With time concrete / reinforced concrete has become the popular material for construction. Modern industry utilizes this material a lot and has produced various beautiful, eye catching and amazing structures. Due to modern requirements for living and developed construction industries, the old buildings (usually constructed with brick masonry) are demolished and are replaced with new modern buildings. Demolition of buildings results in waste materials which can create waste related problems and environmental issues. By using recycled aggregates weight of concrete can also be reduced, which can also solve problems related to self-weight of concrete. In this paper attempt has been made to use local used bricks from vicinity of Nawabshah, Pakistan, as coarse aggregate. Concrete cubes made with local recycled bricks are cast and tested for overall weight of concrete, moisture content, dynamic modulus of elasticity and compressive strength (nondestructive and destructive methods). The results showed that concrete derived from recycled aggregates attained lower strength than regular concrete. More detailed elaborated work is recommended with different mix ratios and different proportions recycled aggregates for better conclusions.

石油化工厂和炼油厂因硫化氢腐蚀导致的装置泄露不断遭受经济损失和重大人员伤亡。加氢裂化是石油化工行业非常重要的工艺过程,通过加氢裂化可以获得石脑油、柴油液化气等产品。加氢裂化工艺使用的原料油中含有硫化物和氯化物,对腐蚀性环境的形成有一定的影响。因此了解不同腐蚀介质对炼油厂金属材料的作用机理具有重要意义。而在加氢裂化过程中,硫化氢是最具腐蚀性的介质之一。本论文的研究目的是通过可视化方法和颜色指示技术研究加氢装置分馏塔中空气冷却器管道的失效机理,观察多相流动情况。CFD仿真结果表明,空气冷却器管道的泄露是由于冲刷腐蚀造成的。流体对管束的冲刷作用在冲刷腐蚀的整个过程中起着主导作用,而电化学腐蚀的影响相对较小。偏流是造成空气冷却器管损坏的重要原因。经过实验设计,过程仿真,设备设计和选型,设计了研究空气冷却器的冲刷腐蚀的管流式实验装置。基于此装置,设计并完成了空气冷却器管束的可视化实验。实验结果表明,由于偏转角的不同,管道各段入口处的流体分布是不同的,但是在管道的第四段中,流体的流动行为和分布没有显着差异。通过透明玻璃管,可以观察到实验介质的流动行为以及气液两相流中液滴的分布和流动。比较了视觉实验和CFD仿真的结果,并且与仿真结果和实验结果吻合良好。根据实验现象,总结了流体在实际工况下的流动行为。本论文使用了一套指示剂系统对空冷器管束中多相流的流动和分布进行研究。在将其用于正式的实验之前,设计了一个小实验对指示剂系统进行测试。结果表明,液滴越密集,颜色变化越明显,没有气泡的地方几乎没有颜色变化。当指示剂与实验介质发生反应时,它会由于酸性或碱性而改变颜色。当气液两相在管道中流动时,由于入口附近的颜色变化,使得气液两相流的分布和流动情况更加明显。可视化系统的研究显示了实时的多相流的行为和分布,为推动化学工程,多相流传输,化学安全和其他学科的发展提供了参考。

Efficacy of Watercourse Lining in Sindh —A Review Study in Relation with Kohistan Region

The total number of watercourses in Pakistan is about 110,000 and particularly in Sindh it is about 46,699, out of which 7576 have been lined from 1977 to 1998 and from 2004 to 2015;22,479 have been lined and the remaining 16,644 still require improvement. At the current rate of progress, the lining of remaining watercourses would further take about 21 years. As designed life of the improved watercourse is about 25 years. By the time of ending of many watercourse improvement programs, there will again require the rehabilitation on many of the earlier watercourse lining schemes. Generally two types of watercourse lining are practiced in Sindh i.e. Rectangular Lined Watercourses (with single and double brick walls) and Trapezoidal Concrete Lined Watercourses. Because of efficient, effectiveness, easy maintenance and repair work, the Rectangular Lined Watercourse is more frequently practiced in Sindh. It is now suggested that: to renovate the watercourses an accelerated program should be started and the system (with the sense of terms and conditions) for renovation of watercourses program should also be changed. The research work towards different types of lining materials for watercourse should be conducted. Looking to the brief review it is suggested that a fiber glass type plastic material with semi-circular or U-shaped, pre-cast fabricated RCC Trapezoidal or Parabolic in place of brick mortar and concrete could be used for watercourse lining. This methodology, proposed to be used, will enable us to determine cost-benefit ratio, life span and such other parameters for its feasibility under variable climatic conditions of Sindh (North Sindh being dry and hot, while South Sindh semi-humid and warm).

Effect of Mineral and Vitamin Supplementation on Performance and Haemotological Values in Broilers

A total of 120-day-old broilers were divided into four groups. In group-A, broilers were left without supplementation of minerals and vitamins(control), while the broilers in groups B, C and D were given mineral and vitamin supplementation 1-6, 1-4 and 5-6 weeks, respectively. The results showed that the feed consumption of broilers in groups A, B, C and D was 4 234.61, 4 028.38, 4 169.32 and 4 181.87 g · b-1; water intake was 9 668.88, 9 295.55, 9 882.11 and 9 402.86 L · b-1; live body weight was 2 068.90, 2 360.90, 2 255.30 and 2 157.40 g · b-1, respectively. The feed conversion ratio of broilers in groups A, B, C, D was 2.05, 1.71, 1.85 and 1.94 g · b-1, carcass weight(wt) was 1 550, 1 656, 1 552 and 1 528.8 g · b-1, and average dressing percentage was 61.24, 63.02, 62.60 and 60.51 respectively. Weight of heart in groups A, B, C and D was 15.13, 13.16, 11.72 and 11.50 g · b-1, weight of gizzard was 32.98, 37.48, 37.62 and 33.35 g · b-1, weight of liver was 51.94, 48.70, 51.94 and 48.70 g · b-1 and spleen weight was 3.48, 3.28, 3.06 and 2.82 g · b-1, respectively. Average mortality of broilers in groups A, B, C and D was 6, 2, 4 and 5 resulting 20.00%, 8.00%, 13.00% and 16.00% mortality rate, respectively. The haemoglobin level in blood of broilers in groups A, B, C and D was 9.20, 12.23, 10.87 and 7.60 g · dL-1,white blood cell level 77.47, 89.83, 81.63 and 78.13(×106 μL); red blood cell level 1.85, 2.58, 2.45 and 1.40(×106 μL), respectively. It was concluded that broilers given mineral and vitamin supplementation(Aquavit Electrolyte) for 6 weeks were proven to be most effective regime to result the lowest feed intake, the highest live body weight, better feed conversion ratio, higher carcass weight, better dressing percentage, higher net profit, relatively improved haemoglobin level in blood, increased counts of red blood cells and white blood cells. Introduction: Malakoplakia is a rare acquired granulomatous inflammatory condition. Microscopically it is characterized by sheets of histiocytes with abundant eosinophilic granular cytoplasm (known as von Hansemann cells) with intracytoplasmic rounded concentric basophilic inclusions (Michelis-Guttmann bodies). We reviewed all cases of malakoplakia diagnosed at our institution in the past 15 years, including clinical, macroscopic, and microscopic features as well as treatment and prognosis. Methods: Gross and microscopic features of cases diagnosed as malakoplakia from 2005 to 2019 at our institution were reviewed. Clinical history, including sites of involvement, clinical presentation, imaging, past medical history, treatment, follow-up and prognosis, as well as demographic characteristics were obtained. Results: Eighteen surgical pathology cases of malakoplakia were identified. Most cases occurred in female (14/18, 77.8%) and all in adults (median age 48.5 years;range 31 - 87). Half of the patients were Caucasian, 44% African American and 6% were reported as “other” race. One third (6/18) of patients presented with a mass-like lesion on imaging or endoscopic studies. As to site of lesion, 61.1% (11/18) involved GU tract, 27.8% (5/18) gastrointestinal (GI) tract, 5.6% (1/18) liver, and 5.6% (1/18) vagina. 38.9% of patients (7/18) had antibiotics treatment upon diagnosis. Conclusion: Malakoplakia is a rare disorder occurring in a wide age range, more commonly in females, with no significant racial prevalence. While the GU and GI tracts are the most common sites, other anatomic locations can be involved. Accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important to avoid recurrence.

Two novel variants in CYP1B1 gene: a major contributor of autosomal recessive primary congenital glaucoma with allelic heterogeneity in Pakistani patients

AIM: To find the CYP1 B1 mutations associated with primary congenital glaucoma(PCG) in Pakistani consanguineous pedigrees. METHODS: After getting informed consent, 11 consanguineous pedigrees belonging to different ethnic groups were enrolled. Detailed medical history was recorded and pedigrees were drawn. The standard ophthalmological examination was done to characterize the phenotype. Genomic DNA was extracted from 10 mL whole blood and coding exons and exon intron boundaries of CYP1 B1 gene were directly sequenced. Bioinformatics tools were used to model the mutant protein and predict the effect of novel variants on protein structure and function. RESULTS: Sequencing analysis revealed 5 different CYP1 B1 variants in 7 families(7/11; 64%), including two novel variants. A common mutation, p.R390 H was found in four families, whereas p.P437 L was found once in a family. Two novel variants, a homozygous non sense variant p.L13* and a compound heterozygous variant, p.P350 T along with p.V364 M were segregating with PCGin two families. All the patients had the variable onset and severity of the disease. The success rate of early clinical interventions was observed dependent on mutation types and position. Two different haplotypes were associated with frequently found mutation, p.R390 H. CONCLUSION: Identification of novel CYP1 B1 variants reassert the genetic heterogeneity of Pakistani PCG patients. The patients with missense mutations show severe phenotypic presentations and poor vision after surgical interventions as compare to patients with null variants. This may help to better understand the role of CYP1 B1 mutations in the development of PCG and its course of pathogenicity.
