Outcomes of revision external dacryocystorhinostomy and nasal intubation by bicanalicular silicone tubing under endonasal endoscopic guidance

AIM: To evaluate the long-term treatment outcomes in patients who underwent revision of external dacryocysto- rhinostomy (DCR) and nasal intubation by bicanalicular silicone tubing (BSTI) under endonasal endoscopic guidance. · METHODS: Data from 28 patients with recurrent dacryocystitis were retrospectively reviewed. Revision external DCR and bicanalicular nasal intubation by silicone tubing under endonasal endoscopic guidance was performed in 28 eyes of 28 patients. The patients were evaluated with respect to the reason of recurrence, time to recurrence, time to revision, duration of follow-up and surgical success. · RESULTS: Endoscopic endonasal examination detected an osteotomy-side obstruction by the excessive granulation tissue in 24 patients (86%), nasal septal deviation in three patients (10%) and nasal polyp in one patient (4%). Recurrence occurred after a mean duration of 5.3±3.7 months following the first operation. The mean time between the first DCR operation and the revision DCR was 11.5 ± 9.3 months. After a mean follow-up of 14.9±7.8 months, the rate of anatomic success alone was 85% (24/28); the rate of subjective success was 78% (22/28). · COnCLUSIOn: Revision external DCR and bicanalicular nasal intubation by silicone tubing under endonasal endoscopic guidance can be recommended in patients with recurrent dacryocystitis as a surgical approach that achieves satisfactory objective and subjective success rates.

Exogenous testosterone therapy on choroid in androgen deficiency

AIM:To investigate the effects of exogenous testosterone treatment on the choroidal parameters in patients with androgen ***:Right eyes of 24 patients with androgen deficiency and 31 healthy volunteers were included in the *** eyes were scanned for subfoveal choroidal thickness(SFCT),choroidal vascularity index(CVI),choroidstromal area(C-SA),choroid-luminal area(C-LA),choroidstromal to luminal area ratio(CSLR),and the choroidal parameters within central 1500μm of the macula(CVI1500,C-LA1500,C-SA1500,and CSLR1500)by enhanced-depth imaging optical coherence tomography(EDI-OCT)at baseline,6th and 18th weeks of the exogenous testosterone ***:The mean SFCT values of the androgen deficient groups and healthy controls were 307.7±27.0 and 303.2±37.2μm(P=0.8).However,CVI,C-SA,CSLR,CVI1500,C-LA1500,and CSLR1500 were significantly different between the groups(all Pgenous testosterone treatment,SFCT,CVI,C-LA,and C-SA were significantly decreased,and these parameters returned to baseline levels at the 18th-week visit(all P>0.05).However,CVI1500 and LA1500 significantly increased at the end of the follow-up period(PnCLUSIOn:CVI is lower in androgen-deficient patients than in healthy *** alterations in the choroid during the testosterone peak are transient in the treatment of patients with androgen ***,the increase in CVI within the central 1500μm of the macula persists even after 4mo.

Plasma and aqueous humor levels of adiponutrin and pannexin 1 in patients with and without diabetic retinopathy

AIM: To evaluate plasma and aqueous levels of adiponutrin and pannexin 1 in patients with and without diabetic ***: The study included three age and gendermatched groups of 20 cataract patients with no diabetes or additional disease(group C), 20 cataract patients with diabetes and no retinopathy(group DM+C), and 20 cataract patients with diabetic retinopathy(group DR+C).All the patients were examined with respect to body mass index(BMI), fasting plasma glucose, hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c), and lipid *** and intraocular lens(Phaco+IOL) implantation were performed to all patients in all the groups, and aqueous samples were taken during the *** plasma and aqueous adiponutrin and pannexin 1 levels were analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent ***: A statistically significant difference was determined between the groups with respect to BMI, fasting plasma glucose, and HbA1c levels(Pnutrin levels of group DR+C were statistically significantly lower than those of group C and group DM+C(Pno statistically significant difference was determined in the aqueous adiponutrin levels in three *** plasma pannexin 1 levels of groups DM+C and DR+C were statistically significantly lower than those of group C(both P=0.001).The aqueous pannexin 1 levels of group DR+C were statistically significantly higher than those of group C and group DM+C(P=0.001, PnCLUSIOn: Adiponutrin and pannexin 1, which play an important role in the pathophysiology of diabetes and obesity, and have a regulatory role in hyperglycemia and insulin *** measurement of adiponutrin and pannexin 1 levels may support clinicians in determining the risk of DR development.

Objective:To evaluate the epidemiological,demographic,clinical features,treatment approaches,and survival of patients followed up for adrenal ***:Data from 46 patients who were treated and followed up due to adrenal incidentaloma in the Endocrinology Department of Mersin University Health Research and Application Hospital between 2010 and 2014 were retrospectively ***:Of the cases included in the study,13 were male,33 were female,and the mean age was 54.09±10.7 *** most common reason for admission was abdominal pain in 34.78%of the patients,the most commonly diagnosed radiological method was dynamic adrenal CT in 60.87%,and the most common location was the left adrenal *** mean lesion diameter was between 26.8±16.5 *** frequency of hypertension was 50%,obesity 47.8%,type 2 diabetes 21.7%,osteoporosis 42.8%,and metabolic syndrome 41.3%.According to hormonal evaluation results,non-functional adrenal adenoma(nFAA)was found in 82.61%,subclinical Cushing’s syndrome(SCS)in 15.21%,and aldosteronoma in 2.1%.Myelolipoma,pheochromocytoma,and adrenocortical adenoma were diagnosed in 8 cases undergoing *** patient died due to liver *** hormonal activation or growth in lesion size was detected during the follow-up of the ***:Due to the very different pathological and radiological appearances of adrenal incidentaloma,it is important to evaluate demographic,etiological,clinical,laboratory,and radiological data as a whole in the treatment and follow-up.

Catalytic-kinetic spectrophotometric determination of vanadium (V) based on the Celestine blue-bromate-vanadium (V)-citric acid reaction

A novel sensitive and relatively selective kinetic method is presented for the determination of V（V） based on its catalytic effect on the oxidation reaction of Celestine blue by potassium bromate in the presence of citric acid as an activator. The reaction was monitored spectropho- tometrically by measuring the decrease in absorbance of Celestine blue at a maximum absorption wavelength of 540 nm between 0.5 and 9 min （the fixed-time method） in an H3PO4 medium at 45℃. The effect of various parameters such as concentrations of H3PO4, citric acid, potassium bromate and Celestine blue, ionic strength, reaction temperature and time on the rate of V（V） catalyzed reaction was studied. The method is free from the most interferences, especially from large amounts of V（IV）. The decrease in absorbance is proportional to the concentration of V（V） over the entire concentration range tested （0.025-1.25 ***^-1） with a detection limit of 6.80 tag.L^-1 （according to statistical 3Sblank/k criterion） and a coefficient of variation （CV） of 1.78% （for ten replicate measurements at 95% confidence level）. The proposed method suffers from a few interferences such as Cr（VI） and Hg（Ⅱ） ions. The method was successfully applied to the determination of V（V） in river water, lake water, tap water, natural drinking water samples and a certified standard reference material such as SRM-1640 with satis- factory results. The vanadium contents of natural water samples were detected by using both linear calibration curve and standard addition curve methods. The recoveries of spiked vanadium （V） into the certified standard water sample were found to be quantitative, and the reproducibility was satisfactory. It was observed that the results of the SRM 1640 were in good agreement with the certified value.

Micellar sensitized catalytic kinetic spectrophotometry for highly accurate and reproducible determination of Ⅴ(Ⅳ) and Ⅴ(Ⅴ)

A highly accurate and reproducible micellar sensitized kinetic method was proposed for determination of V（VI）. The method is based on its catalytic effect on the oxidation of Coomassie brilliant blue R 250 （CBB＋） by bromate at pH 2.0. The reaction was monitored spectro- photometrically by measuring absorbance change with a fixed-time method of 5 min at 594 and 552 nm with and without surfactant. The variables influencing the calibra- tion sensitivity were extensively investigated, and the optimal conditions were established. The linear calibration range was 10-1,600 μg.L-1 with a relative SD ranging from 0.35 % to 3.35 % （for five replicate measurements of 75, 500, 1,000, and 1,500 μg.L-1） and a detection limit of 3.8 μg.L-1. The selectivity was also investigated, and greatly enhanced by suitable masking agents. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of V（IV） in pre- sence of excess V（V） up to 25 fold in environmental waters with the recoveries of 100.0 %-102.8 % for V（IV） and 95.7 %-99.7 % for total V. Its accuracy was validated by analysis of certified reference material via the present kinetic method and standard flame atomic absorption spectrometric method after extractive preconcentration with good agreement between certified and found values.

Prognostic value of claudin 18.2 expression in gastric adenocarcinoma

A novel indicator system for catalytic spectrophotometric determination and speciation of inorganic selenium species (Se(Ⅳ), Se(Ⅵ)) at trace levels in natural lake and river water samples

A novel catalytic kinetic method is proposed for the determination of Se（Ⅳ）, Se（Ⅵ）, and total inorganic selenium in water based on the catalytic effect of Se（Ⅳ） on the reduction of Celestine blue by sodium sulfide at pH 7.0 phosphate buffer. The fixed-time method was adopted for the determination and speciation of inorganic selenium. Under the optimum conditions, the two calibration graphs are linear with a good correlation coefficient in the range 2-20 and 20-200 μg·L-1 of Se（Ⅳ） for the fixed-time method at 30℃. The experimental and theo- retical detection limits of the developed kinetic method were found to be 0.21 and 2.50 μg·L-1 for the fixed-time method （3 min）. All of the variables that affect the sensitivity at 645 nm were investigated, and the optimum conditions were established. The interference effect of various cations and anions on the Se（Ⅳ） determination was also studied. The selectivity of the selenium determination was greatly improved with the use of the strongly cation exchange resin such as Amberlite IR120 plus as long as chelating agents of thiourea and thiosulphate. The proposed kinetic method was validated statistically and through recovery studies in natural water samples. The relative standard deviations （RSDs） for ten replicate measurements of 2, 10, and 20 μg·L-1 of Se（Ⅳ） change between 0.35% and 5.58%, while the RSDs for ten replicate measurements of 3, 6, and 12 μg·L-1 of Se（Ⅵ） change between 0.49% and 1.61%. Analyses of a certified standard reference material （nIST SRM 1643e） for selenium using the fixed-time method showed that the proposed kinetic method has good accuracy. The Se（Ⅳ）, Se（Ⅵ）, and total inorganic selenium in lake and river water samples have been successfully determined by this method after selective reduction of Se（Ⅵ） to Se（Ⅳ）.
