Roger T. Ames, who teaches at the University of Hawai＇i at Manoa, is beyond any doubt one of the most prominent and original voices in current discourse on Chinese philosophy. For decades he has been extremely active in advocating an understanding of ancient Chinese texts that is explicitly philosophical, that is, it speaks directly to the philosophically minded （and not primarily to the philologically oriented sinologist）. Despite this clearly confined group of addressees, he speaks decidedly not in the terminology most familiar to practitioners of dominant or mainstream Westem philosophy. Although he frequently draws contrasts and analogies with more familiar figures and more general features of Western philosophy, his favorite approach makes it a point--in fact, the central point--to give Chinese philosophy a voice of its own and thus to read its texts ＂on their own terms＂（to be understood in its double meaning as conditions and vocabulary）. But, as Ames is very much aware, translating these texts on these terms still requires a vocabulary that is not their ＂own＂-and he has thus chosen dominantly the vocabulary of early American pragmatism as the most useful in articulating what he perceives are the sensibilities of Chinese philosophy. With his many interpretative studies and philosophical translations （often co-authored with David l. Hall and Henry Rosemont Jr.）, he has pushed the frontiers of Chinese philosophy as much as of philosophy in China in various ways and into various directions--something that has found an impressive echo both in terms of followers （many relate a story that they initially became interested in Chinese philosophy by having read, say, Hall and -Ames＇s Thinking Through Confucius） and in terms of critics, who have taken issue with particular translations, the overall approach, or with both.

Determination of Total Galactose from Dried Blood Spots—Extensive Assay Evaluation of a CE-Marked Test-Kit

Most newborn screening laboratories use CE-marked or FDA-approved test-kits, like in routine clinical chemistry. National regulations require only minimal evaluation from the customer, if the test-kits are used as specified by the manufacturer. The microtiter-based kit-concept is often based on the perception, that the laboratory always processes whole microtiter plates. However, in the daily routine, this is rather a rare exception, which leads to much higher costs per newborn, compared to the costs per assay in the test-kits. In addition the amount of wasted resources is quite high. Performance of the Neonatal Total Galactose kit from Perkin Elmer was tested. We have determined specificity, limit of detection (lOD), limit of quantitation (lOQ), intra and inter assay variation, recovery, stability of measuring signal and reagents. Results were also compared with the Astoria Pacific Spot Check System. In addition, we had (by chance) the opportunity to test 2 kits, which were already expired for more than 3 years. lOD was 165 - 306 μmol/l and lOQ 475 - 703 μmol/l, depending on the definition of lOD/lOQ. Mean recovery was 112.8%, intra assay CVs were 11.3, 7.3, 4.0, and 3.0, and inter assay CVs 28.7, 15.9, 7.8, and 9.3, at 220, 590, 1200, and 2060 μmol/l respectively. Reconstituted and mixed reagents must be used within some hours, and were unstable even if stored at -20℃. However, if the reconstituted galactose substrate reagent and galactose oxidase reagent were only mixed according to the daily requirements, and the rest stored separately at -20℃, they were stable for at least 12 days. The performance of the expired test-kits did not differ from the others. The performance of the Total Galactose kit is comparable to other tests used for newborn screening. However, we could significantly reduce the costs per newborn and reduce unnecessary production of waste, by thorough validation and modification of the assay procedures.

以往研究大多考察默读中是否存在副中央凹预视效应及存在何种类型的预视效应,很少有研究探讨出声阅读中的副中央凹预视效应以及阅读中预视信息提取的时间进程。本研究采用边界范式,通过两个眼动实验考察默读和出声阅读中的副中央凹预视效应及预视信息提取的时间进程。实验1发现在默读和出声阅读中都存在副中央凹预视效应,但是默读中副中央凹预视效应更大。实验2发现出声阅读中在注视中央凹词汇的早期不能提取副中央凹处信息。两个实验的结果表明默读和出声阅读条件下的副中央凹加工是不同的,需要用不同的眼动模型解释。

Is Postmastectomy Radiation Therapy Indicated in Patients with Close or Positive Margins?

Background: The indications for Post Mastectomy Radiation Therapy (PMRT) for positive or close margins are unclear. We examined the indications for PMRT in mastectomy patients with close or positive margins and determined patterns for relapse and survival. Methods: The pathology reports of 610 patients treated with a mastectomy from 1999-2012 were reviewed. Of these, 72 patients had a positive or l were compared between women treated with and without PMRT. Results: The mean follow up was 4.1 years. Patients who received PMRT were younger (p = 0.03) and more likely to receive chemotherapy (p = 0.03). Patients with lymphovascular invasion (lVI) were more likely to undergo PMRT (p = 0.02). Seven patients who did not receive PMRT recurred. There was no correlation with locoregional failure. The disease free survival was better in the PMRT group (p = 0.03), but the overall survival was the same. Conclusion: We found that women with a close or positive margin who were younger, had lVI, and who received chemotherapy received PMRT. The disease free survival was better in the PMRT cohort, but the overall survival was similar. long-term follow up of patients is warranted to see if PMRT offers a survival advantage.

The Power of Partners: A Qualitative Study of the Dissonance between African-American Females’ Interest in Practicing Secondary Abstinence and Continued Sexual Activity

Reducing disparities in STI/HIV rates for young heterosexual African-American women in the US is a public health priority. Although several strategies can reduce risk, some sexually experienced young women are choosing to abstain from sex for various reasons and periods of time following sexual debut, a practice known as secondary abstinence. However, others who desire to practice secondary abstinence find it difficult to do so. This qualitative study explored barriers that explained the dissonance between interest in secondary abstinence and continued sexual activity. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 sexually-experienced African-American adolescent females, ages 18 - 23, who expressed interest in secondary abstinence. Partner-related barriers that created power imbalances presented the greatest challenges to becoming or remaining abstinent. Findings suggest that teaching young women how to recognize characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships, identify power imbalances, communicate assertively and develop positive coping skills can empower young women to build healthier relationships with their partners.

AIM: To evaluate the impact of computed b = 1400 s/mm2(C-b1400) vs measured b = 1400 s/mm2(M-b1400) diffusion-weighted images(DWI) on lesion detection rate, image quality and quality of lesion demarcation using a modern 3T-MR system based on a small-field-of-view sequence(sFOV). METHODS: Thirty patients(PSA: 9.5 ± 8.7 ng/ml; 68 ± 12 years) referred for magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) of the prostate were enrolled in this study. All measurements were performed on a 3T MR *** DWI, a single-shot EPI diffusion sequence(b = 0, 100, 400, 800 s/mm2) was utilized. C-b1400 was cal-culated voxelwise from the ADC and diffusion images. Additionally, M-b1400 was acquired for evaluation and comparison. lesion detection rate and maximum lesion diameters were obtained and compared. Image quality and quality of lesion demarcation were rated accord-ing to a 5-point likert-type scale. Ratios of lesion-to-bladder as well as prostate-to-bladder signal intensity(SI) were calculated to estimate the signal-to-noise-ratio(SNR). RESUlTS: Twenty-four lesions were detected on M-b1400 images and compared to C-b1400 images. C-b1400 detected three additional cancer suspicious lesions. Overall image quality was rated significantly better and SI ratios were significantly higher on C-b1400(2.3 ± 0.8 vs 3.1 ± 1.0, P lesion size showed no significant differences between C- and M-b1400(P = 0.22). CONClUSION: Combination of a high b-value extrap-olation and sFOV may contribute to increase diagnostic accuracy of DWI without an increase of acquisition time, which may be useful to guide targeted prostate biopsies and to improve quality of multiparametric MRI(mMRI) especially under economical aspects in a pri-vate practice setting.

Analysis of Te and TeO<sub>2</sub>on CdZnTe Nuclear Detectors Treated with Hydrogen Bromide and Ammonium-Based Solutions

Surface defects caused during cutting and polishing in the fabrication of cadmium zinc telluride (CdZnTe) nuclear detectors limit their spectral performance. Chemical treatments are often used to remove surface damages and defects. In this paper, we present the analysis of Te and TeO2 species on the surfaces of CdZnTe nuclear detectors treated with hydrogen bromide and ammonium-based solutions. The CdZnTe wafers were chemo-mechanically polished in a mixture of hydrogen bromide in hydrogen peroxide and ethylene glycol, followed by a chemical passivation in a mixture of ammonium fluoride and hydrogen peroxide solution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed significant conversion of Te to TeO2, thus producing a more chemically stable surface. The resistivity of the CdZnTe samples is in the order of 1010 ohms-cm. The current for a given applied voltage increased following the passivation and decreased after a 3-hour period. Results from spectral response measurements showed that the 59.5-keV gamma-peak of Am-241 was stable under the same channel for the surface treatment processes.
