How Sugars Might Coordinate Chloroplast and Nuclear Gene Expression during Acclimation to High Light Intensities

The concept of retrograde control of nuclear gene expression assumes the generation of signals inside the chloroplasts, which are either released from or sensed inside of the organelle. In both cases, downstream signaling path- ways lead eventually to a differential regulation of nuclear gene expression and the production of proteins required in the chloroplast. This concept appears reasonable as the majority of the over 3000 predicted plastidial proteins are encoded by nuclear genes. Hence, the nucleus needs information on the status of the chloroplasts, such as during acclimation responses, which trigger massive changes in the protein composition of the thylakoid membrane and in the stroma. Here, we propose an additional control mechanism of nuclear- and plastome-encoded photosynthesis genes, taking advantage of pathways involved in sugar- or hormonal signaling. Sugars are major end products of photosynthesis and their con- tents respond very sensitively to changes in light intensities. Based on recent findings, we ask the question as to whether the carbohydrate status outside the chloroplast can be directly sensed within the chloroplast stroma. Sugars might syn- chronize the responsiveness of both genomes and thereby help to coordinate the expression of piastome- and nuclear- encoded photosynthesis genes in concert with other, more specific retrograde signals.

We study the vertical distribution of the highly inclined galaxies from the Continuum Halos in Nearby Galaxies—an EVLA Survey(CHANG-ES).We explore the feasibility of photometrically deriving the HⅠdisk scale heights from the moment-0 images of the relatively edge-on galaxies with inclination>80°,by quantifying the systematic broadening effects and thus deriving correction equations for direct *** corrected HⅠdisk scale heights of the relatively edge-on galaxies from the CHANG-ES sample show trends consistent with the quasiequilibrium model of the vertical structure of gas *** procedure provides a convenient way to derive the scale heights and can easily be applied to statistical samples in the future.

Titanium alloys find extensive use in the aerospace and biomedical industries due to a unique combination of strength,density,and corrosion *** of mostly experimental research has led to a large body of knowledge of the processingmicrostructure-properties *** much of the existing understanding of point defects that play a significant role in the mechanical properties of titanium is based on semi-empirical *** this work,we present the results of a detailed self-consistent first-principles study that was developed to determine formation energies of intrinsic point defects including vacancies,selfinterstitials,and extrinsic point defects,such as,interstitial and substitutional impurities/*** find that most elements,regardless of size,prefer substitutional positions,but highly electronegative elements,such as C,N,O,f,S,and Cl,some of which are common impurities in Ti,occupy interstitial positions.

We here present a detailed study of the ligand-receptor interactions between single and triple-helical strands of collagen and the α2A domain of integrin(α2A),providing valuable new insights into the mechanisms and dynamics of collagen-integrin binding at a sub-molecular *** occurrence of single and triple-helical strands of the collagen fragments was scrutinized with atom force microscopy(AfM)*** interactions of the triple-stranded fragments comparable to those of collagen can only be detected for the 42mer triple-helical collagen-like peptide under study(which contains 42 amino acid residues per strand)by solid phase assays as well as by surface plasmon resonance(SPR)***,changes in NMR signals during titration and characteristic saturation transfer difference(STD)NMR signals are also detectable whenα2A is added to a solution of the 21mer single-stranded collagen *** dynamics(MD)simulations employing different sets of force field parameters were applied to study the interaction between triple-helical or single-stranded collagen fragments withα*** is remarkable that even single-stranded collagen fragments can form various complexes withα2A showing significant differences in the complex stability with identical *** results of MD simulations are in agreement with the signal alterations in our NMR experiments,which are indicative of the formation of weak complexes between single-stranded collagen andα2A in *** results provide useful information concerning possible interactions ofα2A with small collagen fragments that are of relevance to the design of novel therapeutic A-domain inhibitors.

Kenya has a rich mammalian fauna. We reviewed recently published books and papers including the six volumes of Mammals of Africa to develop an up-to-date annotated checklist of all mammals recorded from Kenya. A total of 390 species have been identified in the country, including 106 species of rodents,104 species of bats, 63 species of even-toed ungulates(including whales and dolphins), 36 species of insectivores and carnivores, 19 species of primates,five species of elephant shrews, four species of hyraxes and odd-toed ungulates, three species of afrosoricids, pangolins, and hares, and one species of aardvark, elephant, sirenian and hedgehog. The number of species in this checklist is expected to increase with additional surveys and as the taxonomic status of small mammals(e.g., bats, shrews and rodents) becomes better understood.

The complex dielectric constant of pure and cerium doped calcium-barium-niobate (CBN) was studied at frequencies 20 Hz ≤ f ≤ 1 MHz in the temperature range 300 K ≤ T ≤ 650 K and compared with the results for the well known ferroelectric relaxor strontium-barium-niobate (SBN). By the analysis of the systematically taken temperature and frequency dependent measurements of the dielectric constant the phase transition characteristic of the investigated materials was evaluated. from the results it must be assumed that CBN shows a slightly diffuse phase transition without relaxor behavior. Doping with cerium yields a definitely different phase transition characteristic with some indications for a relaxor type ferroelectric material, which are common from SBN.

燃气轮机或电机驱动的压缩机组的现场测试需要精确测定效率、容量、压头或在非理想的工作环境下的功耗。因此,现场测试结果对压缩机和燃气轮机制造商及其客户有重要意义。出于经济考虑,要求验证安装机组的性能和效率以确保项目的投资回报。因此,精准确定现场性能对于压缩机和燃气轮机的制造商以及终端用户非常重要。针对调速压缩机,讨论了一种确定测量不确定度的方法,由此确定在典型约束下的现场测试结果的准确性,即一种可用于验证现场测试性能结果有效性的方法。使用冗余方法把计算结果与现场实际测试结果进行了比较;描述了典型现场测试条件下不同仪表的不确定度;对不同状态方程对计算性能的影响进行了讨论;确认了对性能不确定度有显著影响的相关测试参数,并提供了关于如何使各参数测量误差最小化的建议。结果表明,当违反一些精确测量的基本规则时,压缩机效率的不确定度会超出可接受条件。然而,通过遵循一些简单的测量规则和保持气体状态方程的一致性,压缩机组总体性能测量的不确定度可被限制在一定范围内,并且可以获得有意义的测量结果。
