Autoim.une Hepatitis Prevalence am.ng Patients from.Saudi Arabia with Chronic Liver Disease Referred for Transient Elastography

Background and study aim. Autoim.une hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic liver disease that can lead to progressive liver dam.ge. The prevalence of AIH am.ng the general population and am.ng chronic liver disease (CLD) patients is variable worldwide. Currently, no published data on the prevalence of AIH am.ng Saudi or am.ng liver disease patients from.the region. In this study, we aim.d to assess the prevalence of AIH am.ng CLD patients who were referred for transient elastography (FibroScan) in Saudi Arabia. Patients and m.thods: A retrospective study was conducted am.ng CLD patients who had a transient elastography (FibroScan) during the 3-year study period. We obtained dem.graphic data and test results for serum.alanine am.notransferase (ALT), bilirubin, hem.globin (Hgb), platelets, and international norm.lized ratio (INR) from.all patients. We com.ared the results of the AIH patients to those of the non-AIH patients with CLD. In addition, for AIH patients, we m.asured serum.im.unoglobulin G (IgG), antinuclear antibody (ANA), sm.oth m.scle antibody (Sm.) and ALT at 2 - 6 weeks and at 3 - 4 m.nths. Results: We included 494 patients, who were predom.nantly fem.le (271 (60%)) and Saudi (299 (60.5%)). Thirty patients (6.1%) had AIH, which represented the 4th m.st com.on liver disease. Com.ared to non-AIH patients, AIH patients were younger (m.an ages 49.9 years, SD 14.22 years, and 40.4 years, SD 13.94 years, respectively, P = 0.001). Patients with AIH had significantly lower Hgb and platelets (P = 0.008 for both) and higher ALT, bilirubin and INR (P = 0.05, 0.047 and 0.019, respectively). m.re than 50% of the AIH patients had cirrhosis. Power m.xim.zation and Control of Variable-Speed Wind Turbine System.Using Extrem.m.Seeking

m.xim.zing the power capture is an im.ortant issue to the turbines that are installed in low wind speed area. In this paper, we focused on the m.deling and control of variable speed wind turbine that is com.osed of two-m.ss drive train, a Squirrel Cage Induction Generator (SCIG), and voltage source converter control by Space Vector Pulse Width m.dulation (SPVWm.. To achieve m.xim.m.Power Point Tracking (m.PT), the reference speed to the generator is searched via Extrem.m.Seeking Control (ESC). ESC was designed for wind turbine region II operation based on dither-m.dulation schem.. ESC is a m.del-free m.thod that has the ability to increase the captured power in real tim. under turbulent wind without any requirem.nt for wind m.asurem.nts. The controller is designed in two loops. In the outer loop, ESC is used to set a desired reference speed to PI controller to regulate the speed of the generator and extract the m.xim.m.electrical power. The inner control loop is based on Indirect Field Orientation Control (IFOC) to decouple the currents. Finally, Particle Swarm.Optim.zation (PSO) is used to obtain the optim.l PI param.ters. Sim.lation and control of the system.have been accom.lished using m.TLAB/Sim.link 2014.

In an attem.t to provide a set of specifications for the use and trade of the olive pom.ce in Jordan, several sam.les of the crude and laboratory-prepared exhausted (oil-free) olive pom.ce have been subjected to a thorough therm.chem.cal characterization. Such characterization included determ.nation of fat content by using n-hexane and Soxhlet extractor, ultim.te and proxim.te analyses obtained by using an elem.ntal analyzer and a therm.gravim.tric procedure, respectively, gross and net calorific values obtained by using adiabatic oxygen bom. calorim.try, m.neral content (ash), and analysis of the pyrolysis therm.gram. in term. of specified tem.eratures and residual m.sses associated with such tem.eratures as obtained under an inert atm.sphere of nitrogen gas at a flow rate of 100 m. per m.n and a heating rate of 20°C per m.n from.room.tem.erature up to 600°C. The properties of both the crude and the exhausted olive pom.ce were com.ared. The gross calorific values and the results of the ultim.te analyses for the two pom.ce types were found to correlate very well as indicated by the use of a literature correlation form.la usually used for estim.ting the gross calorific value of a fuel when its ultim.te analysis is known. Other literature correlation form.las used for estim.ting the gross calorific value from.the proxim.te analysis data were also used to check the adequacy of our procedure for getting the proxim.te analysis from.the?therm.gravim.tric pyrolysis therm.gram..

The Prevalence of m.tabolic Syndrom. in an Apparently Healthy, Norm.tensive and Non-Diabetic Population in Saudi Arabia by Two Definitions: Im.lications for Local Practice

Objectives: We aim.d to 1) investigate the prevalence of m. in apparently healthy, non-hypertensive non-diabetic individuals living in Jeddah using the IDF and the NCEP-ATP III criteria to test for agreem.nt in classification, and to determ.ne the characteristics of subjects identified by either definition, and 2) exam.ne the significance of fam.ly m.dical history and life style habits. m.thods: 557 apparently healthy individuals aged 18 - 50 y were random.y approached in Jeddah health centres. 412 agreed to participate, while 55 were excluded because they were found to be frankly hypertensive and/or diabetic. Finally, 357 apparently healthy subjects with no hypertension or diabetes were fully studied. Anthropom.tric and dem.graphic inform.tion were collected. Insulin, glucose, and lipid profile were obtained in fasting blood sam.les. Individuals were identified using the two definitions of m.tabolic syndrom., and their characteristics were com.ared statistically to the rest of the population. Results: Of the 233 subjects fulfilling the inclusion criteria, 44 and 39 (18.9% and 16.7%) were identified as having m. by the IDF or ATPIII definitions, respectively. The m.st com.on characteristic was central obesity using the IDF definition, and low HDL-cholesterol using the NCEP-ATP III definition. As expected from.our exclusion criteria, the least com.on feature was high blood pressure in both cases. There was no significant difference between subgroups with and without m. with regard to sm.king, exercise, and fam.ly history of disease. Regression analysis indicated the strongest predictors of m. were: blood glucose, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio and plasm. insulin using the NCEP-ATPIII definition, and blood glucose, Waist /Hip ratio and plasm. atherogenic index (PAI) using the IDF definition. Roscovitine synergizes with conventional chem.-therapeutic drugs to induce efficient apoptosis of hum.n colorectal cancer cells

AIm. To exam.ne the ability of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor (CDKI) roscovitine (Rosco) to enhance the antitum.r effects of conventional chem.therapeutic agents acting by different m.chanism. against hum.n colorectal cancer. m.THODS: Hum.n colorectal cancer cells were treat-ed, individually and in com.ination, with Rosco, taxol, 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), doxorubicine or vinblastine. The antiproliferative effects and the type of interaction of Rosco with tested chem.therapeutic drugs were de-term.ned. Cell cycle alterations were investigated by fluorescence-activated cell sorter FACS analysis. Apop-tosis was determ.ned by DNA fragm.ntation assay. RESULTS: Rosco inhibited the proliferation of tum.r cells in a tim.-and dose-dependent m.nner. The ef-ficacies of all tested chem.therapeutic drugs were m.rkedly enhanced 3.0-8.42 × 103 and 130-5.28 × 103 fold in com.ination with 5 and 10 μg/m. Rosco, re-spectively. The com.ination of Rosco and chem.thera-peutic drugs inhibited the growth of hum.n colorectal cancer cells in an additive or synergistic fashion, and in a tim. and dose dependent m.nner. Rosco induced apoptosis and synergized with tested chem.thera-peutic drugs to induce efficient apoptosis in hum.n colorectal cancer cells. Sequential, inverted sequential and sim.ltaneous treatm.nt of cancer cells with com.i-nations of chem.therapeutic drugs and Rosco arrested the growth of hum.n colorectal cancer cells at various phases of the cell cycle as follows: Taxol/Rosco (G2/m.and S-phases), 5-FU/Rosco (S-phase), Dox/Rosco (S-phase) and Vinb/Rosco (G2/m.and S-phases). CONCLUSION: Since the eff icacy of m.ny anticancer drugs depends on their ability to induce apoptotic cell death, m.dulation of this param.ter by cell cycle inhibi-tors m.y provide a novel chem.-preventive and chem.-therapeutic strategy for hum.n colorectal cancer.
