Mg2＋-ion Conducting Polymer Electrolytes： Materials Characterization and All-Solid-State Battery Performance Studies

For All-Solid-State battery applications, Mg2＋-ion conducting polymer electrolytes and Mg-metal electrode are currently considered as alternate choices in place of Li＋-ion conducting polymer electrolytes/Li-metal electrode. Present paper reports fabrication of All-Solid-State battery based on the following Mg2＋-ion conducting nano composite polymer electrolyte （NCPE） films： [85PEO： 15Mg（C104）2] ＋ 5% TiO2 （〈 100 nm）, [85PEO： 15Mg（CIO4）2] ＋ 3% SiO2（-8 nm）. [85PEO： 15Mg（CIO4）2] ＋ 3% MgO （〈 100 nm）, [85PEO：15Mg（C1O4）2] ＋ 3% MgO （-44 μm）. NCPE films were prepared by hot-press technique. Solid Polymer Electrolyte （SPE） composition： [85PEO： 15Mg（CIO4）2], identified as high conducting film at room temperature, has been used as ISt--phase host and nano/micro particles of active （MgO）/passive （SiO2, TiO2） fillers as IInd-phase dispersoid. Filler particle dependent conductivity studies identified above mentioned NCPE films as optimum conducting composition （OCC） at room temperature. Ion transport behavior of SPE/NCPE film materials was investigated previously. Present paper reports materials characterization and cell performance studies on All-Solid-State batteries： Mg （Anode） Ⅱ SPE or NCPE films tt C＋MnO2＋Electrolyte （Cathode）. Open circuit voltage （OCV） obtained was in the range： 1.79-1.92 V. The batteries were discharged at room temperature under different load conditions and some important battery parameters have been evaluated from plateau region of cell-potential discharge profiles. All the batteries performed quite satisfactorily specially under low current drain states.

Journey through the birth, growth and maturity of X-ray astronomy

In this biographical account, I recall my scientific journey that began in 1961 when I joined as a Physics Trainee in the BARC Training School and after one year course was admitted in TIFR as a Research Associate. During 1962–1967, I worked on determination of the He^3 /He^4 ratio in cosmic rays using a gas Cerenkov counter and also used a scintillation + solid Cerenkov detector to measure flux of protons and helium nuclei in primary cosmic rays. I also developed a large area scintillation-Cerenkov detector with a spark chamber between them for measuring charge composition of primary cosmic rays. I joined the X-ray astronomy programme in 1967 initiated by Prof. B. V. Sreekantan and played a leading role in developing a balloon borne hard X-ray instrument for studying time variability and energy spectra of cosmic X-ray sources. We carried out a series of balloon experiments and studied temporal intensity variation and energy spectra of X-ray objects like Sco X-1, Cyg X-1, etc. Results on rapid intensity changes and spectra appeared in a series of publications based on which I obtained a Ph.D. degree in 1972. Immediately afterwards, I joined Prof. Gordon Garmire at Caltech as a Research Fellow (a post-doctoral position) to work with him on the low energy component of HEAO A-2 experiment. The instrument was developed and successfully realised. Working on this satellite experiment was a thrilling experience which exposed me to the technical complexities of space instruments. The HEAO-1 satellite was launched in 1978. During 1978–1979, Guenter Riegler and I, working at JPL, reported detection of intense soft X-rays from several classes of extragalactic and Galactic objects like new BL Lacs, a new AM Her binary, coronal X-rays from active stars, etc. After returning to TIFR, I developed a rocket experiment with K. Symbiotic chemo- and immuno-therapy for hepatitis B and C viruses

Hepatitis B and C viruses(HBV and HCV), both cause serious chronic infections leading to fatal liver diseases. The prototype therapy for both HBV and HCV was based on IFN-α with or without ribavirin. The advent of direct-acting antivirals(DAA) for both HBV and HCV has remarkably improved the standard of treatment for both infections. While HCV can be eliminated following combination DAA therapy, HBV persists even after treatment, requiring life-long therapy with DAAs. Treatment with DAAs is also associated with high cost, the development of resistance and side effects. There is ample published evidence that both HBV and HCV can be eliminated from infected host cells through noncytolytic immune mechanisms. We need to identify the mechanisms behind this successful elimination of replicating viruses and develop them into novel immunotherapeutic regimens. Moreover, a synergy of, chemo- and immuno-therapeutic strategies will be necessary to eradicate HBV or HCV from a host.

Mitigating People-Park Conflicts on Resource Use through Ecotourism:A Case of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve,Indian Himalaya

Eeotourism aims to deliver the philosophy of sustainable development through environmental conservation as well as socio-economic development. Areas with rich biodiversity and scenic beauty, like the Indian Himalayan region, have been one of the major destination centers for nature lovers from historical time. In view of conserving the rich biodiversity and natural heritage of the Himalayan region 92 protected areas have been set aside, of these Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve （NDBR） is a well known world heritage site. Over a period of time establishing NDBR has invited conficts between the local people and reserve authorities on the management approaches and utilization criteria of the natural resources, especially banning the traditional bio-resource collection rights of local community, expeditions, trekking, and other anthropogenic activities in the core zones. The present study aims to understand and analyze the various people - park conflicts, and also to suggest ways to mitigate such conflicts in view of biodiversity conservation and improvement of economic status of local people by promoting eeotourism. With this view the study further discusses the various aspects of eeotourism, its pros and cons, and the avenues of developing appropriate strategies for promotion of ecotourism in buffer zone areas of NDBR.

In this paper, we present classical molecular dynamics （MD） simulations of model polymer/CNT composites constructed by embedding a single wall （10,10） CNT into two different amorphous polymer matrices： poly（methyl methacrylate） and poly{（m-phenylene-vinylene）-co- [（2,5-dioctoxy-p-phenylene） vinylene]}, respectively, with different volume fractions. The simulation results support the idea that it is possible to use CNTs to mechanically reinforce an appropri- ate polymer matrix, especially in the longitudinal direction of the nanotube. The comparison of the simulation results with the macroscopic rule-of-mixtures for composite systems showed that for strong interfacial interactions, there can be large deviations of the results from the rule-of- mixtures. In order to verify this study, results obtained have been compared with those given by Elliott and Han （2007）.

Pedogenically degenerated illite and chlorite lattices aid to palaeoclimatic reconstruction for chronologically constrained(8-130 ka) loess-palaeosols of Dilpur Formation,Kashmir,India

Chronologically well-constrained loess-palaeosols(recorded glacial and inter-glacial climate) revealed pedogenesis induced ionic substitutions,caused end-member compositional deviations in illite and chlorite,linked to widespread climatic changes occurred during Late ***,micro-level climatic resolution is yet to be ***,layer-wise X-ray diffraction analyses of clay separates,followed by Rietveld refinement revealed varied cell parameters and interatomic *** values for detrital and pedogenic illite and chlorite when plotted against stratigraphic succession show notable changes in the crystallographic *** illite lattices associated with inadequately pedogenized palaeosols have been altered into illite/smectite mixed layers,but,the chlorite lattices represent expansion of a-,b-and contraction of c-axes with much greater amount of distortions,suggestive of warm-humid and acidic *** detrital 48,44 and 83,74 bonded illite and chlorite with2 sub-types each,when pedogenized retained 48,44 and 34;and 83 and 74 bonds(in their neo-formed 3 and 2 sub-types),*** Al-O bond shows expansion,but,unchanged Si-O and decreased Si-K and K-O bonds show loss of Al and retention of Si and K ions in the illite *** illite with 32 atoms and 48 bonds represent contraction of K-O,Si-K,Al-O and Si-O bonds caused bond reinforcement;however,loss of Al3+reflects all-out illite *** to Al-O and K-O bond expansion,major K+ and Al3+ ionic loss occurred during the LGM,however,further ionic loss depends upon the magnitude of the loess-palaeosol weathering that they have *** clilate sensitive Fe,Mg and Al ionic losses for Fe-O,Mg-O and Al11-O9 bond length expansions were recognized in the chlorite *** ionic losses are common,but,complete distortion is attributed to Al,Si,Fe and Mg ionic losses,followed by weakening of Al-O,Si-O,Fe-O and Mg-O ***,Si-O4 and Fe1-O4 bonds,and Si and Fe1 st i

Morphotectonic and Lithostratigraphic Analysis of Intermontane Karewa Basin of Kashmir Himalayas,India

Morpho-tectonic study plays an important role in deciphering the effects of tectonic activity in the geomorphic evolution of the drainage *** watershed forms one of the major watersheds of the intermontane Karewa Basin of Kashmir *** Karewa sediments are characterized by glacio-fluvio-lacustrine deposits capped by the aeolian *** geomorphic,morphometric and lithostratigraphic studies of these cap deposits have been carried out to elucidate the effect of tectonics on the geomorphic evolution of Romushi *** mapping was carried out using GPS measurements,DEM at 30m resolution,Topographic Position Index(TPI) model,topographic maps,LANDSAT TM Imagery and field *** and morphotectonic analyses in GIS environment were used to calculate various geomorphic indices(Mountain Front Sinuosity Index,Bifurcation Ratio,Asymmetry Factor,River Profile,etc).These indices reveal that the tectonic uplift observed in the region due to Himalayan orogeny coupled with mass movement and aeolian deposition have dominated the landscape evolution of intermontane Karewa Basin of Kashmir throughout the Late Quaternary *** data from lithostratigraphic measurements were analyzed to understand the geomorphic evolution of intermontane Karewa *** data revealed that the basin has experienced differential uplift and erosion rates from time to time in the geological *** was corroborated by the results from the morphometric and morphotectonic analysis.

AstroSat Observations of the Be/X-Ray Binary XTE J1946+274 During 2018 and 2021 Outbursts

We present the timing and spectral studies of the Be/X-ray binary XTE J1946+274 during its 2018 and 2021 giant outbursts using observations with the SXT and LAXPC instruments on the AstroSat *** the 1998 and 2010 outbursts,where a giant outburst was followed by several low intensity periodic outbursts,the 2018 and 2021 outbursts were single *** X-ray pulsations are detected over a broad energy band covering 0.5–80 keV from the compact *** construct the spin evolution history of the pulsar over two decades and find that the pulsar spins-up during the outbursts but switches to spin-down state in the quiescent periods between the *** resolved pulse profiles generated in several bands in 0.5–80 keV show that the pulse shape varies with the *** energy spectrum of the pulsar is determined for the 2018 and 2021 *** best fit spectral models require presence of cyclotron resonant scattering feature at about 43 keV in the energy spectra of both the *** find indication of possible reversal in the correlation between the cyclotron line energy and luminosity which needs to be ascertained from future *** the best fit spectra the X-ray luminosity of XTE J1946+274 is inferred to be 2.7×10^(37) erg s^(-1) for the 2018 observations and 2.3×10^(37) erg s^(-1) for the 2021 *** discuss possible mechanisms which can drive outbursts in this transient Be X-ray binary.

Cenozoic flora of western India and its significance in palaeoclimatic and palaeophytogeographic interpretation

The Cenozoic flora of western India(Rajasthan and Gujarat) is adversely affected by the tectonic activity such as collision of the Indian subcontinent with the Eurasian plate which is responsible for the Himalayan and Tibetan Plateau uplift. This collision and its resultants affected the ubiquitous tropical lowland vegetation of the Indian subcontinent(including western India) and are responsible for different types of topographic regions as seen today in the Indian subcontinent. The region is important as it has witnessed a drastic change in climate of the region since the Cenozoic time and also provided opportunities to the western and eastern flora to intermingle. The main basins in western India comprising Cenozoic sequences are: Bikaner-Nagaur, Jaisalmer and Barmer in Rajasthan and Kachchh, Mainland and Saurashtra in Gujarat. These basins are very rich in lignite which is the main source of electric power generation in western India. This lignite is mainly of Eocene in age. The Cenozoic flora of western India was almost tropical growing in well drained areas as compared to arid to sub-humid regions with xeric vegetation today. The reported fossils are represented by leaves, woods, fruits and seeds. The leaves are abundant in the Palaeogene as compared to the Neogene. The Neogene period can be marked by the abundant legumes and dipterocarpaceous remains. The important families viz., Anacardiaceae, Annonaceae, Arecaceae, Calophyllaceae, Clusiaceae, Combretaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Flacourtiaceae, Icacinaceae, Lauraceae, Lythraceae, Meliaceae, Moraceae, Myrtaceae, Pandanaceae and Sonneratiaceae have been reported from the Palaeogene sediments, whereas Anacardiaceae, Araucariaceae, Arecaceae, Combretaceae, Dipterocarpaceae, Fabaceae, Lauraceae, Lecythidaceae, Lythraceae, Malvaceae, Meliaceae, Moraceae, Podocarpaceae, Rhamnaceae, Rhizophoraceae, Rutaceae, Sapindaceae and Sonneratiaceae are known from the Neogene sediments.
