What is the quantitative risk of gastric cancer in the first-degree relatives of patients? A meta-analysis

AIMTo quantify the risk of gastric cancer in first-degree relatives of patients with the *** comprehensive literature search was performed. Case-control trials comparing the frequency of a positive family history of gastric cancer in patients with gastric cancer, vs non-gastric cancer controls were retrieved. Studies with missed or non-extractable data, studies in children, abstracts, and duplicate publications were excluded. A meta-analysis of pooled odd ratios was performed using Review Manager 5.0.25. We performed subgroup analysis on Asian studies and a sensitivity analysis based on the quality of the studies, type of the outcome, sample size, and whether studies considered only first-degree ***-two relevant studies out of 612 potential abstracts (n = 80690 individuals) were included. 19.0% of the patients and 10.9% of the controls had at least one relative with gastric cancer (P he pooled relative risk for the development of gastric cancer in association with a positive family history was 2.35 (95%CI: 1.96-2.81). The Cochran Q test for heterogeneity was positive (P he three outlier studies with the highest relative risks, heterogeneity remained significant (P he result was not different among Asian studies as compared to others and remained robust in several sensitivity analyses. In the 26 studies which exclusively analysed the history of gastric cancer in first-degree relatives, the relative risk was 2.71 (95%CI: 2.08-3.53; P h a first-degree relative affected with gastric cancer have a risk of about 2.5-fold for the development of gastric cancer. This could be due to genetic or environmental factors. Screening and preventive strategies should be developed for this high-risk population.

A convenient and efficient method for the synthesis of pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4-ones via heterocyclization reaction of 5-amino-lh-pyrazole-4-carboxamides with triethyl orthoesters using two BrCnsted-acidic ionic liquids, 3-methyl-l-（4-sulfonic acid）butylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate [MIM＋（Ch2）4SO3h][ hSO4 ] or N-（4-sulfonic acid）butyl triethylammonium hydrogen sulfate [Et3N＋（Ch2）4SO3h][ hSO4 ], as efficient homogeneous catalysts under solvent-free conditions is described.

A highly efficient and general method for the synthesis of polyfunctionalized 4h-pyrans is established through a one-pot multicomponent cyclocondensation of aromatic aldehydes with Ch acids, malononitrile and ethyl acetoacetate using nano silica supported tin （II） chloride as a catalyst. In this method SnCl2/nano Si02 was used as green and reusable catalyst. Excellent yields, short reaction times, simple workup, and inexpensiveness and commercially availability of the catalyst are the advantages of this method.

Dear Editor, It is well established that combinatorial posttranslational histone modifications regulate many aspects of chromatin dynamics. The evolutionary conserved kinase haspin spe-cifically phosphorylates histone h3 at threonine 3 （T3） in human （Dai et al., 2005） and plants （Ashtiyani et al., 2011; Kurihara et al., 2011）. Phosphorylation of h3T3 by haspin acts in targeting the chromosome passenger complex to the cen-tromeres in human, fission yeast, and Xenopus, and results in the activation of its kinase Aurora B at centromeres （Kelly et al., 2010; Wang et al., 2010; Yamagishi et al., 2010）.

CuI nanoparticles as an efficient catalyst have been used for the preparation of 1h-pyrazolo[l,2- b]phthalazine-5,10-diones by the four-component condensation reaction of phthalic anhydride, hydrazine monohydrate, aromatic aldehydes and malononitrile or ethyl cyanoacetate under solvent- free conditions in good to excellent yields, short reaction times and environmentally benign, milder reaction conditions.

Sulfonic acid-functionalized silica-coated nano-Fe3O4 particles(Fe3O4@SiO2-SO3h) have been prepared as a novel heterogeneous acid using a facile *** material was subsequently identified as an efficient catalyst for the synthesis of a variety of tetraketone derivatives via the Knoevenagel condensation and Michael addition reactions of aromatic aldehydes to dimedone,1,3-indanedione,and 1,3-dimethyl barbituric *** catalyst could be readily recovered using a simple external magnet and reused several times without any significant loss in *** current catalytic process is both sustainable and economical because it operates under aqueous conditions,the catalyst can be recovered and reused,and the reactions themselves require only a short time and provide the products in high yield.

Self-referent phenotype matching and its role in female mate choice in arthropods

A growing body of empirical evidence shows that females of many animal species gain benefits by mating polyan- drously, and often prefer to mate with novel males over previous mates. Although a female preference for novel males has been ,demonstrated for multiple animal taxa, the mechanisms used by females to discriminate between novel and previous mates remain largely unknown. however, recent studies suggest that in decorated crickets Gryllodes sigillatus, females actually imbue males with their own chemical cues, known as cuticular hydrocarbons （ChCs） during mating, and utilize chemosensory self-referencing 1：o recognize recent mates. here we review evidence that self-referent phenotype matching is a widespread mechanism of recogni- tion in arthropods, and explore how ChCs are used to facilitate mate-choice decisions. There is substantial evidence that ChCs are used as recognition cues to discriminate between species, kin, sexes, mates, individuals, and self and non-self, and are used to facilitate mate-choice decisions in a wide range of arthropod taxa. There is also evidence that ChCs are often transferred between individuals during direct physical contact, including copulation. Chemosensory self-referencing via cuticular hydrocarbons could provide a simple, but reliable mechanism for identifying individuals from previous mating encounters. This mechanism does not require any specialized cognitive abilities because an individual＇s phenotype is always available for reference. Given the ubiqui- tous use of ChCs among arthropods, chemosensory self-referencing may be a widespread mechanism used by female arthropods to facilitate ibmale mate-choice decisions and to enhance opportunities for polyandry [Current Zoology 59 （2）： 239-248, 2013].

Net ecosystem carbon exchange for Bermuda grass growing in mesocosms as affected by irrigation frequency

Intensification of grazed grasslands following conversion from dryland to irrigated farming has the potential to alter ecosystem carbon(C)cycling and affect components of carbon dioxide(CO_(2))exchange that could lead to either net accumulation or loss of soil *** there are many studies on the effect of water availability on biomass production and soil C stocks,much less is known about the effect of the frequency of water inputs on the components of CO_(2)*** grew Bermuda grass(Cynodon dactylon L.)in mesocosms under irrigation frequencies of every day(I_(1) treatment,30 d),every two days(I_(2) treatment,12 d),every three days(I_(3) treatment,30 d),and every six days(I_(6) treatment,18 d,after I_(2) treatment).Rates of CO_(2)exchange for estimating net ecosystem CO_(2)exchange(F_(N)),ecosystem respiration(R_(E)),and soil respiration(R_(S))were measured,and gross C uptake by plants(F_(G))and respiration from leaves(R_(L))were calculated during two periods,1–12 and 13–30 d,of the 30-d *** the first 12 d,there were no significant differences in cumulative F_(N)(mean±standard deviation,61±30 g C m^(-2),n=4).During the subsequent 18 d,cumulative F_(N) decreased with decreasing irrigation frequency and increasing cumulative soil water deficit(W),with values of 70±22,60±16,and 18±12 g C m^(-2) for the I_(1),I_(3),and I_(6) treatments,*** were similar decreases in F_(G),R_(E),and R_(L) with increasing W,but differences in R_(S) were not *** of the C_(4) grass growing in a C_(3)-derived soil enabled partitioning of R_(S) into its autotrophic(R_(A))and heterotrophic(R_(h))components using a^(13)C natural abundance isotopic technique at the end of the experiment when differences in cumulative W between the treatments were the *** values of R_(h) and its percentage contributions to R_(S)(43%±8%,42%±8%,and 8%±5%for the I_(1),I_(3),and I_(6) treatments,respectively)suggested that R_(h) remained unaffected across a wide

Drought is a recurring phenomenon that puts crop yields at risk and threatens the livelihoods of many people around the ***-green is a drought adaption phenotype found in sorghum and other *** expressing this phenotype show less drought-induced senescence and maintain functional green leaves for longer when water limitation occurs during grain fill,conferring benefits in both yield per se and *** physiological causes of the phenotype are postulated to be water saving through mechanisms such as reduced canopy size or access to extra water through mechanisms such as deeper *** sorghum breeding programs,stay-green has traditionally been assessed by comparing visual scores of leaf senescence either by identifying final leaf senescence or by estimating rate of leaf *** this study,we compared measurements of canopy dynamics obtained from remote sensing on two sorghum breeding trials to stay-green values(breeding values)obtained from visual leaf senescence ratings in multienvironment breeding trials to determine which components of canopy development were most closely linked to the stay-green ***,canopy size as estimated using preflowering canopy parameters was weakly correlated with stay-green values for leaf senescence while postflowering canopy parameters showed a much stronger association with leaf *** study suggests that factors other than canopy size have an important role in the expression of a stay-green phenotype in grain sorghum and further that the use of UAVs with multispectral sensors provides an excellent way of measuring canopy traits of hundreds of plots grown in large field trials.
