Treatments to repair the human heart following regenerative diseases remain a challenge for medical science. Unlike lower vertebrate species the human heart lacks a regenerative pathway meaning that research has to be focused on cell transplantation. Porcines (Sus scrofa) are excellent models for cardiovascular disease and pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) generated from porcines will provide important clinical insights for cardiac cell therapy. This could open a new avenue of research into degenerative conditions as porcine is a more effective human proxy to work with. However, bona fide PSCs are currently available onlyin rodents (mouse, rat) and primates (monkey, human). Attempts to derivepluripotent stem cells (PSCs) from porcine have been going on for more than two decades with slow progress. Despite the fact that the porcine stem cells are under increasing glare of publicity due to milestone achievements in this area of research. Advances in stem cell technology, especially the genetic engineering, innovative cell culturing and induced pluripotency to generate stem cells has dramatically revolutionized the basic and applied investigations and applications of porcine stem cells. This review attempts to summarize the major signaling pathways involved in maintenance of pluripotency and the state of the art conceptual and technical progress for generating bona fide porcine PSCs.

Methacrylic acid with isoproturon has been utilized to prepare molecularly imprinted polymeric (MIP) membrane on Whatman filter paper no. 5 for selective electrochemical estimation of isoproturon pesticide. MIP membrane was prepared by radical polymerization and characterized using Ultra Violet spectrophotometer, Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Contact angle study was used to determine the surface energy of the MIP membrane and electrical conductivity measurements were performed by applying a small-amplitude alternating voltage (20 mV) with frequencies varying from 20 Hz to 80 kHz generated by a low-frequency wave form generator. Different isoproturon concentrations in samples were tested and analyzed. Results indicate linear increase in membrane resistance with increasing isoproturon in 10-3 to 10-6 M range. The selectivity of the electrochemical sensor was confirmed by testing isoproturon in presence of the structurally related compounds monouran and diuran. Results reveal highly selective and sensitive sensor, which can be employed for regular estimation of isoproturon in fields.

Vajradanti means strong teeth in Hindi. The medicinal properties of Vajradanti plant are well reported in Ayurveda. Its botanical name is Barleria prionitis L. and it belongs to family Acanthaecae. The use of herbal products in the field of medicine has gained popularity in recent years. In India, herbal plants are used as a regular source of medicine. Plants, such as Turmeric, Ashoka and Triphala, are some common household names being widely used nowadays. One such name is Barleria prionitis L. or Vajradanti, having anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory and anti-fertility properties. The leaves of this flower are also believed to provide relief in tooth ache. So these properties lead us to the use of this shrub in the remedy of dental diseases. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in the Department of Periodontology, in collaboration with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dental Sciences, King George’s Medical University, Lucknow, India and N.B.R.I. Lucknow. A total of 80 subjects, from age group 20 - 50 years, were selected. The study unit consisted of patients of chronic gingivitis. Simple random sampling, utilizing computer generated random numbers, was employed to assign the participants to two groups, “I” and “II”, each having 40 participants. In patients of Group-I scaling and root planing was performed, whereas in patients of Group-II, scaling and root planing was performed and subjects were advised to apply Vajradanti gel twice daily after brushing. Statistical Analysis: Data were summarized as mean ± SD. Pre and post outcome results of two groups were compared by the paired t-test. Conclusions: Based on the observations and results of our study, it can be concluded that scaling and root planing remains the gold standard for the treatment of gingival and periodontal diseases while the Vajradanti gel (Barleria prionitis L.) can be effectively used as an adjunct to mechanical plaque control in prevention of chronic gingivitis.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) of maxilla is comparatively rare lesion of the maxillofacial region. There is often a misdiagnosis in the category of fibroosseous lesions, owing to an overlap of clinical, histological and radiographic features amongst the separate entities. We present a case of giant maxillary COF causing extensive disfiguration of the face, along with extensive review of the clinico-pathologic and treatment aspects of the fibro-osseous lesions.

In the present work,zinc oxide(ZnO)and silver(Ag)doped ZnO nanostructures are synthesized using a hydrothermal *** quality of the products is attested using X-ray diffraction,which confirms the hexagonal wurtzite struc-ture of pure ZnO and Ag-doped ZnO *** further confirms the crystallite orientation along the c-axis,(101)*** field emission scanning electron microscope study reveals the change in shape of the synthesized ZnO particles from hexagonal nanoparticles to needle-shaped nanostructures for 3 wt%Ag-doped *** optical band gaps and lattice strain of nanostructures is increased significantly with the increase of doping concentration of Ag in ZnO *** anti-microbial activity of synthesized nanostructures has been evaluated against the gram-positive human pathogenic bacteria,Staphylococcus aureus via an agarose gel diffusion *** maximum value of zone of inhibition(22 mm)is achieved for 3 wt%Ag-doped ZnO nanostructure and it clearly demonstrates the remarkable antibacterial activity.

Facial asymmetry can be acquired or congenital. Patients with facial asymmetry are not always functionally disturbed by the malfunction but are usually very much disturbed by their external appearance. Depending on the degree of asymmetry and deformation, the surgical procedure may vary in complexity and extent. The extent of surgery can range from a genioplasty procedure to bimaxillary osteotomy, concomitant with augmentation surgery, genioplasty and craniofacial implants along with mandibular distraction. In severe cases, the soft tissue structures on the affected side may constitute an incredible resistance to stretching and can make the surgery considerably more difficult and liable to relapse. Here we represent a case of post ankylotic facial asymmetry with occlusal cant which was treated by bimaxillary distraction osteogenesis. Simultaneous mandibular and maxillary distraction corrected the facial asymmetry without disturbing the pre-existing compensated dental occlusion, and so there was no need for prolonged and difficult orthodontic treatment.

Ivabradine—The Final Crusader for Postoperative Junctional Ectopic Tachycardia, a Case Report with Literature Review

Background: Junctional ectopic tachycardia (JET) is one troublesome supraventricular arrhythmia in postoperative pediatric cardiac surgical patients. Unless treated timely and effectively it may lead to morbidity and even mortality. Aim: To understand the role of Ivabradine in the treatment of JET in postoperative pediatric cardiac surgical patients. Case: We present a postoperative case of complete repair of Tetralogy of Fallot who was in normal sinus rhythm in the preoperative period and developed JET 4 hours later in postoperative period which was persistent despite measures to optimize the internal milieu of the body and conventional antiarrhythmics, that was successfully treated with Ivabradine at a dose of 0.05 mg/kg/12 hourly. Conclusion: Ivabradine can be used to successfully treat postoperative JET in cases ofrefractory to other antiarrhythmic drugs like Digoxin and Amiodarone.

The perovskite(La_(0.7)Ba_(0.3))(Mn_(0.5)Fe_(0.5))_(1−x)Zr_(x)O_(3),where x=0.1,0.2 and 0.3,ceramics were synthesized by solid-state reaction *** introductory structural studies were followed through by X-ray diffraction technique and the results have disclosed that all the samples were crystallized into an isolated *** Zr substitution in the resulting solid solutions increases the electrical conductivity and the maximum value of ac conductivity has been found to be~118.8 ***^(−1)for x=0.3 at 200°C(at 1 MHz).The frequency dependence of ac conductivity data follows Jonscher’s power *** variation of the exponent n versus temperature follows the nonoverlapping small polaron tunneling(NSPT)*** dielectric relaxation has been observed to be of non-Debye nature for all measuring temperatures(50-200°C).The impedance spectroscopy reveals that all the samples exhibit negative temperature coefficient of resistance(NTCR)*** prepared samples(for x>1)are supposed to be suitable for cathode materials in SOFCs.

Comparison of the Hemodynamic Effects of the Induction Agents Ketamine, Etomidate and Sevoflurane Using the Model of Electrical Velocimetry Based Cardiac Output Monitoring in Pediatric Cardiac Surgical Patients

Objective: To compare the haemodynamic effects of the induction agents ketamine, etomidate and sevoflurane using the model of electrical velocimetry based cardiac output monitoring in paediatric cardiac surgical patients. Design: Prospective randomized study. Setting: Tertiary care hospital. Participants: 60 children < 2 years age undergoing cardiac surgery. Interventions: The patients were randomized into 3 equal groups to receive 1.5-2.5 mg/kg iv ketamine (group K), 0.2-0.3 mg/kg iv etomidate (group E) or upto 8% sevoflurane (group S) as the induction agent. Hemodynamic parameters were noted before and after induction of anaesthesia utilizing a noninvasive cardiac monitor based on the model of electrical velocimetry. Measurements and Main Results: The demographic characteristics of the patients were similar in the three groups. The HR decreased in all groups, least in group E (P ≤ 0.01) but the MAP decreased only in group S (P ≤ 0.001). In group S, the stroke volume improved from 9 ± 3.2 ml to 10 ± 3.2 ml (P ≤ 0.05) and the stroke volume variation decreased from 25% ± 6.4% to 13% ± 6.2% (P ≤ 0.001). The stroke index and systemic arterial saturation improved in all groups (P ≤ 0.01). The cardiac index and index of contractility were unchanged. The transthoracic fluid content reduced in groups E and S, but did not change in group K (P ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: Etomidate appeared to provide the most stable conditions for induction of anesthesia in children undergoing cardiac surgery, followed by ketamine and sevoflurane.
