The Evaluation of Efficacy and Side Effects of Radiotherapy in Cerebral Meningiomas

Aims: The current study aimed to evaluate the efficacy, side effects of radiotherapy and factors influencing treatment outcome in patients received radiotherapy for cerebral meningiomas. Methods and Material: In the last two decades, a total of 35 patients with cerebral meningioma who received radiotherapy in our clinic were evaluated statistically in terms of survival, toxicity and prognostic factors. The records of patients diagnosed with cerebral meningioma who underwent postoperative radiotherapy were retrospectively analyzed. Statistical analysis used: Statistical comparisons were made using IBM SPSS v24.0. Kaplan-Meier method was used to compare survival times. Results: Five of the patients had grade I meningioma showing recurrence, 18 were grade II meningioma and 12 were grade III meningioma. Patients were treated with 54 or 60 Gy adjuvant radiotherapy with 2 Gy daily fractions according to histopathological grade and operation type. Three and five-year overall survival rates were 56% and 40%, respectively and median overall survival was 36 months. Progression was observed in 15 of the 35 patients included in the study. Three and five-year progression-free survival (PFS) rates of the patients were 56% and 50%, respectively. There was a statistically significant correlation between histopathological grade and overall survival among patients. However;no statistical difference found in overall survival of patients in terms of tumor location, operation type and age. Conclusions: In the treatment of cerebral meningiomas, changes in radiotherapy dose and field designs can be predicted according to the tumor grade and operation type. In addition, it is thought that large scale studies are needed to determine prognostic factors more meticulously.

This study reports on an investigation of fine and coarse carbonaceous particulate matters(PM)in Tachileik,eastern Myanmar,during the dry and wet seasons of *** carbon compositions,including organic carbon(OC)and elemental carbon(EC),in each size(PM10-2.5,PM2.5-1.0,and PM1.0-0.5)were determined by a carbon *** average total mass concentration of the three fractions of particle samples during the dry season was higher(51.23±23.86μg/m3)than that of the wet season(14.00±5.26μg/m3).The results indicate that OC and EC levels were highest for PM1.0-0.5 during the dry season and the sizes were similar for both *** OC/EC ratios varied in different seasons,from 1.93 to 4.40 and 4.13 to 5.25 in the dry and wet seasons,*** was sub-divided into char-EC and soot-EC;the char-EC/soot-EC in the dry season was higher than in the wet season,signifying that biomass burning is the main particle source during the dry ***,vehicle emissions dominated during the wet *** effective carbon ratio(ECR)suggested that finer particles contributed more to global *** information is important in terms of air quality control and mitigation in Myanmar and elsewhere.

Monte Carlo Simulation of the Structure of Mono-and Bidisperse Polyethylene Nanocomposites

The structure of bidisperse polyethylene（PE） nanocomposite mixtures of 50：50（by mole） of long and short chains of C160H322/C80H162 and C160H322/C40H82 filled with spherical nanoparticles were investigated by a coarse-grained, on lattice Monte Carlo method using rotational isomeric state theory for short-range and Lennard-Jones for long-range energetic interactions. Simulations were performed to evaluate the effect of wall-to-wall distance between fillers（D）, polymer-filler interaction（w） and polydispersity（number of short chains in the mixture） on the behavior of the long PE chains. The results indicate that long chain conformation statistics remain Gaussian regardless of the effects of confinement, interaction strength and polydispersity. The various long PE subchain structures（bridges, dangling ends, trains, and loops） are influenced strongly by confinement whereas monomer-filler interaction and polydispersity did not have any impact. In addition, the average number of subchain segments per filler in bidisperse PE nanocomposites decreased by about 50% compared to the nanocomposite system with monodisperse PE chains. The presence of short PE chains in the polymer matrix leads to a reduction of the repeat unit density of long PE chains at the interface suggesting that the interface is preferentially populated by short chains.

In vitro Antigenotoxicity of Ulva rigida C. Agardh (Chlorophyceae) Extract against Induction of Chromosome Aberration, Sister Chromatid Exchange and Micronuclei by Mutagenic Agent MMC

Objective To determine the in vitro possible clastogenic and cytotoxic activities of Ulva rigida crude extracts （URE）, and identify their antigenotoxic and protective effects on chemotherapeutic agent mitomycine-C （MMC）. Methods Anti-clastogenic and anti-genotoxic activities of Ulva rigida crude extracts （URE） were studied using chromosome aberration （CA）, sister chromatid exchange （SCE）, and micronuclei （MN） tests in human lymphocytes cultured in vitro. Results The chromosome aberration, sister chromatid exchange or micronuclei tests showed that URE at concentrations of 10, 20, and 40 lag/mL had no clastogenic activity in human lymphocyte cell culture. Three doses of URE significantly decreased the number of chromosomal aberrations and the frequencies of SCE and MN when compared with the culture treated with MMC （P〈0.0001）. Conclusion Although URE itself is not a clastogenic or cytotoxic substance, it possesses strong antigenotoxic, anti-clastogenic, and protective effects on MMC in vitro.

Effect of four different intraocular lenses on posterior capsule opacification

AIM: To evaluate the impact of 4 different intraocular lenses(IOLs) on posterior capsule opacification(PCO) by comparing the neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet(Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy ***: This retrospective study included 4970 eyes of 4013 cataract patients who underwent phacoemulsification and IOL implantation between January 2000 and January 2008 by the same surgeon at one clinic. Four different IOLs were assessed. The outcome parameter was the incidence of Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomies.· RESULTS: An Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy was performed in 153(3.07%) of the 4970 eyes. The mean follow-up time was 84 mo for all of the IOL groups. The percentage of eyes developing PCO was significantly greater for the acrylic hydrophilic IOLs than for the hydrophobic IOLs, although eyes with acrylic hydrophilic IOLs did not require Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy as soon as eyes with acrylic hydrophobic IOLs. There was no difference between the long-term PCO rates when 1-and 3-piece acrylic hydrophobic IOLs were compared or when IOLs made of the same material but with different haptic angles were compared.· CONCLUSION: In this study, eyes with acrylic hydrophilic IOLs were more likely to develop PCO than those with acrylic hydrophobic IOLs. The lens design(1-piece versus 3-piece and varying haptic angles) did not affect the PCO rate.

This study was carried out to investigate the possibility of titanium alloy metal powder production using low-power plasma *** argon DC non-transferred arc plasma torch was designed,and numerical analysis was conducted to determine the plasma jet properties and wire *** highest velocities inside the nozzle attachment were between 838 and 1178 m/*** velocities of the jets at the apex were between 494 and 645 m/s for different gas flow *** studied plasma gas flow rates had no significant effect on the effective plasma jet *** was shown that the plasma jet length can be estimated by numerical analysis using the temperature and velocity changes of the plasma jet over *** was observed that the powders produced were spherical without any *** a result of this study,a plasma torch was developed and powder production was performed successfully by using relatively low torch power.

Numerous endeavours have been developed bio-based polymer packaging films to replace the use of petroleum-based *** this study,as a response and support to the enduring research issues,we have developed the optimization composite film formulation based on chitosan(2%),Dioscorea alata starch(0.5%),and glycerol(1.5%)had satisfactory result on several parameters consisting thickness(0.45 mm),solubility(472.1%),moisture content(29.872%),biodegradability(38.346%),elastic modulus(971.2 N/m2)and tensile strength(98.71 N/m).Further,the optimized chitosan film(CF)formulation was enriched with several essential oils(EO),i.e.,lemongrass,garlic and aloe vera *** the addition of EO,the solubility,biodegradable tests,and elongation to break of CF tended to decrease whereas the contact angle and mechanical properties significantly ***,the antibacterial properties of CF against Escherichia coli,Salmonella typhi,Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis dramatically increased by the addition of *** impressive results are expected to be applied in the food packaging industry to maintain the quality of food products.

Antioxidant and cytotoxic activity of Acanthus ilicifolius flower

Objective:To investigate the antioxidant and cytotoxic activity of the flower of Acanthus ilicifolius(***).Methods:Antioxidant activity was determined as antiradical efficiency with diphenyl picrylhydrazil(DPPH)method and cytotoxic assay was undertaken using brine shrimp lethal toxicity ***:*** flower contained terpenoid,phenolic compounds,and *** methanol extract of *** flower showed the highest antiradical efficiency(AE=1.41×10^(-3))against DPPH radicals and the highest cytotoxicity(LC_(50)=22μg/mL)against brine shrimp ***:It is suggested that active compounds of *** flower solved in methanol play a role to inhibit free radical activity and kill Artemia salina *** substances can be considered as potential antioxidant and cytotoxic agents as well as imminent candidate for cancer therapy.

Experimental and first-principles investigation of crystal structure of powder metallurgy Al-1.1Sc and Al-2Sc alloys

Al-1.1%Sc and A1-2%Sc （mass fraction） alloys were prepared using gas atomized alloy particles. Samples from consolidated alloys were analyzed by XRD for the determination of lattice parameters. Using these lattice parameters, the mechanical properties of the alloys were calculated theoretically with WIEN2k and EMTO programs, respectively. The elasticity moduli of the experimentally produced alloys were compared with the theoretical calculation results. The calculated mechanical properties of A13Sc phase and A1-Sc alloys were discussed to determine the optimum Sc content of Al-Sc alloys. It may be concluded that the Sc content should be the maximum about 1.0%, much more Sc addition could not improve the mechanical properties of the alloys.
