The antioxidant status in human population based on the concept of prakruthi in Ayurveda

Objective:In the Ayurvedic system of medicine,body constitution(prakruthi) is said to play a vital role in the disease process as well as in its *** radical toxicity is also involved in the etiopathogenesis of many ***,in the present study an attempt has been made to correlate the body constitution type and the antioxidant status of that ***:Healthy volunteers from Manipal University Campus, South Karnataka,India were classified into three main human constitutions(prakruthi) and their possible combinations and their serum total antioxidant activity was ***:There was a significant negative correlation of the total antioxidant status with the pitta prakruthi whereas vata and kapha constitutions showed no significant correlation with the total antioxidant ***:Ayurveda classifies each individual based on his/her prakruthi into three categories of Doshas:Vata,Pitta and Kapha(collectively known as Tridoshas ). The three Doshas are fundamental regulatory principles responsible for maintaining organism functioning and manifesting those characteristics typifying each individual,that is,in equilibrium Tridoshas signify health and an imbalance leads to ***,in this study a significantly decreased antioxidant status in the Pitta group would render them more susceptible to damage by oxidative ***,we suggest that supplementation with antioxidants of herbal(Ayurvedic) origin to such a group would prove to be beneficial - opening up the arena for pharmacogenomics and customized antioxidant drug administration based on the prakruthi of an individual.

This paper reviews some of the many published technical papers relating to the design of bandpass filters using Evanescent mode(waveguide below cut-off)technique.A small section of an evanescent mode closely represents lumped *** may be formed by introducing capacitive obstacles in the waveguide and this concept is being used in the design of tunable bandpass *** mode filters have drawn much attention to applications such as air-borne equipment and satellite systems due to the fact that they are light weight and smaller in size compared to conventional *** will follow the development of this methodology from the early investigations through the later applications and see how inductive strips in ridge waveguides would improve the performance of evanescent mode bandpass filters.

目的本研究旨在探讨硬毛巴豆(CH)提取物在链脲佐菌素(STZ)大鼠中的神经保护作用。方法(1)亚慢性毒性试验包括24只成年大鼠,雌雄不限,体重160~200 g,分为4组,每组6只。第1组大鼠给予二甲基亚砜(DMSO)与生理盐水混合物;第2、3、4组大鼠灌胃给药硬毛巴豆甲醇提取物(MECH),剂量分别为100、200和400 mg/kg,连续28天。将功能观察组合和自发活动分级作为其神经行为活动的一部分,并对脑区(如皮质和海马)进行神经病理学异常分析。(2)研究动物体重为160~200 g的成年雄性Wistar大鼠,分为5组,每组6只,包括对照组(Ⅰ)、STZ组(Ⅱ)、多奈哌齐组(Ⅲ)、MECH组(100 mg/kg,Ⅳ)和MECH组(200 mg/kg,Ⅴ)。第Ⅰ组大鼠口服柠檬酸盐缓冲液和DMSO生理盐水混合物(14天)。第Ⅱ组大鼠在第1天和第3天侧脑室注射链脲佐菌素(3 mg/kg,双侧ICV-STZ),随后给予生理盐水DMSO混合物(14天)。第Ⅲ、Ⅳ和Ⅴ组大鼠在第1天和第3天给予STZ,随后口服多奈哌齐[3 mg/(kg·d)]和MECH[100和200 mg/(kg·d)](14天)。检测大鼠Morris水迷宫(MWM)和被动回避试验(PAT)等学习记忆指标。完成行为学实验后处死动物,取脑,用紫外可见分光光度计测定乙酰胆碱酯酶(AChE)、脂质过氧化(LPO)、谷胱甘肽(GSH)和超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)水平。使用总荧光发射光谱法测定caspase-3水平。通过酶联免疫吸附测定(ELISA)检测β淀粉样蛋白(Aβ)水平,同时对CA1海马区进行组织病理学分析。结果(1)亚慢性毒性结果显示,各组MECH大鼠的旷场试验参数(包括线交叉、直立、进入中广场、排便或排尿)无显著差异(P>0.05)。组织病理学结果显示,与对照组大鼠相比,经过MECH治疗的大鼠两个区域的神经元细胞中均未产生任何病变和炎症。(2)研究主要发现STZ处理大鼠在学习和记忆参数受损显著增加(P<0.001),AChE、caspase-3、Aβ(1-40和1-42)和LPO水平均显著升高(P<0.001),且SOD和GSH水平显著降低(P<0.01)。此外,在海马区发现神经元损伤。相反,STZ诱导大鼠的行为和生化损伤与MECH治疗呈剂量依赖性降低。结论MECH通过其抗氧化作用可显著预防STZ诱导的记忆缺陷,胆碱能功能的恢复可能是行为改善的原因。因此,MECH可能治疗包括阿尔茨海默病在内的认知障碍。

Dear Editor,For patientswith epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR)mutant non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC),EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors(TKIs)are used as the first-line treatment[1,2].Despite initial therapeutic responses,patients invariably experience disease progression due to acquired drug resistance[3].Resistance arises,in part,because a subset of cancer cells undergoes epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)and remains viable despite exposure to EGFR TKI concentrations that eliminate the bulk population[4].The surviving cells can be re-sensitized to treatment by prolonged culture in the absence of EGFR TKIs,indicating a transient.

Detection of blaNDM-1 and Genetic Relatedness in Clinical Isolates of Escherichia coli Producing Extended Spectrum β-Lactamase from Tertiary Care Centres in South India

Background: Extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) producing E. coli co-producing other β-lactamases and exhibiting co-resistance to different antibiotic classes continue to emerge as a threat to clinical field. This study aimed to analyze the co-production of New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 (blaNDM-1) in ESBL producing plasmid-bearing clinical isolates collected from two tertiary care centres in Kerala, South India, and to understand their genetic relatedness. Methods: Antibiotic resistance phenotypes of 44 clinical isolates were determined by disc-diffusion method. Plasmid-bearing isolates, detected by the alkaline-lysis method, which also tested positive for ESBL production, were screened for the presence of blaNDM-1 by polymerase chain reaction. Plasmid, random amplified polymorphic DNA profiles and blaNDM-1 sequence-based phylogenetic tree were analyzed to understand the genotypic similarities among the isolates. Results: Beta-lactam antibiotics, quinolones, cephalosporins, used in this study, and AZM were found to be ineffective against the isolates as significantly high number of isolates were resistant to these antibiotics (P < 0.01). Plasmid bearing isolates constituted 57% (n = 25), all of which were found to be ESBL producers. blaNDM-1 amplicons were noticed in four (16%) isolates and these DNA sequences showed homology between them and with similar sequences reported from other countries like Japan and Korea. Plasmid and RAPD profiles demonstrated that most of the isolates, including those harbouring blaNDM-1 shared genetic similarities as well as an apparent geographical distinctiveness. Conclusion: The predominance of ESBL production and the occurrence of blaNDM-1 in plasmid-bearing isolates observed in our study corroborate the worldwide drug-resistance scenario. This study thus warrants the need for constant surveillance in the face of sparse information available in Kerala State on the emerging drug resistance in clinical bacteria.

Broadleaf Weed Control in Sunflower (<i>Helianthus annuus</i>) with Preemergence-Applied Pyroxasulfone with and without Sulfentrazone

A field study was conducted at two locations in Kansas, USA in 2011 and 2012 to test weed control efficacy and crop response to preemergence-applied pyroxasulfone alone and in combination with sulfentrazone in sunflower. Treatments included three rates of pyroxasulfone (100, 200 and 400 g·ha-1) applied alone and tank-mixed with sulfentrazone at 70, 140 and 280 g·ha-1. Commercial standards sulfentrazone at 140 g·ha-1 + pendimethalin at 1390 g·ha-1 and sulfentrazone at 140 g·ha-1 + S-metolachlor at 1280 g·ha-1 were also included. Pyroxasulfone at 100 g·ha-1 controlled Palmer amaranth 87% at 3 weeks after application (WAA), but control decreased to 76% at 6 WAA. Increasing pyroxasulfone rate to ≥200 g·ha-1 or tank mixing with sulfentazone at 140 g·ha-1 provided ≥90% Palmer amaranth control for at least 6 WAA. Sulfentrazone alone at 70 g·ha-1 controlled Palmer amaranth 77% at 3 WAA, but control dropped to 69% at 6 WAA. Increasing sulfentrazone rate from 70 to 140 or 280 g·ha-1 increased control to >90% at 3 WAA, but did not maintain acceptable control at 6 WAA. Tank mixing sulfentrazone at 140 g·ha-1 with pendimethalin at 1390 g·ha-1 or S-metolachlor at 1280 g·ha-1 controlled Palmer amaranth ≥90 and 84% at 3 WAA and 6 WAA, respectively. The lowest rate of pyroxasulfone (100 g·ha-1) controlled kochia 98% and the control was complete with all other treatments. However, no treatment provided as much as 90% puncturevine control at 3 WAA and the control was commercially unacceptable (<75%) at 6 WAA. No treatment visibly injured sunflower anytime during the season or reduced sunflower plant population.

Modulation by Insulin of the Co-Localized LDL Receptor in Normal and Type-I Diabetic Subjects

Ongoing insulin therapy maintains LDL receptors at highly expressed state in Type-1 diabetic people;yet Type-1 diabetics are liable of having higher plasma LDL level. This disparity has raised doubt on the probability of existence of functionally active LDL receptor in such people. Confocal microscopy and immunoprecipitation have made it evident that a portion of insulin and LDL receptors remain together in a co-localized mode, which only gets freed in presence of insulin. The findings of this study have shown that insulin therapy protects Type-1 diabetic people from the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis by decimating the inactivity of the co-localized LDL receptors in addition to its regular effect of having increased glucose tolerance. The existence of co-localized state of these two receptors and their dependence on insulin for independent activity has, at least, presented a reason for developing hypercholesterolemia and advanced coronary atherosclerotic lesion in chronic Type-1 diabetic subjects.
