variety compared to susceptible TN1 and Swarna varieties （116 and 110 mm2 respectively）. In susceptible TN1 variety, the sucrose content was significantly higher （9.35 mg/g tissue） compared to BPH resistant PTB33 （5.32 mg/g tissue）. The BPH resistant PTB33 variety exhibited significantly lower free amino acid content （1.23 mg/g tissue） as compared to TN1 （2.51 mg/g）. The C/N ratio was comparatively high in the resistant PTB33 alone （4.32）, but was low in PTB33 applied with 2,4-D ＋ carbendazim （2.73）, 2,4-D ＋ imidacloprid ~ carbendazim （2.3）, excess urea fertilizer （2.18）. The total phenol contents measured in resistant PTB33 （7.5 mg/g dry wt）, susceptible TN1 （5.865 mg/g dry wt） and the popular variety Swarna （5.57 mg/g dry wt） were almost same and no statistical difference was observed. Further, treatment of these varieties with different xenobiotics and botanicals also did not significantly alter their total phenol content. However, the phenol content of the resistant PTB 33 alone and treated with xenobiotics was higher compared to the susceptible TN 1 and Swarna varieties alone and treated with xenobiotics. Role of Intratympanic Steroids in the Management of Idiopathic Sudden Sensori Neural Hearing Loss— Our Experience of 67 Cases

Objective: To assess the outcomes of intratympanic steroids in the management of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Study Design: Retrospective study. Setting: Academic tertiary care medical centre. Materials and Methods: A total of 67 patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss were included in our study. Pre- and post-injection audiograms were taken to assess the outcomes in improvement in hearing. Hearing outcomes were assessed with respect to duration of onset of treatment and age of the patient. Improvement in the speech discrimination score was also assessed. Results: A total of 67 patients were included in our study of which unilateral cases were 59 and bilateral cases were 8. Subjectively 35 patients reported improvement in hearing after the therapy while objectively we found 44 ears [41 patients] had improvement. The mean PTA pre ITS was 62.7 and after ITS it was 56.3. Maximum improvement was noted at 2000 Hz and 1000 Hz. Conclusion: Intratympanic steroids can be offered as a first line therapy for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss as it is minimally invasive, and can be performed as an office based procedure with no systemic side effects. No major complications have been reported in our study and results have been satisfactory.

Nepeta cataria L., commonly known as catmint or catnip, belongs to the family “Lamiaceae” and is indigenous to Europe and Asia. The essential oil of this species is known for the richness and diversity of nepetalactones (NPL) which are used as mosquito/insect repellents in perfumery and cosmetic industries. Reports on Indian catmint germplasm are very meager and warrants exploration of its commercial potential as a natural, non-toxic source of insect repellents. With this objective, commercial open-pollinated seeds of catmint collected from its native, temperate habitat in Himalayas were introduced in the tropical plains. Subsequent to adaptation to a new zone we were able to isolate nineteen individual plants based on plant growth. Hydrodistillation of the fresh herb yielded essential oil in the range of 0.01% to 0.2%. Gas Chromatography (GC) and GC-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses of the oil revealed the dominance of monoterpene hydrocarbon, namely, 4aα,7α,7aα NPL (1) isomer (84%). The other two isomers of nepetalactone, 4aα,7α,7aβ NPL (2) and 4aα,7β,7aα NPL (3) were also present, although in very less amounts (1.0% and 1.6%, respectively). Pyocele of maxillary sinus occurs unusually, when its mucocele content gets secondarily infected. Most of the pyocele occupies the frontal and anterior ethmoid sinus involving the frontal-ethmoidal complex expanding into the orbit leading to ocular disorders. Maxillary sinus presentation is rare, and our patient had a well defined loculated pyocele in her right maxillary sinus that we suspected with radiological images and was confirmed by needle aspiration under endoscopic guidance to the pyocele sac. Here we would like to describe more in detail about the nature of the mucopyocele in paranasal sinuses, its presentation and various surgical modalities of treating the pyocele.

Malignancy of otorhinolaryngeal region is the 6th common malignancy worldwide and nowadays the incidence is increasing in developing countries like India. This malignancy contributes to 23% of male and 6% of female population of India [1]. Malignancies included in this study are those of oralcavity, oropharynx, nasopharynx, hypopharynx, larynx, thyroid, nose, paranasal sinuses and salivary gland tumors. This study was conducted in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Thanjavur Medical College, Thanjavur, Tamilnadu India, over a period of 2 years from August 2013 to February 2015. Histopathologically confirmed cases alone were taken for this study. In our study the laryngeal and hypopharyngeal malignancies outnumber the other regions. Males are more commonly affected and the age group of around 40 - 50 years is more commonly involved. Smoking and alcohol intake plays a major etiological factor. Cancer awareness programmes and health education regarding risk factors can help to reduce the incidence of malignancies in our Thanjavur delta region.

Hematological, antioxidant and protective performance of Usnea longissima on chemical induced hepatotoxicity in experimental animals

Objective: To investigated the hematological, antioxidant and protective performance of Usnea longissima (U. longissima) on CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity in experimental animals. Methods: Hepatotoxicity was induced by CCl4 (1 mL/kg body weigt 1:1 CCl4 i.p.), ethanolic U. longissima extracts at a doses (200 and 400 mg/kg body weigt) were administered to and compared with Silymarin (25 mg/kg body weigt) and hematological, antioxidant and enzymatic, non-enzymatic parameters were assessed through the liver functions test. All the observation was also supplemented with histopathological examination of liver sections. Results: Phytochemical investigation showed that ethanolic extract contains poly phenolic compounds tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids and saponins and acute toxicity study shows that ethanolic extract was safe up to 2000 mg/kg body weight. The toxicant induced a rise in the plasma enzyme levels of ALT, AST, ALP and total bilirubin level. This increased level was significantly decreased by the extract at 400 mg/kg body weight than 200 mg/kg body weight. The animals were prevented (partly or fully) which was showed in the histopathological changes using ethonolic U. longissima extract. Conclusions: The outcome of this study reveals that, there is a powerful antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity of U. longissima. It is believed that the present constituents are responsible for courting the hepatic disease and alternative components have the power to act as free radical scavenging properties.
