Development of ecoregion-based merchantable volume systems for Pinus brutia Ten. and Pinus nigra Arnold. in southern Turkey

Estimating individual tree volume is one of the essential building blocks in forest growth and yield models. Ecologically based taper equations provide accurate vol- ume predictions and allow classification by mer- chantable sizes, assisting in sustainable forest management. In the present study, ecoregion-based compatible volume systems for brutian pine and black pine in the three ecoregions of southern Turkey were developed. Several well-known taper functions were evaluated. A second- order continuous-time autoregressive error structure was used to correct the inherent autocorrelation in the hierar- chical data, allowing the model to be applied to irregularly spaced and unbalanced data. The compatible segmented model of Fang et al. （For Sci 46：1-12, 2000） best described the experimental data. It is therefore recommended for estimating diameter at a specific height, height to a specific diameter, merchantable volume, and total volume for the three ecoregions and two species analyzed. The nonlinearextra sum of squares method indicated differences in ecoregion and tree-specific taper functions. A different taper function should therefore be used for each pine spe- cies and ecoregion in southern Turkey. Using ecoregion- specific taper equations allows making more robust esti- mations and, therefore, will enhance the accuracy of diameter at different heights and volume predictions.

Objective:To evaluate the epidemiological,demographic,clinical features,treatment approaches,and survival of patients followed up for adrenal incidentaloma.Methods:Data from 46 patients who were treated and followed up due to adrenal incidentaloma in the Endocrinology Department of Mersin University Health Research and Application Hospital between 2010 and 2014 were retrospectively analyzed.Results:Of the cases included in the study,13 were male,33 were female,and the mean age was 54.09±10.7 years.The most common reason for admission was abdominal pain in 34.78%of the patients,the most commonly diagnosed radiological method was dynamic adrenal CT in 60.87%,and the most common location was the left adrenal gland.The mean lesion diameter was between 26.8±16.5 mm.The frequency of hypertension was 50%,obesity 47.8%,type 2 diabetes 21.7%,osteoporosis 42.8%,and metabolic syndrome 41.3%.According to hormonal evaluation results,non-functional adrenal adenoma(NFAA)was found in 82.61%,subclinical Cushing’s syndrome(SCS)in 15.21%,and aldosteronoma in 2.1%.Myelolipoma,pheochromocytoma,and adrenocortical adenoma were diagnosed in 8 cases undergoing adrenalectomy.One patient died due to liver failure.No hormonal activation or growth in lesion size was detected during the follow-up of the patients.Conclusion:Due to the very different pathological and radiological appearances of adrenal incidentaloma,it is important to evaluate demographic,etiological,clinical,laboratory,and radiological data as a whole in the treatment and follow-up.

The diameter distribution of trees in a stand provides the basis for determining the stand’s ecological and economic value,its structure and stability and appropriate management practices.Scots pine(Pinus sylvestris L.)is one of the most common and important conifers in Turkey,so a well-planned management schedule is critical.Diameter distribution models to accurately describe the stand structure help improve management strategies,but developing reliable models requires a deep understanding of the growth,output and constraints of the forests.The most important information derived by diameter distribution models is primary data on horizontal stand structure for each diameter class of trees:basal area and volume per unit area.These predictions are required to estimate the range of products and predicted volume and yield from a forest stand.Here,to construct an accurate,reliable diameter distribution model for natural Scots pine stands in the Türkmen Mountain region,we used Johnson’s SBdistribution to represent the empirical diameter distributions of the stands using ground-based measurements from 55 sample plots that included1219 trees in natural distribution zones of the forests.As an alternative,nonparametric approach,which does not require any predefined function,an artificial intelligence model was constructed based on support vector machine methodology.An error index was calculated to evaluate the results.Overall,both Johnson’s SB probability density function with a three-parameter recovery approach and the support vector regression methodology provided reliable estimates of the diameter distribution of these stands.

BACKGROUND Claudin 18.2(CLDN18.2)is a cell surface protein expressed by gastric cancer cells.The monoclonal antibody zolbetuximab binds CLDN18.2-positive cancer cells and causes cancer cell death.A few studies researched the prognostic effect of CLDN18.2 expression in metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma.AIM To identify the prognostic value of CLDN18.2 expression in patients with metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma.METHODS This study was conducted with 65 patients over the age of 18 who were diagnosed with metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma.We investigated the effect of CLDN18.2 expression on clinicopathological characteristics(age,sex,histological grade,Lauren classification,family history,metastatic site,HER2 expression)and prognosis for patients with metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma.RESULTS CLDN18.2 expression was positive in 73.8%(48)of the patients.During the median 17.7-mo follow-up period,89.2%(58)of the patients died.Median progression-free survival and overall survival(OS)were 6 mo(95%confidence interval:1.6-10.4)and 12 mo(95%confidence interval:7.5-16.5).There was no statistically significant correlation between CLDN18.2 expression and clinicopathological characteristics of the patients.In univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis,there was no correlation between clinicopathological characteristics of patients and progression-free survival or OS.CONCLUSION CLDN18.2 expression was quite high in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma,identifying the proportion of the patients in whom zolbetuximab would be efficacious.There is no statistically significant correlation with clinicopathological characteristics and OS.CLDN18.2 is not a prognostic marker in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma,although it is predictive.

AIM: To evaluate plasma and aqueous levels of adiponutrin and pannexin 1 in patients with and without diabetic retinopathy.METHODS: The study included three age and gendermatched groups of 20 cataract patients with no diabetes or additional disease(Group C), 20 cataract patients with diabetes and no retinopathy(Group DM+C), and 20 cataract patients with diabetic retinopathy(Group DR+C).All the patients were examined with respect to body mass index(BMI), fasting plasma glucose, hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c), and lipid profile.Phacoemulsification and intraocular lens(Phaco+IOL) implantation were performed to all patients in all the groups, and aqueous samples were taken during the operation.The plasma and aqueous adiponutrin and pannexin 1 levels were analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.RESULTS: A statistically significant difference was determined between the groups with respect to BMI, fasting plasma glucose, and HbA1c levels(P<0.05 for all parameters tested).The plasma adiponutrin levels of Group DR+C were statistically significantly lower than those of Group C and Group DM+C(P<0.001, P=0.004).No statistically significant difference was determined in the aqueous adiponutrin levels in three groups.The plasma pannexin 1 levels of Groups DM+C and DR+C were statistically significantly lower than those of Group C(both P=0.001).The aqueous pannexin 1 levels of Group DR+C were statistically significantly higher than those of Group C and Group DM+C(P=0.001, P<0.001).CONCLUSION: Adiponutrin and pannexin 1, which play an important role in the pathophysiology of diabetes and obesity, and have a regulatory role in hyperglycemia and insulin resistance.The measurement of adiponutrin and pannexin 1 levels may support clinicians in determining the risk of DR development.

Wet cupping therapy （WCT） is a traditional complementary therapy, which has been in use for many centuries. WCT is used as an alternative and complementary medicine in the treatment of low back pain, migraine headaches, hypertension, brachialgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, oxygen saturation in smokers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and metabolic syndrome,tll WCT is also used in dermatological diseases, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis acne and urticaria.E2} Side effects of WCT, such as hypotension and bradycardia, rarely occur during application. However, dermatitis, localized infection, scarring and abscess have been reported following WCT.TM In some cases, bubbles of fluid may form at the treatment sites of WCT; these deposits may be located in the epidermis only or in both the epidermidis and the dermis. Fluid deposits of 〈 5 mm in diameter are defined as vesicles and when diameter of fluid deposits 〉 5 mm, they are called bullae.E41 Here we present a case of vesiculobullous lesions after WCT and discuss the physiopathology.

Objective:Wet cupping therapy(WCT)is one of the complementary and traditional therapies that are still must be scientifically interpreted.This study aimed to assess hemogram parameters that are subclinical inflammatory markers in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome(FMS)and observe how they were affected with WCT.Methods:The present study consisted of two groups;patient group included participants who were diagnosed with FMS and who received WCT and control group included healthy participants who received WCT within the concept of preventive medicine.Results:Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR)and platelet-lymphocyte ratio(PLR)values were higher in the patient group(P=0.029and P=0.003,respectively).Considering that the participants had FMS,the optimal cutoff value for PLR was≥1.62,sensitivity was 70%,specificity was 56%,positive predictive value was 61.7%,and negative predictive value was 65.3%.Receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve revealed a significant sensitivity and specificity(ROC area=0.664),(confidence interval[CI]:0.530–0.781)(P<0.023).The optimal cutoff value for PLR was≥146,sensitivity was 60%,specificity was 83%,positive predictive value was 78%,and negative predictive value was 67%.ROC curve revealed a statistically significant sensitivity and specificity(ROC area=0.726),(CI:0.59–0.83)(P<0.001).The optimal cutoff value for platelet was≥284,000,sensitivity was 83%,specificity was 40%,positive predictive value was 58%,and negative predictive value was 70%.ROC curve revealed a significant sensitivity and specificity(ROC area=0.65),(CI:0.51–0.76)(P=0.036).Conclusion:NLR,PLR,and thrombocyte count parameters can be useful in the process of diagnosing FMS.In addition,NLR,PLR,and MPV decreased in patients who received WCT.

OBJECTIVE:To characterize the chemical profile of methanolic crude extract and its fractions(Ethyl acetate,n-butanol and aqueous)using liquid chromatographymass spectrometry(LC-MS)analysis,to evaluate their biological and pharmacological properties:antioxidant(1,1-diphenyl-2-pycrylhydrazyl(DPPH),2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic)(ABTS·+),galvinoxyle free radical scavenging,reducing power,phenanthroline andβcarotene-linoleic acid bleaching assays),enzymes inhibitory ability against several enzymes[acetylcholinesterase(AChE),buthyrylcholinesterase(BChE),urease and tyrosinase].METHODS:Secondary metabolites were extracted from Tamarix africana air-dried powdered leaves by maceration,the crude extract was fractionated using different solvents with different polarities(Ethyl acetate,n-butanol and aqueous).The amount of polyphenols,flavonoids and tannins(hydrolysable and condensed)were determined using colorimetric assays.A variety of in vitro biochemical tests were carried out to assess antioxidant and oxygen radical scavenging properties using DPPH,ABTS,galvinoxyle free radical scavenging,reducing power,phenanthroline andβcarotene-linoleic acid bleaching methods.Neuroprotective effect was examined against acetylcholinesterase and buthyrylcholinesterase enzymes.The anti-urease and antityrosinase activities were performed against urease and tyrosinase enzymes respectively.The extract’s components were identified using LC-MS and compared to reference substances.RESULTS:The results indicated that Tamarix africana extracts presented a powerful antioxidant activity in all assays and exhibited a potent inhibitory effect against AChE and BChE as well as urease and tyrosinase enzymes.LC-MS analysis identified amount of eight phenolic compounds were revealed in this analysis;Apigenin,Diosmin,Quercetin,Quercetine-3-glycoside,Apigenin 7-O glycoside,Rutin,Neohesperidin and Wogonin in methanolic extract and its different fractions of Tamarix africana from leaves.CONCLUSIONS:Based on these findings,it is reasonable t
