Multi-hazard susceptibility prediction is an important component of disasters risk management *** effective multi-hazard risk mitigation strategy includes assessing individual hazards as well as their ***,with the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology,multi-hazard susceptibility prediction techniques based on machine learning has encountered a huge *** order to effectively solve this problem,this study proposes a multi-hazard susceptibility mapping framework using the classical deep learning algorithm of Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN).First,we use historical flash flood,debris flow and landslide locations based on Google Earth images,extensive field surveys,topography,hydrology,and environmental data sets to train and validate the proposed CNN ***,the proposed CNN method is assessed in comparison to conventional logistic regression and k-nearest neighbor methods using several objective criteria,i.e.,coefficient of determination,overall accuracy,mean absolute error and the root mean square *** results show that the CNN method outperforms the conventional machine learning algorithms in predicting probability of flash floods,debris flows and ***,the susceptibility maps of the three hazards based on CNN are combined to create a multi-hazard susceptibility *** can be observed from the map that 62.43%of the study area are prone to hazards,while 37.57%of the study area are *** hazard-prone areas,16.14%,4.94%and 30.66%of the study area are susceptible to flash floods,debris flows and landslides,*** terms of concurrent hazards,0.28%,7.11%and 3.13%of the study area are susceptible to the joint occurrence of flash floods and debris flow,debris flow and landslides,and flash floods and landslides,respectively,whereas,0.18%of the study area is subject to all the three *** results of this study can benefit engineers,disaster managers and local government offici

Unlike strong earthquake-triggered or heavy rainfall-triggered landslides,silent large-scale landslides(SLL) occur without significant triggering factors and cause unexpected significant disaster risks and mass *** the initiation mechanism of SLLs is crucial for risk *** this study,the mechanism of the Zhaobishan SLL was investigated,and the SLL was jointly controlled by weak-soil(fractured rock mass) and strong-water(abundant water replenishment)conditions under the impact of active tectonism and complex hydraulic *** tectonic uplift,high fault density,and historical earthquakes led to weak-soil conditions conducive to the Zhaobishan *** combined effect of unique lithology,antiform,and cultivated land contributed to the water replenishment characteristics of extensive runoff confluence(3.16 times that of the landslide body) and supported long-distance groundwater replenishment,thereby forming strongwater conditions for the *** amplified seepage amount caused the strength of the soil mass on the sliding surface to decrease to 0.4 times its initial strength,eventually triggering the Zhaobishan SLL,which occurred 4.6 days after the peak ***,the landslide deposits have accumulated on the semi-diagenetic clay rock,thereby controlling the subsequent recurring debris flows in the Lengzi *** reduce disaster risk of SLL in vulnerable mountainous regions,the water confluence area behind the main scarp of the landslides and the hysteresis characteristics between landslides and peak rainfall should be further considered,and recurring debris flows following massive landslides also should be focused.

Objective:To examine the determinants of emergency contraceptive pill use in ***:Data for this cross-sectional study came from 2017-2018 Bangladesh Demographic and Health *** of 906 reproductive age women who were potential candidates for using emergency contraceptive pill were analysed in this *** were analysed using univariate and multivariate *** binary logistic regression was employed as multivariate ***:Only 10.9%candidates were found to ever use emergency contraceptive *** odds of using emergency contraceptive pill for women visited by family planning field worker was significantly higher than that for those who were not visited by family planning field worker[odds ratio(OR)1.94;95%confidence interval(CI)1.19–3.17;P=0.008],while the odds of using emergency contraceptive pill for women with high socioeconomic status was higher than that for those with low socioeconomic status(OR 3.10;95%CI 1.61–5.97;P=0.001).Additionally,having some media access was linked to an increase in the odds of using emergency contraceptive pill(OR 3.01;95%CI 1.33–6.83;P=0.008).Women empowerment related factors did not show any significant effect on emergency contraceptive pill ***:The findings indicate that family planning programme has a great opportunity of playing an important role in increasing emergency contraceptive pill use in Bangladesh by increasing the knowledge and awareness of women about emergency contraceptive pill.

The catastrophic rockslide,which frequently triggers numerous severe disasters worldwide,has drawn much attention globally;however,understanding the initiation mechanism of catastrophic rockslides in the absence of typical single triggering factors related to strong seismic activity or torrential precipitation continues to be challenging within the global scientific *** study aims to determine the mechanism of the three largest catastrophic rockslides in the eastern Tibetan Plateau,Yigong,Xinmo,and Baige,over the past 20 years using field investigation,remote sensing,and runoff *** of the conventional driving factors of heavy rainfall and strong earthquakes,the multi-wing butterfly effects(MWBE)of climatic factors and weak earthquakes are for the first time identified as drivers of the catastrophic rockslide ***,strong tectonic uplift,fast fluvial incision,high-density faults,and large regional water confluence formed the slopes in the critical regime,creating the source conditions of ***,the MWBE of early dry-heat events and antecedent rainfall,combined with imminent weak earthquakes,initiated ***,the delayed amplified runoff moving toward the sliding surface and lowering the strength of the locking-rock segment constituted the fundamental mechanism of the MWBE on *** catastrophic rockslide was ultimately inferred to be a nonlinear chaotic process;however,prediction and forecasting of rockslide based on the MWBE in the early stages are possible and *** finding presents a new perspective concerning forecasting progressive landslides.

This study attempts to investigate the climatic variability in the southwestern area of Bangladesh focusing on temperature and precipitation extremes. Long-term daily records of temperature and precipitation from six weather stations spread over the study area were analyzed. A total of 20 yearly indices were calculated and testified for the trends with the Mann–Kendal test and Sen’s estimator of slope at a 95% confidence interval. Moreover, one-way ANOVA and Tukey–Kramer post-hoc tests were applied to verify the spatial heterogeneity of the climatic indices among the meteorological stations. Findings revealed that Khulna is the worst affected area with significant changes in 12 climatic indices. Jessore and Faridpur followed Khulna with significant changes in10 and 9 indices, respectively. Among the indices, significant changes in TN10p(frequencies of daily minimum temperature event that falls below the 10th percentile value), TX10p(frequencies of daily maximum temperature event that falls beyond the 10th percentile value), CSDI(cold spell duration indicator), and CDD(consecutive dry day) are the most common phenomenon in the studied region. Five out of six stations have been experiencing significant increasing trends for TN10p. That indicates an overall increase of extreme cold day frequencies in the area. Khulna station showed shreds of evidence of extreme cold temperature instances with a statistically significant fall in the minimum value of the yearly minimum temperatures(TNn). Besides,Khulna also experienced a statistically significant fall in the minimum value of the yearly maximum temperatures. Consistently, the area showed a significant trend of wider cold ***, the extremely warm day frequencies have also been increasing significantly for the Khulna, Jessore, and Faridpur areas. A study was conducted to investigate the cultural and financial management techniques of betel leaf based agroforestry system practiced in or near homegardens of Khasia community in Jaintapur Upazila in the district of Sylhet, *** Khasia is an educated community where 100% of Khasia people were literate, a stunning fact for this ethnic community in *** average family size in the study area was 7.68, with a ration of male and females of 141:*** homegardens of the Khasia are rich in species composi-tion, which 15 timber species, 22 horticultural species, six medicinal species, 13 annual crops including leafy vegetables, seven species of spices and five species of bamboo were identified along with betel *** Khasia is an economically prosperous community with the minimum family incomes of Tk 4 000 per month(Tk.70=1 US Dollar).Betel leaf based agroforestry is very common being a prevalent source of *** 95.45% of the households are involved in betel leaf *** mean annual income from one hectare of betel leaf plantation was estimated to be *** practice was proven to be a profitable business where the benefit cost ratio was calculated to be ***, the species composition in the betel leaf plantation area(the forest area once utilized by Khasia for shifting cultivation) was found to be very promising to play the significant role in conservation of biological diversity making the practice a sus-tainable agroforestry system.

The effects of teak monoculture on forest soils: a case study in Bangladesh

Teak plantations date back to 1871 in Bangladesh. This study was designed to assess how teak monoculture has impacted the soil properties in Bangladesh. Multiple linear regression and correlation matrices were estimated to evaluate these impacts. The means of soil physicochemical properties were compared across various attributes of the plantations. Older plantations accumulated more organic carbon in the soils than the younger plantations. Excessive removal of litter from the forest floor resulted in reduced levels of N, P, K, and other nutrients in the soils. Since bulk density was continuously decreasing deeper into the soil, the penetration of mineral nutrients into the soil was low. Furthermore, moisture content in the topsoil was significantly lower than that in the bottom layers due to the exposed and dry condition of the forest floor under teak plantations. For improving depleted teak plantation soils, teak could be planted with other tree species rather than just in monocultures. In addition, the forest floor could be enriched with leguminous herbs and shrubs to improve soil health in these plantations.

Sediment samples were collected from ten selected sites of the lower Meghna River estuary, and six heavy metals were analyzed with Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry(AAS) to assess the contamination level and the metals’ association with sediment grain size. The current results revealed that the mean concentrations of the studied metals were ranked in descending order of iron(Fe)(1.29 ? 103 mg/kg) > zinc(Zn)(42.41 mg/kg) > lead(Pb)(12.48 mg/kg) > chromium(Cr)(10.59 mg/kg) > copper(Cu)(6.22 mg/kg) > cadmium(Cd)(0.28 mg/kg). The geo-accumulation, contamination, and pollution load indexes suggested that the lower Meghna river estuary was not contaminated by Fe, Zn, Pb, Cr, and *** mean size of the sediment ranged from 28.92 to 126.2 mm, and the Pearson correlation coefficient showed a significant association between Fe and Pb(coefficient of determination, r2? 0.836; p < 0.05),and no significant correlation was found between individual metals and grain size, indicating no or low influence on the metals distribution.
